Wolf's Chance

Rate this book
Willow Harper has spent most of her life alone, after all, it’s easier to be alone when you’ve already lost everything. Content in the quiet town of Whispering Pines, she immerses herself in her art.

Then Caleb Foster shows up. Tall, handsome, and annoyingly intrusive. Willow wants nothing to do with him.

Caught between curiosity and caution, Willow finds herself watching Caleb and wondering where he goes at night. He sticks out like a sore thumb during the day, but after sundown, he vanishes without a trace.

When fate throws them together, bringing supernatural threats and urban legends to life, Willow has no choice but to trust the mysterious stranger who dogs her days and hounds her dreams.

As their connection becomes increasingly difficult to ignore, they find themselves relying on each other to brave the approaching storm.

Willow didn’t ask for his help…Caleb seems reluctant to offer it.

And both are completely unprepared for what lies ahead.

Wolf's Chance is the story of a lone shifter, a determined woman, and a mystery that will pull him back to the world he left behind.

Wolf’s Chance is the first book in The Shadowridge Peak Series, which is a paranormal romance.

Caleb and Willow’s story is a perfect slow burn with the storytelling focusing on the world building and overall plot.

When Caleb arrives at Whispering Pines, everything changes for the two of them and their journey and lives are now intertwined. Whilst there’s no romance as yet, there’s definitely chemistry between these two and the story is building on trust and actually getting to know each other in a situation they’ve been thrown into.

Love that the main characters each have a draw to the other, but the underlying unknown is what draws me in as the reader. The mystery, the secrets, the internal monologue and whispers, are all captivating. And of course a massive cliffhanger!

I can’t wait for the next book in The Shadowridge Peak Series to read more of Caleb and Willow’s adventures and how their relationship progresses.

I would highly recommend also reading The Blackridge Peak Series. The stories aren’t connected, but there’s some character crossover/reference and it’s nice to have that backstory as a bonus.

As the first novel in Eve L Mitchell's newest trilogy, Wolf's Chance introduces us to Willow and Caleb. A human woman and a lone shifter.

As they develop a grudging bond, they each ruffle a number of different feathers making their banter snarky but often witty.

They have no clue what has drawn them together but Caleb's protective instincts have raised to the surface especially when it becomes obvious, to him at least, that Willow is in danger.

This amazing first novel will capture your attention and grip you with the mystery surrounding Willow especially, but with Caleb also being a puzzle to be solved.

Let's be absolutely clear though...this is the first novel in a trilogy centred around two main characters and no answers will be immediately forthcoming!
Fortunately though there is no 'hanging on to the edge of a cliff' ending akin to a series ender for a, now aged, 80's American blockbuster. There is however a real ellipsis end...

I can't wait for December 20th and the next book in the Shadowridge Peak series.

Willow is getting by in life with an illness that takes almost everything out of her every day. She gets by with her one close friend Lily, her art students, and her studio. She isn't expecting to start seeing a strange man around town continuously, nor for him to start meddling in her life and turn everything she once knew on it's head.

*****

This one took a little bit to get going, but once it did I was gripped! I loved that we get chronic illness rep with the FMC, and that we get to see what her life is like on a daily basis as well as during flare-ups and events. Her and Caleb were interesting together, although I wish we had a bit more relationship development, although I assume that's coming more in later novels.

I did love that this was the slowest of slow burns, and more of a quiet caretaker vibe instead. The action was steady enough to keep me engaged, interspersed with quiet moments where we get peeks into each of their brains. I wish we had a few more questions answered by the end of this novel, but the breadcrumbs the author has laid out for the next one make me so impatient to read it! Overall this was a great read, and a solid start to the series.

*****

Thank you to The Author Agency for the digital ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Book 1 of Wolf’s Chance sets up the trilogy, so I knew going into it that the characters' meeting and the romantic aspect of their relationship would be slow-burning. The mystery involved with Willow and her painting kept me interested. I loved the concept of the visions and dreams Willow has had. The story is surprisingly short, with a cliffhanger at the end; however, Books 2 and 3 are already out.

⭐️⭐️

The first 30% of the book I was like okay. Moody mystery hottie trying to be mysterious. Let's let the plot plot and see what happens.
By 70% I still had no idea what was happening. Where the plot was plotting. Things just seem to be happening for no reason. The fmc is finally getting answers but as the reader I'm still so confused. We're 85% in and they've only kissed and still hate each other. I'm waiting for the opposites to start attracting.
The cliffhanger ending was expected considering the whole book was a cliffhanger. No additional character development happened in the last 15%.

I really wanted to like this story. I love a good paranormal romance, but this whole story left me confused. Calling it any sort of romance would be a stretch, and I don't think I'll be continuing with the series.

Thank you Eve Mitchell and the Author Agency for an ARC of this book!

Wow! 📚🩵Wolf Shifter books are what started me down the rabbit whole😅 I could not put this book down, i really loved how Williow & Caleb both are so stubborn and play hard to get. Love their back and forth banter. Love how even though he wants her to think he doesn't care, he really actually cares about her but he wont even admit that to himself🙈! It was really nice to she how much Lilly cares for Williow as well. I love how the author really showed Williows strength prevailing even through all the trauma🫶
Williow & Caleb's unlikely but adorable story is absolutely beautiful, but we got left with a major cliffhanger?!? Need book 2 asap

This book moves slow and I'm not actually even sure Caleb likes Willow. we see glimpses of him liking her, but to be frank, Eve's MMCs in the two series I've read are just full on perks. I think if he wasn't so mean, I'd probably like this book more because I loved him when he took care of her in the hotel, but other than that she deserves better.

There’s promise here, but I said “ugh” a lot in this book too. This is definitely slow burn, which I love, but book 1 is a lot of bully vibes. There’s something here that keeps me interested, and I will continue the series; however, I also feel like everything was rushed so much.

Also, the whole “weak, frail, fragile” FMC vibe annoys the ever living fuck outta me.

3.75stars-WOLF’S CHANCE is the first instalment in Eve L Mitchell’s contemporary, adult SHADOWRIDGE PEAK paranormal, romance series- a spin off set in the author’s Blackbridge Peak series. This is wolf shifter/ rogue Caleb Foster, and twenty-six year old artist Willow Harper’s story line.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Willow and Caleb) WOLF’S CHANCE follows in the wake of Caleb Foster’s arrival in Whispering Pines. Pulled towards something unknown, Caleb Foster finds himself drawn to artist Willow Harper, a human woman but a woman who sees more than anyone could have ever imagined. Hoping for some answers, Willow and Caleb go on a journey of discovery only to find themselves on the defensive at every turn.

The world building reveals some of Willow’s background, and the health issues with which she is struggling to contend. Willow’s art has attracted the attention of several people including our story line hero, art that tells a story that should not have been told.

The relationship between Willow and Caleb is tempestuous at best. There is a definite attraction but there is no romance, and Caleb struggles with his attraction to a woman he doesn’t deserve. There are no $ex scenes.

The secondary and supporting characters include Willow’s best friend Lily Summers, and the return of Blackbridge Peak Alpha Cannon.

WOLF’S CHANCE is a story of secrets and lies, betrayal and discovery. The slow building premise is intriguing and captivating but very little is revealed leaving this reader frustrated. The characters are desperate and sad; there is no romance only distrust and questions. WOLF'S CHANCE ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned

Eve gives readers a story that is filled with intrigue, mystery, and romance. With chemistry and attraction that leaps off the pages, our MCs take you on a ride while their romance fumes under the surface, ready to ignite at any moment. I loved the approach Eve took with the bond in this book, not that it hasn’t been done before, but I love the extra that is brought to a book when you have a shifter bonding with a human. The turmoil our shifter goes through as their wolf craves their unaware mate can bring me to my knees. The longing for them wanting to be together mixed in with the confusion of what is happening always brings a delicious layer of complexity to Eve’s story.

I loved the dual POV this story provided and truly felt there is no other way to write this story. Both perspectives are needed to paint the whole picture on their growing attraction for each other, but also the struggles our MCs both face in getting to know each other. Have never met in the past, but feeling a definite pull towards each other has them both on edge.

Willow and Caleb’s story starts out slow burning, but amps up throughout the book. I am excited to see what the next book will bring to both their relationship and the mysteries that seem to surround them. As the story progresses, we begin to get hints and glimmers of the connection they share, but I believe there is so much more than we know yet. The ending was a bit unexpected, but allows so much to happen in the next books.

As always, review any author notes before reading.

This is shaping up to be a compelling shifter story and I always love when we get a human and a shifter and the push-pull. There wasn't as much of that as I'd have hoped overall but moments were there. And the pacing got sluggish in the middle.

I think her illness of having chronic severe fatigue was a neat addition in theory but it kind of put a halt to the story in the second act. She'd be out of it for days sometimes, which makes it convenient for her to not see certain things or be a participant.

I like the road trip idea of them trying to figure out what her drawings and their connection to Caleb means. But then I was confused because they start the trip, then Caleb decides against it as being dangerous, but then he starts taking her back again.

The third act is what elevated this story and made it a 4 star instead of 3 for me! Things get really interesting in the last 40 pages or so, so stick with it because that's where I really got piqued! We see pieces finally come together and why Caleb is more broken than we even thought! I'm now very excited to see what's to become of him and the more we learn of his fate and past.

Willow and Caleb’s journey in 𝐖𝐨𝐥𝐟'𝐬 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 is steeped in mystery, tension, and unanswered questions. There’s an undeniable pull between them—one neither fully understands nor trusts. As their paths intertwine, they’re forced to dig into unknowns that could change everything, all while danger looms just steps behind them.

The dynamic between Willow and Caleb crackles with sharp tension and undeniable attraction. There’s a constant push and pull, an edge to every interaction, where animosity battles with a simmering undercurrent of desire. Their connection hints at something deeper, and while the spark of romantic chemistry is there, it never fully ignites into what I hoped for. Moments of care and vulnerability surface, but they’re fleeting—quickly overtaken by suspicion and sharp words.

Still, the mystery at the heart of the story kept me intrigued and I found myself wanting more—not just answers, but a deepening in their relationship, so I’m invested and will totally be picking up the next book. I want to see where Willow and Caleb’s path leads and whether the truths they uncover might finally bring them closer—or tear them apart.

I love shifter romance. This follows the start of the relationship between Willow and Caleb. This brings slow burn to a new level. The whole time they are dealing with each other it was they meet, hate each other, then hate but intrigued by the other, hate some more, maybe attracted on a level more than they thought but still hate. There are so many secrets and mystery for Willow because she is a human being thrust into a world she thought only existed in books and movies. Caleb is trying to keep her safe while keeping her in the dark.

This is book one of a series so the cliffhanger is expected, it just took a little long to get there. I am looking forward to more in book two. There was just so much that wasn't brought out until the last third of the book. It dragged a bit, but overall a good start to the series.

🔥Shifter Romance
🔥Forbidden Romance
🔥Protective Morally Grey Alpha Male
🔥Human Love Interest
🔥Opposites Attract

🔥An Unbreakable Bond

Wolf’s Chance is a marvelous wolf shifter romance book that I absolutely enjoyed reading. Wolf’s Chance has a captivating plot, sensational characters, and a breathtaking outcome for the main characters. I immediately fell in love with both Caleb and Willow. I absolutely adored getting to know both Caleb and Willow as well as witnessing their story come to fruition. The ending for Wolf’s Chance was not what I was expecting and it had me wondering what is going to happen between Caleb and Willow. I’m hoping we get to see these two characters in the next book. Now I’m not going to reveal any details about this book because I don’t want to give spoilers on the story. However, I would certainly recommend this amazing paranormal romance for anyone to checkout and give it a read. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

I devoured this! It was so easy to read and digest everything thrown at me. While a lot was kept secret from the FMC, Willow, we get Caleb’s POV frequently enough that things are filled in pretty quickly. I loved the disability rep of Willow having ME, and that it played a part in the plot with how her dreams and drawings would drain her.

Caleb and Willow have a ton of trust issues with each other, which was understandable lol. Willow reacts about you would expect, but they come a long way while on the run and on the way to pack lands. I was NOT expecting everything that happened at the end. That was one hell of a cliffhanger that left me in tears over them😭 I expected such a different outcome after finally meeting with the shaman. I’m excited to get to the next book and hopefully get some more answers and at least a small bit of closure over these two🥹

Thank you so much to the author and the Author Agency for the gifted copy!

Shifter romance is one of my favorite subgenres and I love the fated mate trope. That being said, I really wanted to love this book. Especially since this is part one in a series so I knew going in it would end on a cliffhanger.

I don’t usually read cliffhanger books but this blurb was too enticing. The first half was good, I was interested in the mystery and I liked the tension between the MC.

The second half of this book lost momentum for me. There were just too many questions left unanswered and a lot of filler moments that didn’t add anything to the story. And I know this is a romance but this first installment was a really really slow burn.

The drama and suspense has piqued my interest and I need to know how it all comes together but it will definitely need a re-read so I can binge book two while book one is still freah on my mind.

I read this in a short time and was addicted at first but now on retrospective I don't like it.

Let me explain, the first 60% was phenonemal but the remaining 40% was boring and didn't grab my attention quite as much and I was getting tired of the MMC by then.

This caused me to think in retrospective about the actions of the MMC. He doesn't respect her boundaries, sneaking into her house multiple times, while she agreed to go the voyage with him, he made sure that she was unconscious during a large part of the voyage, doesn't reply to her obvious questions when they're totally logical considering her view points and even sees her naked while she's unconscious... WTF, dude! And they're supposed to end together...

In the quiet town of Whispering Pines, Willow runs her art studio, reveling in the peacefulness of her surroundings. But her world takes an unexpected turn when she realizes that Caleb, a mysterious stranger, has been watching her every move. The tension escalates when Caleb uncovers a shocking secret—Willow's artwork reveals details about supernatural beings she thought were only legends and she shouldn't know anything about. Thrust into a dangerous spotlight, Willow's life spirals into a whirlwind of intrigue and peril. With brilliantly crafted characters and a gripping storyline, this series promises to keep you on the edge of your seat, and I can't wait to dive into the next installment!.

A Twisty, Turny, and Totally Addictive Ride

This story is a wild ride full of mystery, intrigue, and secrets galore! The journey is expertly woven, with characters that leap off the page and draw you in. And then, of course, there's the deliciously tense romance between Willow and Caleb - a love-hate dynamic that's as frustrating as it is fascinating. Their banter is top-notch, and the chemistry between them is undeniable. But just when you think you're getting close to the truth, the rug is pulled out from under you. That cliffhanger ending? Cruel, yet brilliant. I'm hooked, and I need answers ASAP!

Wolf's chance is the first book in The ShadowRidge Peak series. If you love paranormal love stories like me, you absolutely have to read it. I think the story between Caleb and Willow is something unique and there is understanding but also chemistry, but you will see how despite the situation they are in they will have to trust and rely on each other. But I also loved the storytelling and the world building. What did I find intriguing about this book? Absolutely the mysteries, the secrets.. And even if there is a cliffhanger I can't wait to continue this series... I want to read more of this series. Absolutely vote 4 🩷

OMG! I need to read the Blackridge Peak Series!!! This is the first book I read by Eve Mitchell and I couldn’t put it down. It is a slow burn romance with shifters and secrets. Wolf’s Chance is the first book in the Shadowridge Peak Series and is Caleb and Willow’s story. I love their chemistry and the world building. I’m new to this world, but from what I read so far sucked me in and made me want to know more!! Also, that twist/cliffy, the suspense of waiting! I really did enjoy their story and can’t wait to read more about this world.

Oh my goodness this book!!!!!! Eve L Mitchell always delivers fantastically well written books and this one was no different. The banter between characters was perfect and had me laughing at their antics. But it was just funny it had some heart hitting parts. The challenges that Willow and Caleb are intense. They have a past they both are dealing with and an uncertain future. I was thinking n the she of my seat the whole time with the other hat is going to happen next question at every turn of the page. There is also some foreshadowing that has had me constantly thinking about the next book. There is maybe a bit of a cliffhanger but it wasn’t unbearable. Thank goodness it’s a quick release though because I am completely emotionally invested in these characters.

Well finally a less than perfect fmc

I could cry with thankfulness. Just reading about what is my reality with a chronic illness has made me feel hopeful that some of the stigma surrounding these types of conditions can be broken. As usual Eve has written this with thoughtful insight. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys a paranormal novel with a twist. Bring on book 2, after I've had a nap!

I couldn’t put this down. It was mysterious, suspenseful and adventurous. I wanted to know what was going to happen next! There wasn’t much romance, but you could feel the attraction and tension between two main characters. I don’t want to spoil it for you, so I won’t go into details, but if you like shifters and stories that keep you on the edge of the seat, you will probably enjoy this. Side note: this is a trilogy and this book ends kinda cliffhanger-ry!

I don't read many shifter books, this is probably the first one I'm reviewing but I enjoyed Willow and Caleb's story. Caleb and Willow were well thought out and developed and the way the author integrated Willow's struggles with ME into the story was flawless. It was a unique plot that had twists and turns and a bit of mystery to keep me reading because I want to know what was going to happen next. And that cliffhanger ending left me wanting to read the next book in the trilogy.

A fantastic start to a new series. Caleb and Willow meet under strange circumstances. Their characters are well thought out and developed. I loved this book another great read from Eve. The story of Willow and Caleb, how she is battling an illness, that gets her painting things that somehow involves Caleb. This draws him to her. There is chemistry between them but neither are accepting it. The fact blackridge characters show an appearance made it special can't wait for book 2.

Too slow for start

I like this author, but there were almost 200 pages of placid, but kind of weird background before much of anything happened. I’m interested enough in the female main character that I’ll probably start the next book. I am really apathetic about the male main character. He’s not even a little bit likable or relatable thus far.

This book was so interesting and so addictive to read.
I genuinely think I’ve been left with more questions than answers and I cannot wait for the next book to come out so I can see where it is going.
Love the representation of ME and how the FMC works so hard to not let it hold her back in life in any way.
The MMC is a grumbly boy who seems very damaged. Feel like we still don’t know too much about him yet. The romance has blossom as such as yet in this first book. At first they were kind of tolerating each other and then they because sort of a crutch for each other but it hasn’t been romantic yet as such.
Really fab, unusual story and I cannot wait to see how it progresses!

I enjoyed this book a lot more that I originally thought and it really gave of twilight vibes which I enjoyed because I actually really like those movies. However, there was a lot of questions left to answer and it felt like there could've been mrore things revealed at the end. The plot was very predictable and it became repetitive. I will be reading the next book as soon as possible though because I want to know how this will end.
