The perfect recipe for a little mayhem… A dash of accidental magic, A pinch of town upheaval, And a large helping of a dangerously handsome stranger.
In the heart of Ellamere, where magic is banished, Abrielle Grainwick works tirelessly to keep her late grandmother’s bakery running smoothly. But when a souffle recipe goes awry, Abrielle must add something she never expected to her long list of things to Unsummon the otherworldly man standing in her kitchen.
Thanks to her mistake… Magic is seeping back into Ellamere. She’s playing host to a devastatingly gorgeous stranger and his shadow companions. And she still has no idea what she’s going to enter into the Star Crossed festival’s baking contest.
As one mishap after another strikes their village, Abrielle realizes her new guest may not be as harmless as she hoped. If she wants to return things to normal before someone gets hurt, she must find a way to send him back to where he came from.
With giant toads falling from the sky and a mangy hound at her heels, she sets off on a journey of delectable pastries, self-discovery, heartwarming friendships, and romance. All of which will leave her questioning whether there is a hint of love and magic to be found in the mundane after all.
A Recipe for Magic and Mayhem is book one of the cozy romantasy series, Ellamere Enchanted. It is a low-stakes, sugary sweet, low heat forced proximity fantasy romance set in the small fairytale village of Ellamere. Each book can be read as a stand-alone but is best enjoyed read in order of release.
So cozy and delightful, this book will make you want to grab a pastry to munch on while you swoon over the romance! 💘 🥧 Sweet, funny, and with just enough fantasy to whisk you away into another world
ARC review: This book was like enjoying a cup of tea near a fireplace on a cold rainy day! It has characters that you will fall in love with and a world you wished you lived in. I’m a sucker for maps and this book had one to really help you visualize the town. I loved the story so much I couldn’t put it down. It was an easy and cozy read and I can’t wait for the next book.
This was such a fun, sweet, cozy story! I enjoyed listening to the audiobook, and the narrator felt fitting for the story. The characters were likeable, and I loved seeing their story unfold. I look forward to future books in this series!
I listened to the audiobook of this and really enjoyed it! The narrator did a great job bringing the story and characters to life.
This was my first cozy fantasy book and i liked it a lot! It’s nice to have a change of pace where the stakes are relatively low. I thought the town/world and characters were built up beautifully. The banter between Damos and Aubrielle is cute and funny and you can tell they’re such a match for each other!
I also love that we have a shadow daddy MMC who deviates from the typical shadow daddy trope. Instead of being dark and broody and “bad”. He’s got a heart of gold and an exterior to match! I also loves the self reflection journey that the FMC Aubrielle goes on in response to losing her family and dealing with that grief. I thought the author did a fantastic job bringing that to light while also still making this book a fun easy read. I will definitely pick up the next one when it’s out!
A Recipe for Magic and Mayhem was just EVERYTHING to meeeee !! It is oh so cozy, charming, and magical. I enjoyed all the cozy descriptions in this book and the romance was just the SWEETEST!
I absolutely loved the depiction of grief in this book and thought that it was woven perfectly into the rest of the story. Also, the recipes and map included in this book are just such amazing additions. I love when authors include little extras for us readers!
One more thing I have to point out is that the audiobook is INCREDIBLE! The narrator was perfect for this story, it seemed as though she herself could live in Ellamere🥹
It was a cute and cozy town with a baker who is trying to prove her skills. The FMC was cute. The surprise um character was also just cute. The storyline was a bit simple, but enjoyable.
This has to be my favorite comfort read ever 🥰 I wanted so bad for it to never end!! After so many intense reads this was such a nice palette cleanser. The story was just very cutesy, very demure 💅🏽 What Abrielle felt & What she went through was so real. Esp if you’ve had such a significant loss & are trying to find yourself again. It was just so relatable. I love this book through and through 🤍 Definitely going to re-read it once sweater weather really hits, just so I can conjure up one of those yummy recipes at the end!! Spring can’t come any faster 🫠 (Book 2)
This book is perfectly cozy with a lot of mayhem and lovable characters. Abrielle is the best main character. She has had a lot of loss in her life and needs someone who can show her how amazing she is on her own. I loved everything about this story. The town is adorable and I loved how everyone loved what they did in life. The elements of magic are the perfect addition to the setting. Deimos is perfect for Abrielle and gives her the courage to live to her full potential. Even though he has troubles controlling his magic, he does whatever he can to make Brie happy, and that made my heart super happy. After all of the insane romance I have been reading, this was what I needed.
I received this audiobook for free on the promise of an honest review.
My honest review of it was that it was okay.
While the romance aspect was sweet, I found the complete lack of spice not to my tastes. The spiciest part is when the two main characters kiss. It was all very clean, idealistic YA.
The narrator did a lovely job with the two main characters, the best friend, and the witch. I had some difficulty occasionally figuring out who said what, beyond the four characters mentioned previously, but I thought the narrator’s voice and style definitely brought a character to the story it wouldn’t have had without her.
To be entirely frank, I really didn’t much like the way the main character was written. She spent all her time worrying about what people thought and trying to meet the expectations of others. While I understand that a character usually has flaws to work through, I don’t feel like her issues were actually addressed.
Toward the end, she finally asks for help from friends and neighbors, but that’s the extent of her growth. There’s no real evidence that the character has made much growth from start to finish.
Also, there were a lot of little side threads that were left hanging and/or weren’t well connected to the main storyline.
The main character steals a book from the king’s personal library (which she doesn’t seem to have any qualms about) after being left there following the signing of the Annual Contract. I get that the contract was a vehicle to get the MC into the library with the book. But it felt like a big deal about nothing. And this type of side quest happened several times leaving me wondering why we were spending so much time on a side quest that had little to no effect on the main story line.
Bottom line: this book was okay but ultimately not my thing. The narrator did a great job with the main characters and their interactions. It’s morality was very chaste, without little to no build up of the actual romance (and the marriage proposal at the end feels like it kinda came out of nowhere, particularly with the characters not having declared their love for each other) and very idealistic. There are multiple instances of characters having real emotions over something, and then it turns into an umbrella statement about everyone trying their best or being grateful that although a physical item she loved was broken, everyone was okay.
It’s a sweet little story, but not my jam. YMMV

Abrielle Grainwick is working hard to keep her grandmother's bakery going and honouring her legacy. She is struggling with the loss of her family and trying to establish her own touch to the bakery. When she finds a new cookbook with some unusual ingredients she decides to try out a souffle. It goes awry and soon Abrielle realizes that she has summoned an Otherworldly man. But magic is banned in her kingdom with crystal barriers keeping it out. As mishaps start happening around town she starts to realize they might be tied to him and with her friends must find a way to send him home before things get worse.
This was such a fun and cozy read. And I think this was a magnificent start to a new series. Abrielle and Deimos are so cute together. Their dynamic was so great. The slow burn was so refreshing after some of my other reads. I also loved the town, I almost pictured it straight out of Beauty and the Beast. Adding in the villagers and it was just so picturesque. There is so much more of the world, and the Otherworld, that can be explored that I think is going to make this series so magical. I cannot wait for the next book.
Rating 3.5 stars *I received a review copy from the author for my voluntary and honest review
Just the burst of cosiness and light I needed after a string of heavier and more depressing reads. Stepping into this story felt like opening the curtains after days of grey - it was warm, bright and instantly comforting.
JM Wallace created a charming little world where everyday routines blend seamlessly with spells and simmering pots, giving the whole book a cottage-core or magical homestead vibe. The kitchens, the cauldrons, the small town setting - everything feels inviting, like you've slipped into a safe, warm space. It reminded me how soothing a book can be when it's not trying to wring you out emotionally.
The characters only add to that warmth. They're quirky, supportive and wonderfully messy in endearing ways. Even when mayhem erupts (and it does so delightfully), the tone never becomes heavy. Instead, it stays buoyant, hopeful and full of heart - exactly the opposite of the bleakness I'd been reading previously.
If you're looking for a romantasy novel that flips the script on a traditional "shadow daddy" (god I hate that phrase), and a book overall that brings brightness instead of brooding, comfort instead of gloom, this is a lovely, cosy escape. It's the perfect palate cleanser for anyone needing a little magic and a lot of warmth.
All Abrielle wants is to step into her grandmother's footsteps and create the next magical dessert. An ancient book with exciting new recipes could be just the inspiration she needs. Unfortunately, she gets more than she battered for when she accidentally summons a man from another realm, shadow companions included. Suddenly magic starts to bleed into the realm and Abrielle needs to find a way to protect her realm and send back the mysterious stranger while running the bakery and find the next spectacular composition.
This story is as sweet as the baked goods that started it. The simmering slow-burn is driven by forced proximity and truly charming. It's a nice reprieve from all the darker, more serious fantasy and romantasy out there. It's neither a lot of character growth nor a vast number of unpredictable twists, but a low-stakes story that feels like a warm blanket or a hug. I greatly enjoyed it and would recommend it if you like books such as "The Spellshop" or "A witch's guide to magical innkeeping".
I really enjoyed the premise of this story. A baker finds a mysterious cookbook and accidentally does magic, summoning someone from the magical realm that ends up wreaking havoc in her world. I really liked how the romance slowly grew over time, and thought it was well done. However, there was definitely more mentioning of nudity and her checking him out than I tend to like, so I'd definitely leave this for an older audience although nothing actually happens on page besides kissing. I loved the ending, I thought it was perfect even if I saw parts of it coming. I loved that the conflict didn't just have a bandaid put on it but consequences actually happened overall. One of my favorite parts was the main female character being reminded that her hero was human and though she saw the best with her hero worship, her hero wasn't actually perfect. I thought the narration was well done, I could definitely tell the different characters apart and I was very entertained throughout.
This book lives up to its name. There was plenty of magic and plenty of mayhem, often caused by said magic. It also offered a glimpse of learning how to move on when immersed in grief and learning how to ask for help.
Abrielle lost her grandmother a fee months prior, the last of her family members. She has taken over the family business, but she feels as if she can never live up to her grandmother's legacy. In desperation, she steals what appears to be a recipe book from the royal library and ends up summoning someone from the other side.
Of course, chaos ensues, and Abrielle blunders trying to fix her mistake in multiple ways. Overall, this was a fun read that really makes me want to leave my current job and become a baker in a little town somewhere with the potential for magical happenings.
From start to finish, listening to this book was an absolute delight - the narrator kept you wanting to hear more and more!
The story weaves together the perfect mix of romance, magic, and fantasy, creating an immersive world that made me never want to leave.
The characters were so endearing, with the kind of chemistry that just jumps off the page. The romance was sweet, slow-burning, and deeply satisfying! The magical elements felt fresh and enchanting, adding a layer of wonder to the plot without ever overwhelming it.
What truly stood out for me was how cozy and comforting this book felt so if you're looking for a book that will sweep you into a magical world, make your heart flutter, and leave you with a feeling of contentment, but also hopes for the next book, then this is the perfect choice.
It’s taken me a little while to come to a decision and what star rating I wanted to give this book. I settled on 3.5 stars but I’m a round up kinda girly so it’s a 4 stars on platforms where the half doesn’t exist.
It truly is a very sweet cosy story but I think it should be marketed towards younger teens. As an older reader I found it to be really slow and there wasn’t enough action to get me excited to pick it up everyday. I think this would also be a really great book for a parent and child/teen to read together!
The writing itself is very good and it’s easy to read and the author does a really great job of describing the people and what the world looks like so it’s really easy to imagine. I absolutely loved the addition of the recipes at the end of the book!
Honestly, I *might* have been biased towards loving this book for a few different reasons to include (but not limited to): the author is local, I was able to go to her local release party for this and get my copy signed, and the author is a sweetheart! Also, the MC is a baker (um hello to my sourdough era, cottage kitchen baking self), I'm a sucker for a cutesy cozy read, and at the end of the book there's a couple of recipes!
All that aside, I really did enjoy the book! It was the type of cozy read I couldn't wait to get back to each night to devour more of. It's very mild in terms of spice level and definitely has adorable meet-cute vibes. The characters are loveable, and I can't wait to see where the rest of the series goes and get to know other villagers better 😊
Features: 🧁 She's a baker in a small village where magic is outlawed.
🔮 He appears when a soufle recipe goes wrong.
🧁 Mysterious yet harmless events start happening throughout the village. Sheep fainting, grass changing colors etc
🔮 Tropes: forced proximity, found family, low spice, he falls first & a very heroric kitty.
Overall, I loved this book. It's like a cozy Hallmark romance set in a fantasy world. Loved the hero and the twists associated with him. The herorine was incredibly sweet yet realistic, which I liked. Each chapter felt like a warm hug, which is nice after a long day.
I picked up this book after offhandedly seeing it recommended in the CozyFantasy subreddit. I did not expect to love it as much as I did! The story was easy to follow, the plot was fun and lighthearted, and the characters are very lovable. I would reckon that the ending was really happy-go-lucky and almost Disney-esque, so if you enjoy a cliffhanger then I would either prepare accordingly or maybe skip this one. This book is great to read when you truly want to experience cozy vibes with loving characters. My favorite part of this book has to be the tabby cat, Tinker, and Deimos' shadow tendrils.
I really enjoyed this book it was lighthearted with a Little bit of humour great side characters no drama really just enough to keep you interested it’s fairytale like and seems to take place back in the day with the way it was written i do wish we saw more after the main characters got together to see their relationship evolve more and it said low heat but there was no heat at all it’s a great book to read after a heavy book or when you need a break from another book
If you're looking for a cute & cozy book with a little bit of magical and a whole lot of baking involved this is the book for you! I loved reading this book because though it's not a literature masterpiece it was a good book to escape into! The main FMC was absolutely adorable and the relationship between the FMC AND MMC was precious! I feel like the writing really made it easy to envision the town and townsfolk & gave it this whimsical vibe.
Overall I loved it & would recommend to readers who love a more cozy vibe!
ARC review: This book was soooooo good!!! I have just been getting into cozy fantasies and this is the perfect addition to my collection. The world of Ellamere was the cutest little fairy tale town and I really fell in love with all of the characters. I can’t wait to snuggle up to binge Tansy’s story next!!
This story was so freaking adorable, genuinely cozy and sweet. Abrielle and Deimos are so much fun, their adventure to find Deimos' way home is so entertaining. I cannot wait to continue this series!
HUGE thank you to J.M. Wallace for the audio version of this book. I enjoyed it so much!
I genuinely enjoyed listening to this, so much so that I started to look for extra things to do so I could relisten to things I thought I may have missed while listing at work.
