A Cyborg for the Alien Mercenar de Mina Carter Serie Alien Mercenaries: Reapers libro 1
Argumento:
This story is a good start to an offshoot Lathar series. In this series, the Reapers, a mercenary style group of warriors scamper around the galaxies performing rescues, shooting it up with evil bad guys and finding their forever mates. There's not a whole lot of difference between this series and the many volumed Lathar stories other than location, plus an ever growing cast of new characters/species.
There's a bit of crossover appeal, at least once since Murphy, the president of Earth, is mentioned. He's a character who seems to have morphed several times throughout a couple of offshoot series as well as the original Lathar stories. He's still a mystery overall, which I find very frustrating, but that's for another time.
In this book, Jesh, a sort of human/cyborg hybrid, needs rescuing after the Reapers find out she's been held for years by some evil human group. Oh, in case you didn't know, the bad guys in virtually all Mina Carter series are humans, hands down. There are one or two other evil doers, but it's always the stupid, venal, greedy, rapey humans who serve as the mustache twirling bad guys. They're about that dimensional, too, with no personalities or characterizations. Just snarly, ignorant Bad Guys. This is always true unless they are female. Human females are almost always fabulously sexy smoke shows, supposedly smart, often being terribly mistreated by human males, and in dire need of rescue by the big hunky Lathar, Beserkers, Vorrtans, or mercenary forces. Jesh is a super soldier but still needs to be saved from the clutches of yet another group of evil human scientist types seeking to build better cyborgs and rule the universe somehow. At least this story had some interesting complexities, mostly about Jesh's origin story.
Covak serves as the man candy here, a Vorrtan who is also mostly cyborg. Vorrtans are a species modified many centuries ago to serve as warriors/fodder to throw into all war scenarios. Once the fighting was won, they were typically destroyed to keep them from turning on their masters. Of course some escaped and took over their own destiny so here we are. They've appeared in other Mina Carter books, but we don't learn anything new about them on this one. Covak is basically just another hunky hero type, which I found disappointing.
The rest of the crew is clearly in line for other books in this series. A band of misfits for sure and possibly a secret/double agent of sorts. It could be interesting
Mina Carter has long been a really great writer, and the first 5 or 6 Lathar books are among my favorites. But she pulls some lazy writer tricks that make my head hurt. She sometimes gets stuck in a corner and hastily changes the motivations/behavior of an established character to get herself out. That's probably my most hated writer trick. She also has an OBSESSION with hammering on how "tiny" the females are. If you took a drink every time she mentions or emphasizes this, you'd be out cold in one or two chapters. It's just that annoying. Yes, we get it! These guys are usually monstrously tall and big. But the endless fixation on tiny women is headache inducing. She also lets her male characters often refer to their tiny women as "little one," which makes me want to projectile vomit. This endearment is right up there with "princess" in my list of most hated nicknames. In my mind, both these nicknames infer children, and I can't stand that. Even the ubiquitous "baby" would be better than "little one," which i truly hate.
(If you want yo read Mina Carter at her best, her best series aside from the early Lathar books, is Project Rebellion, a four book series. It's fantastically written and really action packed.)
This book is a decent read and might indicate good things to come. I suspect the threads of this series will intertwine with the Lathar series at some point, since at least one character may be reporting to the Earth president or whatever organization he may be part of. Guess we'll see.

This is a spinoff from the Latharian and Warborne world created by Ms. Carter. I read this story of The Rebels band of mercenaries within (1) day; but it has taken me awhile to assemble my thoughts ss this is an intense and nerve racking story. Jesh and Covak are each searching for acceptance, family, and a connection to a special someone. Covak comes from a matriarchal plant where males only have value as caretakers for the dominate females and this isn't what he wants at all. He had been excommunicated from his Vorrtan world (he refused to be part of a warlady's harem) but found acceptance with the Reaper mercenaries. The Reapers are tasked with rescuing a female. Jesh is the said female and when Covak sees her on the viewing screen he vows to come for her. Little does he or anyone else know of Jesh's heritage. She is a mystery. Jesh is an unknown quantity even to herself. Medical drugs, tests, etc. that humans put her through have cleared her head of any previous life or lives. When these two meet a tentative connection is made but trust is elusive. The path to this book's ending fills the reader's imagination with hope and the destroying of the abominating atrocities the humans have subjected Jesh to. There is the overlapping of characters from the Warborne series; namely Zero and his importance to Jesh's life, and President Murphy of Earth with his NOMADs influence from the Lathar series. Each is searching for family, home, and love. I received this book as an ARC reviewer and voluntarily leave my honest opinion.
I really enjoyed this one! It pulled me in from beginning to end and held my attention the entire time. I was super excited to jump into this new spin off series, (you can definitely start here) and with the little bit that we have seen of the Reapers was excited to get to know them better. In this one, the Warborne have reached out to the Reapers and asked for their help in tracking down an unknown alien subject that has been experimented on and moved facilities. The Reapers are ready to take it on and as soon as Covak sees a picture of Jane/Jesh, he knows there is more there for him and is instantly engaged. I loved watching the way that he reacted and interacted with Jesh from the beginning. It was really cute. She is a cyborg though her memory has been messed with and she knows there are missing pieces. I enjoyed watching Covak and Jesh together as they got to know each other in the midst of figuring everything out and after she gets her memories back it got even better. I loved watching the way that Covak accepted her and how they both could relate with certain aspects of how they were created. This one had plenty of action and intrigue as well as we get to learn more about Jesh, where she came from and what she is, (as well as Zero from the Warborne) and then when we add in Jex. This story was well written and a fun read as well as a great start to the series. It starts lining things up and setting things into place and I am super excited to see where things go next and can't wait for the next one to come out! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Summary: Covak the mercenary is immediately taken with our cyborg woman as they go around with the crew trying to sort out the hairy situation they have gotten themselves into.
In-Depth Review: I didn't know what to expect from this book since is not the type of book I usually gravitate towards. However, I had such a good time. The author made the story quick and entertaining with engaging fun characters. The romance steals the book, though. The created-for-war giant Alien and the deadly cyborg being soft for each other is my new favorite thing!
Although in very different situations, both Jesh and Covak seem to want acceptance for who they are and not for meeting the preconceived expectations of others. Jesh is actually a cyborg whose mind has been wiped, leaving her without memories yet trying to figure out why she feels so strange. Her “family” is completely unfamiliar to her and she has no connection with them. Covak comes from a society where women are dominant and men subservient. Rather than be forced to become part of a harem, he has been exiled for not being obedient to the female’s wishes. Instead he joined the Reapers, a mercenary team who accept him as their medic whose skills will be valuable when they retrieve a woman with no known history who has been kept in a questionable medical facility. And when Covak sees Jesh, he finds himself responding to her as they recognize their attraction. Will they learn to trust each other? Will her memories come back, making her a danger to others? Or can they possibly find happiness together?
Jesh has been lied to by those she should be able to trust...her family. But as snippets of her past come back to her, she also starts hearing a voice in her head. Is she going crazy or is there more to her memory blanks than she has been told?
Covak is like a gigantic cinnamon roll with a streak of "mine" thrown in for good measure. He and his rag-tag bunch of mercenaries are in it more for the adventure than the riches. There like the A-team in space!
Jesh and Covak meet in the midst of a break-out/jailbreak and they soon realise that they have a lot more things in common. But as Jesh's past is revealed, will Covak see her still as the formidable warrior she is or as some overgrown lab experiment? Covak does not disappoint and he accepts Jesh just as she is. He does not see her as less than or as someone to be pitied. He sees her as a warrior, a medic and a desirable women - no matter what her beginnings.
The lady's Dream crew are a rag-tag bunch but it looks like they will be a riot of laughs as we learn all these new personalities. With a couple of cameo visits from our Warborne favourites, I feel like this is going to be a great offshoot in the greater Latharian universe!
This book hits the ground running & doesn’t stop. She doesn’t know who or what she is, but she knows she is NOT who the people around her are pretending she is. Then a bunch of strangers land their spaceship to “rescue” her. At least they don’t pretend they know her, so she picks door #2 and takes a chance.
Despite lots of people fighting to get their hands on her, Jesh’s memory begins to return & it seems she’s even MORE “impossible” than they all first thought. Covak doesn’t care what she is, he is convinced she is his forever mate. Grab a copy to find out what Jesh is & whether she agrees that Covak is her forever love.
I received a free copy of this book via the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Covak isn't really looking for love but when he sees "Jane" he is quickly smitten. Jesh isn't sure who she is but she is pretty sure she is currently being fed lies. Covak and Jesh meet under trying circumstances but the attraction is real. Now can they survive long enough to see where it will take them? A Cyborg for the Alien Mercenary is first in the Alien Mercenaries: Reapers series. It is a spin-off in this world Ms. Carter has created. I enjoyed getting to know both Covak and Jesh. Neither is sure about themselves but both are sure about these new feelings the find building between them. I like seeing Jesh work her way through her lost memories. I liked seeing Covak come to acceptance of who he is. Together the are unstoppable and Ms. Carter shows us and them.
Did not finish -- finally threw in the towel at 36% through. It was just TOO boring and full of unimportant waffle. I truely do not understand how it has just a high star rating.
The concept seemed good and I'd really enjoyed Mina Carter's books before so I bought the book without reading the sample. Big Mistake. I would've let it slide if the book had been $2.99 or $3.99 AU but book was not worth the $7.40 AU I paid for the Kindle book.
I got to 36% due to skipping through most of the book trying to get to the story. The H and h finally meet at around 35% but there was very little story before this. Way to much exposition and useless waffle.
I would NOT recommend this book. Very disappointed.
I love this author. She is imaginative and her characters are so fun. Jesh is an advanced cyborg from an alternate universe and in a few previous books we’ve read about how horrible the scientific community has treated her. They’ve repeatedly done invasive surgeries removing parts of her to test how her body might react. Covak and the other mercenaries rescued her. When Jesh discovers one of her teammates mainframe is possibly being stored at this one facility their team mounts a rescue. They find what the scientists were truly doing with the technology they were removing from Jesh. Read the book for the awesome beginning to this new series by this awesome author.
I really enjoy Mina Carter’s books. A good combination of both romance and good sci-fi writing (love her including the idea of a multiverse!). I grew up with some of the best sci-fi writers in history (not a kid anymore, lol!) and her books are definitely note worthy. She also includes a bit of mystery writing in her books as well that, along with great action sequences, keeps you riveted to the story. All of that was included in this book. I also liked how she is now combining two of her series, the mercenaries and the cyborgs. Just when you think that a prolific writer like Mina would somehow be running out of ideas to write about she totally blows you away. Great start to a new series!
I’m enjoying this offshoot series, though it dragged at a couple of points. But the actions and what is evolving is interesting. It’s a real problem reading these out of any type of reading order, which is not available, I’ve looked. As I’ve read the Warborne before this series. I already know about the scorperio units and what happens to the pilots. Such a pity they have used her unique DNA in such a terrible way. Loved Jesh, so glad that she is finally saved after being a captive for years in the hands of disgusting scientists. Covak was such a sweetheart, crazy but so sweet. He was open and honest with Jesh from the start. Hated when they were ambushed, but Reapers to the rescue. Read through kobo+.

Exciting new series within the Lathar Universe. I really liked this book, and loved the cover art. Lots of action, well written world development. While this is an off shoot of the Lathar and Warbourne series, it is easy to see that it too will hold it's own in creativity and strong, interesting characters. Loved the Lady's Dream crew members Jesh and Covak are both unknown entities in the way of what they are and where they came from, sort of meeting in the middle of the Lathar universe.
Lots of questions to be answered, so I am looking forward the next book in the new series.
I received an ARC from the author and am happily and freely leaving a review.
Jesh is a cyborg from an alternative universe. She's been used and abused by human scientists for her tech and weapons. This just proves the theory that humans aren't to be trusted with things outside their norm, because they are easily susceptible to corruption. Covak's kin suffered a similar fate from the Lathar. His people were used as weapons and when they were no longer needed they were discarded. Covak is apart of the rescue on Jesh's trail to liberate her from her captors. Covak easily and quickly falls for Jesh and he doesn't mind fighting for her love.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book and am leaving a voluntary review.
The Reapers were on a mission to rescue a captive woman, and it seems that the woman was more than she seemed. The descriptions about Jesh and Covak and how the plot interconnected with other stories were interesting and intriguing. I liked how the protagonists, who had felt slighted, found their place in each other's lives. A story full of action, suspense, tender scenes, some humorous situations, intrigue, deception, technology, violence, romance, passion and a very different heroine. I voluntarily reviewed this copy which caught my attention.
Its a good day when a Mina Carter book arrives on my Kindle! This new Reapers series promises to be an exciting addition to the Lathar and Warborne series. Ms Carter is a wonderful world builder, describing all the facets of the story in detail and making the characters and the settings come alive. Jesh and Covak, as well as the rest of the characters aboard the Lady's Dream, are as strong and brave as they are unique. I am so looking forward to the next Reapers book.
An exciting start to a new series! Book 1 in the new Alien Mercenaries gives us another exciting new world that will leave you wanting more! I love that we get Josh’s story after her character was introduced and it was so worth the wait. The secret that surrendered her comes alive when the Reapers come to her rescue. But Covak instantly knew that she was meant to be for him and when danger erupts he does everything to save her. Will they find their forever? One click to find out in this must read paranormal romance that did not disappoint.
Well looks like we’re heading in another direction from the original story. I’m really not happy about that. Too, too many new characters. Saving grace is I love the mercenaries. The problem, Mina never really completes a story and then we’re off in a different direction learning new characters.
Fortunately, I love the mercenaries. Their code and adventures are fun. I was hoping Zero and his crew would’ve joined the fight. Absolutely love the Warborne.
I did enjoy the story. A little slow in places, but enjoyable.
I always enjoy Mina's books her storylines are always interesting and full of intrigue, action, adventure and interesting characters. This is a suspenseful read that held my attention from beginning to end.
The two main characters are Jesh who is just coming to terms with her new existence and Covak a member of an alien mercenary team, the Reapers are both interesting and well-drawn. Theirs is a somewhat emotional story full of drama and intrigue and one I thoroughly enjoyed.
A ragtag bunch of alien mercenaiies, the Reapers are mostly Lathar related. And I love all things Lathar. This sci-fi adventure thrill ride kept me reading on into the night to see who and what was going on with Jesh. Covak being Vorrtan introduces a new Lathar offshoot that is out of this world. Humans turn out to be the bad guys in this tale and they don’t give up easy. Covak and Jesh will have to fight hard for each other in this exciting read.
I loved the main characters in this story. Jesh may seem like a human woman but she is one big surprise. With her memory missing she will have to learn who to trust and who is using her. Covak is an alien mercenary sent to find her. But just one look at her and he knew there was something more. The story is filled with action and danger from start to finish and these two would have it no other way.
New Alien Mercenary series. This was a great story and I really enjoyed the cross-over with the Zodiac Cyborg series. I liked that Jesh wasn't fooled by all that was going on around her. She is a strong woman and isn't a damsel in distress.
Doesn't take any time for Covak to decide that Jesh is the woman for him. He is protective but he knows that Jesh doesn't need him to step in front of her.
This suspenseful read will keep you riveted to your book well into the night! Mina Carter has once again created a character driven drama full of intrigue and emotion. I find this series delightful…the characters are vibrant and refreshing. This one is a must read for Mina Carter fans. Download and enjoy!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Highly enjoyable read as the Reapers accept a mission to rescue a woman from a secret medical facility with questionable methods of research. Covak lays eyes on Jesh and knew that he would do everything to bring her to safety which is with him. So many layers and secrets to expose until everyone can stop expecting to be ambushed or worse. Love the crew of the Lady's Dream!
Damn this had my head spinning. It was intense and action packed. The storyline leaves you questioning everything. Who can you trust?. Who can you turn to?. The fear you feel is overwhelming, heartbreaking and addictive.
From the very first page it's go go go. You can't put this book down. 🔥💜
What a way to start a new series!! I love me some mercenaries and was sad the Warborne were done. But this book was fantastic! I loved so many tie ins with the Warborne as well! Finally we get to meet Jesh. Definitely a must read!! Now comes the hard part of waiting for the next book!!!
We meet a tortured Cyborg. No memory. Knowing things are wrong in her newly awakened world. Covak is a Vorrtan. He is a Dr. On board the Reaper ship. Their mission is to rescue a female captive. Things go sideways when Mesh escaped her captors. Covak falls in love. A few things are revealed. Great story. Love Covak and the Reapers.
Series is about humans being the evil people and others the ones being hunted by them. Did wish the author did not use broad phrases about humans. Suspect if aliens and other species were intelligent there would be some that were contributing great things and others that were not
