Hello! I’m Catarina Hansson, a Swedish author, teacher and editor, and a lifelong collector of stories.

I have always been fascinated by the old stories of Scandinavia—the gods, legends, folklore and mysterious creatures that have survived for centuries. I love wondering what might happen if those stories stepped out of the past and into the lives of young people today.

That is the kind of fantasy I enjoy writing: adventure with a touch of humour, magic rooted in history, and characters who are brave without necessarily feeling brave. I want my books to entertain, but also to spark curiosity about the stories, places and traditions that inspired them.

I spent many years working as a teacher, and that experience has shaped the way I write for children. I know that young readers can be wonderfully demanding—they will forgive a lot, but never a boring story! I try to give them characters to care about, mysteries to solve, things to laugh at and just enough danger to make them turn the next page.

I am the author of The Ella Trilogy, a three-book fantasy series inspired by Norse mythology, Scandinavian folklore and the world of the Viking Age. I have also published Brake! and Tiger Tracks in English, together with the Swedish editions Bromsa! and Tigerspår. In addition, I have written numerous educational books in Swedish.
My books have been published in Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

I still find inspiration in the forests, landscapes and old traditions of southern Sweden. There is something wonderfully exciting about walking through an ancient forest and wondering which stories might be hiding there.

Perhaps that is why I keep writing them. I hope you enjoy discovering them too!

As Grandma begins skating, she realizes she has no idea where the brake is. In the chaos, she grabs onto Bella the cow’s tail and suddenly goes zooming across the meadows! What happens next? You’ll have to read the story to find out.

The author’s storytelling is engaging, the illustrations are beautiful, and overall, it’s a thoroughly enjoyable read.
