A handsome prince declaring his undying love for you at a grand ball―it’s what every girl dreams of...but not Melissa Foddebrat! She knows that behind his charming smile, Ian is an insufferable, womanizing manchild. She is desperately searching for a way to dump him before he publicly announces their marriage. That’s when she spots a mysterious beggar collapsed on the street, and a devilish plot begins to take shape...
If you are like me and loathe romance tropes/abusive males in most manwhas then this one is for you. It’s smart and funny while pointing out all the disgusting tropes that permeate the genre. The heroine has agency and a backbone, and while she gets a male partner later, her problems aren’t fixed by him.
Melissa is taking the story and breaking it down satirically. She’s done with all of the typical otome/isekai males LIs bullshit. The original heroine of the novel is also not villanized like in so many Isekais. Melissa is a girl's girl, and she's here to put the awful male character in their place.
The main character is finally getting her stride and becoming likeable. I'm enjoying the non canon characters more than the "book's" main cast. The love interests are all terrible and it is a relief to see the "heroin" tends to agree.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS!!! Melissa is a freaking badass queen and Nine is sooooooo damn adorable. Loved the story...AND ALL THE OTHER CHARACTERS... Yuri was amazing and plz DONOT get me started on Yona (adore that lady)... the redemption arc that all the male leads go through (so proud of their character development) & SERIOUSLY GUYS!! I CANNOT B THE ONLY ONE WHO FINDS MIGEN INSANELY HOT!! (*sigh* villains, I tell you). AND THAT ENDING *sob*. ANYWAYS, i think you can tell that I loved this.
Read digitally and I plan to pick up the print copy when it's released later this month.
Loving this series!
I love Melissa as a main character. She's so badass, strong, and it's so much fun reading her inner monologues. I love that she decides to help the heroine of the story because a lot of other comics would've made her into a mean girl and this would've been another story painting women as catty. The writing of the men makes me hope this ends with women supporting women against the shitty men, but I'll wait to see how it all ends. I'm glad I can read this digitally, but also grateful more publishers are publishing manhwas in print these days.
Nine is adorable! I love all of his interactions with Melissa. I was also surprised by how much I love Yuri interacting with Melissa, as well. Can't wait to continue on!
I'm sad the story is already over but it's nice that it wasn't dragged out either. It wasn't some perfect ending which also I feel like goes along with her being someone who is completely breaking a story. There were a lot of twists and surprises that continued to set this apart from others in the genre. Definitely the sort of story I'd enjoy reading again and again.
This is hysterical! Melissa has such an odd life, bust she is determined to be the best villainess, not realizing how quickly she is becoming the heroine. I hope her and Nine’s relationship grows for the better!
The comedy is beginning to hit a lot better and more consistently in this volume! Nine is such a cutie, and I'm so excited to see more of Yona she was always so funny.
I don’t understand how I’m unable to read my own story. In the first place, a story isn’t just for reading. All of this was my story. At last, the novel’s plot is over.
Melissa has a plan to humiliate her cheating fiance---take another man to the ball. But her perfect revenge hits an unexpected snag, leaving her confused and upset. Not that she's down for long. A new challenger approaches, and she's out to prove she's not going to get stepped on by another trashy man.
If the first volume was mostly about Melissa, this one is largely focused on Nine. The homeless young man Melissa picked up for her revenge scheme isn't just some cardboard cutout character that she can manipulate at will. He's got a past---and that shows up to wreck Melissa's best-laid plans.
This also brings up Jack, the werewolf love interest from the original story. He's loud, aggressive, violent---the literal "wild child" pick from the original cast. Jack only respects strength, something Melissa finds herself lacking.
I love what Melissa does with this. She's not content to attempt to convince one of the other characters to stand up for her. She instead takes steps to learn how to defend herself (and also steals an endgame weapon to make her life a little easier). This way, the next time Jack shows up, she's got some bite to go with her bark.
There's also a fantastic look at who the original Melissa was, and how she became the person she was in the book. The deeply insecure child is now a much more confident young woman, and that alone will change everything for both of them.
And we also meet Yuri, the original female lead. I love that there are already plenty of hints that the version of her that Melissa is expecting really isn't how she is.
Overall this second volume is a strong one. We're introduced to more of the cast, their histories, and their conflicts. Melissa is taking charge of her life in a much better way, and although the original story seems to have a strong grip on things, she's got plenty of determination to make things work out. Highly Recommended.

"What is a female lead? The saviour of male characters? A philanthropist? Someone who accepts the male lead's obsession and madness in the name of love?"
Comedy Drama manhwa/ webtoon Gaslamp Fantasy Otome isegye/ isekai/ portal fantasy Modern time Korean woman is transported into a romantasy novel as the "villainess" Proceeds to do what she wants and becomes the hero 🤺 Parody of the genre Challenges trashy, toxic and creepy behaviour that gets romanticised or excused The male leads are the worst Save the og heroine from being chained to dumpster fire! Melissa is a girl's girl through and through Werewolves & Mages Role stereotype reversal Lovely art
I am really into transmigrator stories. Haven't many of us readers imagined going into one of our beloved stories? Sometimes as ourselves, sometimes as natives of this other world, living adventures, meeting characters, fixing wrongs? As readers, we'd have valuable knowledge that could change the plot! Somehow along the way, east Asian writers started making fiction exploring exactly this premise 😍
Beware the Villainess! really stands out! It provides much needed satire to not only the transmigration subgenre, but to romance fantasy. Even when it is not openly criticising the many flaws of these types of stories, it provides certain parts of the plot fully tongue-in-cheek aware of exactly what it is doing.
It was my first experience with such a story in the subgenre, and therefore refreshing. Yet, although it starts a conversation and has an interesting FMC who forges her own (grey moral) heroic path, the story itself is not without its own shortcomings.
The author did a disservice to most side characters, and to Yuri, the og heroine and deuteragonist of BtV. She had an interesting plotline that could've been further explored and concluded. She's full of potential but at some point she just seems like a tool. She deserved better and happiness.
I like this one better then the first one. She is changing as a person and because she wants others to value her and she wants to protect others. She is prepared to do the work. She wants the servants to be safe. She met Yuri and knows she will be with the prince in the end but still she doesn't wish her ill. She say a beggar and she saw an opportunity. Now she knows Nine she tries to help him. She cares for others, even her brother who barely cares for her at all and the staffs wages... I'm curious if she can bring everyone together instead to drive them apart.
4.5 stars The plot is starting to cook, and I'm starting to get a girl crush on Melissa!! My queen is doing everyone a favor by knocking the future king down a peg.
It's very refreshing to see Nine, who is set up to be a future love interest for Melissa, not fall into the stereotypical persona for a ML. Nine is gentle, wears his emotions on his sleeve, and doesn't use his trauma as an excuse for mental or physical abuse. Is the bar in hell? Maybe, but Nine is a sweetheart, and I love to see it.
I love this series so much!!!!!!! It’s been an absolute delight rereading. Cannot recommend this series enough to anyone who likes Isekai, especially Villainess Isekai/Regression stories.
(Shelved as Queer because Yuri is 100% in love with Melissa)
Melissa is a 10/10 character she is so expressive and funny. I love her drive to live a life of her own. Nine is such a cutie but he is a bit of a crybaby.
