3 stars not for me
Loved the first book even though I found the heroine just this side of annoying. But what I didn’t care for in this story was the "third-act breakup" at the beginning and the focus around it and less on plot intrigue, couple time, and most of all, the heroine, Ashley.
The heroine was culpable in the hero's incarceration and should have demonstrated more compassion toward his plight, empathy over his thoughts and actions for revenge against her, and in fact, simply just put her feelings aside and helped him. I expected more solidarity, and it happens later, but you gotta pull me in with more than her usual push back and indignation, followed with her "running,” running away, leaving town and having to be forced back to assist.
I haven't written the review for book 1, yet, but yeah, Ashley tipped the scales as annoying af in this one. Her indignation was unwarranted, her temperament, her stubbornness. She was the most selfish, insufferable, recalcitrant character!
I didn’t just ruin his life. I ruined mine too.
“I’m not backing down. I have to figure this out. For Jason, Louisa, and me.”
“My help.” Her voice is flat. “Why would I help you?” “Not for me. For Jason. For Louisa. For the truth we deserve to know.”
“I’m going to make the decision that’s best for me.”
It’s all about her.
Why wouldn’t she help the man she was instrumental in putting away for 14 years of suffering? I sort of disliked her in book 1, but it was balanced against Rain’s blackmailing her, tempering her defects. But in this story, I despised Ashley. It’s hard to enjoy a book when the heroine is loathsome.
Additionally, it was plot driven by mostly a lot of internal mental wrangling and not enough investigation — until the end, so while it was plot heavy, it didn’t have the intrigue or tension of book 1. Add to that not much steam, and after book one where it made more sense, book 2 didn’t hold my attention. Two non-steamy books when the attraction already is already out there? This series would have been best marketed as a suspense thriller, not a romance novel, as that the former element was done well.
I lost interest in the story because I couldn't abide the heroine where I had huge empathy for the hero. And yes, I get it, he originally did some not so nice things, but he had relatable reasons. She, even once she realized her role in his incarceration, just didn't come around to his aid soon enough. She experienced virtually no remorse for her, albeit unintended, involvement in low-key ruining his life.
Aside from my sentiment about the story and characters, the writing was very good. The character development was also good. Great duet as a thriller, not so much as a romance novel.
