Houses always come as the direct expression of their inhabitants, whose personalities and lives are reflected in the layout. Prince Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg was an extraordinary man who knew how to exploit the opportunities of a time of dramatic change so as to become one of the most powerful statesmen of his day. Schloss Eggenberg was intended as a power house that also expressed the new social status of the family. From the first, editor Barbara Kaiser planned a book with stimulating, interesting texts for a broad public of visitors, heritage enthusiasts and non-historians, so as to bring this complex intellectual building to life. The volume is the first to endeavour to bring together such extensive information about the building, its interior and gardens and park, the clients and the artists involved. The sources were widely scattered and sometimes very difficult to locate. The written material about the most important historic great house in Styria is illustrated by splendid pictures.
