Cody Binder had grown up as the smart kid in his class. He lost his mother to cancer and later his father in an alcohol fueled car accident. With no other family, and only a full ride scholarship to MIT to fall back on, Cody puts everything he has into getting a good education and planning his future. After graduation, Cody takes a job with an automation manufacturer where he quickly makes his mark. Living like a hermit and working long days, he amasses a sizeable next egg. After an unfortunate medical issue, Cody meets a nurse named Grace while in the hospital recovering from emergency surgery. Grace, who considers herself damaged material, quickly becomes a part of Cody’s life and the two decide to become a couple. For vastly different reasons, they share a common interest in becoming prepared for disaster. But as Cody and Grace discover, no amount of preparation will prepare them to survive every disaster. When disaster does strike, they must make the decision to stay in their stronghold or abandon it for a different life. Remember, you can’t spell GEEK without a EE.
The author knows how to write well....but I wish he didn't turn the characters into overachievers who could buy anything, use everything and live through whatever life throws at them. Did enjoy his writing skills.
...mostly because if I don't like the story, I don't make it to the end. I really liked this one. It's like a fairy tale where money is no object -- anything the characters want, they buy, have built, and stock pile. Also like a classic fairy tale, the two main characters meet and fall in love after two days and are committed to each other forever.
But it's written well -- and that's really saying something these days. I was expecting the SHTF somewhere around the mid-point of the novel, because that's what us post-apoc readers want to see: the actual SURVIVING. But, sadly, no. They just kept buying stuff, prepping...
The story didn't turn political until about the 60% point and there were no illusions about the conservative side the author was on or who the "former president" in the story was. Kinda strange, when the main character's wealth was largely due to electronic components he purchased from China, considering the "former president" plans HUGE tariffs on Chinese goods.
And still, I kept reading. Until he called the the new (female) president "that bitch." That was enough for me. Glad it was kindle unlimited and I didn't have to pay for it.
Cody Binder was smart, he received a full scholarship to MIT. While still at MIT he worked for a company during summer break that offer him a job upon graduation. He got his Electrical Engineering and Computer Science degree. He also designed software and made a percentage on his designs. He made millions of dollar's, but he was alone. After an appendicitis he meet a nurse. Her name was Grace she had been a Marine. She was retired with PTSD. They both saw in each other what they were missing family, companionship, love. You need to read their story. Its a winner..
A truly enjoyable book. Good character development, exciting plot twists and even a dog (spoiler - not the one on the cover).
Less than wonderful were the last few chapters that heavily leaned into the realm of a political campaign advertisement even to the extent of plagiarizing from current political ads. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but it definitely reduces the long term relevance of the story.
I'll probably read more from this author because the writing was enjoyable, but the not so subtle political statements were annoying.
This a a really good story and I probably would have rated it 5 stars, except for two things. What started out as a well written "clean" suddenly became filled with profanity brought on by the female character, up until then the primary male character did not have a potty mouth either........the profanity certainly did not make the story better, but very much less enjoyable. Also, the book was not edited or proofread apparently as it is full of errors.....Misspelled words, wrong words and missing words. I'll pass on reading more from this author
Good characters and story except Trump was clearly not a great republican candidate
Ross Carson wrote a good story about prepping. His characters were likeable and mostly believable. And I agree that liberal extremists are not the best choice for keeping the USA a top-tier economic power and that Wokeism is flatout stupid. I recommend better editing (the English rates a C+ grade) and too bad the Republican Party chose Trump instead of Haley, DeSantis or Pence. We would have won the 2024 Presidential Election - but that would have messed up Carson's crisis.
I do not like real people being written into the book.
One star for having real people and making them be the bad guys. Also one star for having one be the good guy. I’m not talking about the protagonist. I’m talking about real world politicians. Three stars for having a decent post apocalyptic book. But, This author almost always has people who have lots of money so that they can survive. average equals two stars
This book was just FUN to read. Loved the characters and the journey. Yes not quite believable but just an all around uplifting story in this genre to read and enjoy without being bogged down with the pressures of the world being as they are.
I would have given this a five star, but I felt the end was rushed. You had all this action and then boom it was just done. I felt it could’ve given a little bit more end of the story wrap up. Plus there was a lot of political name calling, which the book could’ve done without and been just as good.
Love the characters and the story. Lots of good prepping information. A lot of thought went into this story. Characters came across very real. Lots of action.
Characters to care about that become your friends. Realistic plot that is engrossing. Planning with more planning. Good romance too! Loved this book. Wish there is a follow up to it.
Liked until the author made the narrative and unbelievable rant about two thirds through the story. Had to stop! Never read a story this political! Also so incredibly unbelievable! An independent!
Borrowed this edition on December 3, 2025, Kindle Unlimited. Totally unrealistic dream billionaire type bull. Lots of unreal perfect scenario survivalist stuff. Political shit storm also a far right violence dreamer nightmare.
You just had to get all political? The story was good until you pulled in the damn "all liberals are assholes" bit. Then it read like a GOP propaganda script.
I have just finished reading this book. It was a pleasure to read. A little Cinderella like but still a great read. Looking forward to more of this story.
Pure politically charged conspiracy theory prose. While the story itself is decent, the descent into political bias makes the ending pure caca de toro (or bull shit).
