Unlocked Hearts

While Snowbound

Rate this book
Snowbound with the famous rocker might be her best friend’s fantasy, but it isn’t Ella’s. Nor is she impressed with the fact Brady Gates was voted sexiest man of the year – twice. Ella was looking forward to the isolation of her mountain cabin and the peace and quiet she needs to finish writing her book. Rescuing the careless celebrity in the midst of a blizzard and taking him to the safety of her remote cabin was not how she intended to spend her time on the mountain.

Weary of lovestruck fans climbing into his bed uninvited and the ever present paparazzi, Brady Gates had planned to take an incognito break from his hectic life and spend several weeks alone at a remote mountain cabin.

Finding himself stranded in a blizzard doesn’t bother him half as much as the fact the one woman he wants is the one woman who is the least interested in him.

I decided to read and review this book after reading a one star review that left me curious about a book really being that bad. I can safely say it wasn't. I loved it and didn't put it down from start to finish. The romance was amazing and realistic enough to make me feel like it just might happen like that. It made me wish I had my very own cabin in a mountain to generate my very own happy ever after.

Brilliant romance story and a great quick read to warm the heart.

DUMB. DUMB. DUMB. SO DUMB IT HURTS.
description
JUST SHUT UP. YOU'RE STUPID.
description
NO MORE PLEASE! YOU DUMB.

description

This was far too saccharine, suffers from an excess of cliches, a surfeit of terrible dialogue, excessive fairy-tale elements and tedious.
description

I TRIED TO ENJOY IT!
description

There were ridiculous plot holes, cringe-worthy dialogue and the male lead resembled a Pop Star (like Justin Bieber) rather than a Rock Star.
description description

The front cover gave away that it'd be a fluffy chick lit type read but I read "famous rocker" and thought I'd give it a try.

When I started skipping pages (the story really dragged) I gave up reading it and went to the end to see how it pans out. Jeez what a fair-tale.

================
The Characters

Hero - Brady Gates: he reminded me a of a silly pop star. Its not due to his lifestyle (there are indie/rock stars who are "clean" e.g. The Killers) but it's more due to his persona, appearance, attitude and language.
He didn't have that edge - books starring rock stars ought to have (at least) some grit.
Another thing that didn't make sense were Brady's problem with the pap. It seems authors fall into this trap thinking that if you're rich (billionaires suffer a similar fate) or famous than the paps constantly hound you. That's not actually true - there are many BIG artists and rich people who manage to avoid this.
They generally live in areas where the paps aren't likely to be (the paps won't just "attack" one star unless it's Lady Di - they attack whomever they consider tabloid fodder hence the big cities LA, NY, London etc or areas with a concentrated celeb quota will be targeted).
I think the author really exaggerated the paps hunting determination (like going all the way to a remote cabin to take a few pics??). Rock music isn't even mainstream like pop so generally rock stars are less of a target than pop stars such as Bieber.
other than that the hero comes across like Justin Bieber, particularly during the first few chapters (self absorbed, unintelligent, unnecessarily arrogant (and not in a hot way) regarding his fame). He's a tall, dark handsome rich cliche with the whole "do you know I am" tedious and unoriginal routine **yawn** - everything about him was unoriginal.
description

Heroine - Ella Lewis: she tries too hard to come across as "indifferent" to Brady's fame but instead is the classic cliche of an impertinent heroine pretending to be unfazed by the hero. I've read these scenarios so many times - the Royal Prince snubbed by the pauper who turns her nose at him, etc
description
It's tedious and an awful plot ploy. If you've read "The Sexist Man Alive" by Julie James than you'd witness a brilliant romance between an Oscar winning actor and a sassy Lawyer.
This book just tries to hard meh! The author strives valiantly to manifest the heroine feeling nonchalance - but instead conveyed a "lady doth protest too much" scenario.
description
description
Overall her personality reminded me of a middle aged woman (not only because she listens to country music). But just her personality and dialogue was so Small Town Middle Aged Dull Person. What's worse is that she's an indie (but not best-selling) historical romance author. OMG - writing romances is such a girly career anyway - like Wedding Planner, Interior Decorator, Beautician etc but historical romance! I don't mean to be condescending but that's more like a hobby for middle aged women than career for a sassy heroine.
The ending of the book is even worse with regards to her "career" - what a fairytale.

If you like fairy-tales, don't mind anything poorly written and plot holes than this is ok.

Rock star Brady Gates is used to having women throw themselves at him, it is the main reason he decides to take a month off and go into hiding at a rented mountain cabin. Brady never expected it to be a disaster and to meet Ella who has zero interest in who he is. Both have misconceptions about one another but as they find themselves snowed in together they find themselves becoming friends and wanting to explore the attraction for each other.

Very fun read. The end was rushed a bit but overall entertaining holiday story. I liked Ella, she just says what she feels and doesn’t sugarcoat. Brady is for the first time in a long time vulnerable and not hiding behind his profession and he likes it. Will check out more by this author.

I love indie authors - I'm constantly on Amazon downloading freebies and looking for the book that has me buying another.

Thing is, this book put more effort into discussing indie authors, and self-publishing, than it did on the romance. Tell me a story, don't tell me why I need to support indie authors - I already do, I downloaded the book.

The hero was alright, he had the standard douche-turns-nice-guy lines. The heroine was also alright, when she wasn't talking about her "writing". In the end, the characters and storyline needed more developing, they needed a spark.

Got a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Brady Gates, voted sexiest man of the year, gets tired of his hectic rock star life. Wanting to write some music, he enlists help from his bodyguard to let him go to a secluded place away from random women throwing themselves at him and paparazzi following his every move.
Ella Lewis, a young historical romance writer, will be spending another quiet time at her cabin to finish another book. Rescuing a hot egoistic celebrity was not one of her agendas and being stuck with an attractive wannabe-writer who doesn't even know/like him wasn't his plan either. But being stuck together in a cabin with a blizzard just outside changes every impression they had with each other.

People tend to figure others just by merely looking at them or hearing a few things about them. But once you really talk to that person and know him/her better, it will prove to you that people are not only pools of mud in the sidewalk but are like an ocean; deep, fascinating and waiting to be explored.
This is one thing about the book: wrong impressions and breaking them.

I find the plot interesting: two people from different upbringings in life trapped together in a place. However, some things in the story tend to be a bit predictable.

The interaction between the main characters, Brady and Ella, were funny. I also like the supporting characters. I also appreciate reading about the feelings of a self-published writer. That job is not easy but satisfying and exciting.

I also like how the protagonists' relationship progressed, it was at a right pace. Though after the climax of the story, it seemed a bit rushed.

Nevertheless, I like how this is written, the story and how this is concluded.

While Snowbound is a sweet romance which really is a story about two people finding love where they least expected it. Both Ella and Brady planned to take some time to get away and focus on their writing; Ella her romance novels and Brady his songs. Ella rescues Brady from a massive blizzard after he slid the Jeep he was driving off the road and takes him back to her cabin where they find refuge from the storm.

Initially I found myself rolling my eyes at Brady’s character. He was conceited, egotistical and acted like a complete jerk. Talk about major feelings of entitlement. Ella’s character on the other hand was refreshing and down to earth. I loved how she deflated Brady’s huge ego throughout. Go girl!

Even though the plot was not unique, some of my all-time favorite stories are along similar lines and I enjoy seeing how other authors take a well-worn plot and give it their own flair. I believe Ms. McIntyre did a superb job in this area.

All in all, I greatly enjoyed this story and am tickled to find another new author that I can add to my auto-buy list. For anyone looking for a light, sweet (not graphic) romance, I suggest looking no further as you won’t be disappointed.

I literally read this book in one sitting! Immediately, I fell in love with both lead characters and couldn't wait to find out what would happen next, and so, hours later, I still haven't put the book down.

Ella is my kind of girl, she is independent and knows what she needs and wants in order to be happy. I appreciate that she is honest and doesn't play games in love. Meet Brady, a megastar musician that is jaded by life and has little ability to trust anyone.

When a gigantic blizzard leaves the two strangers in close proximity, you will not want to wait to find out what happens! I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys the chase.

I loved the premise of this story. It started out great, but the dialogue lost me. Too many times I rolled my eyes at some of the conversations especially between the main characters. Neither had a real "voice." Also, there was too much "telling" and not enough showing. I never felt a connection to the characters. It was as if they were kept at arms length from the reader. That's why the few times that Ella cried, I almost didn't care. Plus, the end was wrapped up way too easily. Sometimes you want to feel a "will they or won't they" scenario before the "happily ever after."

I really enjoyed this book. People are not always how they seem. The main character learns how different a person can actually be once you get to know them. This is a sweet story that will leave you wanting more.

Brady is a rock star that needs some alone time. His body guard suggests a rural cabin that his cousin could procure. Ella is a local that has her own cabin that is heading up for some alone time to work on her novel. Little did they know a blizzard would throw them together.

Better than what you usually get with a freebie/cheapie. This is not the story for people looking for extreme, gritty. ver bad boy rocker types. This is a (slightly) more realistic take on a common trope. I liked the slow build better than the insta attraction you often get with these stories.

What a wonderful, sweet read!

Don't let the sensual series fool you. I've read a number of books that said they were sweet, that I was embarrassed to read. There was some sex, but very nicely dealt with. I 'bought' the first book in the series because it was free, before I noticed it said sensual. After I read it, I went ahead and bought some more. I thoroughly enjoyed these books. I also got to learn a little more about independent publishing!

2,5 Stars: Just a quick read.

I liked the overall storyline and the characters.
Sure there were a couple of plotholes. And I often didn't know what to expect from the book, and where the writer wanted it to lead - just a sweet romance or more of a R-rated romance. I didn't like the writing so much, it sometimes lacked creativity.

While Snowbound was one of the books in my Winter Reading List and I had high hopes for it. Sadly, I don't have a lot of good comments about it. Actually, the only really positive point that I can think of is that it wasn't very long, so it didn't waste a lot of my time...If not for the sexual references, this would probably by a perfect romance for teens, because the characters don't seem to have grown out of that age.

What I liked:
- again, not much. The plot idea was interesting, though, and I feel the author could have done much better with it.

What I didn't like:
- the spelling mistakes. English is not my native language, but I still cringe when I read things like "the unexpected missal coming toward him" instead of "the unexpected missile coming toward him"
- the characters. Both Ella and Brady are pretty bad, but Brady holds the record for one of the worst heroes I've ever encountered in a romance novel. Ella rescues him from a blizzard and the first thing he says is that he accepts to go to her cabin but there will be no sex involved. Excuse me? The woman just rescued you out of a life threatening situation and that's how you thank her? And then, half an hour later when he's in the shower, he's asking her to join him? And it goes on and on. Eventually, I gave up on trying to make sense of them and their interaction.
- the dialogs are just as absurd as the characters, and there are too many repeated words and expressions. When Ella and Brady have sex for the first time, for example, the words "nude body" are repeated over and over. Actually, in some cases, word choices are actually weird.

So, all in all, this is a no-no in my opinion. It only gets two stars because of the interesting plot idea. Too bad that the author could not find the right words to convey it properly. There are lots of raving reviews over at Amazon though, so some people still have enjoyed it. I didn't, and I don't recommend it.

A short but sweet romance 4 stars

I really enjoyed this book. It’s not very long and I easily read it in one sitting.

Ella went to her cabin in the woods in the beginning of November where there was TV or internet so that she could get some much needed writing completed. Being a self-published author she made a decent living but wasn’t well known. She liked it that way though because while she had some dedicated followers no one really knew who she was since she wrote under an assumed name so only the people in her small town really knew her.

Brady on the other hand is famous “rock star” He is constantly hounded by the paparazzi and often finds strange women in his bed that had finagled there way there through money or sexual favors. Brady is tired of living in hotels and just wants to get away for a while so that he can work on his new album. When his bodyguard has the idea to rent one of his cousins cabin in the woods for the month he’s all for it. Needless to say, things didn’t go as planned.

I didn’t like Brady at first because he seemed so stuck on himself but Ella often put him in his place and since she wasn’t a crazed fan that was after him he soon realized what a jerk he was being and settled down. They were able to become friends and with no TV or internet they talked a lot and got to know each while snow bound together in between each of them working in separate rooms to give each other privacy. I enjoyed the way that they got along and especially the way that Ella knocked Brady down off of his high horse. LOL!

This book tries to show that "you shouldn't judge a book by its cover" and in many ways succeeds with that. There are some funny parts to this book such as the example of Brady in a snowstorm using a wig as a hat, and the interaction between Brady and Ella is good to read as she isn't prepared to take any rubbish from him. Being with cell phone service, TV or internet is a great way of getting to know someone and this is what happens with Brady and Ella.

On the downside, there was a great deal of Sam (the dog) mentioned at the beginning, especially with her being a special needs dog but then it's like she was forgotten about halfway through. It is also hard to believe that Brady could disappear for a month without anybody noticing, even with him trying to cover his tracks like he did. It is obvious from the writing that Anna McIntyre knows intimately the Amazon Kindle Self-Publishing site, plus Goodreads, plus the other sites that are mentioned and it is interesting to read a bit on how it works. However, it did seem to take over a bit. The ending, as has already been mentioned in other reviews, does seem a bit rushed. You have 99% of the book with problems and situations and then *snap of the fingers* it's sorted.

On the whole though, this is an enjoyable book that you can curl up with for a winter read that you don't expect too much depth from.

While Snowbound by Anna J. McIntyre
Brady Gates is one of the rich and famous. A rock star. After yet another wacko fan has found a way into his private rooms he decides he needs to get away. His trusted bodyguard sets him up with a secluded cabin. He escapes unnoticed and everything seems to be going as planned. Until the snowstorm.

Ella Lewis is headed up to her cabin to get some writing done. With no Internet or outside intrusions it's the best place for her to concentrate. She didn't plan on finding the only other cabin occupant stranded, and half frozen. And with this storm it looked like she'd be stuck with the ego maniac for a while.

Ella had no clue who Brady was until her friend told her he'd be staying there. Brady couldn't believe any living person didn't know who he was. And that the first woman he might actually want to chase him has no interest in doing so.

My Thoughts...

I was busy for the last two and a half weeks crocheting an afghan for a friend. I finished it yesterday and just wanted some "Mind Candy" that would be a quick little light fluffy chick-lit book to read. This book fit the bill, certainly not much substance, but it was sweet and entertained me, and brought me down from my crocheting high. I could finally kick back and relax, doing what I most enjoy...reading.

Before I started reading the book I wasn't sure whether I would finish the book or not, because if it turned into an "R" rated steamy romance I wouldn't have finished it. Gladly it was anything but, when something did happen it was "PG" the kind of sweet story to curl up with on a cold afternoon. It was a "Sweet Cotton-Candy Mind" kind of reading. However I enjoyed it enough to award it 3 candy stars.

*ARR (Advance Reader Review) - copy provided as a gift in exchange for an honest review...

The cover is ok - the colours matched the theme and the image is sweet.
The Characters are pretty good, not overly strong but well described. It would have been nice to have more history for both of them and gone a little bit deeper.
The story was nice, different. I liked the way the 2 characters had their issues and how they came around. It was a nice little story. Not something deep and serious but a fluffy read you would pick up while on holiday.
I didn't like how the ending seemed so rushed. It was like we went from 2 - 10 in 3 seconds. There was potential for so much more.
The Writing Style was good and very easy to follow and read through. It was a nice easy read.

I would recommend this book to anyone - it is a sweet little romantic love story..

I enjoyed that this rock star book didn't have a heroine going star crazy over the hero. This was a sweet little romance and showed feelings developing over time. I found it refreshing that there was no love at first sight and it felt very real. Until the end, which was rushed, and basically felt like a cliff notes version of what came next. There was no real "fix" to what happened between them. I mean, if a man disappeared on me, I wouldn't just welcome him back with open arms. The other thing that bothered me was how in depth the author went into explaining the indie author process. I have to say, if I wasn't an author, I would have most likely rolled my eyes and skipped past the long winded description of the sites and processes. It was boring, and I felt it took away from the story a little bit.

This isn't a horrible book, it just definitely needs some work.

Author Ella Lewis just wants to spend a month in her family's mountain cabin so she can finish her latest romance novel in peace. But while driving to the cabin in a snowstorm, Ella finds a man half frozen and wearing a yellow wig, stumbling along the road. Rock Star Brady Gates has been trying to escape the paparazzi and rabid fans. He didn't expect to get stuck in the snow on his way to a mountain retreat. He also didn't plan on spending the week stuck in a cabin with the only woman in the world who doesn't seem to recognize him immediately.

This was a cute contemporary romance. Brady starts off acting like a spoiled jerk, but quickly redeems himself. It was a cute, light read that kept me entertained. My rating: 3.5 Stars.
