I actually really enjoyed this volume because it delivered exactly what I was asking for.

We finally got the backstories on all three leads, and honestly, it makes everything click in my mind about why they feel this desperate need to be wanted and loved. The volume does a good job of unpacking the trauma that's driving their behavior, making it easier to understand why they resort to such terrible, sometimes genuinely shitty things. It’s clear that their actions aren't born of malice, but of pure, profound loneliness. This volume really nails the idea that desperation and a lack of connection can make you do a whole lot of messed-up things.

The tension and complexity kept me hooked, but the ending left me with some mixed feelings. While I'm super eager to see where the story goes next, the final pages give this fleeting sense that the characters might be regressing back into their familiar, painful cycles, which is a little frustrating. But there’s also a strong, hopeful undercurrent that the dynamic is shifting. It feels like the focus is moving past pure romantic conquest, hinting that maybe a new kind of love is happening, a healthier one built on friendship. I'm ready to watch this messy development unfold and see if they can finally find some genuine peace. (But doubt it lol)

[CW: Animal death]

We see the reality of this cheating situation more plainly here than in any other volume - Yuni is an important part of Nanase’s life, but Yuni is Fuuko’s entire world. Healthy or not, it resonates with Yuni.

Now, is Yuni insane to agree to meet Fuuko? Yes. Is she clearly not making safe choices when they see that movie? Oh yeah. And they choose to sit in the back? There’s asking for trouble and then there’s practically demanding it.

Yet it makes sense. Everything revealed in this volume connects the dots in a way that may not justify yet another betrayal of trust, but definitely explains exactly why it happens.

Fuuko is broken in so many ways and, not surprisingly, it stems wholly from a godawful home life where she lost the one good person and had all of her hopes and dreams crushed under the weight of expectations and demands of excellence.

Crucially, when Fuuko reaches out to Yuni this time, there’s definitely the sense that this is not the same Fuuko who caused all this trouble for the first time. Oh, her feelings haven’t changed - we learn just how long Fuuko has had a thing for Yuni - but she’s changing as a person.

And it’s still trouble, either way. The issue here is that Yuni and Nanase are not overly compatible people. You can see their attraction, but they both have distractions they can’t get around. Yuni’s is the more problematic, but it’s there for Nanase as well.

Plus, it seems very likely that Nanase’s best friend wants to be a little more than friends and it isn’t a secret that those two get along better than Yuni and Nanase do. The line between love and friendship can certainly blur and does so here.

I’ve had many volumes of this where I admit how wonderfully trashy it is, but it dials that down into some actual drama this time and it’s remarkably better for it. Oh, it has high trash drama too, you can tell the second Nanase asks that that earring of Yuni’s has gone nowhere, but the balance makes it better.

Fuuko’s complicated feelings about seeing her first love breastfeeding, for example, are something I never would have expected this to tackle with any sort of sensitivity. Yet it’s Fuuko really being honest and learning about herself in surprising ways.

(We’ll table that weird mom line until next time, but that does raise some alarm bells.)

Fuuko’s crappy home life is neatly contrasted with Yuni, who has a stereotypical booze-forward mother, but a great and understanding one. I loved their friendly relationship and the way her mom really comes through with solid advice.

There’s even a lot of great imagery of moving people in this volume and it focuses on how Fuuko and Yuni are feeling cast off or left behind. It’s not hard to see why they end up finding one another again.

Obviously, you’re not reading this if you can’t handle an adulterous story. But, fair warning, it’s happening again. Yuni makes choices that she probably shouldn’t, but, like I said, they’re believable.

Honestly, the one thing she should clearly be doing is breaking it off with Nanase. Beyond the irreparable damage to Nanase’s trust when this comes out (and don’t think it won’t), it’s clear that this isn’t an equally satisfying relationship for them both and there’s no way to solve it because they both want different things.

4 stars - yep, the best volume to date, really. It makes some real characters out of these, well, characters and makes their choices come from a believable place. Great work all around.

The protagonist and her girlfriend return to each other, and a seemingly happy, peaceful everyday life is restored. And yet…

After delving into each character’s childhood memories and personal backgrounds, the story once again ends with the protagonist drawing closer to the “affair” partner.
All three characters come across as fundamentally sincere, and at this point the story feels less about infidelity and more about carefully depicting the emotions that arise when someone realizes they may love another person more deeply.

Someone is bound to be hurt, and someone will surely end up grieving. Still, there are hints that the situation might resolve itself in a way that isn’t entirely tragic, suggesting that the story is not completely without hope.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again this series is compete and total trash. Messy trash to be precise, which is not always a bad thing. It’s a very fast read which is great. My biggest problem with this series continues to be Yuni. She is terrible and not terrible in a fun way just terrible. She is taking all of the fun out of this series. Shes constantly whining and acting like she’s a victim and it’s honestly grating. I will be cheering when Nanase finally is done with her. And the mom talk at the end creeped me out. It’s not cute and it’s not sexy. It left such a bad taste in my mouth it lowered my rating to a 2.

highkey feels like a filler volume (because it lacked the usual dumpster fire of dramas ofc) but i really enjoyed learning background info on the characters and their families. the context really does help build them as characters even if it’s kind of late in the game

I am writing this having read volumes 1-6. This whole manga is trash, objectively, but in a very intentional way that is exactly what some people will want. It is an absolute drama-fest full of cheating and lying and manipulation, toxic people and relationships, and unrealistic everything. Most of the people in this manga are terrible people except for one who is an idiot, and one who (so far) seems to be a normal nice person who is caught up in the drama. So, if you want a drama full of toxic people then this is probably a good fit; if you want something realistic, romantic, or wholesome, then keep walking. Sometimes you just want to watch the dumpster fire, and there isn’t anything wrong with that! Oh, and the art is well done.

Rating manga volumes is hard; not a lot happens in each one after all as they are only a piece of the story. 4-star rating is based on the assumption that you want to read a toxic mess of a story. Withholding the last star because this is very unrealistic; I can’t follow the characters motivation other than “this is what we want to happen in the story”.

Volume 5 is where we get surprised with the most realistic plotline and emotions (if you can buy-into everything up until now) of the series so far. It's also where you want to yell at the protagonist and pull our your hair while reading.
