Charleston Condors

Summer Catch

Rate this book
Newly hired Charleston Condors’ coach Jonathan Kelley is very aware of all the uphill battles he’s got to climb.

There’s a new owner he’s got to please. New culture to implement. New players to train. New rules to follow.

But one rule hasn't don't spend so much time flirting with the cute bartender via text that you start to wonder if you're straight, after all.

But Kieran doesn’t just make the best drinks in Charleston, or own the Pirate’s Booty, the most fun bar in town, he’s kind and sweet and undeniably hot.

He makes Jon long for things he’s never craved, not ever before. But Jon’s never lived in fear. He goes after what he wants, and what he wants is Kieran.

Maybe this summer, the Condors won't be the only ones scoring touchdowns.

Jonathan & Kieran
Rating: 3.7 ⭐

- NFL Coach/Bar Owner
- Friends-to-Lovers
- Bi-awakening
- Charleston Setting
- First Times
- Low Angst
- Coming Out

This is an intro read to the Charleston Condors series, cameos included. It was a fun and spicy read about the new head coach in town meeting the owner of a popular bar, changing his life forever.

I liked that they got to know each other and became friends before deciding to date. Yes, they kind of keep their relationship a secret to not interfere with Jon's first season coaching but the people closest to them knew so it was never an issue for them. It was sweet to watch Jon's feelings develop and solidify for Kieran and while Kieran knew how he felt about Jon, he never pushed or rushed him. They became a great support system to each other and falling into a relationship was so much easier since they were already comfortable with each other.

There's sexy times, friendly and flirty text messages, loving moments, and great support systems throughout this book. It was also fun getting glimpses into the actual series to see how they connect with the series as a whole.

I'd been waiting for this since the tease in Deacon's bonus epilogue! It's a adorable, feel good short story, I got it for free via Prolific giveaway & read it in 2hrs!

Kieran is the owner/bartender at Pirate's Booty where our Condors frequent. He's cool & friendly with a "superpower"—to know what drink someone NEEDS.
Jonathan is the new Head Coach of Condors. He's observant & confident (😏). And, the only one K's superpower doesn't work on!

It's fun to see their meet, the many texts, & flirty friendship! K's (not so) "hopeless" crush on J, I adored his patience. Jon's Bi-awakening was well written, newness & worry but receptive. Their willingness to work through challenges is sweet. J+K's hottttt, K's a good teacher 🥵. That epilogue, worth it 😂🥰.

Read this if you like this series. Glimpse into hardworking K+J's romantic sides!

Story ratings: Enjoyed—> 5/5

No clue where my original review went but I loved this originally freebie novella which gave us all the background to the big reveal at the end of Deac and Grant's book.

Sweet, funny, steamy, as I'd expect from Beth and a lovely trip back to the Condors world.

This was the novella I know I wanted, but as I was reading, I didn't really know I NEEDED it until I was reading.

I have been curious about Kieran since I first started the Condors series, and Coach Kelly, well he was a bit of an enigma.

And together, they are just everything I hoped they would be. Jon's biwakening, Kieran's patience, you just that it was building up to love.

I enjoyed seeing players from Coach's POV, how he trusted Kieran, and how Kieran was that ear to bend that he needed.

If you have read the Condors series, you can not miss this novella.

I enjoyed this novella set in the world of professional football. The author didn’t make up a football league name and location. They called it the NFL and it was set in Charleston, SC, which I thought was interesting. The football aspect does not overwhelm the romance, even though an MC is the new head coach. There are football anxieties and players are introduced in scenes.

This was a fun and happy romance between the coach, Jon, who is straight and bar owner, Kieran, who is not.
Nice chemistry, a deepening relationship with questions of coming out, and some well written hot sex made this a good read.

I haven't read any of the Charleston Condors books yet, so all the characters are new to me (except for Jem, because I read and loved his story in Silent Knight ).
Jon is the new coach of the Condors and his life changes the night he enters the Pirate's Booty, the bar his players can't stop talking about. He has an instant connection with the bartender and owner, Kieran and from that night on, they become fast and close friends.

Jon feels very at ease with Kieran, but his feelings are not strictly in the friendship zone: in fact, for the first time in his life, Jon is attracted to a man.
I really really liked how Kieran never pushed Jon for more, but always allowed him to set the pace of their relationship and I also liked how Jon was always honest and open with his boyfriend.

What prevented me from giving a higher rate:
I would have loved to see more romantic moment between them.

I really liked this story and all the side characters who have their own stories in this series; I hope I'll be able to read them soon (especially Carter's).

I received an ARC of this book from Neon Rainbow and this is my honest review.

Kieran and Jon’s story is here! I loved the surprise for these two at the end of the last book. Now we get to see exactly how that went down. And no surprise by how good it was! Kieran has always been an interesting character. Thar bartender for the Condors at their favorite bar and he has a superpower of knowing exactly the drink you should be ordering. But when Kieran meets Jon, he is stumped. His normal gut feeling isn’t there but what he does feel for Jon is a lot different. And after a few months of talking and getting to know one another and thinking that Jon is straight, turns out he may not be. Jon being the new head coach of the Condors comes with its own challenges. What he doesn’t expect though is to start having feelings for Kieran. And soon he realizes that he can’t hold it in anymore. He needs to explore what could happen between them. And it was great! Absolutely adored these two. Such a fun story!

Cute Romance x

I love Beth Bolden's ability to create relatable characters and engaging storylines. I've been looking forward to this story since reading the end of her last book, when Kieran and John reveal that they're together. The pair of them are instantly likable, witty, with their shared chemistry oozing from the page. There's a perfect balance of lighthearted humor and heartfelt moments, making this a truly enjoyable read. Their texting at the beginning of the story is cute, and eventually brings them together as lovers. It's a real feel-good romance that left me smiling. I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of the audible version. Darcy Stark does a great job in representing the guys, he captures them, their developing relationship, and their emotions beautifully

Perfect, adorable story, fit for the length of a novella! I was very curious about who Jon hinted at dating toward the end of The Play, and I'm glad we got this quick, cute bi-awakening from it. Cheers to the Condors series!

4.5 - Audiobook by Darcy Stark

This is fun and spicy novella about Jon, the new head coach for The Charleston Condors, and Kieran, bartender & owner of The Pirate's Booty, the local bar and unofficial hangout for the Condors. Kieran is known for having a superpower that enables him to know exactly what someone *needs* to drink (as opposed to what they may want). However, Jon walks into The Pirate's Booty, Kieran's superpower fails him! After they meet and start chatting, Jon becomes comfortable enough with Kieran that they begin a friendship that is on the flirty. Jon is straight - or so he thinks, but over time and after exchanging some fun texts, do things change?

I'd say so! Jon starts to feel *things* for Kieran & he is all in with his bi-awakening! Their spicy times are spicy & their sweet times are oh so sweet. I love the mix of friendly chats, sexy times, and loving moments - usually novellas don't hit all these points well, but this one does.

Darcy Stark does a fab job of voicing the characters - Kieran has a lovely Charleston drawl, the female voice is actually well done, and Jon sounds hot. I felt the emotions these characters were experiencing & I think the narrator did a great job with that. I had more than a few happy tears during the last part of the story (during the epilogue yes, but also before).

I have read all the Condors book and was so happy to get to revisit them and to finally hear Coach Jon's/Kieran's story, which was hinted at in Deacon's bonus epilogue! Frankly, I think I need to go reread all the books right now because I just love all these boys.

What to Expect:

* football
* Charleston setting
* football coach MC + bartender/bar owner MC
* bi-awakening
* first times
* intro to the Condors/cameos
* low angst

Thanks to Neon Rainbow Reviews for the audio ARC - this is my honest review.

Well this was a lot of fun! In Summer Catch by Beth Bolden the newly hired Charleston Condors coach Jonathan walks into a bar…
Not just any bar, The Pirate’s Booty, his players favorite. It’s owned by the charismatic Kieran, who’s superpower is knowing the exact drink you need.
Except for the first time every, Kieran is at a loss.
He’s instantly attracted. But Jon is straight. So they begin a flirty friendship via text.
These are two busy men with conflicting schedules. But somehow, through texts and off peak work visits, they make it work. You can see/feel/hear as they fall for each other. Kieran’s hopeless crush might not be so one-sided, and Jon might not be as straight as he thought.
I loved how their friendship developed and how they became each other’s biggest supporter. Kieran and Jon work on so many levels. Sometimes finding your soulmate takes you to unexpected places, but is exactly what you need.
The narrator, Darcy Stark, was new to me, and I enjoyed his honey-voiced Kieran, all southern charm and patience as he let Jon figure things out. And Jon. Not only was he taking over a team in disarray and trying to change it’s culture, he’s experiencing his own bi-awakening.
Beth creates these wonderful inter-connected worlds and I loved seeing past couples show up!
I do need to go back and read the book in the series I missed. Summer Catch stands alone nicely, but I’m intrigued (a/k/a nosy) and want to get the whole story.
A sexy little story with two attractive MCs, lots of football, and great communication. This is a quick read/listen and a whole lot of fun. ****1/2 stars!

I received a free copy of the novella. This review is submitted voluntarily.

Kieran owns the Pirate’s Booty, a successful bar. One night, he spots Jonathan, the new Head Coach of the Charleston Condors. He’s been hired by the new owner to rebuild the team that has been rather scandal ridden. Kieran has a “superpower” that allows him to determine what a customer should drink, not necessarily what they want to drink, but it fails him with Jonathan. He also discovers that Jonathan calls himself straight. After exchanging phone numbers so that Kieran can call him before the police if his players cause problems at the bar, they start texting. Eventually, Jonathan asks Kieran about when he discovered his sexuality. From there, Jonathan discovers that he is not straight, opening the door for the steam. In due course they arrive at their happy ending.

This book has little to no angst, which makes sense given the short length of the story. The plot goes along very directly, though I found the time lapse between chapters a tad confusing. The main characters are both very sympathetic. Jonathan’s voyage into his sexuality is quick but enjoyable. There are few secondary characters, but they make substantial contributions to plot development.

I can recommend this book to lovers of MM romance.

The Condors' head coach gets his HEA with a hot bartender!

When Jon walks into the Pirate's Booty, all he's looking for is a drink and the reassurance of the bar's owner that he'll call Jon if any of his rowdy NFL players get up to no good. What he finds instead is a friendship with the enigmatic owner, Kieran. But that friendship quickly begins to stir feelings and desires in Jon that he's never felt for another man. Afterall, he's in his early 30s, he'd know if he wasn't totally straight, right?

I really enjoyed this quick novella, which can be read as a standalone but is best enjoyed if you're familiar with the Condors already. It was wonderful to see Jon discover himself and his feelings for Kieran. Both Jon and Kieran are great guys whose personalities compliment each other very well. Their relationship isn't easy due to their demanding schedules and Jon's need to stay under the radar during the football season. Kieran was really patient with him, and it was nice to see that Jon wasn't just trying to keep himself and Kieran locked in the closet. He was proud of his man and he had understandable reasons for wanting to keep things quiet for a while.

I've been a fan of Beth Bolden for a while and this novella is no different. Summer is almost over, so I highly recommend squeezing in one last steamy summer romance before settling in for fall.

I loved the Charleston Condors series, so when I saw that my favorite bartender was getting his own novella I was really excited! Kieran and Jon's journey was such a sweet and entertaining read, and Darcy Stack did a fantastic job bringing these characters to life via audio. Because I already knew and loved the two main characters, it was easy for me to get invested in their relationship, and I thought it was really cool to see the highlights of the football season through the coach's perspective. Kieran and Jon had sizzling chemistry from the very start, and while Jon was new to being attracted to a man, he was very relaxed and open-minded about his feelings for Kieran. The two of them fell into an easy companionship that translated into delightfully steamy explorations, and not once did either man get anxious or angsty about where their relationship was headed. The public scrutiny of Jon's job forced Kieran and Jon to keep their romance on the DL, but their feelings for one another only grew stronger and deeper with time. I thought this novella had the perfect balance of friendship banter, football, and romance, and I especially love that it didn't end until Jon and Kieran went public with their relationship and surprised all the Condors players.

I was so excited to get Jon and Kieran's story, after their reveal in The Play. Light and novel length, this was the perfect epilogue to one of the best series I've ever read. I enjoyed seeing a few scenes from the previous books through Coach Kelly's eyes. I appreciate that Beth gave us a bit of fan service without spending too much time on events that we already experienced. It was just the right amount of getting Jon's perspective without feeling like I was rereading the series.

What I love about this is how once Jon is sure of what he wants, he isn't afraid to go for it and has no hang ups on discovering he's not as straight as he believed. They communicate openly and honestly with each other, and I love them for that! I also appreciated that Kieran was so understanding about Jon's desire to not make a big statement right away. He understands the pressure Jon's under and doesn't add to it. Jon in turn makes sure Kieran knows he doesn't plan to hide their relationship forever, and it feels so natural and healthy for them both.

Audiobook: I really love the way Darcy Stark narrates, bringing the characters to life with unique voices and powerful emotions. He is also one of the most consistent narrators I've listened to in terms of character voices over a series, and that's a huge deal to me.

SUMMER CATCH is A Charleston Condors novella. It can be read as a stand alone but reads so much better if you have read the rest of the series.

Kieran is the owner of the Pirates Booty, a very popular bar that a bunch of the Condors hang out at. Kieran is an excellent bartender. His superpower is knowing instantly what any patron should be drinking and he's never wrong. When Jonathan Kelley the new head coach of the Condors comes in Kieran's mind goes blank and he can't understand why his superpowers aren't working. Jonathan sees that Kieran is interested but lets Kieran know he's straight. Kieran is disappointed but when they start texting almost daily they develop a close friendship when that crosses into the flirting more often than not. Jonathan doesn't know why he's so drawn to Kieran but he wants to see where it could go between them and Kieran is more than willing.

I loved Kieran throughout this series. He's been in every couples book and I am so happy he's finally getting his HEA. I loved how Jon and Kieran's relationship develops so organically from friends to lovers. My only complaint is that their story isn't longer.

I was given a free copy of this book to read and review for Neon Rainbow.

Audiobook August 29-30, 2024

When Jonathan arrives to coach the Condors out of a terrible management situation, he has his work cut out for him.

He meets Kieran when he comes to the bar to ask if Kieran will keep an eye out for the players, and immediately something strikes him.

Kieran is also interested, but his drink superpower is nowhere in sight, and his gaydar seems off when Jon says he’s straight.

But that doesn’t prevent them from hanging out with each other, becoming friends, and eventually realizing they are interested in a romance.

They keep things under the radar until the end of the season, but share in the stresses of the team and getting through to the playoffs.

A fun novella where Kieran gets his story and Jon gets the man he never knew he wanted.

The audiobook adds a layer of lightness to the story, makes the development of the relationship seem more gradual, which I really liked.

I received this ARC for free and am glad to give it my honest review in thanks.

SUMMER CATCH - BETH BOLDEN

If you are a fan of Beth Bolden’s Charleston Condors series, this novella is a must read for you. All of the characters you know and love from the series appear throughout this story, and you will enjoy reading them all once again.

This book concentrates on the new coach for the team, Jonathan Kelley, and how he learns to love not only his new location, but, Kieran, the bartender and owner of the Pirate’s Booty where the Condor’s go to let off steam.

Kieran has appeared in the other books in the series, and it’s always fun to see what his “superpower” tells him about what everyone should be drinking, but he discovers he can never get an exact feeling on what Jonathan should have, which leads to some great texts and banter between the two of them.

The story ended too soon for me because I love all of these characters so much, and it is definitely a great addition to the series. Beth Bolden is a wonderful writer and you will enjoy this like all of her other books!

I have not read the Charleston Condors' series so all the characters were new to me, but this did not put me off reading this story. What it has done, is for me to rectify this mistake as soon as I can and read this series.
Kieran is the owner of the Pirate's Booty a local bar. It is just an ordinary day when Jon the Condor's coach walks in for a drink. What follows is a lot of texting back and forth and what started out as friendship soon turned into more.
I read this story in one setting and I loved the back and forth of the texting between them and you could see their relationship blossom right there on the page. I liked that whilst Kieran did not show much interest in football Jon respected Kieran's opinion when he used him as a sounding board. How Kieran was patient with Jon, letting him do everything at his pace and just making time for each other. They were so sweet and hot together.
This was a good read and as I said has peaked my interest in the players themselves

Coach Jonathan (Jon) Kelley is not only the new young coach of the Charleston Condors. He's not only learning a new team culture but things about himself that he's never known before.
Running into the sexy owner/ bartender/ drink magician of the Pirates Booty. Is Kieran going to stir up more than his famous drinks just for Coach Kelly?
Kieran McDonald is stumped for the first time, his superpowers failing him when he lays eyes on Jonathan Kelley for the first time . He's blank on a drink for Jon Kelley. Kieran decides to flirt with him. Jon quickly tells Kieran Im straight!
They soon become friends. Texting, sharing day to day life . Jonathan realizes that as they grow closer, he may not actually know the real him.
Hangon for the ride. Jonathan and Kieran are so sweet together but hot enough to explode. Can two men really find love? Will Kierans' super power ever work with Coach Kelley?

What was a surprise revelation in the bonus scene of The Play (4th book in the Condors series) has become a full story. I couldn't be happier.

I wouldn’t define this as a simple “Condor-adjacent” story, since Coach Kelley and Kieran are essential supporting characters in the entire series about the team. It is a novella and can even be read as a standalone, as the events of the main books are only mentioned as part of Coach's confidences to Kieran during their text exchanges and evening conversations.

These two just clicked from the start, first as friends, then as lovers. Coach's bi-awakening is smooth and their relationship doesn't hit any bumps.

Overall, a sweet, heartwarming story of two men falling in love on their own terms and at their own pace, without outside interference, and a great addition to the series.

When your superpower of knowing just which drink everyone needs fails you, it may not be a bad thing. It might just be because they are the one!

This is a fun flirty short story between Kieran, our favourite bartender and owner of the Pirates Booty and Jon, the new coach of the Condors. The friendship they develop is profound, and the relationship they build is strong and beautifully supportive. All mixed in with some delicious steam.

The audiobook is narrated by Darcy Stark, and he does and excellent job with it. He really brings the story alive and captures the characters and tone of the story perfectly.

Having listened to and read Summer Catch, I would say I enjoyed both versions, and am glad to have read/listened to it given that I've read the other books in the Charleston Condors world that Beth Bolden has so lovingly and thoughtfully created. That said, if I hadn't read the full length novels, I would probably feel a bit disappointed with this novella. It does a lot of time skipping, as in there is often a week or two that has passed between the end of one chapter and the start of another. As a result, the story feels a bit more like it's skimming the surface. It does fill in gaps and compliments the other novels, so it's worth reading alongside the others. Regarding the voice acting, I found the southern accent somewhat put on (it didn't feel fully organic) but I liked the pacing of the reading overall.

Jon & Kieran (an audio review)

I loved this novella and I thought the audio was great. Darcy Stark is a wonderful narrator and he provided a strong performance as he always does.

These are two men who come from two very different worlds. Kieran is Charleston strong running a popular bar with a crazy crew who are just a pile of fun. Jon is the new head coach for the Charleston Condor football team. A huge promotion in his world with the massive weight of expectations on him.

Jon and Kieran find a way to begin an illicit relationship where Jon isn’t ready to come out at work – for now. Kieran understands the stress that Jon’s under and is so supportive. Especially when Jon takes a huge risk. Will it pay off?

I’m super excited to see more books from Beth headed this way and I hope to get more glimpses of this great couple.

We finally get Jon and Kieran’s story and it was so worth the wait! Kieran has been such an intriguing mystery and I’m so happy he got his story! I loved watching him make his special drinks for everyone and it was really interesting that he couldn’t get a read on Jon’s drink! Although he was definitely getting some other vibes from him! Jon has a lot on his plate being the new coach and getting the team squared away the way he wants. Now he’s got other things going on that he has to work through and he’s definitely a go getter! I loved watching these two get to know each other. They were absolutely adorable! This was a quick but very enjoyable story that I highly recommend! This is my honest opinion of this complimentary copy of this book

Finally after all of the books about the Condors and their season, we get to read about Kieran the owner of the Pirate’s Booty Bar favoured by the Condor players. He has a superpower to know what people should be drinking, not what they ask for. Enter a stunning man whom this doesn’t work on and when he is recognised as the new Condor coach Jon, Kieran is hooked.

Jon is straight but maybe not so much as his texting with Kieran keeps getting flirter and more. Eventually the attraction to too much and they collide into a relationship that no-one knows about except Kieran’s staff. A whole season goes by and then at a function they walk in hand in hand. Everyone is shocked but happy for them.

The perfect finale to the series.

"I’m definitely cobalt for you.”

This is a standalone book in the Charleston Condors universe. The author, Beth Bolden, is a 'new to me' author. I know many of you probably can't believe that since they have written so many books, what can I say... I'm late to the game.

This was probably a good book for me to dip my toes into the Beth Bolden world. The bartender and the straight, maybe not so straight, NFL head football coach... what's not to love about that?!? I definitely need one of those mermaid drinks. Now that I've met some of the guys in the series, I'll probably go back and read or listen to the 4 books in the series.

Beth has given us a sweet story between Kieran and Jonathan. Kieran is the owner of the Pirates Booty. He has this incredible knack of knowing what someone should be drinking. When he meets Jonathan his “superpower” is awol. Jonathan claims he’s straight when Kieran flirts with him. They embark on a friendship that includes a lot of texting. Both men find that the enjoy each other’s company and Jonathan realizes that he’s attracted to Kieran. They both want to be together so slowly they do exactly that. They work together to have the thing they want the most. That’s someone to be there for them and love them for who they are. This story has all the feels and ties all the other books together with a big red bow.

I enjoyed Summer Catch; it was sweet and flirty at first and became hot and steamy once Coach Jon Kelley realized he wasn’t as straight as he once though. Jon throws Kieran for a loop when he his “super power” of knowing just what drink one of his bar patrons needs before they do doesn’t work when Jon walks through the doors of the Pirate’s Booty.

As this was a novella it wasn’t as in depth as Ms. Bolden normally writes and I while I enjoyed it; I’m greedy and would have loved getting to know both Jon and Kieran on a deeper level.
It was easy to see from the start they had a connection and their friendly texts grew more flirty as Jon realized he felt something for the charismatic bar owner.

I very much enjoyed seeing both these men find their special someone.
