The past can enslave you, or set you free...

When Max O'Donnell moves into a peaceful English village to get to know his son, Cat Cartwright's sixth sense tells her there is trouble ahead. As the profane, irritable New Yorker is gradually accepted into the community, Cat has no choice but to watch the strengthening bond between father and son, knowing Max is not all he seems to be.

Cat's free-spirited ways, so misunderstood by those around her, prove strangely alluring to Max as she guides him through the minefield of fatherhood. But the gross deception that has tortured him since 9/11 could well be his undoing, jeopardising the happiness of everyone he cares about.

Meanwhile, Cat is still recovering from her own losses, and has to decide whether she can finally accept her tragic past and move on with her life, even if it means sacrificing the man she loves for the sake of her own sanity.

The Cloud Seeker is novel of ghosts, love and cloud-watching, set against the backdrop of the English Chiltern Hills.

What a fantastic story. The characters are well drawn and very complex. The hero is by turn likeable and so messed up that I almost want to hate him. I rode that roller coaster right along with the heroine. Their relationship was definitely rocky and there was one point where I wasn't sure they would reconcile.

The story unfolds with beautiful symmetry, revealing each character's history with well-paced precision, at a tempo which--while not fast--nevertheless kept me turning pages. To the point that I was reading it exclusively, when I usually have one book going on each of my two devices.

The Cloud Seeker deals with some messed up experiences and people who are damaged by them. I don't want to give much away, but the author fearlessly deals with the aftereffects of one character surviving one of the most notorious events in recent history, and she does it with aplomb. The truth, when it comes out, has been built up so well that I thought "Of course that's what it was!" but I hadn't quite put it together myself.

The only quibble--and it is a very minor quibble--is that the characters from the US occasionally have speech mannerisms that are, in my opinion, not very American. But I was only aware of this on the periphery. It slipped me to the edge of 'the bubble' every so often, but not really enough to pop it for me. I could almost believe it was east coast vs my west coast colloquialisms.

Read the Cloud Seeker. You won't be sorry.

In a small village in rural Buckinghamshire, Cat Cartwright lives a dysfunctional yet content life. The author takes that life and spins it out of control, leaving the reader wondering what will transpire next.
With well-developed, intriguing characters, delicately drawn landscapes, and a twisted plot, Cloud Seeker is a highly enjoyable story of people facing up to hidden truths and confronting their own self-made inner demons.

This is a great read from a very accomplished author. Highly recommended.

Two people struggling to overcome incredibly painful pasts, a horribly complex extended family-like network complete with vulnerable child and evil mum, with a dash of the mystic. Great read, good characters and a nicely twisty plot. Recommended

Lovely writing style and set locally to me which was a nice surprise.

I really liked Cat's quirky style and Luca, the character interactions, landscape (and cloudscape) and attention to detail.

Not so keen on the way terminal illness was used, the representation of Rachel as nothing but a sad disabled person who gives up on her husband and life. As a person disabled with a chronic illness I struggled emotionally after reading this. I'd like to see more positive and balanced reflections of life with disability in books. Far too many like this.

I can't believe this book has such good reviews. This was recommended to me as it was based in Buckinghamshire. I found it to be a bit 'Mills and Boon' - there was no 'twist' as I think you can work out what is happening. Read in 2 evenings so not challenging.
