1000 years After Earth, music = propulsion, captains = rock stars, and one guitarist’s songs may be the key to humanity’s survival.

Although the New World Federation’s music-powered engines allow them to traverse and mine the maze-like nebula known as Caerdroia, the colony space stations are dying, with no actual new world in sight.

But Jude Aberdeen is more than just a Federation guitarist; he’s a believer. Like his grandfather before him, Jude sees visions of a Green Place when he resonates with his music, a New Earth somewhere out beyond Caerdroia’s coils. To survive an expedition no one but his offbeat drummer and fugitive bassist believes in, he’ll need to win the Federation’s legendary Battle of the Bands and secure this year’s grand prize: a ship up to the challenge of the nebula’s dangers. And he’ll need to do it without losing himself to the fame and fortune, sponsors and competitors that turn out to be their own kind of dangerous, and soon.

Because the colonies aren’t the only thing that’s dying.

Resonate is a far-fetched idea, but it is still entertaining. The story starts a little rough for someone not fanatic about rock music and instruments but builds into characters you can be interested in. There are a lot of ideas and emotions packed into this book, and the author does a great job of presenting them. For myself, I'm glad I checked the audiobook out instead of reading this one.

I'm not normally a big sci-fi fan, nor is rock music my jam. But this was well-written, with great characters, and a well-paced plot.

It took me a little while to get into it, but once I did, it was hard to put down.

Resonate was one of the first books I backed through Kickstarter, and it attracted me with the concept of battle of the bands in space, as well as the idea of music steering ships. It was all that and the passion to knit the power of music in a space opera hit me throughout.

This takes place centuries after Earth was destroyed and the remains of humanity is struggling to survive on a handful of space colonies, but the colonies are nearing the end of their lifespan and it’s clear they need to find “the green place”, aka a New Earth, to settle in fast. Jude is a guitarist and during his money making expeditions to asteroids, he’s trying to find the green place through his music, and he’s gotten close, but hasn’t gotten there yet. But as he’s trying to get into Battle of the Bands, he finds himself in hot water, and has to navigate it all or watch it fall apart.

It did take me a couple of chapters to get into it, but by the end of chapter 3, I was addicted to the story. I had to know about Jude, his situation, his new friends, and this world. The entire story oozed passion from start to end with the concepts. The integration of music and what it means in terms of the arts, morale, and within the world was well done. The science fiction was on the soft side for the most part, but there was some explanation of some fictional concepts. But if you’re scared that you’re going to get a whole bunch of science homework, it’s not too hard to understand, especially since some of the tech is based on things in our current life. There’s also evil AI in the lore of the story, and the lore was intriguing without much issue. The dog fights in space were engaging and easy to picture, and along with the finale, were my favorite parts. The plot was fast paced and kept me engaged as secrets were revealed among the fleshed out cast and with the world as well. The prose is easy and smooth, and listening to it be read by Timothy Powers was a total treat. There’s no IRL swearing, but fantasy/futuristic versions of swears.

I’m looking forward to how things continue in the series going forward, and if you want a space opera with the power of music as a major theme, look no further!

I have read this book a couple times now, I also backed the kickstarter and have the 2 songs released for the book on my favorites playlist. This book belongs in my "adore" category, because when I think about parts of the book I get genuinely emotional- not something that many books achieve for me. The themes of the book are just beautiful and wholesome yet really show the characters struggling- with loss/potential loss, with fame/sincereity, with fear/doubt, with belief. Friendship is the core of this book and I defy anyone to read and not end up falling in love/wanting to adopt/joining in friendship with the 3 band mates.

On the technical side of things, I think the pacing is really well done. You can take time to see characters grow and develop relationships, but the pressure of certain plot points give you a very noticeable tension. I think I hit 80% on the book and was physically unable to stop reading because it was so intense- even when I have reread it I felt the same way. I think the voice of the MC is very relatable- and when the MC is being over-angsty (something that I really struggle with in YA), it's part of the plot- other characters even call him on it. The authenticity of the music culture was really appreciated- I love hard rock and going to concerts, and I could very clearly imagine being there and how it would feel. Taking that love of music and using it to propel spaceships was like... whoa. It did take some time to kind of grasp the "magic system" -it does feel more like a magic system than how scientific sci-fi would be (thankfully, because I'm a fantasy reader, not much sci fi). But I liked that much of the propulsion-via-music system was shown and more thoroughly explained throughout the book instead of a info dump at the beginning.

Lastly, you need to listen to the 2 songs- Resonate and Treeline- on spotify. I'd say during reading when they come up, or at the end when you can really appreciate them. It really helps form the sound of the MC band in your head and makes them feel so real. Resonate is nice hard rock, and Treeline is more anthem-y and emotional- love them both! Very excited for the next book to see what happens with the MCs and really all of humanity.

As so often, I came across this book by accident while browsing book projects on kickstarter. Now, SciFi isn’t what I usually read, but when the blurb said that music plays an integral part of the story – and not just any kind of music, but rock music – I couldn’t resist and had to get this book. And I wasn’t disappointed. Resonate is a YA scifi novel with a little Terminator-vibe that tackles quite a few big topics: AI, domestic abuse, abuse of power in general, family-member with an incurable affliction being just some of the most prominent. Resonatedeals with all these topics very smooth, everything feels natural.

We follow main character Jude Aberdeen, guitarist and thus part of a spaceship crew. You see, to make ships fly you need drums for speed, bass for thrust und guitars for maneuvering. Just this concept is simply brilliant in my humble opinion. The story takes place in space and/or colony space stations, because our Earth – here referred to as ‘Old Earth’ – only seems a myth and humanity had to survive on space stations after AI tried to wipe them out. But Jude believes that Earth is more than just a myth, he believes it’s real and wants to find it. But to do so, he needs to form his own band/crew and of course he needs a ship big enough for such an endeavor. And the best spaceship is the price for winning ‘battle of the bands’…

The whole atmosphere in Resonate sucked me in right away: The music, the characters, the world-building…everything just fit. While the main focus is on Jude, there are also wonderful side-characters whose story might be further explored in future books and all these characters have a great chemistry.

If you love rock music and SciFi, you will most likely love Resonate. I usually enjoy only one of them and the book just blasted me away. Looking forward to continuing this journey.

I’ve read many YA books and find myself all too often irritated by bland writing, the unrealistic dialogue, and - frankly - often annoying characters. ENTER RESONATE, which is everything I want in a book. And that’s not just because Courtney Grace Powers creates a heart-gripping and transportive plot, but the dimensionality of the characters - from their personal arcs right down to their hilarious and real banter - is unparalleled. If the Instagram reel depicting readers trying to physically “jump into their book” could come true, that’d be me wanting to immerse myself even more fully into the world of Resonate. I want to be friends with these characters. I want to join Jude’s crew and rock out to his hit song “Resonate” in space (though I’d also settle to work alongside Kindle as her assistant). And, like a dream come true, the novel’s original songs composed by the author ARE, in fact, on Spotify: “Resonate” and “Treeline” by Evergreen (yes, the band from the book) give fans a listening experience that draws one even deeper into the story, aside from being jaw-dropping tracks in their own right. Listening to the songs the MC wrote and sings in the book transports you right into that world, onto Evergreen’s deck where Jude, Click, and Naveen play their hearts out in the space dogfights. It makes those scenes in the book so emotionally tangible.

5 of 5 stars! I highly recommend!

This book was emotion packed and action packed and would make a great movie!

The story started off slowly and a little awkwardly, and I had just decided I wasn't going to like it, when Naveen came aboard. Something about the story shifted, and it all came into focus, and I really wanted to see what his story was. The story from that point was about a three star story, with characters you really cared about, but a slow build. About 3/4 of the way through it changed gears again and it was hard to put it down until the end. That section was definitely five stars!
This book is emotion packed and action packed and would make a good movie!

The idea of music propelling the ships was an original one to me, and I found it very intriguing. I think even people that don't know much about music or science fiction would have no trouble enjoying this book. Any important information is thrown into the story as part of it in a manner that didn't come off as teaching us. The characters themselves also show a lot of growth and introspection which most readers could relate to.

Although the story did end in a good spot, I didn't realize until near the end that it was the first of a series. I would have preferred a few more chapters that would tie this one up more completely, but I can definitely see how it will take another full book to do so.

Resonate was a unique reading experience. I loved the concept of the music propelling the space ships, the battle of the bands, and the visions of the green place.

I loved the characters and their relationships with each other. They were well written and felt real to me. I cared about their struggles, fears and desires. The struggle and different ways each character had to overcome their prejudices and beliefs when faced with something "other" that they were afraid of was interesting to read.

I really liked the dynamics between the characters, the friendships formed and the goal they were all working together to reach.

I would say the only thing that kept this from being a 5 star was the first few chapters. I had a hard time getting into it until some more characters were introduced. I think a lot of the info shared early on could have been sprinkled in as needed later in the book so the significance of the information could be understood more.

Other than the rough start, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others who enjoy low romance (almost none), found family, sci-fi, music/rock bands. The songs that went with the book were really enjoyable to listen to along with a few parts of the book where they played them.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

You know when you come across a book and you just know you’re gonna love it?
Resonate was love at first sight for me. Pretty much instantaneous the moment I heard music was involved. A sci-fi Battle of the Bands. In space. Boom, sold.

Jude is a nice complicated protagonist to unpackage. He’s our typical broody lead guitarist, frontman for Evergreen, one of the bands/ships that act as both protectors and explorers in a forsaken earth-world where the survivors were forced to flea and establish distant space colonies.

It took me a few chapters to piece together exactly what everything was, how the world building came together with the music propulsion systems on their ships. But I was pretty well hooked right from the start. The writing is excellent, again the world building was fantastic, and all the little details/extra touches created so much depth in our search for the mysterious and illusive “green place”.

I adored meeting the band. Had a thing for Click, Naveen, Kindle, and Isley, and of course, forever swooning over Jude. And was pretty much in heaven with the music references. Here’s me secretly hoping we get more of a love interest come into play with Gravitate? But either way, I’m obsessed. This was 1000% my jam.

Recommend.

Courtney Grace Powers is a skilled world builder. Despite reading quite a bit of fantasy and sci-fi I was nervous about my ability to keep up with some complex concepts such as music powered space ships but I was pleasantly surprised. She wrote in a way that drew me in and helped me visualize. The battle of the bands dogfight scenes were exciting and as someone who just loves concerts and music I’ve so appreciated getting to hear the two original songs that she created for the book. It’s really helped bring everything to life.

More than all of this though, my most treasured reading experiences include great characters and she didn’t disappoint here either. I was sucked in to the character dynamic very quickly and really appreciated all the banter between Jude, Click, Naveen, and Kindle as well as Jude’s perspectives throughout the book. The deep care they had for one another was so evident! Very excited to see what adventures are to come in her next book!

P.S. Anyone with eyes can see how amazing her graphical elements are. The care she has put into the character drawings and illustrations is dare I say “out of this world”

This was such a unique premise! Battle of the bands in space with some AI intrigue.

What I liked:
- Top-notch world-building! The interplay between the music and the spaceships was well-thought out and described.
- A quick, flowing writing style that is easy to get into
- The original music?! whaaa! Dude, I'm always a fan of book playlists, but original music to go with the book is going the extra mile.
- Naveen and Kindle definitely popped as characters and I enjoyed tagging along with them
- Solid audiobook narration

What didn't quite work for me:
- I had a little trouble connecting to Jude as a character, and I wasn't an Isley fan. Their dynamic wasn't really there for me. And just in general, this story felt more plot-driven than character-driven.

Recommended for anyone looking for a unique, music-infused sci-fi with a fast-paced, plot-driven story.

Disclaimer: Thank you Courtney Grace Powers for the copy through BookSirens!

While I was reading another book, I took a quick peek at the original music for this book and well... I was shredded away! I had to start reading it! 🎸

Now, the first few chapters did go slow and the writing style was a tad harder than other books I've read. I'm not native English, so a few things do go by me and there were a lot of musical terms. A glossary of some kind would've been nice in that regard.

Aside from that, I am a huge fan of science fiction, so the story about finding The Green Place using music as power did hook me as well as the dangers about Old Earth tech.

I'll definitely be checking out the next part, Gravitate, and I 'm excited to add more bangers to my Spotify playlist! 🎵

Closer to 4.5 stars! I really enjoyed this book! It is such a unique concept, and the work the author has put in to make this world immersive (creating 2 original songs with original music) is absolutely amazing. The plot is intriguing and keeps moving. I'm so looking forward to finding out what happens next! For me, my favorite part of this book, is the characters. I love the entire cast - Jude, Naveen, Click, Kindle, Falcon, Isley....they are all AMAZING! I love their interactions; I love that they're not perfect and make mistakes. I love the found family aspect! I really cannot wait for book 2 and find out where the band goes next!

I loved Resonate! Battle of the Bands with spaceships, music, and futuristic civilization; humans have left Earth and are living in space stations in colonies. The friendships that are made and continued in this story are inspiring. I appreciate the way Courtney creates such beautiful platonic friendships in her books! Anyone who likes science fantasy and music should definitely check this book out!

Received as a review copy from Booksirens, this is an honest review. The author if this book truly created a very unique concept that fuels the immersive narrative with utilizing music as a way to power ships across the stars. The characters were stellar in you become attached through a journey that anyone can related to with plenty of shocking secrets to keep you reading.

I utterly love the characters, premise, and worldbuilding in this book. And the fact that it has tie-in music to really sweep you into the sound and feeling of the action scenes is a perfect extra touch. The plot and character development aren't nearly as strong, but they feel largely like a launching point for what promises to be a fun and epic series. Waiting for book two is going to be hard.

I finished this book so so fast. First few chapters took a while to get into. But after that it flew by way too fast. It was an incredible character driven story which I love reading. They’re beautiful variations of what people go through in life. What’s on their minds and the craziness that goes on when trials arise. There were moments that hit me like a train way too close to home.
The idea of their engines (resonators) being powered by sound. By music. Is such a beautiful part of the story.
I brag about this story to all my friends and tell them to take it and read it.
Click and his pancake. My favorite. 100%

I love this book. It is well-paced, the characters are compelling, and even though I don't know much about music, all the music-related elements were easy to understand on the first read-through. Also, as someone who is getting back into reading, I really liked that story is exciting and the prose is strong yet easy to follow! It is one of my favorite books and I can't wait to read it again and again.

I was going through my recommended ARCs on BookSirens when I came across Resonate. The cover looked cool and after reading the description it sounded interesting. I was further sold when I saw that the author had produced original music for it.

If I'm being honest, I haven't read a whole lot of sci-fi. It hasn't always seemed compelling to me, but this story was. I did have a little trouble understanding how music=propulsion for the ships, but I think a re-read of the book will help me understand it better. Despite that I really enjoyed the story.

The characters were all amazing (except for Arlo and Mr. Nottingham) and well-written that if I were asked to pick a favorite, I don't think I could. When I first requested the ARC, I wasn't aware that this would be the first in a series. So as I got closer to the end I kept thinking "There has to be more. How is this going to end. I still have so many questions." When I finished and saw that Jude's story would be continuing, I felt such immense relief and joy. I already can't wait for Gravitate!

I also went to the author's website and purchased a copy of the exclusive hardback edition of the book, that's how much I loved this book!

I’ve been letting my feelings about this one resonate in my head for a while and have found that I feel exactly the same as when this book ended. It is a masterfully crafted space opera featuring the coolest spacefaring ideas I’ve ever read. The use of music to power and pilot ships is so cool and the songs created for this book are amazing. I love how much detail was put into this project, not just at the book and storytelling level.

I love the entire crew/all band members of Evergreen. They all come from different walks of life (or sort of life) and yet can all come together to make incredible music and pursue a singular goal of finding a new planet to live on. The world-building is fantastic and goes hand and hand with the storytelling. With how this ended, I am so excited for the sequel and to see more of the cast of characters.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thank you to the author for my copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.
