Oh mannnn! That last page was spicy!! And not because of the romance necessarily, but because that look Gaku gave! Wow!!
Rewinding, though, this was such a fun volume! I LOVED seeing Hibari be brave when it came to the art festival! Gaku wasn’t the most encouraging, I feel, but seeing her eventually take his words to heart and step out of her comfort zone left me smiling!
Honestly, even seeing Gaku “struggle” at one point was really good! Like Hibari, it reminded me he isn’t perfect, which I mean, it is obvious, I guess in how unhinged he is. LOL! But what I mean is that he gets embarrassed just like everyone else and has his own struggles, even if they are vastly different from Hibari's. LOL!
I am shipping Airi and Jo SO hard and NEED the creator to give them more spotlight as she did in this volume! Pleassseeeeee!! I’m invested in Hibari and Gaku, but there is a fun sweetness to watching Airi and Jo that I absolutely love!
The art festival itself was very great, and I deeply enjoyed everything that unfolded! I had a lot of fun reading and can’t wait to read the next volume! Hopefully, there will be even more romance because I’m with Gaku; they didn’t spend nearly enough time together! 🤭
A manga does not have to be flashy to be practically perfect. There is nothing this does that is exceptional, per se, but it rides a wave of excellence straight on to the climax, which ends on a solid cliffhanger.
Okay, I lied, that moment with the guitar pick at the end is amazing from start to finish and quietly illustrates how Hibari is learning to have a little more confidence and not play it quite so safe. Ironically, the circumstances of that decision will likely have consequences.
Still, it’s the closest thing to a Mark Manga Moment (tm) that I’ve seen in a while and makes for a fantastic beat to wrap up the volume on. It’s the icing on an already well-frosted cake.
Backing up a bit, this festival arc has been great; possibly one of my favourite ones ever. For one thing, it’s a university so there isn’t a haunted house or maid cafe in sight. I love my high school stories, but the young adult of this is a real breath of fresh air.
I mean, they bring back that giant penis (well, the implication of it, this is a shojo manga as the book helpfully reminds us) and then basically double down on that joke in a way that makes sense yet also got a good bark out of me at how audacious it is.
Not to mention how immature the whole thing is - this gets the university vibe of unbridled creativity and lack of maybe considering if something is a good idea that I remember from my time on campus.
I appreciate the universality, and they thankfully don’t dwell on the gay bar. Not that gay bars are bad, it’s just that this particular interpretation is a little too stereotyped and gay panic-y. It feels like something from an earlier era, which is more or less confirmed in the notes.
Minus that odd misstep, the festival largely exists to show Hibari continuing to not think much of herself and Gaku showing her that she should really give herself more credit. Plus some very enjoyable couple moments, naturally.
Which doesn’t seem like much, but as we often see, shojo tend to give up just when the relationship starts, as if there’s no drama after. That works for your idealized story, but people keep feeling one another out long past the starting line.
There are a bunch of neat little moments where both Gaku and Hibari are trying to resist the feelings that are swirling through them and just can’t and they’re some of the best parts of this volume. I love that this has shown that relationships are both surprising and take work.
Speaking of taking work, we also follow along with Hibari’s friend, Airi, and her burgeoning crush on Joichiro, one of Gaku’s bandmates. This does not run nearly as smooth as the main couple, let’s put it that way.
For whatever reason, it looks very much like Joichiro is aware of Airi’s crush and not quite brushing her off, but not really acknowledging her feelings either. Based on the dialogue, I’d say he’s scared, but it causes friction for everybody either way.
And I like that this isn’t some perfect couple who get it all right - they’re still guarded with one another (okay, Hibari is) and trying to see how they relate. The physical and emotional attraction is real, but that doesn’t make it easy. Where do your obligations lie between what the two of you want? It feels very believable.
Naturally, that’s when rival boy shows up, but he’s mercifully minimalized this time. Although he certainly causes the most problems with his brief time on the pages. It’s exactly enough to season an already good dish.
Just such strong writing from start to finish. Both leads are likeable as heck and are different enough that their friction is believable. Hibari is the one who really needs to stop playing it safe, but Gaku’s impulsive behaviour doesn’t always work out the way he wants. Fleshed out, yet imperfect, makes this such a unique and satisfying series.
4.5 stars - minor knock because I do think the gay stuff is handled surprisingly insensitively, especially when the rest is so, so good. Still loved the volume and I am happy to round it up because of how well realized it is.
Help me. Kann die Reihe aber weiterhin sehr empfehlen!
i loved this volume so much. the school festival was amazing and brought so many good moments between our lovebirds and the (hopefully soon) side couple. i genuinely was blushing and freaking out so much during this volume. gaku looked so much like jay from enhypen in chapter 15, he was extra cool there. everyone looked extra cool and pretty in general though. i’m obsessed with keiko iwashita’s artstyle. the friendship content and the storyline about hibari becoming more confident were so cute as well. the only thing that killed me was the end of the volume and the fact that there’s no new chapter out yet. i already feared that something like that would happen, but i hope that it’ll get resolved well.

Okay yeah no I totally get hibari being scared dating gaku bc the fans are so frustrating the way they got so mean saying “yikes” like leave her alone shes so pretty :(( and the way rihito hugged her so no one would take a photo and call her out on social media is so sweet of him but ofc gaku is jealous but honestly gaku should have known how hibari felt in this situation bc his the popular among his band group. He wouldn’t understand hibari’s situation bc its not like his in her shoes

Equal parts hilarious and romance! Well at least the beginning stages of romance for these characters. Airi is so adorable and I'm rooting for her! Rihito pops up and is so mysterious it's actually annoying. Like I previously mentioned, the love triangle doesn't work well because there isn't very many chapters given to his character and the main couple is already established. Am I still gonna read these? Yes, but mainly for our homegirl Airi.
