Prepare yourself for another spot-on mystery with Sheriff Savage and company. I am really getting to like Rosalie. She may be bad but she is so good at it. The Sheriff's humanity shines through and we can clearly feel his pain. Highly Recommended.
Dust Devil by Biba Pearce is book 6 in the Dalton Savage series. The reservoir has dried up and given up its secrets. Discovered on the body is a scrap of leather with the Crimson Angels Motorcycle Gang on it. The enquiries made of the Gang bring tight lipped denials of knowing who it is. At the same time forest fires are creeping closer with the possibility of evacuations. Set in Hawk’s Landing in Colorado, it is a series I enjoy even though I am a predominantly a UK crime reader. There is a new addition to the team. Lucas McBride is an ex-Marine and is shaping up to be a great fit for the team. Dalton is having trouble adjusting to his new situation at home and is throwing himself into his work. A fast-paced story with plenty going on. The characters are interesting and likeable from Sheriff Dalton to Rosalie Western, the head of the Motorcycle Gang. Great descriptions of the bone-dry lands and the bushfire. A few questions were raised at the end, which made you question what you believed about justice.
The discovery of a body buried in a dry lakebed leads back to the Crimson Angels and their activities of the past, when Rosalie’s former husband Axle was leader of this pack. Sheriff Dalton Savage faces a dilemma, it is his job to eliminate all known criminality, but he is aware that to do so will create a vacuum, one that will be filled by ruthless criminals from one of the major cities. Is it better to deal with ‘the devil you know’ if the crimes are at the lower end of the offending scale? Daton’s grappling with his conscience over this, and other matters, throughout the story gives him form and substance. He’s a Sheriff with a lot on his mind and on his plate, which makes him an interesting character.
The story motors along nicely, switching lanes between the usual gang crimes of drugs and prostitution, to those that can involve seeming legitimate businesses. The parochial nature of such locations, where power resides with only a few individuals, can leave them vulnerable to corruption. There are murders, danger and some great confrontation scenes for the thriller fan. Add to this twists and surprises and most readers will find something to enjoy.
The storyline examines the nature of loyalty, the sense of being trapped in a position with no obvious way out and the desire to escape and start afresh. Biker gangs, like organised crime, value loyalty more than anything else, leaving is never an option, unless the members can be divided. People in bad situations often need to do bad things to escape. Surprisingly, in this case love is the key motivator.
Dalton Savage is a well-drawn protagonist; he is estranged from his family but is driven a sense of justice and a desire to do what is right. He desperately wants to reunite with his family; this desire is demonstrated by his protection of single mum Honey. She is caught up in all the mayhem, but he becomes determined to keep them safe, mindful of how criminals have forced his family apart. These actions mean he faces yet another moral dilemma, policing here can never be black and white, but Dalton must live the consequences of each decision that strays into the grey.
L T Ryan and Biba Pearce are a formidable writing team and if I could give this book more than five stars, I would . Dalton Savage's life isn't an easy one, he is torn between being a good husband and being the good sheriff that Hawks Landing needs. Left alone without his beloved wife and son, to fight injustice, Dalton is questioning his decision. Everything seemed to happen at once, wildfire raged through the county, threatening lives, homes and businesses, the exhausted firefighters were working round the clock to contain the fires and people needed to be evacuated. To add to Dalton's headache, the remains of a body were found in a dried out lake, the body of someone who had been executed, the body that proved to be that of Axle Weston, the ruthless president of the much feared Crimson Angels MC. Axle had been missing for three years and his wife, the beautiful but formidable Rosalie, had taken his place as president. Rosalie was as ruthless as Axel but much more savvy at running the club, she commanded respect from the members and she and Dalton had a begrudging respect for one another. The body count starts to rise, who is picking off the bikers ? could Dalton and Rosalie really work together to find out, could they really fight the establishment with it's powerful members ? This is a brilliant story, the tension and suspense are high, the characters are so well rounded and likeable, even the sassy, cool, leader of the Crimson Angels and corrupt ex cop Zeb with his trailer girls are growing on me. I love the author's descriptive powers, I could practically feel the heat, smell the smoke and see the red skies, I could feel Dalton's loneliness and yearning for Becca and Connor. This book can be read as a standalone but if you have never read any of the series, give yourselves a treat, you won't regret it. I received a free copy of this book and my review is totally voluntary
Justice served but with a surprise ending! A fantastic storyline that keeps your interest to the very end with all the twists and turns that quickly draws you in, but constantly sending you up the wrong avenues. It all starts with Hawks Landing when Sheriff Dalton Savage that Savage is called to the dried up reservoir were the receding waters reveal a pile of human bones. It soon becomes apparent from evidence and forensics, that the body a biker who was associated to the Crimson Angles and was executed maybe three years prior. Following the clues Savage and his deputies slowly follow the evidence with the Crimson Angles dangerous self proclaimed president Rosalie Western firmly top of the list of possibilities. As more developments start unfolding, more and more unanswered questions rise up with tensions that rise with the heat. With the long ongoing hot summer and the sun-baked forest, fires start to spread. Dalton and his team are then called to assist with wild ragging fires and evacuating residents, all making life very difficult to get to the bottom of it all. As more killings start occurring and as they finally seem to be getting some answers Dalton forms an unlikely allegiance with Biker gang boss Rosaline to bring down the suspected killer. But can the newly elected Sheriff who is also battling with his own marriage problems and wife who has moved out with his son still uncover the truth and catch the killer? Like in the previous books, you keep on reading and there are plenty of twists and turns sending you down the wrong avenue. But in the end Dalton serves justice; well in partially anyway, but it also ends with a surprised ending! “A very enjoyable read!”
The State of Colorado, including Hawks Landing, is currently in the middle of a terrible drought; everything is dried up including a nearby lake, and a ridge fire is raging, threatening to continue down towards neighborhoods. Sheriff Dalton Savage actually already had enough on his plate since he is dealing with Becca recently leaving him with their son, Connor. Things only get worse from here for Sheriff Dalton. While he is trying to deal with his personal disaster and the fire, bones are found at the bottom of the dried up lake and are found to belong to a long-missing member of the local biker club. At the same time, the notorious former leader of the biker gang escapes from jail threatening the life of the current gang leader. Just when Sheriff Dalton is trying to put together all the clues and physical evidence and determine a suspect, another biker is found murdered. With this second murder, trouble starts brewing between the local politicians and the biker gang and the DEA is called in to harrass the biker gang. At the same time, the U.S. Marshals are hanging around looking for the escaped prisoner. All this insanity occurs on Sheriff Dalton’s watch at the same time, all while he’s worrying about Becca and Connor. There is nothing like these stories, which, like all other stories by this author, continually twist the reader in all directions; you never know where you are going around the next turn. I read this in one setting since I couldn’t put it down. After the very interesting ending, I am looking forward to where we go next.
Newly re-elected Sheriff Dalton Savage has more than his share of troubles. With a relentless drought parching the land, wildfires threatening the outskirts of town, and a marriage on the brink, the last thing he needs is a murder case. But when a body surfaces in the cracked bed of a dried-up lake, everything changes.
The remains belong to a former member of a notorious local motorcycle club—one Savage has clashed with before. As he and his department dig into the case, the murder quickly proves more than just a cold-case curiosity—it’s a powder keg. When another biker turns up dead, the puzzle pieces refuse to fall into place, and the deeper Savage digs, the murkier the truth becomes.
With mounting pressure from every direction and tensions in town rising, Savage must walk a razor-thin line between justice and survival.
Another gripping thriller from Ryan and Pearce, this story grabs you from page one and never lets go. Packed with sharp twists, layered characters, and a burning sense of urgency, it’s a must-read for fans of gritty, fast-paced crime fiction.
I received an advance review copy (ARC) & I am leaving this voluntary, honest review.
Dust Devil is the latest in the Dalton Savage series, and does not disappoint.
There's as usual no shortage of drama and suspense and action on multiple fronts.
The entire state is suffering through a drought, wildfires are raging just outside Hawk's Landing & threaten the safety of the entire town, and if that wasn't enough to have to worry about a dead body is found and soon identified as a member of the local biker gang, who hadn't been seen in at least 3 years.
On a more personal note, Dalton is alone, his wife Becca having left him and taken their young son with her, not feeling like it's a safe environment for either of them to be in, given recent events.
Despite this being a work of fiction, the situations and characters seem so real it draws you in and makes you care, and worry and wonder just how will they get out of it this time, and at what cost? Definitely recommend reading.
Things never happen one at a time. While Sheriff Dalton Savage is trying to get to grips with being on his own again since his wife decided that she needed to leave and take their son to a safer place after their recent scare when they were abducted, Hawks landing is suffering from a drought and wildfire threatens. As if this weren't enough, the body of one of the Crimson Angels, clearly murdered, has just turned up in a dried up lake. And then, Axle, the former leader of the Angels is broken out of prison and is gunning for Dalton who put him inside and Rosalie, his ex wife who is now the leader of the Crimson Angels. A page turner, lots of action and a few unexpected twists.
Loved this story full of suspense following Sheriff Dalton Savage when a body is found in a dried up lake from years ago, Dalton tries to solve the murder while fighting for his marriage.
As he starts to investigate the more secrets are revealed which puts him in danger and tensions rise in the town.
This is a roller coaster story which keeps you wanting to read more.
Would highly recommend.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
As a newly re-elected sheriff, Dalton Savage has new assignments. Then the three year old corpse of Diesel Vaughn is discovered. Diesel was a member of the notorious biker group, Crimson Angels whose leader, Axle is in prison and whose ex-wife, Rosalie has now taken over. Dalton has many questions but can Rosalie provide the answers? Then Axle escapes from prison and all hell breaks loose especially when his corpse is found. A well crafted plot with unexpected twists and jaw dropping suspense. The book is riveting and had me glued.
From cover to cover, this book offers compelling storytelling with nuanced character development. The narrative doesn't rely on sensationalism or graphic violence, but instead focuses on authentic character growth. The protagonist's journey in law enforcement feels genuine and represents a professional dedicated to integrity. The evolving dynamics within the police force create an intriguing backdrop, leaving readers eager to discover how the new team member will integrate and contribute to the existing group's dynamic.
I have read all of Bibi Pearce’s books and have enjoyed every one. This was no exception. The protagonist is very believable and very human. I shared his frustration and pain as uncovered the murderer I hope in subsequent books he gets his wife and child back. I recommend this book to anyone who wants an easy to read mystery taking place in Colorado.
Well this is the 12th book I have read from L.T. Ryan and wasn't disappointed (and I am sure not the last one either). Started a little slower than I expected but I got over it and indulged myself into the characters. Always a good solid story line that flows effortlessly throughout. The ending did shock me some though. Wasn't expecting the conclusion I got which surprisingly makes sense of the overall conclusion.
So, another cracking crime story for Sheriff Dalton and the team. It’s a very intriguing one to be sure. I loved it, as I have the rest of the series. There are many complicating things that are confusing the team, which makes the story all the more riveting. I wonder what will we get next time, cannot wait. Highly recommended.
A very well-written book with wonderfully-interesting characters. Interesting, pulse-pounding plot that kept me thoroughly engaged throughout. Enjoyed every minute of it!
*I received a complimentary ARC of this book in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.
Once again, LT Ryan has hit it out of the park with this dalton, Savage novel. An easy read a page turner, all of the above. An excellent story it hit me as usual and these day and time that people would think just this is dad just justice some times it’s not subconscious just life.
Murder and corruption in Hawk's Landing, and Dalton Savage has his hands full trying to solve three murders. I highly recommend this book! There are many twists and turns and surprises that will keep you wanting to see what happens next. Happy reading! ☺️
I love this Dalton Savage series. Dalton is a complex character with real life struggles. Murder mayhem and well written characters make this a great read.
A body is found, the past leader of the local biker gang breaks out of prison. Things go from bad to worse for Dalton as he tried to piece it all together.
Dalton had one hell of a mess . 3 dead suspects Rosalie and club . Then the wildfires. He ended with getting Becket for money laundering. Figured out in end Honey killed Axle. Left with Rosalie as a suspect in Walt death no evidence. Couldn't arrest Honey and rob Ben of his Mom. 10 stars plus!!!!! Thanks Carl Clause
I feel like this series is just about to end, but not quite yet. Something else is going to happen in Knotts Landing and I’m sure Dalton will solve it. Book six was just as good as the five before it. I will start book 7 tomorrow if it’s out and if not I’ll have to wait. So with that I’ll say ENJOY!
I found this to be an interesting and gripping murder investigation for Savage. It's full of drama and intrigue, set against a backdrop of an American wildfire. I'm new to this series and still getting to know the characters.
The story was phenomenal! Lots of twists and turns, right to the end. What I didn't like was the last page. Hmm! And the follow-up isn't out til May of next year!
I'm amazed that these authors can write so many fantastic novels, I hope that they never stops writing. Their books are some of the best Entertainment I have read and worth the time to read them. Thank you for a very fun entertaining read.
Although Dalton Savage is an interesting and intriguing character this storyline, albeit interesting, was somewhat boring and disjointed... Too much trivial banter not enough substance!
Dalton Savage continues as sheriff, but without his wife and child at home. He has a case with several dead bodies and 2 other cases that tie into that case. You don't want to miss out on reading this book and series. It has kept my interest.
Another excellent Dalton Savage story. A massage fire hits the land around d Hawks Landing. Dalton and his team have other, battles to face. Murders of bikers and money laundering, disapperances. So much happening in this small town.
This is a new development for The Boy Scout in this later series story.
I like the character development and l look forward to the last story in the series. I think the wise man in Dalton is troubled, but understands and is trying to deal with this new journey he's on.
