I wasn’t really certain what I was getting into when I started this book but I was quickly drawn in to a world of interesting characters and intriguing plot. The book tells of a group of individuals with differing abilities: Nick, the amnesic Hero; Melissa the kick-ass bodyguard; Stacy the heart of the group; and Jason the innocent crafted into a vengeful fighter. It is a quest tale in the tradition of Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower Series” or LotR with these individuals joining together for a common goal.
Labeling this as “urban fantasy” really limits the scope of all that the book comprises. The story also has strong elements of mystery and adventure. The action sequences alone make it worth reading as White’s ability to craft action on the page that easily appears within the reader’s mind is utilized throughout the novel.
Self-discovery is at the core of the story with many characters searching for meaning in both their lives and in the relationships they have with those around them. Even the group’s German shepherd Blitz has an interesting back-story. Since this is part of a series, it’s obvious that we’re only scratching the surface of what these characters have to offer and how unique their own stories will become. This is an adventurous treat for anyone wanting to begin a fantastical journey into a mysterious world of supernatural abilities, indestructible foes, and teenage angst. Ultimately, this is a wonderful beginning to what promises to be a very interesting and engaging series.

Without spoilers, I will say that The Pull is a fantastic scifi adventure with plenty of excitement and some mystery to boot. It's a little rough around the edges. But this is just the first book. And my enjoyment of it was in no way hampered by the few flaws I saw. I highly recommend reading it if you like a good action/scifi story. Also appreciated the use of strong female characters in a genre that often reduces women to screaming helpless lumps. Not these women. These will grab a staff and a crossbow and make you wish you'd never seen the day that you would incur their wrath. Definitely looking forward to the next one in the series which I'm told will be coming soon.
