Washed Over: ...Or, Things Dedicated

Rate this book
When examining his own poetry Reinfred Dziedzorm Addo often finds he is merely a conduit for the words, the inspiration source itself being a force or another being. In acknowledging a poem's inspiration source, he calls the resulting work a 'dedicada', meaning something written in dedication or in recognition of another.

A debut full poetry collection, Washed Over expands upon Addo's chapbook The Dedicadas and is a journey through a space filled with a breadth of forces and beings active in one's existence. Identity, chaos, autumn colors, exile, people learning from the universe itself...these and other dedicadas make this collection an exploration of the experiences of someone washed over by life's many inspirations.

This book “Washed Over…Or, Things Dedicated” is a book full of lovely poems that I had the pleasure of reading. The Author Reinrfed Dziedzorm Addo did an excellent job with this book. Books like this really is not my cup of tea. I find it hard to rate a book about poems because I feel like Authors place their hearts and soul into this body of work.
Not saying that Authors who write books don’t, but Poems just hit different. The cover of this book is simple, but you can tell there is a great meaning to the reasoning of choose a bird on the cover for this book. I love that you can really feel and understand more about the author when you read this book. You can tell that he is so much more than just an author.
This book is about seventy-seven pages, with about twenty-seven poems inside. That is broken down into four diverse groups. This book came out this year 2022 so its still very new. Reinfred is a Ghanaian American writer. Is an award-winning author? This book is a collection of poetry. I am going to tell you the poems that I like and why I liked them. I just want to be clear that this is my opinion and mines only so please do not take what I say as being standoff ish or anything. I was simply asked to read and review this book and give my input so that is what I am going to do.
I like the poem “Nothing to you” I like that he talks about people not wanting to us and I am guessing he is talking about people of color making it. He talks about them not supporting us. They love our music; they love to see when we make it but when are they going to really going to show us that they are happy that we are going to made it. I took this as people love to clap for us when we are up but when we are down, they love to see us down. They love our style and our music that they want to copy us. That is what I got from reading that poem.
At the of some these poems at the end of them he has a dedication to someone which I liked. Is not a long one but he tells you who inspired that poem or story that was written? I like that I like how it gives the poems a tad bit more meaning. It should who was the inspiration behind the piece. Another one of his poems that I liked is “Design Flaws” I love how he breaks down each of his flaws and turned them into beautiful poetry. I know how it is to wear your heart on yourselves and embrace your flaws and all.
I really enjoyed reading this book of poetry and getting to know more about the author. It was a treat; I would rate this book 4 stars. I would recommend it to friends and family, these poems where beaufly written. They are so powerful and a joy to read. If you are in the mood to read some wonderful poems and remarkable stories make sure you take the time to read this body of work, you won’t be disappointed at all. Have you read this book? If so would you recommend it to family and friends?
