Edward Lee is an American novelist specializing in the field of horror, and has authored 40 books, more than half of which have been published by mass-market New York paperback companies such as Leisure/Dorchester, Berkley, and Zebra/Kensington. He is a Bram Stoker award nominee for his story "Mr. Torso," and his short stories have appeared in over a dozen mass-market anthologies, including THE BEST AMERICAN MYSTERY STORIES OF 2000, Pocket's HOT BLOOD series, and the award-wining 999. Several of his novels have sold translation rights to Germany, Greece, and Romania. He also publishes quite actively in the small-press/limited-edition hardcover market; many of his books in this category have become collector's items. While a number of Lee's projects have been optioned for film, only one has been made, HEADER, which was released on DVD to mixed reviews in June, 2009, by Synapse Films.
Lee is particularly known for over-the-top occult concepts and an accelerated treatment of erotic and/or morbid sexual imagery and visceral violence.

In the late-70s he served in the U.S. Army's 1st Armored Division, in Erlangen, West Germany, then, for a short time, was a municipal police officer in Cottage City, Maryland. Lee also attended the University of Maryland as an English major but quit in his last semester to pursue his dream of being a horror novelist. For over 15 years, he worked as the night manager for a security company in Annapolis, Maryland, while writing in his spare time. In 1997, however, he became a full-time writer, first spending several years in Seattle and then moving to St. Pete Beach, Florida, where he currently resides.
Of note, the author cites as his strongest influence horror legend H. P. Lovecraft; in 2007, Lee embarked on what he calls his "Lovecraft kick" and wrote a spate of novels and novellas which tribute Lovecraft and his famous Cthulhu Mythos. Among these projects are THE INNSWICH HORROR, "Trolley No. 1852," HAUNTER OF THE THRESHOLD, GOING MONSTERING, "Pages Torn From A Travel Journal," and "You Are My Everything." Lee promises more Lovecraftian work on the horizon.

First published in 1997, The Pig is one of the earliest examples of modern extreme horror, or "hardcore horror" as it was originally called at the time.
The prose is incredible, one moment it's like the poetry of Nabokov, and the next moment it is probably the most brain-rotted slop you will ever read in your entire life.
The level of depravity feels like somebody set a high-score in the 90's by making Pac-Man jump over a ghost, and people have been trying to figure out how to beat it ever since.
So don't sleep on The Pig, one of the iconic foundational texts of extreme horror.

I get what this book IS, I just found it juvenile. It reads like a fucked up 12-year old boy’s even more fucked up fantasies. Lots of cum guzzling and beastiality. Weedy lame guy gets “powered up” due to accident and circumstance, not because he’s noteworthy or skilled in any way. All the women are disgusting, deprived junkies, victims of violence, or rabid sex crazies just begging for it. The writing was just okay. Not sure if Lee meant for the characters to be such caricatures or if it was just bad writing.
Overall, there’s gross shit in here if that’s what you’re after, but it was all just meh. The two other male characters were laughable. Like, THIS is what you think is edgy? Not very impressed with Edward Lee’s writing if this is a good indicator of his other books.

Jeśli horrory spod ręki Jacka Ketchuma są ekstremalne, to Edward Lee ma osobne miejsce w piekle zapewnione. To jest mocne! Horror ekstremalny przez duże E. Wiele stron nie ma, ale nie należy tego potraktować jako lekkiej lektury na wieczór. Jest to wersja hard książki dla dorosłych czytelników. Moim skromnym zdaniem ta książka przebija "Ludzi z Bagien" o 100%. Takiego Edwarda uwielbiam.

The Pig was ok. Like I'm sure it could have been worse. I also know for a fact it could have been better. Then again I did not go into this expecting anything great. I bought this book (I actually bought the full trilogy) because on r/extremehorrorlit someone posted a picture of the first page and it was so fucked up I just had to learn the context. Not sure what that says about me. So Let me share the first paragraph with you all.
Yes. That is actually how Edward Lee started this short little story. Before you ask the answer is that yes indeed there are far more troubling and stomach churning scenes that could be written. Mr. Lee chose to include many of them in this.....interesting.....story of his. By interesting I mostly mean fucked up and depraved. But like also, I did choose to buy and read the book after I read that first paragraph. So I guess my nausea is just as much my fault as it is his.
This story actually did have some really interesting points. Some of them just came really out of left field. Mostly it just seams like The Pig was an excuse to get all the most perverse ideas that where in Edward Lee's head out and on paper. Like he just wrote down the most depraved things he could think of to make us all uncomfortable. He was very successful in that endeavor. This book certainly made me uncomfortable more than once.
There is honestly not a single likeable character in this book. Normally I don't enjoy that at all, but this time around I didn't mind. Based on the content and the situation you can't really expect it to be about good people.
My real issue with this story is that I was reading it for the horror and it took a while to really get there. Sure there where little sprinkles or horror through the first three quarters of the book, but most of that time was just sexual depravity, mental issues and story building. The real horror part of the story didn't actually happen until the last quarter of the story. Granted we did need the background and the story building. I just wish the horror part had gone on longer since that's why I was here. Despite the first paragraph I actually did not buy this book because I wanted to read about bestiality.
I actually am a bit excited to read The House, which is the sequel to this book, since the story building has already happened I want to see where the horror of this can actually go. Since I have bought all three I will read all three. Even if I don't like the second one any more that I did the first. We shall see how that goes.

Edward Lee, THE PIG, Indipendent legions.
Più volte sono stato tentato di mollare la lettura, perché questa roba è troppo per me. E non sono un ragazzino che si nasconde davanti a sangue e budella e sperma. Qui c'è un'escalation di violenze e sadismo senza limiti, e io dei limiti li ho, anche nell'immaginazione. Ma poi mi sono detto: "Vediamo dove arriva, non molliamo", anche perché qui una storia c'è, e anche una prosa coinvolgente. Poi ho anche trovato una chiave di lettura. Questo libro è per tutti quelli che "Se ci credi ce la fai", ma soprattutto per quelli che "sono disposto a tutto per raggiungere i miei obiettivi", figli di una certa filosofia da Maria Filippa che non mi appartiene. Leonard è disposto a tutto, sopporta tutto, ma è un tutto per me inconcepibile, una discesa in abissi di atrocità disturbante e a tratti disgustosa.
Però. Però è tutto qui. Bidimensionale, una superficie fatta di brandelli rivoltanti. Estremo, ma niente profondità. Lee è un maestro in questo genere, ma non fa per me. Lo apprezzo sulla breve distanza, tipo Mr Torso, ma per i romanzi, io scendo qui. Non è tanto la violenza a disturbarmi, finito un Evenson ne inizierei subito un altro. O un Di Orazio, per dire. Scavo psicologico, critica sociale, finezza introspettiva dietro a quella violenza. In Lee no, solo aberrazioni senza fine e senza limiti. Può essere divertente, ecco, ma fine a sé stesso. Se avete voglia di roba davvero estrema, con questo libro vi togliete ogni prurito.

Leonard is a young man with an aspiring dream to become a movie director. However, to make his dream big, he needs the equipment and finances. But when he makes a deal with the mafia he soon realizes his first big mistake and soon enough he's given the chance either to die or to film pornos for his new friends. Leonard not thinking the least of it agrees, eventually discovering the underground world of n*crophilia, snuff films, and beastiality. Leonard is a man running out of time, but when The Pig arrives it seems his life is about to come to an end.
Edward Lee's first entry in The Pig trilogy is a grotesque horror story, that whilst it does have a couple of supernatural elements towards the end, is a very grounded and terrifying tale based on harsh reality. It's a gruesome, disgusting, and vile situation that Lee thankfully sprinkles a little humor into to make the read a little easier. It's a fantastically plotted novella with some of the most disturbing scenes I've ever read.
Overall: It's an outstanding start to this trilogy that had me gobsmacked. The ending was a surprise! 10/10

Sorry, ale nie. Mam za sobą 1/5 książki i pasuje. Dostałam tę książkę jako wyzwanie czytelnicze od koleżanki, ale grzecznie podziękuję za nie😕
Czytałam już kilka horrorów. Mam za sobą przecież „Owsiki” pana Tomasza Siwca, czy „Piekielną rzeźnię” tegoż autora, ale większego bestialstwa, makabryczność, to ja w życiu nie czytałam. To nie na moje nerwy. Zoofilia, nekrofilia, obdzieranie ze skóry, jakieś potworne tortury kobiet tzw. lekkich obyczajów.
Nie wiem co siedzi w głowie autora, ale to jest przerażajace.
A o czym jest tak naprawdę historia? O mężczyźnie, który pragnął nakręcić film jako nastolatek, ale życie/los się na niego uwziął i doznał wielkiej krzywdy…
Więcej nie piszę. Nie chce wiedzieć co jest dalej, nie chcę wiedzieć jak się ta historia kończy. Ja chce zapomnieć …
