Four of Japan’s hottest guys are doing their best in their mission to turn dark, macabre Sunako into a dainty young woman. Gorgeous Ranmaru is famous for his smooth way with the ladies. But when a cute toddler named Rin shows up calling Ranmaru “Daddy,” it seems that Ranmaru’s days of swinging bachelorhood may be over! Ranmaru swears that Rin is not his kid, but they sure look an awful lot alike.
Ranmaru does his darndest to avoid the little boy, but Sunako turns out to have a soft spot for the little squirt. It looks like Ranmaru just might have to accept his role as father–and Sunako seems like the perfect mom. Will motherhood finally turn Sunako into a true lady?
Tomoko Hayakawa (はやかわ ともこ, Hayakawa Tomoyo) is a Japanese artist and writer, best known for her ongoing manga The Wallflower, which has spawned both an anime and a live action series.
OMG, that baby story. Sunako seems to be good with children. But, Ranmaru going off at the groupies, all like "Don't you ever touch my kid!", was pure win. Luckily, it turned out to not be his child, and the parents seemed to work out their differences. Funny, the child really wanted Ranmaru to be his father.
Another fun volume! I really like how the ladies in this series kick a ton of butt. The bishonen art is also a huge plus. Really enjoy this comedy series.
Sunako-chan becomes a LADY in The Wallflower, vol. 7!
Okay, okay - so it’s temporary and not really of her own volition (really it was more of an accident). I can say with complete certainty, I prefer Sunako-chan as she is (and the guys come to realize this as well). So aside from Sunako’s foray into Ladyhood via mushrooms there are three other “chapters” (more like mini-stories).
The Baby Story (“Little Lost Boy”)! Wherein one of the guys is abruptly thrown into fatherhood by a boy [Rin] claiming to be his son! Sunako-chan turns out to be pretty good with children, the guys…well it’s a learning experience for them. This one was just adorable! The other two chapters (kinda, sorta - indirectly) follow where this one ends.
A Halloween party is sure to cheer up the gang after Rin goes home. In this particular story, the landlady (and her new honey) also appear and Sunako is in heaven with a torture chamber. Let’s just say - there is a criminal (and some criminal activity) going on in this one - and it’s up to the landlady, Sunako-chan, and Kyohei to get them out of this mess! We also see another side to Takenaga - I’ve got one word: Dynamite!
In the final chapter of this book, Kyohei is in the hospital (due to certain events at the end of the previous chapter), and the gang come to visit him. Kyohei and Sunako kind of have their own adventure (separately and together) with a ghost who has unfinished business involving an old love.
Overall Rating: B Synopsis: A Shōjo comedy/romance manga created by Tomoko Hayakawa. At the beginning of the manga, Sunako Nakahara confesses her love to a boy, who utterly rejects her and tells her she's ugly. As any reasonably young person would do, Sunako then discards all traces of her femininity, and retreats into odd and morbid hobbies, such as collecting skulls.
Fortunately, Sunako's aunt owns a mansion that four gorgeous boys live in (huh?). Apparently, the boys pay rent to live in the mansion, and the aunt offers them free rent if they give Sunako a Pygmalian-esque makeover, and she becomes a "perfect lady". The boys set to work, and hilarity ensues.
Often, Sunako is shown as an exaggerated version of her true self that looks like a female version Cartman from Southpark. Will these gorgeous boys succeed? Will Sunako's inner beauty shine through?
I passed over The Wallflower several times before checking it out. I'm not a huge fan of the art, but I love the ridiculous plot so far. This works pretty well as a comedy/romance Shōjo, and I'm interested in the characters. The series is ongoing, so I'm not sure how long they can keep the plot interesting, but I'll definitely be reading it for awhile. It has a lot of potential.

This is an interesting storyline, so why is is making me yawn? The stories are cute, but this volume really seems to deviate from the whole plotlines that have been going on before. It's just a bunch of filler.
In this volume the main story is Ranmaru discovering that he may have a son. Due to the propensity of his affairs, it's entirely possible that he may have a son (and I'd be surprised if he didn't). Of course Ranmaru is standoffish at first, but eventually it leads to Sunako taking charge of the boy, which leads to a tease of a Sunako/Ranmaru pairing (would never happen, but it's cute to play at it). The entire story is like a bowl of whipped cream. It's light, sweet, & fluffy... but only good in small doses. Unfortunately this is just the beginning of a whole string of filler episodes. It's a fun ride, but it doesn't mean that it won't get a little tedious.
Would I recommend this? Sure. The storyline's weakened considerably, but it's still a decent series so far.
I love the Wallflower series (primarily the anime but also the live-action, oh man, so ridic, so great) and this is the first of the manga I've read and augh, I don't tend to love manga because of stylistic issues (art-wise, it's hard for me to tell the characters apart) but the art grows on me - the characters are all reeeeeally elongated and knobbly and pointed and skeletal, so much so that they're kind of hideously attractive. Hideous and attractive? It's weird. But Sunako is mostly a chibi and hilariously fun.
I could do with less "author's note"-style comics, because I feel like I did not subscribe to Tomoko Hayakawa's blog, yk? Pls moar Sunako, less RL adventures of ppl I do not know/care about. But I'm a chronic skipper-of-authors'-notes because I just do not care, OK. I'm a bastard, maybe.
Manga is very blink & you're done. Super quick reads. (She says, as this has been in Currently Reading for months...)
Maybe last volume spoiled me, but this one didn't hold together as well as the previous volume. Four arcs this time.
In the first, Sanako accidentally consumes some hallucinogenic mushrooms which, for some reason, turn her into a normal lady, much to the surprising disappointment of the fellows.
In the second story, Ranmaru appears to have an illegitimate child but everyone knows that won't actually end up working out that way so it's not surprising.
The third arc is about a Halloween party hosted by the landlady and her new boyfriend. He's got some entertaining quirks but it's only an okay overall outing.
The final story is set in a hospital, where Sanako and the gang meet a ghost. The twist is obvious and predictable and thus I wasn't terribly impressed. Still, no harm done.
Children and torture and ghosties, oh my! I find it hard to believe that Ranmaru-kun would be thinking of seriously being a dad, even after his "kid" left. He's fifteen, darnit! How fast do people grow up in Japan (especially when they don't age at all)?? But, I love Sunako-chan, and her little torture pain gore obsession. I was surprised at her seriously wanting to raise Ranmaru's kid; she never fails to surprise. Tama-san was a great addition to the whole hospital story, I think. Overall, I'd call this one of my favorite books of the series so far. Now I need 8! It's at the library... but... but I... I can't get it until after the weekend. (Library sad face)
Yuki brings home some mysterious mushrooms, after eating it, Sunako turns into a girly girl. The boys are so happy that Sunako has finally turned into a lady & they'll have free rent. Then they realize they prefer the old Sunako, they do everything they can to bring the old Sunako back. Ranmaru gets stuck with a kid who calls him "Daddy," & everybody believes that it's his son, then the story goes on, don't want to give it away too much spiolers. I really liked how Ranmaru can deny that it's not his kid, but act so fatherly towards him, (sigh) they look so adorable together.
Hmmmph, Morii is just 15-years-old and he may be a father! WTH! And the child was AT LEAST 3 years old. WTH!
The volume 7 has several silly stories, as always, but I enjoy reading this manga. Not sure if the butler they referred to in this volume is the same one I imagine, but it was a funny reference. There is also something paranormal going on when Takano is at the hospital.
Sunako, as usual, is crazy and gloom, and that is why I think she is the best character in The Wallflower.
This series is so odd but I enjoy it. It focuses more on the interactions between Sunako and four hot guys. There seems to be a slowly forming bond between the group. And Sunako is slowly becoming "beautiful" more often. Maybe she is becoming more comfortable with herself.
Loved this series. I love reverse harem type series especially when the girl is considered to be 'plain.' Nakahara was a hilarious character and I loved all of her creepy ways.
It was similar in my mind to Boys Over Flowers. Same general concept and characters.
Overall series review (mostly) 4 Stars - so far, I’ve still got a few to go… Additional: Like most long running series there are some duff chapters/volumes
it was fun to see Sunako act like a real lady for a change. Her attitude was so funny and so stereotyped!!! But yeah it was fun to see. I really wonder if she will end with Kyohei or not...
As always there is an adventure happening in this manga. The characters are lovely as always and Sunako continues to wow me with each adventure the gang has.
