So the hero kidnaps the heroine, but it's not as bad as it sounds. He's not really a bad guy. In fact, he's a very nice guy and had a good reason for what he did. During her captivity they fall in love and join forces to resolve a serious issue in their country, Nigeria. By the way, I thoroughly enjoyed the cultural details.

The hero and heroine were opposites. She was a somewhat spoiled, rich, party girl. He was selfmade, quiet and reserved but knew how to handle her in the bedroom. ;) He was also loyal and devoted, which was sexy. An all around good story!

The way I devoured this book needs to be studied. I genuinely could not put it down.

I’m typing this review at 5am and I am not exaggerating when I say the ONLY reason this book is not five stars is because of me. I desperately wanted it to be a forbidden romance. I wanted it so bad. The potential was right there, staring me in the face.

The characters were written with so much softness and emotional depth that it simply could not be that book. Instead, Yusuf’s story ended up being the real forbidden love, and that? At what cost?? I didn’t even care one bit about him and his story BUT I still don’t know why I wanted this to be dark romance so badly, but yeah…the problem was me lol.

Now, was this book well written? Hell yes. I want to scream from the top of a building and tell everyone to go and read it. It’s genuinely beautiful. I expected Nosa to be harsh and emotionally closed off, but he surprised me. He was soft and tough at the same time, which is such a hard balance to pull off. He’s smart, emotionally grounded, and ridiculously attractive. Guys, he’s also sexy as hell. He had control I loved in the spicy scenes, I can’t even lie! Why is this book not dark romance fgs 😔

Rita is one of those FMCs you can’t help but love. There is not a single dumb bone in her body. She’s sharp, confident, and speaks with so much authority. I loved every moment of her presence on the page.

This was a beautiful, fast-paced read, and honestly, take me back to the moment I read the first sentence. I want to experience it all over again.

The Senator’s Daughter by Amaka Azie was a book that caught my attention and kept it up to the last page. I read the book in one day. You cannot help but sympathize with Nosa and his grief and need for justice. Someone close to him has died as a result of greed and they were above the law. So he decides to get justice his own way. It was well planned out. He stalks Rita for weeks looking for a blip in her security. Rita is the daughter of Senator Obaseki. She appears spoiled and without a plan for life. Watching their relationship develop during her kidnapping was endearing. I loved both Nosa and Rita. They mystery was suspenseful in that I kept thinking Nosa would get caught. You figure out who the villain is but there is still suspense until the end.

The book was interesting form the perspective of the Nigerian politics and justice system. Part of me wonders how much of this happens in the US and is just not as visible.
I truly enjoyed this story and would recommend. It was my first book about a couple from Nigeria and I was totally engrossed in their story.
Sexual content – 3 there are physical scenes with some detail
Violence – minor, nothing disturbing
Language. I didn’t notice any bad language so if there was any it was not overdone or vulgar

Let me start by saying I really enjoyed this story! A perfect kidnap plan goes all wrong when the victim turns out to be the kidnappers perfect mate. The characters were likable, empathetic and well-rounded.

The Senator's Daughter takes very real issues in Nigerian/West African society and politics and weaves them neatly into this tale of love, loyalty, suspense and intrigue. The romance between Nosa and Rita starts slowly and builds up to a satisfying and sensual peak.

I was pleasantly surprised by the villain's motive and rooted for him to get redemption. There were a couple of other surprises that you'll enjoy. As an African, I found the characters and setting wonderfully authentic.

Highly recommended

2021 Review of the Audible Audiobook: To me, the overall experience of this audiobook was 3.5 stars. I had previously read this book a couple of years ago so I already knew I loved it. In fact, I think I enjoyed it more this second time in audio. When it came out in audio and the author offered me a chance to review it, I was happy to revisit it and see how I felt about it, especially in audio, given that there isn’t a lot of Nigerian romance available in this format. This exciting romance is as I remember- it has shades of social justice, mental health, Nigeria’s queer-phobic culture, and political intrigue wrapped around an opposite’s attract romance about “poor little rich girl” heroine with heart, and a solid, silent type hero with a strong sense of justice.

I found that this romance translated very well to audio. It felt action-packed and exciting and I think the narrator did a good job carrying the story along. I listened in 1.3x speed and found it compelling. However, the performance fell apart for me in the actual match between the narrator and the story she was reading. The issue is that this story is set in Nigeria, using Nigerian names, Nigerian patterns of speech and so, to me, as a Nigerian person who grew up in Nigeria, the way things were said, names were pronounced, was distractingly incorrect. I think the narrator was alright overall and brought the story to life in a way that made me sympathize more with Rita than I did in my first reading of this, but to Nigerian ears, it was an awkward match between the narration and the characters. There’s NO WAY that’s what these characters sound like. And I think more than anything, this amplifies the challenge that many indie (and non-indie) authors especially of black romance or African romance face when trying to get their books in audio. There is definitely a gap in the availability of Black, African and diaspora voices working in global audio narration. I do love that despite this struggle, this author went the extra mile to make her book more accessible and available in audio. I don’t think that the issues with authenticity that I personally had, would signify to anyone who’s not Nigerian or who isn’t familiar with how names are pronounced and the way Nigerian-glish sentences are said with phrasing. I think only Nigerians will notice the things that aren’t said quite right. And whilst distracting, it didn’t distract from the fact that this is still a fabulous story. For that reason, I still highly recommend this audiobook because it makes a gorgeous African romance accessible AND the narration is fine, if not exactly authentic (for understandable reasons).

Many thanks to the author for the complimentary review copy!

2019 Original Review: I'm new to this Nigerian romance writer which is lucky for me because it means I have the privilege of having her backlist to explore. Featuring a corrupt senator's spoiled daughter and a strict ex-Army hero out for revenge against him, this romantic suspense novel set in Abuja in Nigeria is realistic, relevant, contemporary and just really entertaining.

Admittedly, this started a little slowly for me with quite a bit of stage setting where I would have preferred a start with a more action-packed bang. But a few chapters in, once hero and heroine meet, its really interesting from then on out.

This is a really compelling, well thought out romance filled with family intrigue with important themes of mental health, corruption and even sexuality. Whilst this may not be ground-breaking in the world of romance, for a romance set it Nigeria, this is shaking tables brilliant and I loved it. I like that the author created solid, well-rounded characters that weren't just tropes of "poor little rich girl" and "taciturn soldier." The characters had unexpected depth to them and solidly emotional back stories that explained who they were as people and made them 3-dimensional. The author did such a great job wity character development that I wish a little more had been done with some of the side characters like the stepmother, the father, brothers etc (e.g. exploring Rita's character dynamics with them a bit or having them play more of a role as barriers or supporters). But even without that, this was a strong, stellar romance and I can't wait to read more from the author.

I happened upon this book by chance and I am so glad that I did. This was a good book and exciting to read. What a mystery for the female lead to stumble upon and find love along the way. It's a story of second chances, starting over, and accepting who you are. Quite the steamy love story.

I was excited to receive this e-book, along with three others by the author. I should have read them sooner, but I guess I was just being a bit lazy.

The story follows Rita Obaseki, the privileged daughter of a billionaire senator. She is portrayed as a spoiled young woman with no ambition and a troubled past. Rita often showcases her extravagant lifestyle through vlogs she shares on social media. On the other side, we have Nosa Edosa, an ex-soldier who lost the love of his life, Isoken, due to the sinister actions of Senator Obaseki, Rita's father. Two years later, after exhausting all legal options to hold the senator accountable with no success, Nosa, along with his friends Phillip (Isoken's brother) and Femi, plans to kidnap Rita as an act of revenge for Isoken and others who have suffered similar fates. However, what was intended to be a straightforward operation unfolds into a beautiful love story.

Where do I begin? 😂 Yusuf! Chineke! 🙆‍♀️😂 I didn't see that twist coming. I suspected he was up to no good, but what I read was far beyond my expectations. My irritation was so evident that my sister had to ask, "What happened?"

Nosa and Rita—oh my! 🥹 Their chemistry is undeniable, and their love story is both sweet and humorous. 😂 When I first read the blurb, I expected a tale focused heavily on politics and the like, but the story goes beyond that. Rita is strong, brave, and intelligent.

This story taught me to appreciate my humble beginnings. Many of the wealthy individuals we envy desire a simpler life, as evident from Rita's conversations with Nosa and his friends, as well as Yusuf's reflections on missing his uncomplicated life back in Kano.

As I often say, Ms. Amaka Azie’s books are grounded in reality. This story is not solely about romance; it also addresses real-life issues. In this book, she explores themes such as love, politics, the impact of counterfeit drugs, grief, and corruption within the legal system. Overall, it is a beautiful story, and I highly recommend it.

Rating: 4.5 ⭐ (putting 5 here because I can't put 4.5).

~The Senator’s Daughter by Amaka Azie📚📚~
On getting the book, reading the blurb, it automatically felt like my kind of read. I finished reading in less than 2days and I didn’t want it to end, honestly🥹. Personally, I’m Nosa’s fan and I love him a little too much🤭. I felt his grief, and struggles in trying to get justice for Isoken and the country at large. I loved the way he planned out his execution, well planned and it wasn’t rushed.

And then we have Rita, the only daughter of Senator Obaseki, who Nosa is trying to kidnap to gain the senator’s audience and to also bring him to justice. All these was quite successful except bringing the senator to justice. In the midst of all these, strings got attached, Nosa and Rita became a lovely “thing”. I love love, and I love how Nosa loved Rita, it was so evident in his dealings with her.

I’m a lover of plot twist and Amaka Azie gave me more than I expected!! The twist was definitely on a 💯! Everyone would accept that the Senator was behind all the atrocities and he was Nosa’s target but trust me when I say you would never see it coming, I was wowed😯

This book explores the theme of family, love, Nigeria Political system, injustice, and abuse of power. The language used in this book is a very simple one, the story was well articulated and I truly and thoroughly enjoyed my read! If you’re looking for a second chance kind of read, a sprinkle of romance with some deep suspense in your read, this is your best best!📚

If you enjoy romance that feels grounded in real life but still gives you all the swoons, The Senator’s Daughter is one you shouldn’t miss.

This story follows a woman born into political power, who wants nothing more than to live on her own terms. She’s bold, opinionated, and ready to fight for her independence in a society, and family that constantly tries to silence her. Then comes Nosa, a man who isn’t part of her world but sees and respects her in a way no one else does. Their connection is instant but complicated, and the journey they take together is full of tension, heart, and a little rebellion.

This book was such an easy read. The writing flowed effortlessly, and even with the strong themes around family pressure, social class, and self-identity, it never felt too heavy. I genuinely loved how Amaka Azie balanced romance with real-life Nigerian realities.

And Nosa? I need more men like him in fiction. He was respectful, grounded, and so secure in himself. There’s something incredibly attractive about a man who supports a strong woman without trying to control her. Their dynamic gave me butterflies.

If you’re looking for a Nigerian romance that’s soft, smart, and full of heart, with a fictional man that’ll stay on your mind, this is one to add to your list.

I loved how Amaka seamlessly incorporated both Nigerian language and English, making the dialogue rich and authentic. This is my first time reading a book of this theme and I got instantly glued to the book from the first chapter......Rita's character is wonderfully strong, independent, smart and beautiful, I love how amaka azie didn't let her family issue and the circumstances define her.
Nosa who is an ex militant, the perfect mix of a protective yet gentle figure and also Rita's sort of kidnapper was such a sweetheart. I enjoyed every moment of them together and every page made me laugh, but one of my favourite line from the book was when Nosa and Rita were making love and Rita enjoying nosa junior, Nosa shouted "RITA OHHHHHH" God I laughed so hard. I wish I had annotated more quotes like that because this book is full of memorable lines that made me giggle and made my imagination run wild.
I can't forget Philip the ladies man and Yusuf who also deserves love, but he did had to pay for his crime.

The only reason this is getting three stars is because it was actually interesting enough to keep me reading till the end. Otherwise, a lot of events in the novel just seemed ridiculous to me. Especially the whole kidnapping scenario. I know Stockholm Syndrome exists but whatever transpired between Nosa and Rita was just way too fast to be considered that. He was literally eating lunch with her, telling her his full name and where he's from on the second day💀
Even if he wasn't planning to hurt her, what about her made him trust her enough, and that fast too, to know she wouldn't get the police looking for him after the whole ordeal???
The amount of ridiculous decisions they made too. Like why exactly did they mention Isoken's name in the video they sent😭
Who does that?!!!
I had a lot of expectations for this and this definitely wasn't it.
At least, the author's writing style is actually good.

I also wished Yusuf had his own story and yes despite what he has done,he never wanted this lavish lifestyle but unfortunately Audu died, well it is what it is. I hope both that stupid senator and Yusuf get what they deserve for what they did to isoken even Yusuf never wanted any of this.

3.5 Stars.

I'm not so much interested in romance, but this book crafted a storyline that complimented depth, with so many themes, like corruption, mental health, homosexuality and grief to mention a few, and seamlessly intertwined it with love.

We see so much beautiful charachter development from the main charachters, blossoming into the fullest versions of themselves while their respective worlds' opposing in nature, apply the upmost pressure in magnetizing their determined destinys'.

A great read, would most definitely reccomend.

Who knew a kidnapping could lead to one of the most unexpected love stories I've read in a while? Hmm😅🤭 ...The Senator's Daughter follows Rita, the stylish, outspoken daughter of a powerful senator, who gets kidnapped by Nosa, a man driven by pain and a need for vengeance. But what starts off as a tense, dangerous situation slowly unravels into something deeper and more emotional.

Rita is way more than the rich-girl stereotype people expect. She's bold, vulnerable, and surprisingly grounded.
And Nosa, though hardened by life, turns out to have a soft side buried beneath all that anger.

There's love, drama, revenge, healing and a sprinkle of politics and family mess to keep things juicy. If you like romance with a bit of edge, you'll fly through this one just like I did😅 I give this book a rating of 3.5 stars.
