Located on the east side of Tokyo, overlooking the old, destroyed radio tower, Café LycoReco is a stylish and delicious place to relax. And this is a story depicting the everyday, extraordinary life of the charming staff that work there. Irresistible sweets, gun action, incredible games, heartwarming dramas, zombies and monsters...and a touch of love!? Of course, you can’t forget the coffee!
I rushed to finish this book before today's episode (episode 12) released, and what a ride it was.
While the show itself focuses mainly on Chisato and Takina, the book lets them take a back seat and chooses to focus on the impact Chisato and Takina have on the lives of others, but Chisato and Takina get their own spotlight chapters, which is a really nice balance.
Like Asaura mentions in the afterword, there's a bit of everything here - fluffy slice of life, action sequences, Lycoris loredump, downright dark and depressing stuff, and, especially, lots and lots of food. There was so much description about food I kinda went lol; I hear this is a given in Asaura books though.
So we are introduced to a bunch of new characters (all of whom become regulars of LycoReco over the course of the book/are already regulars). All the stories kind of take place over the same timeline and we see the points of view of different characters at different points, which was really fun and adds to the atmosphere the book is trying to create. I especially loved the character interactions; I felt like Kurumi steals the show in any scene she is in lol. Overall, I think it would have been nice to see more of the main cast itself, but I guess that wouldn't have been possible in this book's format.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys LycoReco.

I was promised yuri. Safe to say I was sorely disappointed.
The relationship between Chisato and Takina took a backseat here, while the novel chose to tell the stories of cafe regulars instead. A bold choice, certainly. I couldn't find it in myself to care for or sympathise with any of the side characters, and they didn't interest me in the slightest. They were all uninteresting and pervy in some way, except Kana, who was also uninteresting, just that she had trauma. Was expecting light-hearted romance. Kana's backstory was so much darker than I expected, and every second of reading the part of the book from her perspective was truly agonising and unbearable. TW for sexual assault in the book. I was not mentally prepared for it, so it was very jarring for me.
The only part of the novel I can see myself revisiting are the moments between Chisato and Takina, mainly the zombie bit. I quite liked hearing the voice of an otherwise emotionally repressed Takina, and seeing her true feelings for Chisato and her more wishful side brought to light. Very cute.
Oh, and the writing is absolute ass. Bought this thinking it was a manga. Ended up with a shitty novel instead. I think reading this might've single-handedly made me dumber. Illustrations were gorgeous, though! Squealed a lil at the one of Chisato feeding Takina and the one where they were lying down in their futons!! I love yuri!!
As a fan of the anime, I was expecting light hearted, cheery fun here, some slice-of-life days, maybe a serious moment or two, and a bit of action here and there. That described a decent of it, but...
The first third of the book was Chistato trying to set Takina up with some retirement-aged guy because she thinks her partner has the hots for him. That was kind of a weird focus, but whatever. It's played for laughs.
The second big story was a fun 'what if' zombie apocalypse run.
...but that 3rd big story... I feel like it went a little too grimdark before pulling a basically off-page "and everything will basically work out fine now" sorta deal at the very end.
I don't really feel like it handled the themes it was trying to juggle with the right level of gravity or resolution, and I don't know how to describe it other than the plot really did not fit the tone I'd expect from the series.
...If I had a nickel for every person who decided to get 'forcefully handsy' with the Jr. High POV character in that story, I'd have arguably 5 or 6 nickels, and at many of those would have been collected from characters who are not even part of the same scenes. The implications are freaking *dark*, and the resolution is somewhat handwaved, IMO.
It's not badly written, or guilty of any major crimes against writing, or anything. Just tonally weird.
Maybe I just had the wrong expectations going into this one.
so funn, really talks about the dynamics and everyday life of cafe LycoReco, the staffs, and the customers. overall it's so warm and cozy and makes me wanna try and go there myself. the customers also have such interesting diversive characters that makes us eager to know what's next. chisato shines so perfectly as she should. but everyone took part too!!
but honestly, it got me into a massive reading slump (for months??) because of the zombie part T____T idk it's just really hard to process everything there is just so confusing... but finally, once i finished that chapter i read it so fast i finished it in one sitting. i love loveee how it progressed to the ending!! it turned deep so suddenly and i really like how it's resolved, yeayy!!
