Gladwynn Grant Mysteries #1

Gladwynn Grant Gets Her Footing

Rate this book
After being laid off from her job as a librarian at a small college, Gladwynn Grant isn’t sure what her next step in life is. When a job as a small town newspaper reporter opens up in the town her grandmother Lucinda Grant lives in, she decides to take it to get away from a lot of things – Bennett Steele for one.

Lucinda has been living alone since Gladwynn’s grandfather passed away six years ago and she isn’t a take-it-easy, rock-on-your-front-porch kind of grandma. She’s always on the go and lately, she’s been on the go with a man who Gladwynn doesn’t know.

Gladwynn thought Brookstone was a small, quiet town, but within a few days of being there, she has to rethink that notion. Someone has cut the bank loan officer’s brakes, threatening letters are being sent, and memories of a jewelry theft from the 1990s have everyone looking at the cold case again.

And what, if anything, will Gladwynn uncover about her new hometown and her grandmother’s new male friend? And what will she do about her grandmother’s attempt to set her up with the handsome Pastor Luke Callahan?

I’m so glad I found this cozy mystery. So many cozies are so heavily thematic and waste so much word count on teaching me a new hobby or describing the third petal on the mums in the antique pot outside of the quaint bookstore…I’ve been over it for a while. This cozy took me back to the joy of a simple mystery with a cast of colorful but relatable characters, like getting cozy with a good old MC Beaton mystery.

Christian cozy mystery set in Pennsylvania. I loved the setting and the main character and her quirky grandma. There's a lot of time spent in a coffee shop and talks of books. Takes place near Easter, but I thought it was winter because there was mention of snow and how cold it was. Very cozy:)

This story was interesting, but seemed to be a slower read for me than most of what I've recently read. I liked the interaction between Gladwynn and her grandmother. I enjoyed the fact that the main storyline wasn't about romance, but rather about Gladwynn learning to become a newspaper reporter and in the process helping solve a decades old mystery.
I received this book as an advance reader copy from the author. The opinion expressed is entirely my own.

This is an enjoyable cozy mystery. I like Gladwynn as an amateur sleuth. It is her character that makes this cozy mystery work. The transition from being a research librarian to investigative reporter for a small town newspaper makes for fun reading. The mystery is a bit complex and involves a cold case burglary as well as current nefarious activities. The novel is a light read with no heart throbbing suspense nor heartbreaking tragedy.

Howeler adds personal interest to the story by Gladwynn having to face an old boyfriend trying to restore their relationship. Gladwynn also develops good relationships with a few local men indicating the possibility of future romance.

I recommend this cozy mystery. It has fun main and support characters and some good sleuthing by Gladwynn. I look forward to reading about more of her adventures.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book through Celebrate Lit. My comments are an independent and honest review.

As a writer and a former newspaper reporter and a former librarian, I enjoy reading stories that contain these elements. They offer so much potential for use in crafting an enthralling tale—especially with a cunning character like Gladwynn found in this suspense novel. As she learns to report on the things happening around town, she is caught up in a mystery—not only in the present day, but one connected a cold case from years past. And her grandmother, when she lives with, is a hoot. All the unique characters in the novel come across as realistic and engaging. The intriguing plot has some twists and surprises too. This compelling book holds much to entertain the spirit and to provoke the mind, even after the satisfying conclusion. It’s easy to read, and I look forward to more with this feisty character. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.

OVERALL STAR RATING: 4/5
CLEAN RATING: 5/5

Another fun mystery read! For starters, this takes place in a small town and there’s a matchmaking grandma involved. Need I say more? I loved how well planned out this plot was from start to finish. Intriguing mysteries to be solved, great character development and a lot of humor woven throughout.

Gladwynn Grant has taken a new job in the small town of Brookstone as a newspaper reporter and moves in with her grandma Lucinda. Lucinda is a spitfire – she has sneaky plans to set her granddaughter up with their church’s pastor. Meanwhile, Lucinda keeps very busy with a mysterious male companion of her own.

Although Gladwynn’s job is to simply report the news, she can’t help but poke her nose into her detective side for the near murders and jewelry heist cold case that are suddenly all a buzz. The town and all its people are “quirky” to say the least. The author did a fantastic job bringing this story to life. I can’t wait to see what kind of chaos ensues between Gladwynn and her spunky grandmother in book two!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I read her book at last! I enjoyed the mystery. It was quite a journey for a young woman transition from a city and living with her grandmother and solving a mystery. The best way for me to describe this book is Nancy Drew (news reporter) meets Aurora Teagarden Mysteries (a librarian. There were couple moments in this book reminded me from the first movie). It is clean and no bad language. It is funny, wholesome, and town small vibes.

This cozy mystery was a really wonderful read! I loved the style of writing and the quirky characters Lisa created. Gladwynn is a big fan of the more vintage style of dress and hair and I loved that so much. She’s also book lover extraordinaire as well as a classic movie buff. But it’s her quiet determination to find things out that I truly enjoyed getting to see. She is kind in her speaking but doesn’t let people steamroll her. Her love of research and discovery leads her to finding out all the best kept secrets and solving mysteries no one else could figure out. Plus she’s got some romantic interest from two entertaining men that I cannot wait to read more of soon. The next book is sure to bring us more intrigue as well as the next chapter in Gladwynns love life…which I will definitely be here for. Grab your copy of this sweet story soon, it’s certainly worth the read!

This was an interesting story involving the main character starting a new job as a newspaper reporter. Gladwynn Grant finds a new job at a newspaper company after being laid off from her old job and ending things with her ex. She moves in with her grandmother who is quite a character. She has a tense relationship with her parents as Gladwynn is the only one in her family who isn't loving a successful life.
I enjoyed the characters in this story, the possibility of multiple suitors for Gladwynn, the chance that an old case may be tied in with a current case., and the banter and relationship between Gladwynn and her grandmother.

“The people in this county had a lot more skeletons in their closet than Gladwynn had ever imagined.”

After being let go from her job as a research librarian, Gladwynn Grant flees her hometown and her self-centered ex-boyfriend to resettle in a small town 200 miles away, Brookstone, PA, where her grandmother lives. Gladwynn takes a job as a cub reporter, where she gets so little respect, “She was beginning to think she should legally change her name to New Girl.” Lisa Howeler sets up the classic cozy in Gladwynn Grant Gets
Her Footing.

Multiple- near murders, a ten year-old- unsolved jewelry heist, rumors of buried French treasure, an antagonistic relationship between the paper Gladwynn works for and the police and fire departments. Plus, don’t forget the six degrees of separation law- in this case, everybody either knows somebody well, or is related.

I wished for a list of characters at the front to refer to. Some, like Daryl Stabler, owner of prized land and all-around jerk, you won’t forget. But, I highly suggest either taking notes on characters or reading on kindle so you can refer back to names as they re-occur.

Gladwynn and her grandmother have a very unusual relationship. Both are a little snarky, Grandma likes to keep her social life private, which causes the investigative and protective side of Gladwynn to come out. Yet they love each other fiercely. Grandma keeps pushing a certain young man towards Gladwynn. But, by the time I finished the book and read the provided introductory chapter of the next book, I was getting a strong reminder of the love triangles of the Hannah Swensen Mysteries. I must admit I bought the next book in the Gladwynn Grant series and will probably devour it today.

I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. I also bought my own copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Notable Quotables:
(Fave observation quotes.)
“people can do things totally out of their norm if they get angry enough.”

“That’s the weird things about memories, though. They follow you no matter where you go.”

(Fave wisdom quote.)
“It can’t be easy trying to step into shoes as big as Grandpa’s.” Luke sighed. “I like to think of it as following in his footsteps instead. I could never fill his shoes, but I’m more than happy to follow in his footsteps.”

(Fave spiritual truth.)
“It’s a weird world we live in.” “It’s a heartbroken world we live in,” Lionel said. “If only more people knew how God created them to love and be loved. Your grandfather did his very best to make sure everyone he came in contact with knew that.”

(Fave funny- ironic quote.)
“You’re learning. I’m proud of you.” She rolled her eyes as she sat down. “Grey gods indeed.”

The main character sure does have an unusual first name. I loved how we find out that it is a name one of her ancestors had. The story has an old time feeling about it with Gladwyn and her classic hair from times gone by, bright red lipstick and living with her grandma in an old house with lots of history. The town is quaint with a feel of “The Gilmore Girls” when Gladwyn attends the town council meeting. What a spectacle it was with raised voices and threats flying back and forth. The author sets the stage for a fun mystery.

Gladwyn’s relationship with her grandma is a bit odd to me. They are both sassy to each other and at times I think they mean what they say in their sarcastic voice. The bottom line is they have a very close relationship and worry about each other. I’m pretty sure grandma can hold her own in any situation.

Now for the story there sure is a lot going on. Threatening notes, car accidents that really aren’t an accident, jewelry heist never solved, land that people are fighting over and townspeople gossiping constantly caught this reader off guard. I was impressed with Gladwyn and her ability to find answers to questions that help solve crimes. There are a few twists in the story and overall I thought it was a nice story.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

I really didn’t like this book. I was really hoping I would. This is my first thought on reading it. I am complaining and really want to throw this book. It is only the 3rd page. It starts out about newspaper reporter having to to a mvA. I’m I know those happen. Here is the part that I absolutely hate. One reporter says to another “I hope it’s a fatal. We need a centerpiece”. I think that is awful, I know this book is fiction but too many people and kids have died in mvA lately. What do you all think am I over reacting because with the boys here this week Joe has been on our minds a lot and then someone asked me about Joe’s accident today when we was at Wendy’s .

I know that is personal information but my son was killed in a hit and run in 2021 so that statement was harsh to me.

I did finish this book and it turned out better than I thought it would but it just wasn’t a hit with me.I am hoping the next book is better. I do believe that mystery readers that don’t like alike of gory details would probably give this book 4 or 5 stars. Yes, there are a couple of mysteries solved in the pages of this book.

Gladwynn’s grandmother is someone that I believe we would all like to have in our lives.

I received a complimentary copy from the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed this cozy small-town mystery!

I recommend if you like contemporary mysteries with a vintage feel, quirky characters, light romance, and clean Christian reads. Oh, and cats.

I struggled to get into another book when I finished 𝑹𝒆𝒃𝒆𝒄𝒄𝒂 by Daphne Du Maurier. After DNF-ing a couple of books (for now, not forever), I finally settled into 𝑮𝒍𝒂𝒅𝒘𝒚𝒏𝒏 𝑮𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝑮𝒆𝒕𝒔 𝑯𝒆𝒓 𝑭𝒐𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈. I guess I just needed a fun, lighthearted read to cleanse the palate.

“𝘐’𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘺 𝘰𝘥𝘥𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘭. 𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘬𝘪𝘥𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵 – 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭, 𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘴 𝘰𝘳 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘸𝘪𝘴𝘦 – 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘦𝘳 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦.”

Twenty-seven-year-old Gladwynn Grant is living with her spunky, widowed grandmother after being laid off as a college librarian. Her new job as a small-town newspaper reporter proves to be anything but boring.

Even though she’s warned to stick to reporting, Gladwynn can’t resist doing a little of her own investigating when a land dispute, a mysterious accident, and a 1990s unsolved jewelry theft get the whole town talking. While adjusting to her new job, she’s also trying to keep an ex off her back, figure out who her grandmother’s mystery man is, and dodge her grandmother’s matchmaking attempts.

Definitely a cute story! I’ll have to continue the series when I get a chance. The only downside for me was that it could’ve used one final, quick proofread.

Cozy Mystery books are always a fun read. Gladwynn Grant Gets Her Footing by Lisa R. Howeler is the latest in this genre that I have read. Lisa R. Howeler is a new to me author. This book is Book 1 in the Gladwynn Grant Mystery Series. I am excited to start the series and to enjoy a new to me author.

I really enjoyed this book from the very first chapter. The book is set in a small town, Brookstone, where Gladwynn Grant has just moved to and is now living with her widowed Grandma. Gladwynn is here for a new start and a new career as a NewsPaper Reporter. Grandma Lu is very active and even has a male friends that Gladwynn wasn't aware of. Gladwynn is put right to work when townspeople are threatened and a cold case from the 1990's is bought up again. Gladwynn is on the case and works diligently to solve the Mysteries in the small town. I LOVE that Grandma Lu is also trying to play matchmaker and set Gladwynn up with Pastor Luke Callahan from town. Grandma Lu and Gladwynn really have a good relationship and their conservations are always fun loving. The book is filled with so many twists and turns and really keeps the reader intrigued. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Cozy Mystery books. GOOD BOOK!

Lisa R. Howeler’s Gladwynn Grant Gets Her Footing was exactly what I needed this month. As my life unraveled, Gladwynn grounded me.

I adore old black-and-white movies, and Howeler’s love for them shines through this story. As I read, I found myself imagining who might voice the audiobook. It would have to be someone with the spirit of a 1930s–50s actress—young, curious, full of spark. Nothing too mature or sophisticated. In the end, I landed on Ava Gardner. I’d love to know who Howeler envisions as Gladwynn’s voice.

The story itself was a joy. The characters are well-written, and I especially loved the multigenerational bond between Gladwynn and her grandmother. Their relationship felt natural and playful. While the book centers on a crime mystery, I was drawn to the potential love interests. Like in a classic film, several were introduced—each a possibility—and it became a delightful guessing game. Is it him? No... maybe him? I loved the suspense and the fun of it all.
I’m glad I picked up two books from this series—now I have to find out who the mysterious man is. If Howeler keeps stringing me along, I’ll happily buy the third.

In a world full of darkness, Howeler brings light—and a whole lot of fun.

“A little bit of mystery, a dash of romance, and a whole lot of heart.”

After losing her job as a research librarian at a small college campus, and breaking off a relationship with her boyfriend, Gladwynn Grant is looking for a change, and so when a job as an investigative reporter for a newspaper in the small town where her widowed grandmother lives opens up, Gladwynn moves to Brookstone, takes the job and moves into the large Victorian style house where she grew up spending summers with her grandparents.

Gladwynn soon finds out that the sleepy little town she moved to is anything but quiet. Within a few days of working at the paper, she finds herself neck deep in investigating multiple leads for stories, some of which run the risk of putting her in grave danger, like the cold case jewelry heist that was never solved. Someone’s car has been tampered with, anonymous threatening letters are being sent, and the officer in charge keeps reminding Gladwynn to stick to reporting and let the police do the investigating.

And Gladwynn’s grandma is anything but a retired, front porch-sitting old lady. She’s always on the go and she seems to be spending a lot of time with a man that Gladwynn doesn’t know, and when she refuses to tell her who he is, Gladwynn puts her sleuthing skills to work to find out. Oh, and grandma is also playing matchmaker and trying to set Gladwynn up with the pastor of her church. Nevermind that he is rumored to be seeing someone else. 🤭

This book is branded as a modern mystery with a vintage feel and I couldn’t agree more! It’s listed under the Christian fiction genre but I didn’t pick up on any overt faith themes. I did notice a lack of cursing and sexual overtones, which was refreshing. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of this series!

Gladwyn Grant Gets Her Footing by Lisa Robinson-Howeler is a Clean, Cozy Mystery. Considering I once thought about becoming a librarian, Gladwynn Grant’s former occupation intrigued me. Her willingness to move from her hometown to live with her grandmother and work as a reporter created an exciting story.

I loved how the author developed the characters and storyline, including her ex-boyfriend, whom she left behind. The mystery surrounding an accident plays a prominent role in this story. I felt the author did an excellent job building the suspense, providing information, and creating an interesting story that kept me reading.

My one complaint is the highly abrupt way the book ends. I felt like there should have been more before ending the book. However, this book is the first book in this series, and I look forward to seeing how the storyline continues.

So, if you want a clean, cozy mystery, check out Gladwyn Grant Gets Her Footing by Lisa Robinson-Howeler.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

Gladwynn Grant Gets Her Footing is a wonderful cozy mystery that I enjoyed reading and am hoping that a sequel will follow! The characters are wonderful and the story moves along at a great pace!

The romances were fun and cute. I definitely approved of them for the girls. And the mystery was fun. I love these cozy mysteries that aren’t scary or really suspenseful. They keep you entertained without keeping you up at night.

Going from a librarian to a reporter is quite the career change. But Gladwynn finds it fulfilling as well as slightly exhilarating. Plus she has some side investigating to do to solve an old mystery. You’ll love this quaint mystery novel. It’s definitely one I’d read again.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

This was the perfect kind of cozy and relaxing small-town mystery.

It started off slow as you meet the characters and town. I started to get more invested as the story went on and the characters were developed along with the mystery and plot.

I really enjoyed the fun and eclectic collection of towns people. So many different personalities, and while I sometimes forgot who a character was, I was only drawn in to want to keep reading and learn more about these people.

I loved Gladwynn's relationship with her grandmother.

Vince is my current favorite male character. Luke, the pastor, gives me slightly weird vibes though I am not sure that's what we are supposed to get from him. Tanner is intriguing. And of course, so many other fascinating characters as well that I look forward to reading more of.

There were also gentle Christian themes throughout.

All around it was a delightful read and I am definitely going to have to get my hands on the next book.

I found Gladwynn Grant Gets Her Footing to be a fun and entertaining little mystery book to read. I enjoyed the humor and was often wondering of who done it. There were a few scenes that were a slower than I would like but it quickly picked back up. Overall, I thought it was a pretty good story and a great introduction to the author, Lisa R Howeler.
Gladwynn Grant Gets Her Footing four and a half stars. I believe fans of clean cozy mysteries will not want to miss out on it. I would love to read the next installment from the Gladwynn Grant Mysteries series, Gladwynn Grant Takes Center Stage, to see what happens next.

Gladwyn Grant is so much fun! This book took me a few chapters to get into the flow of the story. Lots of characters, and wordy at times. After a while, as I got to know each character, I couldn’t put the book down.

Gladwyn herself is always getting herself in over her head, as she tries desperately to figure out all of the mysteries and rumors circulating in her neighborhood. She’s a great reporter, but doesn’t know how to let things go.

Her Grandma Lucinda is spunky, and at the same time a sweetheart. It’s hard not to like her.

I thought Gladwyn’s ex was extremely annoying. All that to say, Lisa did a great job portraying him in that light, as he really made my skin crawl. Lol!

I’m excited to see how each of the other 2 Gladwyn books play out. A great cozy mystery that I’d recommend to anyone who enjoys suspense mixed with a little bit of comedy.

This was an intriguing story with the main character starting a new job as a newspaper reporter, giving her the perfect way to get involved with local crimes. I like the way the other characters were introduced, and it didn't take long to know who would be important in the MC's life. I especially enjoyed meeting Lucinda who is quite entertaining and adds a bit of spice to the book. I like the way an old crime was woven into a current mystery. I also enjoyed the possibility of romance with multiple men as potential suitors. At the same time, Gladwynn is an independent woman who is enjoying the opportunity to begin a new life on her own. If you're looking for a fun, easy read, I highly recommend this story. I look forward to more capers with Gladwynn!

This book is so much fun. Gladwynn is a really fun character. We get to watch her transform from an out-of-work librarian to an amazing newspaper reporter in a small town.

There's a good bit of family relationships involved in this story. Gladwynn and her grandmother have a very funny relationship. I quite enjoyed it and I think they almost stole the show. Grandma Lu is well connected and she's got a lot of friends who are male, and she's also got some ideas about who Gladwynn might should be with. This story has several twists and turns, and I enjoyed that.

I felt that this story was fun and had a lot of faith in it. I loved Grandma Lu's personality and her perspectives. I would be very happy to read more of this series.

Thanks to Celebrate Lit for my digital copy of this book. This review is my own and a positive review is never required.

This is a Christian, small-town cozy mystery that is lots of fun! I love the relationship between Gladwynn and her grandmother! Gladwynn has a new job at the local newspaper where she fears she will be forever known as "New Girl," but she's starting to make friends and "get her footing."

Mysterious things start happening in town - cut car brake lines, anonymous threatening letters, an accident that doesn't seem so accidental - oh, and there's also this old jewelry theft cold case. There's also an ex-boyfriend not ready to be "ex." And let's not forget good old grandma's covert love life AND her insistence on throwing Gladwynn together with Pastor Callahan. I love the small-town feel! Overall, it’s a cute, cozy mystery!

I enjoyed this cozy mystery by Lisa R. Howeler. Twenty-seven year old Gladwynn Grant was a research librarian at Brock College. When she got laid off, she decided to take a job 200 miles away in Brookstone, Pennsylvania and move in with her seventy year old grandmother, Lucinda. The job she is hired for is reporter at the Brookstone Beacon. She begins her on-the-job training when investigating two attempted murders and a jewelry heist cold case. This book is set in a small town with a lot of interesting townspeople and a hint of a romance for both Grant women! I liked the fact that Gladwynn rescued two cats! I look forward to seeing what happens in Brookstone next.

I thought this was a fun story with fun characters. I liked the mystery and the scraps that Gladwynn got into as she tried to solve it. I liked seeing her grow as she learned how to be an investigative reporter. I also loved her grandma and her spunk. I definitely will read more books with these characters and can’t wait to see what mysteries they get into next.

I absolutely loved Gladwynn Grant and the whole town of Brookstone-- from her grandmother's Victorian house to the quirky people at the newspaper office to the out-of-control town meetings to Brewed Awakening cafe. I loved the pacing of this novel, with the mystery leisurely unfolding as I grew to know the many interesting characters in the small town. And what an assortment of men in uniform that may be potential love interests for the adorable Gladwynn. I can't wait to read the next in the series!
