Darkness is covering the land. As the city of Mezrah grows with power and greed, the rest of the world can only stand by and wait for their inevitable destruction. The only hope against this growing power is an ancient prophecy that people have stopped believing in.
Then a star begins to fall.
Princess Kyla of Taramon stopped believing in the power of light the day her father died. Trapped in a city she does not care for, under the watchful glare of her mother, the queen, she struggles to accept her fate.
Then a star begins to fall.
Jethro has loved Kyla for as long as he can remember. Learning that she was to marry his cousin drove a wedge between him and the feisty princess. Watching her from a distance is a torture he is unable to free himself from.
Then a star begins to fall, sparking an ember of hope and sending two seekers on a treacherous journey into the unknown.

Unknown (The Elements Trilogy Book 1) is written by Melissa Pearl, and it was one of those books that I simply couldn’t put down. I didn’t realize how long it had been since I read such an enjoyable story with fantastic flow. Melissa created amazing characters and a wonderful storyline with great landscapes to set the scene.
Unknown is a story about darkness and light. Darkness has been taking over the world after the God of Light (Oron) defeated the Ruler of Darkness Kohlac. Initially, there was prosperity and peace, but at the time of the book, a ruler named Ashan has been bringing poverty, hopelessness, and darkness back into the world.
Few remember the prophecy (that is not allowed to be spoken of), which states, “Do not be afraid. I have not abandoned you. A time will come when darkness can no longer rule. Look for a diamond glowing in the north; though it falls, it will not fail, for from its ashes, two seekers will arise. Through earth, water, wind and fire I will be found. Even the smallest flame can shine in the black of night, and the darkness cannot extinguish it. Even the smallest flame can ignite a fire that will burn with fury from one generation to the next.” The book revolves around this prophecy and in the attempt to try to decipher and to follow it.
The main characters that tell the story are: Mordekai, a seer whose life is forfeit for repeating the prophesy and in trying to help it go into motion. Kyla, the princess of Tamaron, is a fiery-spirited 16-year-old girl. Jethro, the best friend of Kyla growing up was born on the same day. Ashan the bringer of hopelessness and servitude. Athra, the betrothed of princess Kyla and her polar opposite. There are a few other points of view to help give the story an all-encompassing view of what is going on in different places.
I loved the characters (I know I already said that). Melissa did an excellent job giving us characters to love and hope for, ones to hate and others to try to understand. We get to follow along on a journey that will change them all. The story has the feel of an spic saga and left me at a cliffhanger, craving more of the unfinished tale.
I loved this book and give it a 5/5 stars. I highly recommend it and if you are into fantasy, sweeping sagas, empowering heroines, trials in life, young adult, romance, you will enjoy this start to a series that Melissa has begun.
I received Unknown at no cost in return for an honest review from the author Melissa Pearl no way did it influence my review. Mordekai know one day he would see the diamond glowing in the northern sky. He springs into action by picking up Nikara the injured girl he had found on his doorstep and took her in. Mordekai believing that the prophecy is coming to pass takes the pair out of Mezrah following the star to Tamamon. Where he believes the two seekers will find the elementals that will lead to Oron.
The seekers in the story are Princess Kyla and Jethro they grew up together, born on the same day. Kyla is unlike most princesses she detests everything her mother expects out of her, instead putting on her brothers clothes to sneak out of the castle. Her city has protection from Mezrah but the guards are taking liberties with the farmers and she doesn’t feel that the treaty is working. Kyla life hasn’t been easy her father as well as her four brothers didn't come home from the battle against Mezrah. When the diamond fell from the sky both Jethro and Kyla touch the stone each experiencing a strong reaction while others were just fine.
Mordekai inspects both Jethro and Kyla finding they each have two symbols etched in their arms for the elementals. It’s decided that the only way to bring the light back and banish the darkness is for the seekers to find Oron so Kyla and Jethro set out on their quest. Kyla is betrothed to Jethro’s cousin causing a rift between the pair but the quest will give them a chance to work on it. They are joined on their quest by a little boy named Adamar who is the earth elemental. Along the way they encounter all kinds of dangers from dragonflies that lead them to the door of the water elemental Mya. However darkness is hovering over Tamamon because as they seek the elementals there are those hoping to capture them and stop the rise of Oron.
I’ve not read a lot of fantasy in the past but it’s quickly becoming my new favorite genre. Unknown reminds me of Lord of the Rings or maybe Dungeons and Dragons which I really enjoyed. I found the story captivating it’s an action packed adventure from start to finish that kept me on the edge of my seat filled with mystery and intrigue. I also found Unknown to be well written it’s the kind of story that draws you is that you can visualize what the characters are seeing. I love Kyla she’s not your typical princess which is why I found her so exciting. I love a kick-ass-girl and she fits the bill well. I’m not sure how I feel about her future husband because I really also liked Jethro because he’s been in love with her forever. I look forward to the next chapter I want more.
Okay, I’m going to start out this review by saying this: I am not a fantasy reader. For some reason, although the idea behind a fantasy book seems so fascinating and interesting, I just have not ever truly read enough good ones to really consider myself a person that enjoys fantasy. I saw the author looking for folks to review this ARC, and part of me was just wanting to scroll past it. I’m curious by nature, so I clicked the link, checked out the blurb, and decided, what the hell? I read a book a day (at least), so it’s not like it’s really going to take much of my time if it disappoints me as much as most of the other fantasy books I’ve read.
I have to say. Wow. I wasn’t even completely done with the book before I emailed the author with about six OMGs. This book is absolutely amazing. It’s made me second guess my ideals that fantasy books are normally terrible for me. The author created such a realistic and believable world, that I was unable to put the book down. I felt like I was right there with the characters, going on the journey of a lifetime.
My main beef with fantasy has always been that although I understand that the keyword is “fantasy,” the characters are just beyond unrealistic. This was definitely not the case here. Completely realistic characters living in a completely fantasy world with mystical creatures and magic. I was completely blown away. The Queen? I couldn’t help but want to hug her and hit her at the same time. As a mother myself, she was a completely realistic mother, with completely realistic issues with her daughter going on a dangerous quest. I couldn’t help but love (or hate, in some circumstances) the characters portrayed. They leapt off the page and dragged me with them while they were working their way through the dangerous deserts and forests. I don’t want to give much away, but I honestly can say that I feel sorry for EVERYONE in the fact that this book isn’t out yet, so y’all can’t read it yet.
This is a new author for me, and I’m thrilled that I found her. I hope she’s a fast writer, because I want book two NOW!
** I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review **
This book started off some what slow for me but as the pace picked up I quickly found that I fell in love with the plot and characters. I love the idea of an epic quest as long as it is adventurous and not just boring which “Unknown” had no problems with. It didn’t drag at all and kept my attention to the end. Once I really got absorbed into the pages I had the same feeling I got when I read “Lord of the Rings”. Like OMG what is going to happen next.
At points I even forget that the characters are teenagers. Pearl has done an amazing job of making them so vivid and real. There are some moments of tension like any good adventure would have and since this is a fantasy saga least I not forget the mystical. Did I mention Spy’s? Yes even magic, a Dark Lord and Trolls just to name a few.
At one point I felt like screaming NO not a love triangle. They are to over done. Please don’t do this. But thankfully what I thought was going to be love triangle twisted into unrequited love with the hint of something more.
The one and only thing that I was disappointed in was the ending. It doesn’t leave you with a cliff hanger it just ends abruptly in the middle of the quest. However with that being said it seems as if part two will be released with in just a few short months so I guess I can be patient. But it better be quick since I am hopelessly dying to know what happens next.
This book started out slow for me but once i got into it grabbed my attention.I enjoyed reading about the adventures of Jethro and Kyla. This author sure knows how to get the readers attention and tell a great story. I'm looking forward to her next book in the trilogy. If you enjoy adventure and some romance you are sure to enjoy this book !!
Unknown by Melissa Pearl is the first book in the Elements trilogy and was kindly provided to me by the author in exchange for my honest review.
The story follows sixteen year-old Princess Kyla of Taramon, a character who isn't so keen on following the rules when it comes to her privileged role so is quite the stubborn heroine which I quite liked. She is snarky, strong-minded and kick-butt but she is also fiercely loyal.
When a sign is received hinting of a forbidden prophecy which has shown the possibility of breaking Ashan, the dark rulers reign, two seekers are chosen - Kyla and her former best friend Jethro to embark on a dangerous mission to save the world from looming darkness so they seek to find the missing elements.
Jethro has been in love with Kyla unbeknownst to her for a very long time but she is betrothed to his cousin Athra so he has distanced himself away from her, he was a bit of an ass to her initially but I came to enjoy their interactions, the bond they shared and the small hints that his feelings could possibly be reciprocated, I liked them as a couple but their situation isn’t going to be an easy one.
Each of the characters are developed well, they don’t come across as teenagers which I quite liked and the secondary cast all played a pivotal part in the overall story. I especially liked Adamar and Mya; who were definitely a surprise and both with great knowledge and I respected Queen Elaina's decisions to protect her only daughter, her reactions were believable. of course, we also get the villains who were written extremely well.
Fantasy isn't a genre I read often but I absolutely adored the magic, mystical creatures and secrets within Unknown and with the sweet, budding romance that left me swooning thrown in leaving me wanting more, I was definitely engrossed in Melissa Pearls storytelling.
I enjoyed the world-building and captivating plot from the onset, I was fascinated by the prophecy, differing lands and the reasoning behind why a treaty was required although I’m looking forward to finding out more in the next installment; I was eager to see the outcome of Kyla and Jethro quest and the dangerous trip they had to undertake to find the elements and was surprised by the twist of what they were; it was a page turner that is beautifully written with a vividly detailed setting.
Unknown is very different from Melissa Pearl’s contemporary YA novel, Betwixt; her writing has developed vastly and it shows her ability to write a variety of genres with ease.
My only small gripe was in the initial stages of Unknown, the pacing for me was slow so it took me a little while to get into but once it took off it was one big thrill ride and I was completely absorbed; also it ended quite abruptly so I am definitely keen to read the next book which has a July release date.
Overall, I loved the fantasy world that Melissa Pearl has created with Unknown. It is a book filled with magic, mayhem, action and romance; I can’t wait to get hold of the next book in the series, Unseen.
Kyla is bored of being a princess; she'd much rather run around in the woods with her best friend, Jethro than learn how to rule the kingdom and become queen. Jethro is fighting his affections for Kyla, learning that she is to marry Athra, his cousin, he finds himself avoiding Kyla as much as possible. Then, two strangers wander into the city of Taramon, claiming that an ancient prophecy, supposedly written by Oron, the god, is coming true. Meanwhile, the city of Mezrah is growing in power under it's king, Ashan.
Unknown was a great fantasy full of unpredictable characters, romance, and sword fights. I admit, Kyla kind of annoyed me at times, mostly because it's obvious why Jethro's ignoring her, but she's oblivious. Nevertheless, she's still a rough-n-tough, honest character who was interesting to read about. I also liked Jethro, even though he's kind of thick-headed. I wondered why he didn't get things that were so obvious, but he's still a sweetie pie.
I loved the twists and turns that Melissa threw out. Sometimes, I admit, I did see it coming, but there were things that were just so BAM that I wanted to tell someone. {alas, no one would feel the way I did about it...} I must say, that the writing is probably the best thing about this book. It kept me hooked, even though I predicted some things, I just had to turn the page and read ONE more chapter. I was so surprised when it ended, and I was kind of disappointed that there was no more left to read.
It was kind of confusing how they changed perspective all the time, but I could still keep up, and it was interesting to read what was going on back in Taramon or Mezrah while you're in the middle of the desert on another page.
One thing I did not like was the love triangle. They just anger me so. I know most books have them, and I've learned to accept that, but it doesn't mean I enjoy reading about it! I like books where the romance might be complicated, but at least there's no competition! Plus, you normally know who she's going to end up with anyway...ugh. And someone's heart is going to be broken. -.-
Overall, I loved reading Unknown! I was drawn into the fantasy world, and devoured every page, reading long into the night. I can't wait for Unseen, the next installment of The Elements Trilogy! I must know what happens next!
I must say, this was a hard one to rate! Thank you Melissa for the review copy!
I had the privilege of reading an advanced copy of this book - and ladies and gentlemen - you are in for a fantasy treat!
Epic fantasy is a tough genre to write in, and Melissa Pearl launches into it with a flying leap with this series. When I was send an advanced reading copy of this book, I was interested in the fact that Melissa had leapt out of the Urban Fantasy / Paranormal, and into the Epic realm, and I was pleasantly surprised.
I’m a total sucker for ass-kicking heroines, and Kyla meets my expectations in every possible way. Kyla is stubborn, lovable, and has a few flaws to boot. She’s engaged to be married to Athra, but is thrown into a life-threatening quest in order to save the world from imminent darkness – with a gorgeous man who is in love with her.
Wow. If that’s not a recipe for disaster, I don’t know what is.
The first book of this trilogy focuses on the first part of the quest to find the Elements in order to help Jethro and Kyla defeat the darkness. No one knows how this prophecy is going to play out, or even what Jethro and Kyla are supposed to be doing. So while they have a little guidance, most of their journey is about themselves discovering more and more about who they are, each other, and the path that they have been thrown on.
It’s a great fast read, and even if you’re not an avid fantasy reader – pick it up. There is so many parallels in this book that we all face in humanity. You won’t be disappointed.
I’m going to rate the first book of this series as 4 stars… because I can’t wait to get my nose into book two and three to find out what happens in the rest of the story. I have no doubt that on balance, this trilogy is probably going to be a five star read.
If you want to purchase a copy of this book – you can find it on Amazon or Smashwords.
***I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review***
Thanks to Netgalley and Indie Inked for giving me this book to review.
With darkness spreading over the world, as King Ashan’s growing greed for power; it seems that the light will never return. However, there is a prophecy that when a diamond falls in the north, the god Oron will return and bring the light with him. In Tamamon, princess Kyla and Jethro were best friends and were even born on the same day, but time and Kyla getting engaged to Jethro’s cousin Ashra have created distance between them. But when a star falls next to the city and Kyla and Jethro have unusual reactions to touching it, they discover that they have to set out on a journey into the unknown to find the elements earth, water, air and fire to bring back light to the world.
I really liked Unknown as even though it is a bit predictable, it is a light, addictive YA fantasy book, and I could not put it down until I found out what happened next. Unknown is good as it has adventure, betrayal love and good fantasy world building.
I like Kyla as she is a feisty person who does not want to be a princess instead she wants to escape and have an adventure, I also can sympathise with her struggle to believe in the prophecy and Oron, because of the death of her father and brothers. I also really like Jethro as he acts realistically in his struggles with his feelings for Kyla, while at the same time respecting and not wanting to hurt his cousin. Pearl is really good at writing complex characters such as Ashra and Nikara, but my favourite secondary character is the queen as, while she is weak, she does care about her people and will do anything to protect them, but is still conflicted about how to deal with her daughter.
I will be reading the next book Unseen to find out what happens next to Kyla, Jethro and Ashra, and would recommend Unknown to fans of Slumber by Samantha Young or Broken Aro by Jen Wylie.
A star falls and the faith in a believed-to-be-dead deity and an old prophecy is resurrected. As soon as the sorcerer, Mordekai, sees the falling star, he and his apprentice, Nikara, leave Mezrah for the city of Taramon to search for the two seekers mentioned in the prophecy. Soon princess Kyla and her friend, Jethro, are off on a dangerous quest to bring back the light to their world. During this quest they face trolls, poisonous dragonflies and lots of trouble with the soldiers of king Ashan of Mezrah.
Unknown is one of those books I simply could not put down before I had devoured the very last word. Although the author takes the necessary time to develop the background, world and plot of this new series, I can honestly say that she keeps the story moving forward all the time. Moments of suspense and action are balanced by some laugh out loud incidents as well as descriptions of the characters having fun. The gentle touch of romance blends in with and enhances the story and is not at all in your face or overdone.
The characters, and especially so the main characters, are well crafted, believable and the kind that truly grows on the reader. They have to deal with authority, rebellion and moral conflict and living in a kind of medieval setting does not make that any different from what young people deal with today. As for king Ashan and his diplomat, Safeer; they are thoroughly nasty and easy to dislike. Sadly, in the best of situations, there are also the deceitful and those who are not what they seem to be.
This beautiful story about an old fashioned world and numerous magical people and creatures bears a lovely message about having faith in the unknown. I highly recommend it to readers of all ages and happily give this brilliant book five stars. (Ellen Fritz)

Already a fan of Melissa Pearl's Time Spirit Trilogy, I jumped at the chance to check out Unknown, the first of her new fantasy trilogy. Unknown starts off at a simmer, taking the time to set up the world and to introduce the characters. The intrigue is immediate though, as readers will find themselves curious to discover what the prophesy is all about and what role each character plays.
Princess Kyla is a likable and relatable character. A teenager who longs for adventure and is dissatisfied with the constraints of her gender. When we first meet her, she is sneaking around outside the palace walls dressed as a boy. These shenanigans do nothing to impress her mother or her betrothed; but Jethro, her lifelong friend, enjoys Kyla's spirit. Soon enough, though, Kyla gets her chance to set out on an epic adventure. As usual in fantasy, all is not as it seems. Kyla is more than just a princess and Jethro more than just an ordinary boy. They are both seekers, and the fate of the world may rest on their shoulders as they set out to locate The Elementals. The Elementals themselves are interesting, I was intrigued by them. While there are some familiar fantasy elements (trolls, dark forests, a long journey), The Elementals are a new addition to the fantasy world.
Unknown will appeal to fans of fantasy along the lines of The Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones. It starts of slow, building to an epic adventure with mystery and intrigue around every corner. It does fall victim to the abrupt ending that many series books seem to favor, so I'm hopeful book two will hit stores soon! Anyone looking for a fantasy fix should definitely check out this gem.
Melissa Pearl has produced yet another amazing adventure for readers of all ages to enjoy. Her new and thoroughly engrossing world, written with such beautiful imagery that you are transported right there, is a joy to read. You are watching the star fall, you are fighting feelings of confusion, loyalty, fear and love; Unknown sucks you right in.
Kyla and Jethro are great personable, passionate, stubborn characters to get to know. They have been thrown in to a quest that neither of them wants but neither can they deny the severity of its cause. And Unknown is such a fitting title because everything for these characters is – their lives, the lives of their loved ones, the world as they know it.
Unknown reminds me of the old Sinbad movies I used to love to watch as a kid; full of adventure, scary beasts, hunting for treasure - or in this case elements – and defeating evil. I loved this book and can’t wait to share this adventure with my (almost) teenager.
Unknown is un-put-downable with its fabulous world building and interweaving story arcs that point towards treacherous foes, underhanded enemies, and the possibility of forbidden love; an epic fantasy has begun.
Melissa Pearl has a golden touch because Unknown is another winner for me. 5 Stars ~<;]
(received an e-arc in exchange for an honest review)
Wow! Melissa Pearl has written such a great character in Princess Kyla of Taramon. She is such a strong-minded and kick arsed character. I liked her because she had such an attitude, and is loyal to a fault.
I have always enjoyed fantasy novels and this one does not disappoint. We have a forbidden prophecy which has Kyla and her friend Jethro going out in search of the missing elements.
I think Melissa Pearl has written a true winner in this first book in the series. The characters are not only believable but their responses to situations are so true to life, you will actually feel as if you know them.
I loved the magic and creatures which are of course a standard of all fantasy books. And the storytelling is tremendous. This is a definite must read! It will suck you in and not let you go to the last second.
This isn't my first novel by Melissa Pearl, I LOVED Betwixt but this book has trumped that book by far. Her skills in writing have increased exponentially. And I admire her for her skills in writing not just one genre but two very different ones.
I must say I can't wait to get my hands on book 2 and I hope that she gets it to me soon!
Details/Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book for free for my honest review. This free book held no determination on my final review.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
This book is exactly what a fantasy trilogy should be. Although the beginning was a little long (what it not a bad thing since it is a trilogy) it is a really fascinating and arousing book. The character in the beginning was confusing to me so it took me a little longer to get to know who is who (but the reason for that is that English is not my first language so it is not the authors fault). After I got to know the character more I could really sympathize with them, and there was not one chapter that had no unexpected happening. I really like how the author could write such an engrossing story with so many good ideas! I really appreciate that I had the chance to read and review the book. I would recommend it to anyone who like fantasy stories and who likes story about friendship, love, and life. The book really made me think about life. I don't want to say more you should definitely read it and make your own opinion. Thanks again to Melissa Pearl ;)
***I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review***
Starting off I was very intrigued, although it was slow going at first, once it picked up I was not disappointed. I feel the author did an excellent job in the plot if the story and giving me just enough mix of love, action, mystery, and magic. I was on the edge of my seat awaiting the next mythical beast that may pop up, I was also pleasantly surprised to discover how strong the "delicate princess" turned out to be. I can't wait to get my hands on book 2 and see what lies ahead for Kyla and Jethro, and see what happens in the relationship between the two of them. Over all this book has everything I love in a book, characters I love, characters I hate, deceit, love, prophecies, magic, mythical creatures. I have already recommend it to all my friends that read books.
I was gifted a copy of this book and really had no idea what to expect when I started reading it, but within the first few chapters I was completely engrossed in the story and kept turning page after page to find out what was going to happen next. Kyla is so full of life, and doesn’t let being a princess get in the way of having some fun. Jethro is sensitive and caring, and although he and Kyla were close growing up he’s been distant and they’ve grown apart, mainly due to the fact that Kyla is marrying his cousin. A fallen star sparks the start of a journey, where Kyla and Jethro could save their home from being taken over by the darkness. Full of action, adventure, fun and love, this book will leave you wanting to read the rest of the trilogy immediately.
When does the next one come out??? I really enjoyed reading this book. It does have a slow start but then is filled with all kinds of action packed craziness! We meet two seekers who travel in search of four elementals. In this book, we meet the earth and water representatives of the quest. I look forward to meeting the wind and fire ones in the next book. What you think is bad, is good and what you think is good, is bad. You'll know what I mean when you read this book. I also hope to see more of a romantic unfolding in the next book too!
I usually read while running the treadmill. And once I started this book, well, let's just say I got extra miles in because I completely lost track of time--the book is that consuming.
The pacing is spot-on. The writing is clean. And the characters... The Queen is completely believable with all of her conflicting emotions, responsibilities, and self-doubts. Jethro is a total hotie. Kyla--I want to be her. And Nikara. As much as I want to talk about her (she took me by complete surprise), I don't want to give anything away. Just read the book.
Okay, I admit it; I'm a Melissa Pearl fan. I'm also a die-hard fantasy lover. I adore anything with a historical note that involves swords and knives and bows and arrows. And a prophecy-plot with epic-quest is never wasted on me. A determined young hero with a sense of humor completes my wish list. A strong but not-overwhelming female heroine is icing on the cake.
So...if you liked Lord of the Rings but wished it had a shade more romance, you'll love Unknown.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Unknown is the first book in the elements trilogy. Kyla and Jethro both born on the same day same year they have been best friends since birth then one day that changes. A prophecy talks about two seekers will arise and bring the light back. Once the seekers are discovered they set out on an adventure with lots of ups and downs. I cannot wait to read the next one to see what happens will they make it and what will come out of the character twist.
Best book by Melissa Pearl yet! I absolutely loved the concept and was hooked from the start! Kyla and Jethro are amazing and I'm so rooting the for them in the upcoming books. I can't wait to see where Melissa takes us next in this series! I would definitely recommend this to everyone!(: It was pure awesome-sauce!
Melissa Pearl is one of my favourite Authors, and I received an Advanced Reader Copy from her for review.
I love the characters in this story, their flaws are so completely human and normal, the twists and turns are fast moving and head turning. I can't wait to see more of the others in this series.
This book was a great book! It took me a while to start it, but once I did, I couldn't put it down! I fell in love with the storyline and every character that was brought into the story. I felt like I was part of the story, and felt like I knew each character personally. I can't wait to read more in the series!!
I received a copy of this book from author Angela Orlowski-Pearl. I loved it. Melissa created such an incredible new world , the characters were like rich and like able. I read the book in one day can't wait to get the second the book. This is a well thought out and interesting book that kept me interested from start to finish. Definitely recommend this as a must read. I really really liked it
Had the pleasure of reading and ARC of this book and it's awesome! This is the authors first foray into true fantasy, and she pulls it off beautifully. Can't wait to get my hands on the next one in the series!
An ancient prophecy sets two Seekers on a journey to find the missing Elements needed to banish Darkness from their world.
DISCLAIMER: I was given a copy of this book by the author (via Goodreads/Shut Up and Read/Read It And Reap) in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
ADVISORY: This book contains violent situations and mild sensuality
Synopsis:
“… Through earth, water, wind and fire I will be found ...”
The Seer, Mordekai, has been watching the night sky for years awaiting the sign that signals the impending return of Oron, and after 16 years, that night has come. He quickly returns home, shows his discovery to his apprentice, Nikara, and they both hastily depart the wicked city of Mezrah for the northern city of Taramon.
Meanwhile, in Taramon, Princess Kyla has to face the wrath of her mother, Queen Elaina, after yet another misadventure outside the city walls. Her childhood friend, Jethro, and Jethro’s cousin, Lord Athra, do their best to run interference, but the Queen has had enough and grounds her to the city, directing the royal guard to not let her leave their sight.
However, when a large object falls from the sky, a contingent is sent to investigate, led by Lord Athra and Jethro. They discover a large black rock with golden swirls, as well as fragments scattered all about. They determine the object to be harmless and samples are gathered; however, when Jethro touches one of the fragments, he has a totally different reaction, getting burned by it and becoming quite ill. They return quickly to Taramon, and Kyla’s attempts to go visit her sick friend are thwarted by the guards. She distracts herself by reaching into the pouch of rock fragments that Athra brought her as a gift, totally unprepared for the bad reaction she also receives.
It turns out that both Kyla and Jethro have been chosen as the Seekers, and are now charged with the perilous journey of trying to find and unite the missing Elements. The marks on their skin are symbols of the four elements – Jethro has earth and fire, and Kyla has water and air. As they set out on their journey, a map will appear on one of their arms, showing them where they are to go next. Kyla and Jethro continue on journey, collecting Elements along the way and confronting many dangers, the biggest being their feelings for one another – feelings that they are not allowed to have, as Kyla is already promised to Lord Athra, their future king.
King Ashan of Mezrah is aware of Oron’s prophecy, even though he has been forbidden it to be spoken of. He is the source of much of the Darkness upon the land, and has no intention of allowing it to be fulfilled. He has spies everywhere, even in Taramon, and sends his ambassador, Safeer, to enforce the treaty that brought peace after King Heron’s death, eight years earlier, frequently levying additional taxes and hardships upon the people of Taramon.
But Athra harbors resentment against the Queen’s fears, as well as the injustices brought upon the people by this treaty. Indeed, he desires revenge against King Ashan and his dark armies, feelings that are being masterfully manipulated by a spy in their midst. Do Athra’s secret ambitions and plans to train up an army play right into Ashan’s hands, whose ultimate goal is to take over the world? Or can Kyla and Jethro pull together the Elements needed to restore Light to Darkness?
Comments:
This is the first book in the Elements trilogy. We are introduced to the Seekers, Elements, trolls, tree people, as well as the movers and shakers in Mezrah and Taramon. There was plenty of adventure and excitement, as well as a hint of romance and intrigue, and I look forward to reading the rest of the books in the trilogy. (There were a few minor grammatical and/or formatting errors, but overall, this book was well written and enjoyable.)
Our heroes, Kyla and Jethro, set off on a journey, discovering the wondrous lands surrounding them, fighting foes along the way, making unlikely friends, and discovering the Elements. Jethro tries to keep his distance from Kyla, his long-time friend, in an attempt to honor her betrothal to his cousin, Athra, the chosen future king. His distance causes her much pain and confusion, as she doesn’t understand the reason for it. However, an unlikely kiss ignites their awareness of one another – no longer as “best friends”, but as the man and woman they have grown into. Can they complete their mission without compromising their honor to their people?
But King Ashan is a master manipulator with spies everywhere, and has been setting things in motion for years – things that are now coming into fruition. And he has set his most lethal assassins, the Elite, after the Seekers, with orders to kill. Does Oron’s prophecy stand a chance against the powers of Darkness?
Review It was strange reading this book. Whenever I picked it up I felt like I really liked the story, but somehow I was getting tired of it and putting it down. And every time I put it down I felt the need to pick it up again and find out what happens next. Talk about frustarting!
In the beginning I sort of had trouble keeping up with the many different characters with weird names and the relationships between them. I soon discovered though, that there was an index at the end of the book with the name and a few basic facts about every important character. This was really helpful and I often turned the pages to remind myself who is who.
While reading I was thinking it was probably going to be a 2,5 star book. After the middle, though, it started getting much better, so it earned an extra star. All 3,5 stars given to this are solely based on it's storyline, which really is fantastic and very original and also on princess Kyla!
I did feel that there were many things missing from this book though. The storyline was very interesting, as I said, but the way it was narrated was lacking. A book should show and not say, and I feel this book was doing the exact opposite. We were always "being told" of what happened or what someone's character is like instead of "being shown". There is one character for example (Safeer), who is always described as being cruel and merciless and completely dislikable. This is always described by other people though! We don't get to see him "in action" until very late in the book, so we don't exactly get the chance to form a first-hand opinion on him, but only get to see him through a looking glass.
Furthermore, the pace was very slow, at times focusing on not-so-important details instead of the main plot. Whenever there is some action coming up, where you feel the anticipation growing, it either finishes really fast, or it finally doesn't happen at all. The perspective switches between many of the characters of the books, giving us the opportunity to experience the story from different angles, but also giving us information on many random things. I would prefer it if the POV was only switching between the two-three main characters, so that I could learn more about them and less about everyone else.
As far as the characters are concerned, I really loved princess Kyla, the protagonist of the book! She is a strong female character, always feisty and witty. She doesn't really care much about being a princess and she much prefers running outside or practicing with a sword, than wearing a dress and studying. She really loves adventure and would definitely prefer risking her life doing something fun and dangerous, than playing the boring role of a princess. Her character was really refreshing and one of the best parts of this book! As for Jethro (the guy who is in love with Kyla, but doesn't want her to find out because she is to be married to his cousin), I was a bit annoyed dy him. I get why he can't tell her about his feelings and how hard it must be for him and all, but the way she is always pushing her away, often not even talking to her, is kind of getting on my nerves. I'd like to see some clever dialogs between those two and I hope we get some in book number two!
I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of the series and I have a strong feeling that the next two books are going to be even better than this one!
First Line It was once said that a light could shine in the darkness and the darkness could not overcome it, but then the light died and a darkness born of doubt and fear began to fester throughout the land, breeding an evil that no one invited.
Recommend it for... Indie readers Fantasy/Dystopian fans
Don't recommend it for... People who want to read an action-packed, fast-paced book
*I won this book on a goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest opinion, but this has not affected my review of the book.*
THE OVERALL SUMMARY: (This may contain spoilers..)
Basically it's about two seekers: a wild, carefree, sarcastic, cocky, fearless, beautiful, extremely annoying 16-year-old teenage princess- Kyla who joins forces with Jethro an amazingly sexy character who requires no further description and who also happens to be in love with her but has to keep it a secret because she unfortunately is the bride-to-be to his cousin and best friend- Athara...
WHY!!!!
Moving Apart from the romantic side, the story still had a lot to offer: -the incredibly detailed/humorous/realistic descriptions that were so riveting (I looked that up on google) to read.. - The different atmospheres created: fear, resentment, heartache, longing, malice.. yadee yah yah... - Strikingly attractive characters I mean complete characters.. -The witty dialogue/heart warming thoughts:
"... and Jethro, who was known for his ability to make people laugh, had obviously had his humour gland removed, because he had not said a word."
"The thought had been harassing her all evening. Kissing Athara was nice, but kissing Jethro was beyond compare, How could that be so?"
"... A troll. A gargantuan, terrifying not-even-supposed-to-exist-troll. .. 'I'm starting to believe in trolls now.' Her fleeting grin was etched with fear. 'It's not a myth after all. I must tell Father.'
- The creation of an entire mythical world complete with fabricated monsters and what not revolving around the 4 elements..
MY THOUGHTS..
-THIS IS ONE HECK OF A READ -WHY ARE YOU SO ANNOYING KYLA? JETHRO DID NOTHING WRONG!!
-MELISSA PEARL I LOVE YOU -ARE ALL QUEENS LIKE ELAINA? -MORDEKAI IS REALLY FREAKY -WHY ARE YA BOOKS LOVE TRIANGLES NOWADAYS? -I WANT TO READ THE NEXT BOOK -ERASE THAT... I NEED TO READ THE NEXT BOOK!!!!!
Often times do I receive digital copies of books from their authors in exchange for nothing but honest reviews. Often times also, do I find these books good, or even just okay. But rarely—and I really mean rarely, do I find these books crazy and amazing enough to sweep me off my feet.
First things first, I have to tell you guys this: the world-building in this book is completely, completely ma gical! The way the author drew an entire world this beautiful was so impressive. The images she painted were very vivid in my mind, as if they really existed in the first place. This wondrous world she created was so stunning that by merely envisioning scene after scene, my breath was taken away. There were canyons with trolls. There were rainforests with tribes. There were two great cities opposing each other. (These were just as captivating as they sound and I'll even be preparing myself to be awe-stricken once again when I read the second book and explore more of this world's glory.)
Aside from the world-building, what's even better is how great the main character is. Kyla is stubborn but still caring, softhearted, yet kick-ass at the same time. She seeks adventure. She's not afraid to conquer her fears. She has a myriad of mood swings and hates being left out. She has a crush on someone she used to be close with, but not anymord. And no matter what she does, she can't seem to please her mother. Wait, are you kidding? Her character pretty much describes who I am! (Minus the part where she has incomparable fighting skills, that is. :D) For short, she's the perfect mix of adorable and admirable. She's the kind of character I'd really look up to.
I also loved the plot of this book. I know that stories about prophecies and "chosen ones" can get pretty tiring sometimes. In fact, they're so overused that they're starting to turn into cliches. But yeah, well, this book is an exception. The inclusion of the prophecy in the story was well-executed and was introduced from the very beginning of the story. It was thoroughly explained and thar really helped make things more believable later on in the story.
I'm torn between four and five stars so I'm just going to give it a four point five star rating. I really can't give this book five whole stars since there was never really a moment that gave me strong, overwhelming emotions or "feels" as you call it. Maybe I wanted more romance but I totally understand that that isn't really fitting for the main character's situation.
To sum it all up, Uknown by Marissa Pearl is an amazing read with jaw-dropping world-building, an awesome main character, and a compeling storyline. If given the chance, I would definitely continue with the series.
