A MATCH MADE IN HELL

Four of Japan’s hottest guys are struggling (in elegant surroundings) with the biggest challenge of their lives . . . transforming the geeky goth, Sunako, into a delicate lady. When Sunako’s auntie–and the guys’s landlady–arrives unannounced, she finds Sunako enjoying a slasher flick in the darkest recesses of her room. Clearly no progress has been made! So auntie decides there’s only one way to turn her niece into a Send Sunako and Kyohei on a little romantic getaway. Their accommodations for the evening consist of a vibrating bed, two-way mirrors, and a security guard who’s blocking the only exit. Can Sunako survive a night alone with a creature of the light?

Things get real here!

Sunako-chan, I…I…am so disappointed!

The Wallflower, Vol. 9 was certainly more “serious” in this volume - especially the last chapter. This book (especially the last chapter - which left us with a cliffhanger) left me all sorts of discombobulated. If you’re just tuning into this series…I suggest you start with the earlier books (preferably in order) otherwise you will be totally confused and have no idea what is going on.

The first two chapters are connected (Part 1 & 2) - where the Landlady (Sunako-chan’s Aunt) finds out the truth about Sunako. She attempts to…influence Sunako - by encouraging a romantic getaway with Sunako’s “boyfriend” (Volume 5 - I think). Let’s just say her plans don’t go as planned (which is fine with me as her original plan was well kind of disturbing). Anyway, Sunako and Auntie have a lovely bonding moment - which is promptly ruined by Auntie deciding she still wants Sunako to become a lady!

In the following chapter - Kyohei and Sunako are kidnapped by creepy people in creepy outfits - by people who want Kyohei to return to his old town. Yuki also gets to shine in this chapter, I have to say I really do like Yuki! This chapter ties into the following (and final) chapter of this volume - where Kyohei heads home (temporarily). We get to know a lot more about Kyohei’s past, including his family and what happened. I don’t even want to think about his blood “family”, I can kind of see where his mom is coming from - but for me, that's no excuse! Sunako's mother is much more supportive! It’s no wonder Kyohei is the way he is - the poor guy. I will say that Sunako-chan, has for the first time - really, truly disappointed me. I don’t think she intentionally meant to do what she did but the damage was done nevertheless.

I liked that we got some character development and some more “serious” things but I do miss the “fun” that usually comes with this series (I know, I know not everything can be “fun” all the time). Poor Kyohei - I totally can understand him now, Sunako has to make things right.

The only way to make Sunako a lady is to basically have Kyohei rape her. Disgusting volume.

So we're going through the "being handsome is not always a good thing" phase. Honestly, we need this so like gj author.

Overall Rating: B
Synopsis: A Shōjo comedy/romance manga created by Tomoko Hayakawa. At the beginning of the manga, Sunako Nakahara confesses her love to a boy, who utterly rejects her and tells her she's ugly. As any reasonably young person would do, Sunako then discards all traces of her femininity, and retreats into odd and morbid hobbies, such as collecting skulls.

Fortunately, Sunako's aunt owns a mansion that four gorgeous boys live in (huh?). Apparently, the boys pay rent to live in the mansion, and the aunt offers them free rent if they give Sunako a Pygmalian-esque makeover, and she becomes a "perfect lady". The boys set to work, and hilarity ensues.

Often, Sunako is shown as an exaggerated version of her true self that looks like a female version Cartman from Southpark. Will these gorgeous boys succeed? Will Sunako's inner beauty shine through?

I passed over The Wallflower several times before checking it out. I'm not a huge fan of the art, but I love the ridiculous plot so far. This works pretty well as a comedy/romance Shōjo, and I'm interested in the characters. The series is ongoing, so I'm not sure how long they can keep the plot interesting, but I'll definitely be reading it for awhile. It has a lot of potential.

Sunako's aunt finally begins to wonder if her niece is really as much of a lady as the boys claim she is & comes home unannounced... only to discover that Sunako is mostly unchanged. Her aunt decides that the only way to turn Sunako into a lady is to give Sunako her "first time" with Kyohei (she was told that they were a couple & was never told the truth). Sunako then has to survive a night with the "creature of the light". Also in this volume we begin to see more of Kyohei's past life with his family and why he's so antisocial. When an offhand remark sends Kyohei running off, the entire group has to wonder if he'll ever return again...

I really liked this volume. It made up for the filler episodes by showing us some real character development between the main characters of Kyohei & Sunako. Looking at Kyohei's past, it's frankly understandable why he became the way he is. I really enjoyed this volume. I'd recommend it, but by this point the only ones who should be reading it are ones who are familiar w/ the plot-- the story is too far along to jump in anywhere at this point.

Perfect Girl Evolution Vol. 9
by Tomoko Hayakawa

5 out of 5 stars

Reread in 2020

Kyouhei and Sunako are kidnapped! The pretty boys tried so hard to save them. But it turns out that it will reveal Kyouhei's part.

Well, it emphasizes that we never asked to be born. To be born as a children with a handsome look. No one can really ask, tho. Poor Kyouhei.

=============

Aku mau comment covernya dulu. Jadi, di cover depan ada gambarnya Ranmaru yang pakai topi hitam dan lagi melet. Baru nyadar kalau matanya pink—apa merah ya? Ya kelihatan cakep sih—so, please! Namanya aja cowok cantik. Kalau cover belakang, Ahh, Sunako kelihatan lucu banget. Pakek kostum penyihir dan bawa labu. Aduh, unyu banget deh.

Part 35 dan 36 Jarak untuk Jadi Lady

I didn't care for the first story. Trying to coerce people into sex is not cool. Also, I'm starting to feel that all the characters in this manga is superficial, including Sunako. So they're a bunch of "hot" guys...get over it already! This "creatures of light" crap is getting old. I'd love it if Sunako and pretty much every character would grow up.

The second story was better. We are shown some of Kyohei's demons and he's at least gaining some depth as a character. Not much, but some.

If I hadn't already ILL'd most in the series I'm not sure I'd finish reading this series. It seems to be going nowhere and there is no real development of most of the characters.

In this Kyohei-centered volume, Tomoko Hayakawa again reinforces the point that he is obviously the guy for Sanako. While it's been hinted at in previous volumes, this time we learn why Kyohei is the perfect choice.

In the first arc, the landlady shows up once again and decides the only way for Sanako to become a lady is for her to be imprisoned with Kyohei until she... becomes a lady.

In the second arc, Kyohei is kidnapped by the business owners in his hometown and we learn why Kyohei is staying in the house.

uhhhhh

look guys i am easily amused, my default method of enjoying entertainment is to laugh at it

as it turns out one of the few things i can't laugh at are...screw it, i know someone's going to jump on me for saying this and i don't care. the entire storyline where sunao's aunt tries to get kyohei to ladyfy sunao through sex? it was really really hard to read that and not think about corrective rape. i know it's not how she meant it and it's not how most people will read it but the text was there. i'd much rather we stick to the standard horror movie jokes, please and thank you

so yeah. let's all move onto volume 10 and pretend that never happened alright? 2 stars

MIGLIORIAMO

I feel sorry for Kyohei, although thankfully he is not a depressed or angry character, with all the drama that his life has. Yuki was cute on the chapter where he wants to be a cooler guy, instead of a cute boy.

Loved this series. I love reverse harem type series especially when the girl is considered to be 'plain.' Nakahara was a hilarious character and I loved all of her creepy ways.

It was similar in my mind to Boys Over Flowers. Same general concept and characters.

I would actually give this a 3.5 as I liked this one a bit better than most. Maybe it's because the boys aren't quite as flat as they've been in previous volumes.
