THE SPIRIT OF A LADY

Four fabulous guys must completely transform a high school girl if they want to keep living rent-free in her aunt’s luxurious mansion. But Sunako Nakahara, the most fashion-hopeless girl in Japan, would rather live like a hermit and watch her favorite horror movies than undergo a makeover.

When the guys stumble upon the mansion’s secret subbasement, they discover the ghost of a prim and proper lady who (thankfully) begins to possess Sunako’s soul. It seems their problem is solved. Too bad that Sunako’s now-suitable personality includes a desire to lock the boys up in the mansion’s dungeon!

I liked this much more than the first volume. The aggravating shallow stuff about Sunako needing a make-over has mostly fallen by the wayside, I guess because her aunt who wanted her fixed up seems to be gone (again, and no one seems to stay at the boarding house). There is even less effort at realism here. We have explosions, ghosts, secret sub-basements, violent criminals, adulterous affairs (all involving Ranmaru, of course), a sex dungeon, and even a high-stakes badminton match.

The one time the guys encounter someone they think looks proper ladylike she turns out to be a psycho killer, so let that be a lesson to them.

Ends in a bit of a cliffhanger.

This series is NOTHING like the anime. I wanted to find out how it ended since the anime was an open end, but I will not be reading this problematic series any further.

I absolutely LOVE the characters in this series (Sunako is hilarious and Kyohei is weirdly adorable)...but dear God, the plotting of this particular Volume was kind of painful. There were definitely moments of interest that developed among the characters because of the particular mini-story arcs of Volume 2, but at the end of the day the plots were just kind of...

Yeah. Likeable, though! I mean, come on, when you basically have that leads to this...

...How can you NOT love that?! Can someone say Happy Effing Fan Service?! I definitely enjoyed the outcomes from the meandering of this Volume's plotting, but admittedly the stories were kind of weak. Still! I read for the characters, dammit, and the characters ARE ALL OF THE WIN!

Perfect Girl Evolution vol. 2

In this volume, Sunako's aura as a lady is very strong. Please admit that she has a lady material--even though it's just happen caused some woman ghost possed her body.

Then, the real type of woman from Ranmaru finally revealed here. He is indeed a womanizer. Takenaga and Noi still being a shy couple. Yeah, more way to go for them to be as a couple.

==================

It’s like been an Emagod! Kyouhei kissed Sunako! Ahh, It was very amazing when I saw they were kissing. Yaa, emang sih, ceritanya buat nyelametin Sunako dari si Eliza, tapi Kyouhei kenapa bisa kepikiran kayak gitu? Nggak papa deh.

Ternyata, kekhawatiran Takenaga terbukti, Sunako didatangi si perampok. Untungnya, Kyouhei datang tepat waktu. Ahh, mereka so sweet banget pokoknya. 

4,5 creo!!

I'm not sure if I want to continue this series. The guys have some pretty garbage personalities, and Sunako seems pretty one-note. The description for this volume said that Sunako gets possessed by a ghost that makes her more lady-like, but it seems like just a one-off gag for the New Year's "episode". Maybe the artist/author didn't know where she was going with this series at this point? At any rate, this volume is okay but not great.

The art is painful for my eyes. Just big blotches of black or screentones and no details if I don't count few illustrations where main heroine is "pretty". I did not find this volume enjoyable. I always wanted to see how the story will develop but in this volume I had a feeling, there is no plot at all...

So we leave off this volume with a mystery hmm? I'm all up for it!! I really like how the ship is progressing, even if our main character doesn't seem to notice. It's only the 2nd volume and ugh I love this so much.

Some of the parts in this was a little cringey but at the same time I don't expect anything less from these characters. I thought it was so funny when Sunako was possessed and Kyohei kissed her, like obviously she would come to because he's a creature of the light.

CW: Attempted rape, serial rapist

You can tell this was written at the turn of the millennia. The Christmas rapist chapter was very odd, and not really a favorite one. I still like the characters, though and it has some cute shojo heart fluttering moments.

The difference between this and Ouran Host Club is much better art, hotter boys, and easier to follow plot. This is the Halloween and Hot Springs episodes.

Another hilarious installment. It's so weird but it's funny. The boys are still on their quest to make her a lady. With ups and downs.

Another compelling addition to a sensational series! My highest praise goes to the outstanding illustrations that effectively mixed humor and romance with alluring images.

However, I didn't connect much to three out of four chapters in this book. Either they were forgettable or just plain boring. My expectation was a little high on the second installment because I gave 5 out of 5 stars to the first one. I also found myself bursting out laughing back then. But this book, although a nice addition, still brought my hopes down.

I love the author, but she was just annoying at some times. There was a time when I was reading her Author's Note (A/N) and I couldn't care less. Reminds me of my friend who shares everything that popped into his mind, but it was irrelevant to the topic. Sorry, Tomoko-sama, but don't worry, I still like you. I just hope that in the next installments, I would want to read your A/Ns.

The lack of quotable quotes in the book thoroughly disappointed me. It was overflowing on the first one, but without the good quotes, I can't clearly see the good moral lessons in this one.

Still, this book deserves not less than 2 stars. I was truly entertained at some times, and my reading pace didn't dwindle. The illustrations are wonderfully drawn as always, and I found myself falling in love with the other characters beside Takenaga!

You see, Takenaga was the only one I liked back when I was watching the anime (and mind you, I think I've watched the anime at least 5 times, thus my connection with the manga). But reading this made me appreciate the other characters, too (hurray for more screen time!).

But the best part is this: THE CLIFFHANGER AT THE END! If a book ended with a smooth cliffhanger like that, then the reader would definitely want to read the next one. Oh God, I can't wait to borrow the third installment! I'm sure it would be a blast (but please, use cliffhangers sparingly, okay? *feels a mixture of excitement and madness and sadness and longing*).

Lastly, fangirl alert: WHAT THE HELL I LOVE HOW THIS BOOK ROMANTICALLY PROGRESSED. DAMN I NEED THE THIRD BOOK NOW SERIOUSLY.

Comment on the cover:

Eek! It was so much cornier than the first book. I appreciate these gorgeous, handsome guys as the cover... but for me? Just... no. *Kyohei, stop looking at me like that... or are you Yuki?* All right, back to our problem of annoyingly identifying who's who.

Round up and recommendation:

This was a nice addition to the great The Wallflower series! Humorous, entertaining and light - this would be perfect for anyone with an interest in sequential art. If you also want to have some beautiful fantasies to some gorgeous and stunning high school boys (ehem, keep it PG, all right?), keep reading. They were high school-ers, and Sunako might be a little DARK at some times (well, oftentimes), so if you are drawn to this kind of theme, then I would gladly recommend this to you!

Sample excerpt:

"You're right.

Sunako is...

...so dark and so negative all the time.

I don't know how she can go on with her life."

"How can you say that, Kyohei!?"

"But you know what?

At least she has respect for other people's lives, unlike you."

(Hayakawa, 2004, p. 107-108)

KISS!!

Okay ^^'…now that that’s out of my system…

The Wallflower, Volume 2 continues the fun and adventures/mayhem with Sunako and the guys! Seriously it’s so much fun - one of the reasons this is one of my favorite series! Awesome art and even better characters! Sunako-chan is still, and will likely always be my favorite! But I also like Kyohei, Ranmaru, Noi, Takenaga and Yuki (I think in this order).

In Volume 2 we get to see Sunako-chan’s School Festival project - I’m sure most of you who follow this series can kind of guess the kind of thing Sunako likes. We also get a cute Christmas chapter (okay so that one part with the serial rapist was kinda eh - but I did like that Sunako gave him a bit of her punishment! You go Sunako!), as well as a New Years special where Sunako gets possessed. That was pretty fun - and we got the Kiss! These two are totally meant to be together - not to mention . There is also a trip to a hot springs thanks to Ranmaru’s new girlfriend, the innkeeper. I loved Noi and Sunako’s developing friendship, Kyohei and Sunako’s interaction (their ping pong match was hilarious!) and Takenaga and Noi’s cute flirtations!

To close this volume the author leaves us with…a cliffhanger! It’s a good thing I have the third volume right next to me (especially since I don’t quite remember what happened - it’s been a while since I’ve read these - at least a few years). I really liked watching the characters (all of them) interact. I loved each individual little mini-story though it didn’t feel really well connected (except maybe the Christmas and New Years stories), I did still enjoy them very much. I love watching the relationships and friendships,

I look forward to seeing what happens considering where we left off in this volume!

Well, this really is a dark manga. Sunako is scary, but also a badass, so it is OK. She is kind of a satanical girl, so gloomy (very unlike Sawako from Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You, Volume 1, the sweetest girl I have ever read in a shoujo).

Then, happens this incident with the rapist. Sunako was going to be raped, literally! I was shocked to read this (the pervert had his pants down for God's sake!). So far I have read light shoujos, so of course it was going to shock me! Thankfully Takano was around and helped her... although she did not really need any help, she is a kick ass heroine after all.

Another chapter is about a spirit who invades Sunako's body and keeps as the guys as hostages in the basement. How weird is that in a shoujo?? Takano is again the savior, when he kissed Sunako, releasing the spirit because of it. WOW, the first kiss between the two main characters in the SECOND volume! It generally takes more (actually, forever), but well, this case was different cause Sunako did not remember anything later :S

As in general shoujos, a trip to the beach... where it may or it may not have occurred a murder! At least there is another girl in the group... a good and nice girl who is actually very pretty and is not a rival.

So, I rate this manga 3 and a half, cause it was funny, and Sunako is a good character.

Overall Rating: B
Synopsis: A Shōjo comedy/romance manga created by Tomoko Hayakawa. At the beginning of the manga, Sunako Nakahara confesses her love to a boy, who utterly rejects her and tells her she's ugly. As any reasonably young person would do, Sunako then discards all traces of her femininity, and retreats into odd and morbid hobbies, such as collecting skulls.

Fortunately, Sunako's aunt owns a mansion that four gorgeous boys live in (huh?). Apparently, the boys pay rent to live in the mansion, and the aunt offers them free rent if they give Sunako a Pygmalian-esque makeover, and she becomes a "perfect lady". The boys set to work, and hilarity ensues.

Often, Sunako is shown as an exaggerated version of her true self that looks like a female version Cartman from Southpark. Will these gorgeous boys succeed? Will Sunako's inner beauty shine through?

I passed over The Wallflower several times before checking it out. I'm not a huge fan of the art, but I love the ridiculous plot so far. This works pretty well as a comedy/romance Shōjo, and I'm interested in the characters. The series is ongoing, so I'm not sure how long they can keep the plot interesting, but I'll definitely be reading it for awhile. It has a lot of potential.

Overall series review (mostly) 4 Stars - so far, I’ve still got a few to go…
Additional: Like most long running series there are some duff chapters/volumes

Sunako is my spirit animal. Only she’s not an animal… we’d be ideal friends if both of us came out of our caves long enough to interact.

I re-started The Wallflower series this year and it while I do think it’s too long (36 book total) and doesn’t actually develop much past its initial plot. I also like it for this reason. In a way The Wallflower is comfy for being familiar.

Sunako adores horror, hates the light and struggles with people (establish beautiful creatures) and has a chocolate addiction. Society rejected her and she decided life was better in the darkness. Only her aunt wants her to re-join so the tenants (popular boys) are tasked to give her makeover.

Things that I love about The Wallflower are that Sunako is just as much a hypocrite as the rest of the so-called society that rejected her. She constantly judges people by appearance. The boys, while playing to their looks, love Sunako for who she is and defend her. I feel like I should have more issues with the ‘transformation’ part of the story but every time Sunako gets made up, she returns to her original self by the next chapter. So much of this story is about being ok with who you are.

Just FYI, the art is stunning.

I really wanted to try and read this whole series, but I had to give up. This Manga is the worst I've ever read. First of all, Sunako's character is just ridiculous. Lots of people feel like "outsiders" during high school, but this character is just too much (even for an exaggeration). It almost seems to be saying that either everything she likes is wrong and unfeminine somehow, or that girls with low self - esteem must have some kind of problem. Secondly, the boys all seem to make her in charge of "woman" things, like cooking and cleaning. Now I realize that there may be a bit of a culture gap here, but I think even Japanese feminists would agree that's a bit sexist. Thirdly, they had proven by the end of the first book that she was capable of being "pretty" and not "weird" - if pretty means make - up and high fashion (because it doesn't always mean that). And by the time I got to the rapist in this book, I was just done. Really, he rapes people because he thinks he's ugly and that's the only way he can get a girl? Soooo...The author basically was implying that only pretty girls are "rapable." Fuck this, I'm done.

When she walks through town, every plant and tree she passes dies. When she goes inside, the lights fade into darkness. And everyone who sees her cries out in fear. Her name is ... Sunako Nakahara!!

Man, I love this series. Love the art, love the humor, love Sunako and her quasi-reverse harem (no, there are no love triangles or quadrangles in this series, thank heaven), love how even though Sunako is very insecure about her appearance and generally antisocial, she can still be friends with the beautiful Noi.

I also like that it's very similar to the anime but not 100% the same -- the ghost in the dungeon scene (manga) I think parallels the mushroom scene (anime). Similar plot points get laid, but with a slightly different angle so it still seems fresh to me.

1 star off because of the scene with the serial rapist. The author was going for the OTT humor and "everybody's weird" thing that she does, which I can appreciate on a certain level -- and I'd say it's in keeping with the vibe of the series -- but, ugh.

I just love how weird this manga is!
I mean honestly, the events that happen in this volume chapter-to-chapter have very little correlation aside from a obvious rapist trend but it is still just so funny to read.

The characters are also becoming more established or I should probably say, more distinguishable from each other. I'm actually starting to pickup on their names and faces!

I'm also becoming increasingly in love with the art style, especially when it comes to Sunako who is drawn in a rounded chibi-esk style for the bulk of the manga. Even when she's in the same panel as another character like on page 161, she is still in that art style even when the other character isn't. It has this great contrast that I'm not sure I've seen before, that really jumps out at you.
