King Raymond is betrothed to Princess Ada of a neighboring sphere in an arranged match not of his choosing. Travelers from a parallel world have bargained to save the future of his people and he cannot refuse their offer.

Raymond does not believe that an alliance with the Savages would result in a life-altering experience. He soon finds himself overwhelmed when an entanglement of emotion and love conspire to undermine his vow in the most unlikely place.

Rowenna, warrior female of the Band, is a much sought-after female select. When her kin agree to an offer that will unite the races of their future, they do not realize what the sacrifice will cost her.

In this novella we get to hang out with Clara's mom Rowenna and see her story. It's one of heartache, love and it is all so bittersweet.
Love was an errant master, unjust to the finest detail, forcing its will against all odds, against all reason.
The heart always won.

Rowenna is Band and select. She has chosen her mate, but she has also been chosen by the Travelers for their genetic games. Her and Prince Raymond of the sphere are to come together to create an offspring that will save their future. No pressure or anything, right? The kicker, Rowenna doesn't get to raise the child, and traveling through the pathway will shorten Raymond's life. It seems no one is to have a HEA. If you have been following Tamara's Savage series you know how this story ends. However, I recommend reading this book. Not only because it is awesome, but because it is packed full of surprises.

It's amazing to me that Tamara can go back and forth between this writing style and the writing style she uses in her contemp work (like Death, and Blood) so effortlessly. I love the steampunk feel to the Savage series. It has been awhile since I have been in this world so I had to acclimate to the speech, but I did so quickly. The story draws us in. It really does.

Prince/King Raymond is everything we are led to believe he is. He is clearly a very amazing man. Clara was lucky to have him, even if it was for a short while. He is so tender with Rowenna. He treats her with respect despite the fact that they have had the weight of their world put on their shoulders.
..."you will come to me without inhibition, of your own desire. If it take one month or six, it will be of your choosing Rowenna."

Rowenna was not always Big Warrior Amazon woman. She really had to work her way to that position. She faced a lot of adversary.

Ada, she still makes me want to vomit. She is so evil. It's equal parts awesomely evil and oh my gawsh how can someone suck so badly.

We meet new characters in this book and they are only here briefly, but they make such a huge impact that they will be remembered.
This novella is amazing. It's under 30k but I finished it with a satisfied feeling. It felt complete and whole. Sometimes shorter works leave me wanting more, but not Principle.

This is most definitely a great addition to this series. I cannot wait to dive back into this world with all this new information when Protector comes out in April.

Rowenna is a warrior even though she is female. She has many men vying for her attention but she has chosen a Band warrior for her mate. Then the travelers arrive, telling Rowenna’s clan that she has been chosen to mate with the future King, Raymond, from the spheres and that Rowenna must bear a child or the travelers won’t save their world.

Soon to be King, Raymond has been promised to Princess Ada from a neighboring sphere but once the travelers arrive they set in motion a series of events that will change their world forever. After explaining to the ailing King that the travelers won’t help save his people unless Raymond creates a child with a SAVAGE, Raymond is told to sacrifice his health and longevity by portal travel to create a genetically enhanced child.

The sphere dwellers and the Band have not seen each other in years, rumors and stories abound. Can these two worlds come together? Who are these travelers and have they really come to save them? Will Rowenna and Raymond sacrifice their lives and hearts? You’ll have to check out The Savage Principle and find out.

The Savage Principal is a novella prequel that takes place before THE PEARL SAVAGE. It gives a fantastic perspective of what took place before it all began. I loved the passion and vitality of both Raymond and Rowenna and applaud them for the choices they make. Tamara Rose Blodgett pulls you in with dialog that is written with an old world charm, then she wraps you up in a bright and eloquently describe alternate universe and makes you believe your there.

This copy of The Savage Principle was given to me by the author in exchange for a honest review.

I enjoyed this story. It's more of a prequel than a third book in a series, since it deals with Clara's parents and her birth, but I liked learning more about her past - some parts were surprising. I might read the fourth book in the series, if it goes to a cheaper price, but it's not top on my list.

Imagine another world where the inhabitants must live in spheres, linked by passages because they have been told the outside air is poisonous. These people have, for the most part, gone rather soft, dressing in the style of the 19th century. Yet, beings who have 'evolved' with gills roam outside the walls in Bands. They are strong, fierce and protective of their kind, particularly the females. Toss in 'the Travelers,' mysterious humans who have played 'God' with these peoples, bringing in the Fragment, criminals from their world, who wreak havoc wherever they go.

Rowenna, a select female must mate with a sphere-dweller, Raymond, soon to be the King of the Kingdom of Ohio. Their union has been prophesied. It must happen, for the future of their world. The prophesy also states that the child will be raised by Raymond and his future wife, Ada, a shrewish and vain princess from another sphere.

These two must accept their fate, but their meetings are not what either of them expected. Rowenna, although young and scared finds that Raymond is a man of honor. Raymond finds Rowenna to be all he could want in a woman.

Tamara Rose Blodgett has painted a world where you feel the air around you, feel the emotions of the characters, their devotion to duty. The villainous characters carry a dark, evil presence about them. I became so wrapped up in the story, I actually hated one character even more than in previous books, these characters are THAT real! Their lives become real! Their world is real! This author can write, putting more imagination into this work than many books twice its size!!

I do suggest you read the series in order to appreciate what happens in book 3!

What a fabulous read. After reading The Savage Principle I understood why it's #3 & not a prequel as I thought it should've been. If you were to read it first, it would kinda blow the secret(s) for the reader.
I'm so glad we got to see how Clara came into existence. I love King Raymond & how honorable he is. Clara is so much like him. :) Rowenna was my favorite character in this story. For one so young, her heart is so big!! When she became a mother, how fiercely she loved her child, Clara. That was powerful. It was an awesome read!! I love you, Tamara!! Thank you!! ♥

I bought the first three of this series in a box set. This is one of those series about real men who love an protect their women. Tamara Rose Blodgett has a way of describing scenery that helps one actually see it. She introduces her detailed characters and draws you into their lives. It wasn't always an easy read due to some of the content. I can say that there were many times, I found myself figuring out ways to do away with some of the more evil characters and looking forward to seeing how she handled it. I truly enjoyed the adventure and had to buy the next one in the series.

Very good series, but.....ues there is a but....there are so many characters and some with similar names, I could not keep up with who was who, especially with the computer generated narration. So I guess I will just have to read them again. Or find the next 4 books in the series.

The Savage Principle is full of secrets! Well, two very huge secrets! I was very excited to learn more about Rowenna, since she's a unique character in this series. I wasn't surprised that she caught the attention of multiple men in her clan, and that the women didn't like her. But I was very surprised about...well, I can't really say! This whole novella is like one giant spoiler! I really cannot believe that Rowenna didn't mention any of this, or even hint at it, to Clara when they met and had their mother-daughter heart-to-hearts. I suppose it's really not something that should become common knowledge, but she's just so calm, cool, and collected and never slipped!

The Savage Principle also shows us a young King Raymond and Queen Ada. Ada was just as awful as a teenager! I had kind of assumed that she started drinking in excess and being vicious after their marriage, and maybe after Clara was born, but nope. She is truly awful! We also learn a bit more about this prophecy that Clara is suppose to be a part of, but I don't think it was enough. It seems like a lot of people know about it, and yet not a lot of people know about The Travelers. Which leaves me wondering who told who about the prophecy?

“PRINCIPLE is Rowenna & King Raymond's story of the arranged conception of Clara, the child that will save the lives of both Outsider's and Sphere Dwellers alike.

What a heart wrenching story it was. To be 16 and put in such a position with the survival of the world as you know it, on your shoulders. Forced to conceive a child with a total stranger, when you are betrothed to another, and in love with yet another; poor Rowenna get's the shortest straw there is!
My heart ached throughout. What a savage world the Outsider's truly live in!

What I loved most about PRINCIPLE, was that TRB had me back in that world within mere sentences and it was a pleasure to be back there. I never had to wrack my brain to be back in a moment or scene. I loved getting answers to questions I had and getting the backstory to a character that has stuck with me. I think it is also great that it has been made book 3 as it will help new readers to understand the Savage world a little better.

I cried, I laughed, my stomach was in knots, I cheered & fist pumped! The intrigue by itself had me enthralled.

I think the circumstances of Clara's conception are going to give us some juicy plots in the SAVAGE books still to come, and I for one can not wait!!!

Surprisingly awesome!

I had my doubts because reading a prequel is not a pleasant experience with other sagas, but this one is just as good as the "present story" of Savage Saga. Kristin Cashore should learn from Tamara Rose Blodgett. :)

I just finished this book, so I'm still sad about Harland... very sad.

The only "BUT" I find in this book is the cover. Really, I think the girl should have been super blonde.

However, BRAVO!

I purchased this as an ebook from Amazon.

What an amazing read not at all what expected. An eye opener of a prequel to The Pearl Savage informing us of the life of King Raymond and Rowenna lives and how Clara's birth came to be.

The storyline was quite shocking things are not as they seemed. The story was written well and kept me interested throughout I couldn't put it down. Looking forward to reading the fourth book in the series The Savage Vengeance. Highly Recommend.

This is a novella in this series. While it is the story of Rowenna & Roland (Clara's parents) it is best read as book 3 in this series. So it's not really a prequel. If you read it first you will have a lot more questions than answers. Very good story, and now I have to get book 4. I want to know what happens next!! Does Clara finally choose Matthew? Will Evelyn finally notice Maddoc's feelings for her? What's up with the Travelers??

Very good read

This was a great book of a Prince that needed to bed a Savage girl to have a baby that would end the world's conflicts. However he did find out that she was suppose to marry another, and was in love with another half blood. Wow, the twist in this book make it a joy to read and to find out how strong her courage is and how respected she is. You will also have a great fondness for the Prince.

Science fiction, romance, dystopian, with a bit of steampunk, "The Savage Principle" is book three in the series, but it goes back to tell the story of Cara's parents. Shorter than the other two, but a great backstory. It explains more about the Guardians and leaves a few more mysteries. You should read the others first. I give it three stars. I liked it. I can recommend for ages 17 and up due to some adult content.

I'm a little disappointed - this is NOT a continuation, but rather a prequel. And IMO, a hastily put together prequel. If you haven't read the other books, then there are comments/conversations that will have you lost.....I don't know. I would have preferred to wait for a book that was a continuation of Clara and Matthew's story rather than an incomplete story about Clara's parents. :(

I won't even pretend that the Savage and Death series are hard-to-put down page turners...but I'm a sucker for a quick read and interesting characters.

That said, I'm reading these using my Nook while I exercise. No thinking needed, and I'm still tied up in a decent story.

I just wonder where she's taking it all.

What an Explosive read!!! I have followed this series from the beginning and each book has just got better and better, with this book being the best in the series so far. Tamara Rose Blodgett has already tickled our fancy by naming the next in this amazing Savage Series which I cannot wait for!!!!!

The Savage Principle by Tamara Rose Blodgett

This one is a nice little origin story for Rowena. It was comfortingly predictable, but doesn't feel like it adds much to the series. It will be interesting to see how this changes the Travelers' plan for the key.

*I dropped a star for editing, but I suppose it is going to be standard for this series.

Aha ... so things are not as they seemed!!! Now I have answers to some questions but more questions.

The main one being why is Clara so tiny???

I will say no more as I don't want like spoilers but I hope the final next book in the series gives me an answer to this.

I actually thought the writing style of the one improved vastly on the first two books. Interesting backstory, more twists in the bigger plot that I didn't see coming. I really do care about these characters and want to know what happens next!

This was a very fast read- I really liked that we got some back story by both King Raymond and Rowenna. It was nice to be away from all the drama of Clara and "WHO will she pick" drama!!!
I also got a bit more insight in the Travelers and the fragment!!!
Makes you really HATE Queen Ada~!!!!

I really enjoyed these books! I think Ms. Blodgett is quite talented! Fun steampunk themes in the very far future. I am reading the prequels about the time travelers..but it will take a looooong time!

Hmmmm

Well, that was an interesting twist. When will Rosanna spill and how will Clara take it, that is a good question. The other questions are what does this do for the future and are they guardian or evil scientists?
