A Manual on Exorcism

Rate this book
Freedom from evil spirits is one of the blessings purchased for us at Calvary by the Lord Jesus. H. A. Maxwell Whyte discusses forty-five questions about demons and how they can be defeated. He provides clear, helpful explanations that will make sense to anyone searching for the truth about demons and exorcism. Table Of Contents Question 1 What is a demon? Demons are wicked spirits The word "demon" comes from the Greek daimon, which means "an evil spirit." "Daimon," in turn, comes from a root which means "a shadow." Satan, the supreme commander of gill demons, sends these evil spirits upon people and they bring shadows- darkness over the spirit of man. Anyone who cannot believe in spirits will certainly have trouble accepting the biblical teaching about God. Right from the beginning of Genesis, we find that there am personal spirits. First, the Spirit of God Himself moved upon the face of the waters (Genesis 1:2). The same Spirit was breathed into lifeless Adam, and he become a living soul (Genesis 2:7). These, and Many other references to the Spirit (or breath) of God, obviously refer to a personal Being. And if the Spirit of God is a personal Being, then so are all other spirits. It might surprise some to know that demons are actually fallen angels. Revelation 12:4-9 teaches us that one third of all the angels were expelled from heaven because of the original rebellion of Satan against Jesus Christ. These angels joined with Satan in his rebellion, and were cast out into the earth as disembodied demons. And they are still here-whether we believe in them or not!

H.A. Maxwell Whyte (1908–1988) embarked on a journey in ministry that was fraught with uncertainty and an absence of familiar landmarks when he was sovereignly led by the Holy Spirit into an understanding of demonic activity and spiritual warfare. As is so often the case with pioneers, he was misunderstood, ridiculed, and ostracized by the Christian community, even in his own city of Toronto. Despite great opposition, he forged ahead in the battle against the forces of Satan, convinced that the ministry of deliverance was scripturally based and was being restored to the church. Later, he began to record his experiences, and over the next two–and–a–half decades, he authored eighteen books. His first book, The Power of the Blood, has been translated into several languages and is widely distributed throughout the world, selling over 500,000 copies internationally.

In the 1960s and 70s, the ministry of deliverance was once again restored to the Church (it never went away, but had diminished for most of the last 200 years). Deliverance ministers such as Maxwell Whyte, Don Basham, and Derek Prince, among many others, blazed the trail back into carrying out the commandment of Jesus that all Christians are supposed to "cast out devils" (Mark 16:17). I love the books that these pioneers wrote during this restoration of deliverance to the church. Like this one, they are fresh, filled with wisdom and knowledge, and often document the mistakes they made as well. Maxwell Whyte's "A Manual on Exorcism" is presented in a format of what we would today call a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions). This book lists 43 FAQs along with Pastor Whyte's insightful answers. He also divides these questions in 5 basic categories, including: Introductory Questions; Demons and Christians; Kinds of Demons; The Ministry of Exorcism; and Objections to Exorcism.
