Determined to turn goth loner Sunako into a real lady, and frustrated by their lack of progress, the guys persuade a reluctant Kyohei to take Sunako out on her first date. Now they just have to convince Sunako, who equates dating with suicide. They trick Sunako by promising her VIP seats at a pro-wrestling death match (the operative word being death). The possibility of seeing blood spilled really gets Sunako excited. What’s more, she even lets Kyohei take her out afterward to a horror flick and a delicious dinner. But wait . . . dinner and a movie . . . that almost sounds like a . . . “Noooooooooooooooo!”
Tomoko Hayakawa (はやかわ ともこ, Hayakawa Tomoyo) is a Japanese artist and writer, best known for her ongoing manga The Wallflower, which has spawned both an anime and a live action series.
The Wallflower, Vol. 11 was awesome! I was eagerly waiting for it to come in the mail, and it finally arrived (I have the later volumes but I wanted to read them in order)! It was well worth the wait!
Starting this volume off we got a “Bonus” chapter featuring the fangirls who tried to do Noi-chan and Sunako-chan harm in Volume 5. It’s only a few pages and while I’m not a huge fan, it didn’t bother me either. I preferred the real “mini-stories” (chapters) in the volume.
In Chapter 43 (the first real chapter of this volume) we get some girl bonding between Sunako-chan, Noi-chan and the princess ! It’s a great chapter showing the blooming friendship between these three! Chapter 44 is a continuation of this friendship theme! We get to see how the bond between Hiroshi-kun and Sunako-chan was formed (and how much she cares about him) but we also get to see how her friendship with the guys (Kyohei in particular) has changed her. Let’s just say Sunako-chan really moved me, as did Kyohei with what they were willing to do for their friends (even if she doesn’t actually acknowledge him as a “friend”). I think we may have gotten Sunako-chan’s first real, happy smile.
Following this - we get Chapter 45 wherein a bully victim wants to befriend and become just like Sunako-chan (Scary and Dark so he won’t be bullied again). I think this one we get a great glimpse at Sunako-chan - how she takes care of her friends (but doesn’t necessary coddle them) and always stays true to herself.
In the final chapter of this volume, Chapter 46 (my favorite) what do a pro-wrestling match, horror movie, dinner at a “dive” (with great food), and beating on a gang of thugs equal? The ideal date for Kyohei and Sunako-chan (courtesy of Ranmaru - who has totally lost it and certainly wasn’t planning the date to go down like this)! It was actually completely and totally fitting for these two and a lot of fun, for both Kyohei and Sunako-chan (and I loved reading it)!
There are still 2 more chapters in this volume that were included in the anime, such as the one where Hiroshi is kidnapped and the one where Naie and the other girl come to Sunako's house to have a party and when the 3 girls go to the spa (Sunako is so funny here; it is like one of her worst nightmares). One thing I liked more in the manga is that the kidnappers were just some random girls, not the annoying Goth-Loli group.
But there are also 2 other chapters, new for me (yay!). One is of the boy who is bullied, and who better than Sunako to be his trainer? This girl sure knows how to kick some butts! And the last one is where Ranmaru forces Kyohei to go out on a date with Sunako, with a extremely funny result (everytime these two are together is to laugh out loud). I love how all friends (the other 3 guys and the 2 other girls) are rooting for this couple.
So far they are just a couple of friends-enemies, who understand each other and who love to fight against (and sometimes, next) to each other. Nothing romantic yet. You may think it is getting tiresome after so many volumes, but nothing at all in this manga. I think this way is even funnier and more exciting.
Overall Rating: B Synopsis: A Shōjo comedy/romance manga created by Tomoko Hayakawa. At the beginning of the manga, Sunako Nakahara confesses her love to a boy, who utterly rejects her and tells her she's ugly. As any reasonably young person would do, Sunako then discards all traces of her femininity, and retreats into odd and morbid hobbies, such as collecting skulls.
Fortunately, Sunako's aunt owns a mansion that four gorgeous boys live in (huh?). Apparently, the boys pay rent to live in the mansion, and the aunt offers them free rent if they give Sunako a Pygmalian-esque makeover, and she becomes a "perfect lady". The boys set to work, and hilarity ensues.
Often, Sunako is shown as an exaggerated version of her true self that looks like a female version Cartman from Southpark. Will these gorgeous boys succeed? Will Sunako's inner beauty shine through?
I passed over The Wallflower several times before checking it out. I'm not a huge fan of the art, but I love the ridiculous plot so far. This works pretty well as a comedy/romance Shōjo, and I'm interested in the characters. The series is ongoing, so I'm not sure how long they can keep the plot interesting, but I'll definitely be reading it for awhile. It has a lot of potential.

The boys ‘convince’ Kyohei to take Sunako out on a real date... and it surprisingly goes really well, as long as they don’t try and force the romance. These two really are perfect for each other. Jealousy does start to rear it’s ugly head between Ranmaru and Takenaga when they see the other with ‘their’ girls. The girls get together to have a lady’s day and drag a very uncomfortable Sunako with them, but even she starts to warm up to the girls and shows her care and consideration for them as well.
I think my favorite part of this series is the mix of actual relationships developing around all the crazy comedy. I really love these characters, they are individuals, with unique personalities, given their own storylines and love interests, and also character growth. I love each character and even when the stories start to become repetitive, the humor and characters keep me engaged and entertained. Having fun re-reading this gem of a series.
Every chapter of The Wallflower resembles the others. The boys are pretty and try to turn Sunako into a lady, Sunako is creepy and stubborn, and trouble follows them all. Sunako and/or the boys surprise and impress one another with an unexpected display of kindness, strength, or sense of camaraderie.
While nothing ever seems to change from book to book, I still love this series--probably more than it deserves. I love that Sunako is creepy and stubborn and unexpectedly kind. I love seeing reading about those moments when Kyohei and the others recognize that Sunako is fine just the way she is. While I have no idea how the author is going to handle the eventual romance between Kyohei and Sunako, I’m enjoying seeing how the spark off one another in the meantime.
okay so all of the books of wallflower are all just mostly about this girl and she loves drake and she has really like people but one day her aunt makes her move in a house full of just four teenage boys and then her aunt asking the four boys to make the girl into a lady. and all of the books are just about how the boys are trying to do their best to help out her aunt and make her a lady. now this is going to for the vol. 9 and vol.11 because they are all most the same but they are not like they are both really good books and if i had a chance to read all of the wallflower books again i would..... i just really love all of these book they are all really amazing.
my very fist manga so it really means a lot to me....the boys were really well drawn by the author which showed how they differ in personalities and behavior. sunako-chan is very cute because she's always drawn in chibi(kid)form. the story starts as ranmaru's wife-to-be shows up..after hitting him on the face in volume 10...kyohei TELLS SUNAKO-CHAN TO LET GO OF HIROSHI-KUN...because he's somewhat jelous..however he's got a point...yuki-kun is as sweet as always...trying to keep things in proper order..
oh..the series ends as ranmaru is seen in a bathtub..
~total shock~ (0_0)

I don't find the plot terribly interesting or the characters particularly engaging. God, and don't get me started on the art.
I think what bothers me about the series is the whole notion of: You can be pretty if you just wear makeup and prance around in a dress! *temple rub*
I guess I'm continuing on with the series for two reasons: 1) I want to see Sunako and Kyohei hook up eventually 2) I have nothing better to do with my life apparently.
So cool! Date número dos! And Ranmaru going crazy!!!!! This one was particularly funny and Sunako and Kyohei are getting closer in their friendship. Ho and also is it me or Sunako is getting smaller as the manga goes? I think I saw an interview were the author talked about that but it's not really shocking and it constants of her actual body that comes out when she gets all cool or just happy.
Loved this series. I love reverse harem type series especially when the girl is considered to be 'plain.' Nakahara was a hilarious character and I loved all of her creepy ways.
It was similar in my mind to Boys Over Flowers. Same general concept and characters.
Overall series review (mostly) 4 Stars - so far, I’ve still got a few to go… Additional: Like most long running series there are some duff chapters/volumes
I loved this volume so much. From the jealousy of the 2 other ships (they will sail, even the playboy's) to the "rival". I really enjoyed the SLOW process in this volume. We were actually getting somewhere at least! Yay to my shipppp! You can do it!
Sunako, Noi, and the Princess get to know each other and then Kyohei and Sunako go out... ...on their first date? Also some fun bits about Sunako dealing with bullying.
Read earlier in the year, but the ebook version wasn't available to be added yet. Giving all these versions 3 stars until I can match them with the version I already added and rated.
