Nancy Hendrickson is a non-fiction author who writes about diverse industries for books, magazines and the web. Nancy has recently turned her writing talents to fiction, and is currently working on a cozy mystery as well as an historical time-travel novel. Nancy lives in San Diego, California and is available to give talks on all facets of non-fiction writing.
When not writing, you can find Nancy somewhere in the frontier west - delving into the people and events of a bygone era, all while listening to the tales spun by the resident ghosts. Nancy is the one with the Canon DSLR, the little Canon Elph and the digital recorder!
As per usual, Mrs. Hendrickson has knocked another one out of the ballpark. I never tire of reading her books, and I always walk away having learned something new and valuable that I can use in my own writing. I think most writers hit writer's block at one point or other; I know I do. This book is full of different strategies one can use to get past whatever barrier is preventing him/her from getting his/her thoughts down on paper. Once again, I am amazed at Nancy's ability to take a difficult subject and make it not only easy to understand but provide helpful tips for her fellow writers!
I was watching a video that featured the author. She mentioned how when she was young she had always wanted to be an archaeologist. When she realized how much digging and dirt was involved she came to realize that being an archaeologist is about discovery, and in fiction writing that is exactly what we do. I also wanted to be an archaeologist and I had never really made this connection, i had a self- realization and it brought me to tears. I bought the book and I'm glad I did. I do not think I will ever have writers block again. I came to realize how important images are to my discovery process. I have a bunch of pinterest boards for my fiction world, a collection of art that resonates with me. What is interesting is that I might not understand the picture until I have other pieces in place and suddenly a whole string of pieces come together, just by looking at an image! It is a short but invaluable book. There are lots of great tips to come back to as well. A nice easy read with great advice to get rid of writers block forever.
Really useful info and some amazing ideas to help you write better creative scenes. I didn't realise I was already doing this a little bit. Worth a read if you're struggling to find your spark!
This book had a different title when I read it. It was The Visual Writer: How to Use Images To Spark Your Creativity. :)
Nancy is so inspiring! Yet again, she packs so much useful info into her writing. I can see myself using this one as a reference as well. Thank you Nancy.
