This is the third book in the series, it works as a standalone but I recommend reading the others first. Lord Winston and Mattie have had a rocky relationship. As kids they battled, then they kissed once as adults and then they battled again. And boy, the insults fly! On the one hand you kinda want to slap Winston for being so rude but on the other hand I love banter so it’s great. Haha. There are a lot of different things going on in this story. Winston is trying to help keep his aunt and cousin safe from his abusive uncle, Mattie’s Uncle and Aunt have just died and her father is now a Viscount and a lot more is happening. So Mattie and Winston form a truce and get to be friends and know each other. I loved their transition through this story. I also loved seeing Winston’s sisters again. I just love them and their family dynamic. Overall, I loved this story so much and I definitely recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
This was one of my most anticipated books to read, and it wasn't a disappointment! It's definitely my favorite so far in the series. 🥰
Mattie & Winston have known each other since children, and used to be friends, but circumstances distanced them, so they've been at odds and enemies for years. (Which is probably why this is my favorite so far because I do love the enemies to lovers trope 😆) Watching them become friends again and grow was the sweetest thing ever, especially as they started to go to each other for guidance and encouragement with their individual battles.
This was a great reminder of a book to always forgive one another and look for the best in others, and love is always worth it. 🩷
This is book 3 in The Lockwood Family series and can be read as a standalone, but I recommend reading them in order. A perfectly clean, closed-door regency romance that I highly recommend! 💕
Such a great book! This is a book that has you thinking just one more chapter. It is so good! Winston is a younger son and a barrister. He thought he would love helping with the law and judicial system but events have him doubting if he can continue. Mattie is the vicar’s daughter and has just found out her father is now a viscount and she is a lady. Having lost her mother, she turns for advice to the only woman she is close to Lady Dallington, Winston’s mother. Winston and Mattie have been at odds verbally sparring with each other for years and now is no different. But as Mattie and Winston struggle with their problems, they find themselves in danger from an unexpected source and must work together. So very good. I received an early copy and this is my honest review.

~The person he despised most could turn out to be his greatest chance at love...
“No one is too broken to be put back together. There will always be cracks. But, the cracks are what make us special.”
-The Gentleman’s Miscalculation, is book 3 in the dear Lockwood Family Series. It can easily be read as a stand alone but, it would be a shame to miss out on this dear series and start in order. This story is a light-hearted, clean and lovely romance set in the Regency era. This is a quick, but delightful story filled with all the great things including: great humor, witty banter, some suspense, mild danger, plot twists, lots of sparks of chemistry, healing, and depth. Also, I should not that within this story and series, I thoroughly love the emphasis on dear family relationships. It’s heartwarming to see the support and rally they give each other through the good and hard times. The unwavering love, care, and support along the way makes all the difference. Watching the dear main characters in this story go from being enemies to something more especially in this story had my full attention. Seeing both characters heal and grow from individual struggles, and together overcome and stand true for each other was inspiring and satisfying, as it wasn’t an easy feat. It required dedication, hard work, trust, forgiveness, and pressing forward with hope amid the obstacles. It’s a story that has the ability to tug on the heart strings and is worth the read. 🙌🏻📚☺️
“There is no other place that I would want to be than right here. With you.”
Winston and Mattie are the best. Enemies who call a truce. Everyone close to them could see it before they did and were so supportive, but in good, healthy ways. He’s protective. She’s caring and patient. There’s banter, suspense, sweet moments and character growth. They’re all so well written, each with their own personalities and quirks. I just appreciate their family dynamics in general. I have a lot of opinions on one of the characters but it could be too spoiler-ish so I’ll keep them to myself 🤣 We all know at least one. I felt the frustration so deeply. I’m also so excited for Melody and Elodie’s stories. I can’t wait! 5 ⭐️ (obviously) ❤️
“Winston knew that he had every reason to be happy, but he wasn’t.”
I loved jumping into another Lockwood family book. I love that we get more with Melody and Elodie along with Winston. I don’t care what anyone says, Winston deep down is just a protective cinnamon roll. I love enemies to more, there is just enough of that tension and banter to keep it entertaining.
“Running away, wouldn’t change the past or absolve him of his mistakes.”
I adored Mattie in the other stories and the friends to enemies to more relationship was the best. With a sudden elevation and status, Mattie is lost at how to be herself. She wants to be happy and continue helping others. Winston struggles with his feelings toward Mattie, whether they are annoyance or friendship. He has so much guilt and won’t let himself lean on anyone.
“Their relationship was complicated, filled with banter and disagreements, but beneath it all, there was a connection he couldn’t deny.”
I love that Maddie and Winston slowly build their friendship again and learn to trust in each other again over time. They were childhood friends or frenemies until one kiss changed it all.
“We may have been adversaries over the years, but never once did I see you as anything less than beautiful.”
Also, you are going to get annoyed with her sister Emma, it’s guaranteed, so prepare yourself. There is some tension and crazy relatives floating around in this story.
“I’m asking you to remove the mask for me and let me in.” “I’m afraid if I let you in, I will never let you go……I don’t want to be let go.”
“He had fought so hard not to love Mattie. But he couldn’t deny it any longer. Loving her was like breathing. And that is what scared him the most.”
This is such a spectacular book! An easy read with so many laugh out loud moments and a little danger, suspense, and romance mixed in. The Lockwood family’s warmth, closeness and banter make these books a delight to read.
Winston is the perfect grumpy, cinnamon roll. His protectiveness of Mattie and his family was amazing. Seeing his internal struggle over the results of his case was sad. The relationship he built with Mattie though 🫠 “Let me in, and I promise to never betray your confidences,” she said… “I’m afraid if I let you in, I will never let you go,” he admitted…
Mattie is a delight. Her love and tenderness toward her cousin, patience with her sister, and spicy attitude to Winston was all perfectly balanced.
I absolutely adore the Lockwood family! Lady Dallington, Melody, and Elodie always make me smile with their wit and love for everyone. I hope we get Melody and Elodie’s stories too!
This ARC was provided by the author. I was not required to give a positive review, rating and opinions are my own.
This was very much all over the place. They constantly reference a past kiss that leads them both to think the other hates them- only to find that they could've simply asked the other person! I'm really not a fan of contrived drama / conflict. Then there's the somewhat random seeming backstory of this abusive uncle? It's highly unnecessary TBH. All in all you feel like you're reading a bunch of different stories that are loosely tied together. The beginning was dreamy, the middle was total fluff, and the ending came out of nowhere. Oy vey
Lord Winston Lockwood is a disappointed barrister. The realities of his profession have caused him to doubt his career choice. He is also aggravated that his family's nearest neighbor (Mattie Bawden) is at the Lockwood estate more often than he likes. He must stay at his family's home to protect his aunt and her son from her ne'er do well husband, Isaac, who is causing trouble.
Mattie Bawden is facing her problems; her uncle and aunt have died of fevers in India, and their only daughter (Franny) is now part of their family. Because of the deaths, Mattie's father has become a viscount. He has been a vicar for years, and the family must move so he can take his place in society. There are enough elements in this story to keep it interesting.
There’s a fine line between love and hate and I think that’s why I love the enemies to lovers trope.
I love that Mattie and Winston knew each other, but also had so much to learn about each other. A good reminder.
Mattie and Winston form a truce to meet some common goals. I love what develops from these. There’s so much going on that I never got bored and I was increasingly invested in so many aspects of the story. There’s characters to love and characters not so lovable. In fact one incredibly unlovable character. I found myself scoffing a time or two. How dare she?! You will understand once you read it. She would be perfect for a redemption story.
If you like regency with some obstacles to overcome and some plot twists, this is perfect for you. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
This was the third book in a series, but could be read as a stand alone novel.
Mattie and Winston’s story is a must read for fans of sweet regency romance! I loved the enemies to lovers genre and the constant banter between the two of them. Winston wasn’t a perfect main character, he had a journey of healing to go through and that made him more relatable. Mattie seemed to be a practical saint for living with her sister Emma. I am not sure how Emma could be so awful all of the time and Mattie still stayed positive and kind. She was a person to look up to. Her quote is one of my favorites from the book, “Sometimes, people need kindness more than they need the truth,” Isn’t that the truth? The Gentleman’s Miscalculation by Laura Beers is a delightful story that will have you saying, “Just one more chapter.” I received a copy of this book for free; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
"Why couldn't his family see the true nature of Miss Bawden? Despite their praises, he alone glimpsed the darkness within her heart. "
Winston Lockwood and Mattie Bawden have known each other for years—her father is the vicar and she's friends with Winston's sisters Melody and Elodie—but they haven't gotten along. They agree to a truce amid their personal challenges. Mattie's dealing with the weight of her father’s new title and the responsibility of helping her grieving cousin, and her sister Emma, who couldn't be more selfish and self-important if she tried. Winston is burdened by a legal case from his past and driven by a sense of duty; he's also trying to keep his aunt and nephew safe from her abusive husband.
I love the Lockwood family!! I also love a good enemies-to-lovers story and Lord Winston and Miss Bawden more than fit the bill. I loved Winston’s devotion to protecting his family and how much he cared about helping people—it's a reason he's a barrister. Mattie is such a patient and caring person but I frequently wanted to smack her sister and father. They only thought of what they wanted or what benefitted them, and they had me so mad on her behalf, that I often found myself yelling at my Kindle!
The dynamic between Winston and Mattie is the heart of the story. Their journey from animosity to friendship, and then to something more, is beautifully paced and believable. The witty banter and the gradual reveal of their true selves created a compelling romance and I was completely invested in Winston and Mattie's journey to love.
This addition to the Lockwood family series is a delightful blend of historical romance, simmering tension, and a touch of suspense. It can be read as a standalone but I feel it's more enjoyable if you read the previous books so you get to know the other characters better.
I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions in this review are my own.
This is the third book I’ve read by Laura, and once again, I absolutely loved it! This story had everything I could hope for in a historical romance: the trope of enemies to friends to more, a dash of suspense, and plenty of moments that had me laughing out loud—especially thanks to Elodie’s antics. She is, in fact, my favorite Lockwood!
Laura once again weaves a story of growth and vulnerability as Winston and Mattie navigate this uncertain time in their lives, with the help of each other. Their shared history—one not widely known, had turned them into reluctant enemies. But as they commit to respecting the truce they’ve established, they begin to lower their walls and discover more in each other’s presence than they ever imagined.
Winston’s haunted past and Mattie’s determination to help her cousin cope with her grief, create the sweetest friendship that blossoms beautifully. Their journey from mutual respect to undeniable affection (and attraction) was a journey I am so glad I was there to witness.... as they started to grapple with the feelings they both have been denying for years. But can they get down to the bottom of WHY they fell apart in the first place? And can they risk their hearts with each other once more?!
I loved this! The suspenseful moments had me hooked, and the mix of emotions as they became friends again, and the banter back and forth, was something I could not get enough of! This book has the perfect mix of humor, romance, and excitement, and I can’t recommend it enough. Laura has a real talent for writing stories that stick with you long after you finish them. I absolutely love the Lockwood family and can’t wait to read more about them in the future!
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but that didn’t influence my review in any way. The 5-star rating was fully earned!
The MMC, Winston, seeks solace in alcohol to ease the guilt for the death of a family as a result of his professional actions. A profession he chose while seeking the respect of his parents and wanting to be his own man as he is the spare heir. Winstons aspirations are also driven by the rejection he felt from a family friend he kissed a year before. The FMC, Mattie, has lost her mother and is the daughter of a vicar and a dear friend to Winstons sisters and his mother that dotes on her as a daughter. Unfortunate circumstances have made her cousin an orphan and ward to her father who became the heir to his family title. After having been kissed by Winston and then treated coldly since, their relationship is an exchange of quips and glares but her close relationship with the family keeps her presence continually. The Family has aided an aunt and cousin in escaping and is in hiding from an uncle by marriage who is physically harming them and has become desperate to retrieve them to punish them for their escape and to be able to collect the stipend funds. He is a menacing character that really get under your skin and stops at nothing to force the family to return his wife and child. The side characters either had my heart, respect or I wanted to put them in their place. The family relationship was very heartwarming and the burdens they carried and support for each other was very touching. I couldn't be more grateful to have been a part of this ARC team, this was a new-to-me author that instantly became a favorite. I enjoyed her style of writing and greatly enjoyed the story and the characters she created. This story is full, by that I mean there is no filler or fluff, it is one of those stories where every page is significant and leads the reader through to experience all the highs and lows and difficult situations they face.
Winston and Mattie were absolute perfection! We got a taste of their interactions in the previous book in this series and I had already fallen for them then. Now we get them as the main focus and their warring ways with one another is starting to come to an end. They were friends as children, Mattie being the vicar's daughter and living right by Winston's manor. But as they grew up and attraction grew between them, an animosity built up that they've been stuck within for some time now. Always seeming to argue and not get along, they decided on a truce to keep things amicable between them.
But in the background, suspense is building as Winston's activities to keep his own family safe are starting to interfere with everyone around him. An estranged Aunt is hiding from her abusive husband, and that husband has arrived to threaten them all and collect his wife. Which means Winston and Mattie find themselves in the middle of some serious danger.
The growing friendship between Winston and Mattie was wonderful to watch unfold. He carries so much anger at himself for things that have happened while being a barrister, and Mattie is carrying her own scars from the loss of her mother when she was young and the current loss of her Aunt and Uncle. Mattie is twenty one and never debuted into society either, with her Uncle gone and her father inheriting the family title, everything is changing for Mattie's family.
Their friendship and growing relationship was filled with a lot of misunderstandings and moment of deep reflection. On their own behaviors and learning how to listen to others. Sometimes our own scars make it hard for us to know how others truly see us. Winston and Mattie were a wonderful reminder that it's important to take your time and listen to what people are saying and what they're not saying.
Laura Beers has done it again! Just when I think I can't love the Lockwood family more, she brings us Winston and Mattie's story in book three of the series. Their story is absolutely lovely.
Lord Winston is the younger son of a Marquess and successful barrister, while Mattie is the eldest daughter of the village's vicar. They've known each other since they were children... more like they've irritated each other since they were children. Winston and Mattie's witty banter and their competitive need to drop the other down a peg or two has most of the people around them believing they either hate or love each other. And you know what they say about love and hate... there's a thin line between both.
As Winston and Mattie struggle under the weight of unexpected family obligations and expectations, help is found where they least expect to find it. Calling a truce and agreeing to act more civilly leads them to realize that maybe they do make good friends. When danger shows up and threatens their budding friendship, misunderstandings threaten to tear Winston and Mattie apart. To overcome past hurts and current threats, they have to trust one another to get through it together and find their happily ever after.
Winston and Mattie's sweet transition from enemies to friends to more is helped along by the delightful Lockwood family. While the book has its own happily ever after, it's best to read the rest of the books in the series to see how Winston and Mattie's relationship has evolved and to get more of the Lockwoods!
This was so good! I love the friends to enemies to lovers trope, and this does not disappoint! Winston and Mattie were childhood friends and almost sweethearts until one even sent them in different directions. Since then, they have been locked in a two person feud.
Winston was a great lead, and I loved that he wasn’t the perfect hero, but rather someone who was trying to heal and overcome immense obstacles. He’s a man who had lost his way, and I loved the way Mattie was able peel back those layers of his personality. I also loved how protective he was of Mattie, even if his communication could have used some work.
Mattie was the best, she was sweet and sassy, kind and loyal. The injustices she faced in her family made me so upset on her behalf! Seeing her get a champion in Winston made me so happy. I love that overcoming their obstacles took effort and dedicated decision on their parts, they really worked hard to regain their friendship. The is romance, suspense, fun family members, and everything else you need in a great regency romance!
Thank you to the author for an arc copy. All thoughts are my own.
The Gentleman’s Miscalculation is the third book in the Lockwood Family series. All the books in the series have their own happily ever after. It can be a standalone, but I recommend reading the series in order.
Lord Winston Lockwood is a gentleman who needs to prove himself, is guarded, and very protective of those he loves. Miss Mattie Bawden is opinionated, sassy, compassionate, and feels responsible for everyone in her life.
The Gentleman’s Miscalculation has it all. It has banter, a hate/love relationship full of chemistry, a protective hero, a compassionate heroine, healing, mystery, and a few unexpected twists. I love the Lockwood’s and their love of Mattie. I do NOT like Mattie’s sister! I so enjoyed the interactions between Winston and Mattie even when they seemed to be fighting – I was rooting for them the whole time! Their support of eachother in the end was so heartwarming. The Gentleman’sMiscalculation is a must read! I loved it!
- Regency romance - Childhood friends - Enemies to more - Family dynamics - Grumpy gentleman with heart MMC - Compassionate and strong FMC - Drama and adventure - No spice
So happy to have Winston and Mattie’s story! Their rivalry has been brewing for the past couple of books and I loved getting the full scope of their history together!
Winston and Mattie fight all the time, they even seem to truly hate each other. But after tragedy strikes Mattie’s family, leaving them in new financial circumstances to navigate, Winston and Mattie seem to run into each other more often. They decide to strike a truce and become friends again. But something besides friendship has been simmering beneath the surface for years and now it is all coming to a head again. Will they accept their growing feelings for each other or fight against them and never experience the love that could result?
I enjoyed this book and the journey our two main characters take. They may have fought all the time but they were well suited and I loved how the misunderstandings of the past came to light and how they moved forward from them. The ending was super sweet! Very excited for the next book in the series.
I received an advanced copy of this book from the author. I was not required to leave a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Such a fun story as Lord Winston Lockwood and Miss Mattie Bawden are always fighting one another. The story picks up from where the last book ended as Winston's brother is just married and leaving with his new bride for her home in Scotland. Lord Winston hates that Miss Bawden always seems to be visiting his home.
There is a thin line between hate and love and these two don't realize that they are actually walking that line. Lord Winston's mom seems to believe that her son actually may have feelings for Mattie. So when there is a death in the Bawden family that actually has made Mattie the daughter of viscount instead of a vicar, she has a lot to deal with. Winston's mom keeps asking him to help Mattie out like taking her on a carriage ride and teaching her to dance. Can Winston and Mattie call a truce from their animosity for one another?
I loved watching Lord Winston and Miss Mattie start to truly interact as she helped him deal with grief from a past case he tried in court. There is also a threat to the Lockwood family as the abusive husband of their aunt comes looking to find her. They have hidden Sarah and her son to keep them safe. The husband seems to be looking to hurt Mattie to get to the Lockwoods and Winston is trying to protect her.
Will Winston and Mattie reveal their feelings for one another despite the thing from their past they don't want to discuss?
I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.
“Even when I thought I hated you, I loved you. I have tried to fight it, but I miscalculated my feelings for you."
I have been looking forward to Winston's story since this series began two books ago! Isn't that a good sign when an author dangles a carrot and makes you want to know more about a character months before you get to? I'm so excited to say that it was worth the wait!
On the surface, this is an ongoing enemies-to-lovers story, but we get a truce relatively quickly. It doesn't mean all is well, though, when a threat shows up and is more dangerous than anyone really knows. We get to watch Winston make a return to his true self, and Mattie is the instrument for making it possible. They have the sweetest love story, and one that ends almost too soon. Never fear... happy endings abound, and a new Lockwood sibling is posed to take the stage and our attention.
Book three in the Lockwood family series is my favorite so far! I received a complimentary copy of the author's story to read without the promise of a positive review. All thoughts contained here are my own.
Mattie and Winston have been enemies since time immortal, except for that one time… Winston has a lot of guilt and regrets surrounding a trial that ended tragically, which keeps him from pursuing his dreams, including Mattie. I loved that when he shared with Mattie his painful secrets, she lovingly helped him to be able to move on.
Mattie is a fiery redhead and is not afraid to speak her mind, especially to Winston. Her independent spirit, generous heart, and patience with her niece made you love her and hope she got a chance to pursue her own happiness.
Things to Enjoy: second chances Regency era humor danger nosy sisters fierce protector
This is the third book in the Lockwood Family series but can be read as a standalone. I loved Winston’s eavesdropping sisters and hope their stories will be told too.
I received a complimentary copy of the book. All opinions expressed are my own with no obligation to write a positive review.
This book is third in a growing series and was just as fantastic as the first two. It can be read as a stand alone, but this family begs to be read.
Mattie and Winston have not gotten along for years. When Mattie enters mourning for a deceased family member she ends up showing her vulnerable side to Winston. He responds with compassion which leads to a truce from hostilities. The budding friendship helps Mattie learn to stand up for herself. Will it also lead to love? Danger? Dancing?
Highlights: I loved both carriage rides (bugs!) The dance practice was sweet Winston’s sisters are amazing and I can’t wait for their stories!
I love Mattie for the compassion she has for those around her. I love how she is wise beyond her years. I love her journey.
I love Winston for how smart and gentlemanly he is. I love how he wants to do the right thing. I love his protective side.
Oh a great continuation of the Lockwood family series! The author has created a whole world with lifelike characters. Some very lovable and others not so. Winston is a bright man but blinded by his past , yet has kindness and strength. He is faithful and loyal to family and friends. Mattie is also loyal and struggles with her hope to a chance for a better future. The story of their relationship from enemies to more is slow as they work past mistakes and misconceptions. There is a subplot as well that adds another element. I hope the author planes to write more of this series and gives the two sisters their own stories. I recommend the series and this book (each can be a standalone, but why deny the pleasure?)
Winston and Mattie have always fought like cats and dogs, but there is a fine line between love and hate. This next chapter in the Lockwood family series is just as good as the previous books and expands on a cast of interesting characters, allowing us to better know the family. As happy as I was to see Winston and Mattie’s relationship develop, I am now also intrigued to find out what will happen with the rest of the family and look forward to the next book in the series. The element of danger that Isaac’s character brought to the story added depth and intrigue. Enemies to lovers is one of my favorite tropes and this clean, sweet story didn’t disappoint!
This book is a continuation of the Lockwood Family series by Laura Beers.
In this book, Lord Winston Lockwood is haunted by his past and by the expectations of others. He is also trying to help keep his aunt and her son protected from her abusive husband.
Miss Mattie Bawden is trying to help her family when her father comes into a new title unexpectedly. When Maddie and Winston spend time together, they become friends, but maybe they can become more than just friends.
This book has lots of fun moments, along with some drama, danger, suspense and romance and is a great addition to this series. This author's books are clean and wholesome with wonderful characters.
This is a delightful regency romance. Winston and Maddie have known each other for years but the last year or so they have fought like cats and dogs anytime they were around each other. Winston is the second son, so he became a barrister, but he also owns a small sheep farm. He is definitely a moody, grumpy character. But it’s nearly impossible to stay in a bad mood when sweet Maddie is around. I loved how she was able to draw him out as well as his two sisters. The storyline was intriguing and fun as are the characters. The banter is charming and the romance is sweet.I am excited for the next story in the series. Each book can be red as a standalone, but I recommend reading them in order. They are well worth it.
If you’ve been following the Lockwood family this is Winston’s story. Winston, the second son who feels he is a failure - a sorry barrister & an apathetic sheep farmer. He constantly argues with Miss Bawden and can barely tolerate being in her presence…but then something begins to change between them. What about his Aunt Sarah and her son - can he keep them safe from her cruel husband, Isaac? Twists and turns abound - an abduction - shots fired - what will become of Winston? You won’t want to put the book down - great read, Laura Beers!
I absolutely adored this book! The couple's chemistry drew me in completely. Their dynamic was fascinating—did they truly despise each other, or was there something deeper at play? This charming story blends Romance with witty banter, intriguing mystery, and unexpected twists. Plus, it's refreshingly free of explicit language and spice. I'm so invested in this family, and I can't wait for the next installment in this captivating series!
