A Churn in the Dark: An Into the Churn Novella

Rate this book
Love and murder stir between the stars.

Four months after the Belethea Race Royale team’s narrow escape from Otho and Casolla’s dark syndicates, Sylvia Long, Grady/Guns, and Belethea’s newest doubles team arrive on Crion for its inaugural New Year Race. But with Sterling/Hart enjoying their own holiday back home, Sylvia struggles to balance her ever-growing duties as both team coach and manager.

Meanwhile, Agent Shiro Tanaka—Sylvia’s boyfriend and the Belethea royalers’ one-man security team—is determined to use this working holiday to propose to Sylvia under Crion’s aurora-bathed skies. But when the race takes a dark turn, all their plans go out the airlock as Shiro and Sylvia rush to save their royalers.

The bad blood is still thick in Casolla, and someone isn’t about to let Belethea forget it.

This is a fun extension to the series! I have an ARC of book three that I have to read, so I figured it would be best to read this one first. I'm glad I did. Hayley packs a lot into a hundred page novella.

Update!
*********
The Into the Churn series is available on Audible & Kindle Unlimited:

Reading Order:
Into the Churn (#1)
Into the Fire (#2)
A Churn in the Dark (#2.5 - contains key plot developments, highly recommended NOT to skip)
Into the Abyss (#3)
A Churn in the Virtual Society (#3.5 - final book, releases 16 Sep)

*********

When I finished Into the Fire, I knew I wanted to see more of Sylvia and Shiro, so I absolutely loved writing their bonus chapter for the Whimsical Exclusive edition. But the request for more of these two came as a such a wonderful surprise!

I loved visiting another beautiful moon of the Casolla system and exploring the Race Royale from two new perspectives in this fast-paced novella. A Churn in the Dark continues the action and romance of the first two books while also setting the stage for Ezren and Foster's final adventure in Into the Churn #3. More than that though, I loved diving deeper into Sylvia and Shiro's relationship and their lives as they approach a new chapter in both of their journeys. And of course, getting more of Turnip is always a good thing!

Thanks so much for coming on this adventure with us, and I can't wait to see what you all think of A Churn in the Dark when it releases on November 19th!

I absolutely LOVED this wintry, romance-filled adventure. Sylvia has been a fave since book one, and Shiro totally stole my heart in book 2. Getting a glimpse into their heads was such a treat. And you get to meet a new pair of royalers—lavender haired twins who immediately bring to mind Tuffnut & Ruffnut from How To Train Your Dragon. 😆 With romance, danger, and a high stakes chase, this novella is the perfect bite/sized addition to Chow’s delightful series.

If you are a fan of the series like I am then this is a must read. Not only does it include the best of Sylvia and Shiro romance, it also has crucial plot points moving forward with the series. It makes me sooooo stoked for book 3. Aw! This was the perfect novella. It was short, but it felt complete bc i already knew most of the characters so well. I did love the two new characters introduced though! The Amara siblings have the funniest sibling dynamic. They squabble with each other, have purple hair and are tall. Love them. Turnip is still the cutest pink cat with six tails. Her drink spilling trick comes in clutch. This novella is the perfect blend of high intense action and slow conversation. I love the new planet the race takes place on! Crion is unique and beautiful with its snowy mountains and aurora borealis. I love that this was duel perspective from older adults with Shiro and Sylvia. I love team Belethea and the family unit they created! “You said it from the beginning, right, Syl? On this team, we take care of each other.”

SPOILERS and book notes:
Yeah! A new planet Crion! “Hulking mountains of ivory and glacial blue towered around the airstrip in Crion’s singular city of Lumik. Above their peaks, a translucent emerald sheen danced across the twilight sky, a continuous aurora courtesy of the terraforming efforts that had finally warmed the atmosphere enough for continuous habitation.” Bex and Simon Grady are a team and the Amara siblings Dean and Kit are another. The siblings are loud and obnoxious bc they bicker hehe. They have lavender hair and eyes and are super tall. I like them. Turnip the pink cat with six tails is with them too. Kit has a boyfriend named Jabari that handles the social media stuff like Micah does for the team! Makes the team look good. Micah and him are the best. awww! Sylvia and Shiro are so adorable together!!! ““You’re already on my calendar.” “I made the calendar?” Eyes wide, Shiro straightened his shoulders, exaggerating his swagger. “You must really love me.” Shiro is there as protection. Look what he tells Sylvia: “You just do your boss-babe-coach thing,” then kisses her. ““Okay, now you’re ready.” His eyes danced as he proffered his arm. “Can I escort the Coach Sylvia Long inside?” Sylvia rolled her eyes playfully, her stomach still flipping. “I don’t know why I put up with you.” “Because I love you madly with every inch of my soul,” he replied, the words almost teasing.” Ooo the teammate who died by Calderon’s hands in the first book (Genevieve Navarro) has a little sister who is at the race named Martina but goes by Ina. And she is TICKED at Ezren and Foster and the team! Look what she says to them! ““Congratulations, Belethea race royalers, reigning champs. I hope it was worth the blood.” She flashed a cold smile as the coach practically dragged her away. “Because you’re going to drown in it tomorrow.” Shiro you romantic! “Though many settlers in Casolla saw marriage as old-fashioned, his adoptive grandmother had instilled in him certain values that couldn’t be ignored. And one of them was if you met the person you couldn’t live without, you swore your life to them.” “Ever since he’d caught Sylvia dancing around Carmella’s empty kitchen, belting out a song off-key at three in the morning, he’d known he was going to marry her.” It’s cool to watch the race from the perspective of the viewers! Sylvia and Shiro! this is what my husband does for me: ““Then why are you so nervous?” Shiro folded her in a hug from behind, his ease totally at odds with the tension threatening to strangle her. “I’m always nervous, Shiro.” But even as she said it, she melted into him. Something about Shiro always made her feel safe.” AWW the siblings have disappeared in the race and so Shiro and Sylvia have to secretly go out and find them!!! Crow “the King of all the syndicates” left a message by killing York and disappearing Dean and Kit and saying he is excited to work with Sterling/Hart. AW!!! And they ran into his thugs! “Shiro: Sylvia! Shiro took her helmet in his hands, his dark eyes boring into hers. Shiro: Look at me, I’m going to get you out of here. You trust me, right? Sylvia took in another breath, forcing herself to calm as she stared into the dark swirl of his eyes, fierce and hard. Sylvia: I trust you completely. Shiro: Good. Now, I need you to know, in your bones, that you’re going to make it out of here. Sylvia did not miss the “you” where there should’ve been a “we,” and she’d be chaffed if she let these thugs not only take her royalers but Shiro as well.” They saved them but now are trapped in the mountain maze of ice tunnels and caves! Running! And she says this to him: “And as much as I love the team, they don’t come before you.” Aww team simon and Bex and kit and dean are the ones that came and rescued them! ““Chaffing royalers.” Shiro’s laugh bordered on manic. “I’m beginning to think you lot can survive anything.” Dean: ““You said it from the beginning, right, Syl? On this team, we take care of each other.” Awww and he proposed in the ship on the way to safety!! ““Sylvia, I love you more than all the stars combined.” He sucked in a long breath, his voice whisper-soft with palpable hope. “Will you marry me?” It’s an old world ring so it’s super precious and rare. ““My grandmother said these days, we don’t need a symbol to pledge our souls to the love of our life.” He gave a sheepish shrug. “But sometimes it helps. And when you are the most precious thing that’s ever happened to me, this… is just a ring.” And when they told the royalers also in the ship what happened: ““What’s the joke?” Kit asked, peering back at them from the front seat. “No joke.” Sylvia straightened, flashing the ring on her left hand. “We’re getting married.” And then the car erupted with four people screaming and cheering and talking at once.” Sylvia will take the general team manager position and hire help! Like a coach and social media person etc. I love Turnip and all her drink spilling glory. And this last quote that ties in the title and moving forward with the series: “And even though he couldn’t deny that something churned in the dark—waiting for them in the blackness between the stars—he could savor this perfection. This love. This joy. That belonged to them and them alone.”

This is a fast-paced thrill of a romance!

This novella was jam-packed! It had danger and mystery and high stakes and wild thrills. Not to mention so much swoon and sweet romance. Shiro and Sylvia are coming in close as my favorite of this series! I loved seeing their relationship dynamic as they realize they want a future together, but first they have to survive to get it.

One of my new favorite genres is novellas about pre-existing couples that show them being adorable and domestic (i.e. Mysteries of Thorn Manor, Last Violent Call). This one is no exception. I love watching people fall in love, but there’s just something about getting to see people who are already in love do life together. Especially since in this case, we got to learn more about two side characters who have never had a POV. And of course we love Turnip the seven-tailed pink cat who keeps knocking drinks over! (What accurate cat behavior.) It was adorable and exciting and action-packed, just like the rest of the Into the Churn series. And even though Ezren and Foster, my two favorite characters, were barely in it, I still really enjoyed it. Still waiting for my novella about Grady!

AWESOME NOVELLA definitely essential to reading the rest of the series, don't skip it
But for the review!! SUPER sweet with a strong dash of peril, as always. I love Shiro, he's such a fun combination of chaotically quippy and competent. And Sylvia is obviously the legend of all time. The romance was amazing, I can't WAIT to see what this plot leads into, and of course. I loved the Grady/Guns content. They're so great. Can't wait for the conclusion to the series!!

This novella was so cute and perfect for this holiday season! It had all of the action of the other Into the Churn novels along with the sweet moments of romance that always bring a smile to my face. I loved the beautiful new planet and more of Turnip the cat as well. Definitely a perfect end of the year read to tide me over until book three 🤗

Actual Rating: 4.5?

While some series have novellas that are optional, this one is one you won’t want to miss! There’s action, high stakes, and romance, just like any other book in this series, but with some new perspectives! These books never drop in excitement or quality. I enjoyed getting to know Sylvia and Shiro better, and any other fans will feel the same way.

And seriously, I cannot stress this enough when I say that the audiobooks have fantastic production quality. Not only are there some sound effects, but I think the narrator does a fantastic job of creating distinct voices that, for the most part, don’t sound too cheesy.

I can’t imagine what comes next for our characters, but I’m excited to find out! Hopefully the next book comes out on audio soon :)

Truthfully? I loved Shiro the minute he stepped onto the stage in Into the Fire. I wanted him and Sylvia together from the first second they flirted.

And this novella was PERFECT. It perfectly showed their relationship and what they meant to each other. It gave us an amazing peek into what we can expect in book 3. And it was so freaking sweet and romantic.

On top of all the death defying danger going on, because would it really be an Into the Churn novel if someone wasn’t trying to kill our heroes? Didn’t think so.

I absolutely cannot wait for the final installment of this series. It’s been such a freaking treat.

While I'm not normally a fan of novellas (I prefer there to be more time to develop the characters and the story), I really enjoyed spending more time with Shiro and Sylvia in the latest instalment of the Into the Churn series.

Because we already knew the characters from Into the Fire, the shortness of the story wasn't as much of an issue, and I've always loved stories where the romance isn't the issue. I love it when the main characters are ride or die for each other as they face the evils of the world around them, so this was a perfect fit.

If you enjoy the series, you will enjoy this novella!

4.5 stars rounded up.

This was such a fun novella and I liked that our main focus characters in this story were not royalers. Slyvia is the typical team manager, always keeping everyone on track and living for the team and the people. Because of this, through the first 2 books, most of the readers do not get a strong glimpse into Slyvia personally and what, outside of Royale, makes her tick. It was fun to not only get her insights into this novella but to also see the continuation of her story with Shiro. Chow does a great job of keeping the story action-packed with so many twists and turns, while also allowing the characters to grow, adapt, and have relations. It was amazing.

"I see myself as the keeper of a pink cat." Shiro planted a kiss on her forehead, eyes twinkling. "Everything else is flexible."

A Churn in the Dark is a novella set in the Into the Churn world. Instead of following Ezren and Foster, we follow Sylvia and Shiro. I found their story to be absolutely delightful and thoroughly enjoyed their adventure (I might like them even more than Ezren and Foster). Plus, this story had Turnip (the six-tailed pink cat)!

This is a must read before the next book in the series is released due to some major plot developments, but it's a quick read and well worth it for Sylvia and Shiro!

This book bridges Book 2 & 3 of the ITC series and gives us an exclusive glimpse of the Casolla system from the perspective of two beloved side characters, Shiro and Sylvia. Like all Hayley's books in this series, this is a romantic, intergalactic whirlwind of a ride. And trust me, you do not want to miss this little, yet BIG, adventure!

P.S. Perfect wintery Christmas/New Year read!!!

I’ve loved Sylvia since book one, and like Sylvia I quickly fell in love with Shiro, so it was amazing to see them in a book of their own!

This is a very quick read but it’s still action packed, full of high risks and sweet romance.

A Churn in the Dark helps set the stage for book three and makes me even more for what is to come!

Action packed scifi full of heart and grit

Hayley is a pro at telling stories that melt your heart, stir your soul, and leave you wanting more. The Into the Churn Series is incredible and this novella is amazing. I love seeing Sylvia and Shiro grow as a couple and as people. I'm sad that there's one more book left in this series but I know it's going to be great.

This is a super cute and necessary addition to the series! I’m glad I didn’t skip it, because some very important things happen in this novella. New characters are introduced, big bad guys are being bad, and of course the planet itself is working against them. I love Shiro’s character and this novella is all about him and Sylvia. They’re so cute!

I'm so glad Sylvia got her own moment to shine! And finally learned to delegate 😂 She's just as determined as Ezren, and one of my favorite side characters. She and Shiro are a great couple too! Love how well they balance each other. Also, I'm highly impressed he didn't lose that ring!

I listened to this on audiobook and the narrator (who is the same as earlier books in the series) did a great job.

This was a quick novella read but it was still packed full of danger, action, and romance. It was to dive into some of the side characters and see them fight for their happy ending.
