Sweet & Stocky #2

Bears & Bakeries

Rate this book
A cozy cooking romance with low angst and high heat.

Locky Sorenson would bake every day if he could. There was just something magical about it. In the sight of the tidy copper measuring spoons. In the soft swish of flour through a silver sieve. In the alluring scent of freshly whipped buttercream or gooey chocolate chip cookies.

Of course, he'd never be a real baker. That was just a dream. And 30-something accountants didn't get to live their dreams. Or so he thought.

When Locky unexpectedly loses his job, he decides to put his whole redundancy payout towards a wild business a night-time bakery. A decadent midnight escape for those who like their cakes thick and their buns sticky.

To help him succeed, he hires the supportive but scatter-brained project manager, Benedict Harris. While it all starts professionally, they quickly discover that cupcakes aren't the only thing rising in their kitchen. And that the metal bench-top makes an excellent surface to really pound out the dough.

Now they have to decide just how deep they want to go together. Will they biscuit all for love? Or will they decide the whisk is just too great?

Bears & Bakeries is a sweet and spicy romance about chunky men - as tasty and indulgent as a cream filled donut.

Well, that was something...
Unfortunately, I can't give an official rating, as I'm too conflicted and I'm sure the book doesn't deserve to be influenced too much by my negative thoughts.
In any case, it's a very well-written book, and I like the author's style.
Unfortunately, I don't like the way the story is told, but that's a me problem.
Anyway, if you like your hurt-comfort romance dipped in cum and dripping, then this could be a good book for you, and of course you should also like the main characters to be of the bearish type, big, strong and hairy.
I like all of that, but unfortunately not in this mixture.
To explain, the romance and the backstories of the main characters are wonderful and are one thing. And then there are the sex scenes. Yes, I think the two can go well together, but I don't feel the chemistry. It doesn't really work for me. The sex scenes are very pornographic and I think this story could use more sensitivity.
I don't know, I probably can't find the right words, which is why I'm not rating it overall. If I were to rate it: 4 stars for the pornographic sex scenes, 3 stars for the plot, 3 stars for the writing style. 0 stars for the transition from a hurt-comfort narrative to a cautious romance to intense sex.

Benedict grunted hard across Locky’s tongue as the first jet of cum splashed between their bodies and across their chins. The sheer force of the shots took Locky by surprise, but he jerked the man’s cock even faster, causing bolt after bolt of salty warmth to blast across their cheeks and beards and up onto their lips, the shots somehow growing in volume and force.
Benedict held Locky’s head in place as he kissed him with an outstretched tongue, leaving hot air between their lips. Suddenly, one of the cum jets smacked against the underside of their tongues.
That taste of boiling cum—primal and filthy and so long forgotten—sent Locky over the edge.

Dnf 88% no rating.

While the first installment was awesome, I enjoyed some aspects of this book even more than the first book. This book had more depth. Locky and Benedict struggled with mental health issues, both were beautifully drawn complex characters.

So why no rating?
I know I'm vanilla, and as someone on the ace spectrum I don't really GET animalistic passion and violent sex. Yet I liked and even loved books where the MCs were violent during sex (Ari Baran's Goaltender Interference for example is stunning).
I don't really understand why I struggled so much with the MCs having sex in this story. To me their personalities outside of sex and their personalities during sex clashed immensely, and I wasn't able to enjoy the sex scenes at all, even knowing they were consenting adults.

No rating feels right, so I'll not rate this one.

🎂ARC REVIEW🎂
This book was seriously cute and sweet, even when dealing with hard themes. Locky and Benedict are very supportive of each other and they inspire the other to do better and it's quite a healing journey for both of them. The cosy background, with all the baking, and the supportive cast of characters was also a plus. It also has super hot intimacy, with a bit of soft D/s in their dynamic. I loved it and it made me happy, leaving a warm fuzzy feeling once I finished reading.

Who hasn't gotten a boner while hugging a hot guy?

A sweet and spicy romance with a lot of heart with some relatable *ahem* situations and dialogue.

Locky and Benedict are adorable and become each other's biggest supporters in their journey through this book. A baker with a dom side sizzling underneath his anxious exterior? A consultant with some hidden piercings and some other specials skills? Sign me up!

I loved the chosen family cast of characters we get along with a solid guest appearance from Luca + Artair. (From the first book in this series).

If you're looking for a silly goofy, feel good time, def pick this up!

AD-PR PRODUCT

A hot and spicy MM romance with body positivity and heartwarming vibes! ☺️

It was wonderful to be back in the Sweet and Stocky series, and this time with two bears in a bakery. I found the connection between Locky and Benedict to be deep and I loved the progression of their characters.

The buns weren’t the only thing frosted in this read as it was as creamy as a profiterole, spicy as gingerbread and sticky as an iced bun. I was so here for this and thought these spicy scenes were written well. Locky definitely loved taking control of both the bakery and the other buns! 🤭

What I loved about this book was the vulnerability of the protagonists. Both had difficulties and hidden struggles and I love how they united together and supported each other through them. They really were perfect together, like cinnamon and buns!

I found some of the secondary characters a little annoying and a few chapters were quite lengthy, however, I raced through this book as it was so easy to read.

Drakes has a clever knack for weaving spice, heartfelt and fleshed out characters and a wonderful storyline to make a lovely read. I can’t wait to continue the rest of the Sweet and Stocky series!

A huge thank you to @thedylandrakes for this ARC of Bears and Bakeries which publishes today! 🥳

You knead (🤭) to check out this book!

I had the privilege of reading an ARC of Bears & Bakeries, and it was such a sweet, spicy, and heartfelt story. I absolutely adored Benedict and Locky—their connection was sicky sweet in the best way, but their story also had so much more depth. Sometimes, it really does take the right person to help you face your fears, and this book captured that perfectly.

What I love most about Dylan Drakes’ writing is how he crafts characters who feel real, relatable, and deserving of love just as they are. His stories are brimming with body positivity and self-acceptance, which is such a breath of fresh air. Bendict and Locky’s journey was not just about love but also about self-discovery, growth, and healing—making their romance all the more meaningful.

For those who loved Cubs & Campfires, you’re going to love Bears & Bakeries just as much. It’s tender, it’s hot, and it’s filled with all the heartwarming moments you could want. As always, be sure to check your content warnings, as this book does touch on some heavier topics—but trust me, it’s worth the read. Dylan Drakes continues to deliver stories that make you feel, and Bears & Bakeries is a perfect example of that.

This is such a cute and cozy read! Dylan Drakes does an amazing job at bringing these characters to life and making them relatable. I love the relationship between Locky and Benedict, its adorable. I love how they can lean on one another and talk about their fears openly with one another, it's so heartfelt. I loved watching them grow together through out the book.
But let me tell you, that Locky such a filthy mouth 🥵🥵🥵 and I ate it up.
This is the perfect amount of sweet and spice. I can't wait to read the next installment of this series 🩵

Thank you to the author Dylan Drakes for the ARC of this book. After finishing it I have nothing but positive things to say. The characters felt complex showing vulnerability as they struggle to overcome their own anxieties and fears of failure. Drakes did an excellent job of balancing the story between plot and spice, the pacing felt like a natural progression of Locky and Benedict’s relationship as it developed from professional business advice to boyfriends. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a body positive MM romance!

As a Bear myself, I tried really hard to like both this book and the first one. I finished the first one in hopes I would like the second book better. After 100 pages, I couldn’t finish it. I found myself not interested in the characters. I felt as though the writing much like the first one was unorganized and all over the place. I did not feel any build up. I feel like it was just a bunch of info dumping and we knew all about the trauma of both characters way too quickly. The same with the sexual tension. I was missing the build up. No hate this author, but I think his style just isn’t for me.

This book was an absolute BLAST to read 😉🤣 Mind you, this book was not on my TBR. I was doomscolling as one usually does 🥲 and came across the author's TikTok where he was wholeheartedly thanking his viewers for supprting his book. His energy was so warm and genuine that I decided to check out his book. And I'm so so glad I did. 💗

Now I'm not new to romance with plus sized characters but they've always been women, because that's what I relate to. This was my first time reading an MM romance with plus sized men, specifically furry bears 🐻, and it was beautiful ❤️

I was expecting this book to be a sweet, heartwarming, cosy, feel-good read. And it was. 💗 But it was also deep, sensitive and raw. I actually cried a little. I related so much to the characters' struggle with their traumas and fears, and this really touched me where it hurt ❤️‍🩹

Don't let the amount of pages fool you, the book goes slow and steady, the pacing was very well done. I didn't feel like the plot was rushed or overwhelming at all.

To balance out the heavy themes, the dialogues in this book were ✨ chef's kiss! 💋 I loved the cute awkward flirting between Locky and Benedict, cackled at the ribbing between Evelyn and Kai, and really enjoyed the interactions of friendship between the individual characters. 🥰

Also, the smut is absolutely, descriptively FILTHY 👀 the descriptions are a little uncomfortable but 🙈 Oh and the pagebreak doodle is SO CUTE and creative 💗

Overall, I really really enjoyed this book. I'm so glad the universe and the algorithm sent me Mr Drakes' Tiktok which led to me picking this up. Will definitely be checking out Cubs & Campfires soon (which I believe is not as heavy as this one)! I'm also SO looking forward to Kai's book, I loved him in here ❤️❤️❤️ Well done, Mr Drakes 😊

Read because I saw the author's TikToks and I am nothing if not thirsty af. For good books, that is. (Really, I swear.) (Maybe...)

I actually began the first in this series, didn't like it, DNF'd, and then began this one. After getting about 40% into the book I came close to DNFing this one too, but some speed reading got me to the end. Unfortunately, neither book worked for me.

Here's the thing: I think this book has some identity issues. It's sort of a mash-up of two romance subgenres: cozy romance and erotica. While I don't necessarily think these genres are diametrically opposed, I do think it is extraordinarily difficult to get them to work together in the same book. The book goes from scenes where they're happy and talking about flavors of cakes to extremely explicit sex scenes, lending to an overall disjointed feeling. The vibes just don't work.

It's a shame because the book is right up my alley in theory (bears! baked goods! ... other words that start with the letter "b"!), but the execution is a bit off. I'll keep an eye on this author (ahem) moving forward, in the hopes of writing experience being a crucible leading to something that works for me.

*SIGH*

The MCs of this book are Locky and Benedict.
Why am I 3% into the story with Locky having a boner to the point of "almost having a wet spot" on his pants from " a cute guy " flirting with him? 🙄

Locky gulped. He didn't usually go for
younger, shorter guys. But there was something about Marty that made Locky want to pick him up and slam him against the wall."

Yeah, that's a no for me. ✌️

4.5/5 ⭐️

I really enjoyed Bears & Bakeries. As a gay man, hot bears are one of my weaknesses!

There were a few issues I had with the writing, but I enjoyed it much more than the first book in the series. The story was good, the spice was hot, and the characters were even hotter.

⭐️4.5. After just reading Cubs and Campfires, I wasn't quite expecting the switch up from "sweet and steamy" to "heartbreaking, emotional, adorable, yearning, and lots of pies."
This took me through a journey. Both Locky and Benedict have anxiety, and struggle in different ways. I found it oddly comforting the way it painted how one diagnosis (anxiety disorder) can present it self in different aspects of a person's life, but the fear is still the same. I struggled a little in the first half of the book, as I felt it was bringing all the emotions and trauma at once. I wish it delved a little more deeply into the story of why these men were like this? I really liked the quote from Locky

"Don't minimize your pain like that. Don't tell yourself that your pain is invalid because it isn't big enough, or that other people have been through more. Because down that path lies shame instead of healing. Life affects everyone differently. Some people get bitten by a dog and shrug it off. Others spend everyday of their life terrified it will happen again. There is no rhyme for these things. It isn't about how weak or strong you are, and it isn't for other people to decide whether or not your trauma is real. It is real, because you've lived it."

It also shows how beautiful friendship can be. How sometimes you don't realize how many people are on your side, until you actually let them in.

This book was heavy, but a good read. ❤️

** ARC Review **

Bears and Bakeries is the second book in Dylan Drake’s Sweet and Stocky series and it is deliciously fun.

The characters have so much depth and you get to uncover their lives and backgrounds throughout the story which meant I couldn’t put it down. I was so interested in uncovering the next layers of Benedict and Locky and what made them tick. It was beautiful watching them discover each other.

The moments of emotional turbulence balance beautifully with pockets of comfortable easy friendships. The exploration of mental health and neurodivergence makes this so relatable while also normalising people’s every day struggles.

The spicy scenes didn’t really do it for me but as a straight woman, they weren’t intended for me. It’s definitely a different vibe reading a male-written romance after reading such a lot of female centred spicy scenes. It’s a much more raw, natural and unfiltered description, lots of intense passion and rough, frantic explosions of chemistry. But the idea of consent and the power of communication were handled beautifully.

I loved the body positive descriptions of the bigger male characters, it made my heart so happy to read a story where a bigger size isn’t just tolerated but celebrated and I hope more books go in this direction.

I enjoyed Cubs and Campfires but this was even better. The story and the character development made it an amazing encompassing read.

if you get cringed out easy by certain descriptions.. this one might not be for you lol. they usually don’t bother me as long as the story is fire. & the story is great here! truly i really loved it. the spice was hot. the romance was sweet. i do really wish someone would’ve talked the author out of some of the ways he described certain things lol but it didn’t dampen the experience too much.

it is much spicier and kinky compared to the first book & i loved that.

Book 2 of the Sweet and Stocky series finds Havelock “Locky” Sorensen unexpectedly let go from his accounting job with well padded redundancy payout. His roommate Kai lovingly strong-arms him to take a risk and pursue his dream to open a night time bakery. Kai connects Locky to small business project manager Benedict Owens to get started. Locky resists, preferring to play it safe with his career and his heart. But he finds that he doesn’t know how to act when Benedict is around and soon both of their guards are let down so a new dream can take shape.

Locky is an absolute awkward mess and I love him for it. While this book is low angst, I enjoyed the emotional depth of Benedict and Locky as they navigate deeper topics like familial trauma, sobriety, and shame. This is balanced so well by the humor in this book. I laughed so much reading it. We also get to see cameos from Cubs and Campfires, which I adored.

Thank you Dylan Drakes for the opportunity to be on the Beta/ARC team. Can’t wait to see what you cook up next 😁

Dylan Drakes was kind enough to provide me with an ARC for his newest novel.

I absolutely adored Locky and Benedict’s story. Their relationship started from a chance encounter that lead to heartwarming growth for both of them.

The story tackles several sensitive topics (no spoilers - read the warnings in the beginning of the book!) that result in Locky and Benedict sharing vulnerable moments, which ultimately leads to a blossoming romance.

Overall, the concept was cute and definitely lived up to the first novel. Also, the cameo from the Characters from the first novel was the perfect added touch!
