My secret’s out. The mage council knows about my forbidden magic, and they plan to make an example out of me and everyone who knows the truth.
Everything I feared for so many years is coming true.
Running from my power didn’t protect my secret or those I care about. So, I have to embrace my magic and all the death and destruction it leaves in its wake.
The only way to evade the council is by working together with my mates as we travel to another realm. While there, I discover that my magic isn’t what it seems, meet family I never knew I had, and learn that Doyle and the council are part of something so much bigger than me.
Can I finally use my spirit magic for good to protect the world from a rampaging war goddess? Or is it already too late?

Honestly I may end up a little harsh...and I don't mean to be. Spoilers.
I am gonna just break this down in parts so it doesn't seem like ranting.
Plot: What in the ever loving hell is happening. Book one set up a decent plot. Council=bad guys. I just system. Etc. Made sense. We end book one with them finding out she's a spirit mage. Got it. Then....we add in an entirely different system of magic that includes beings from other realms, Greek mythology but not at the same time, she's some chosen one (I mean obv) but there is a sooth seer and everything. And the council plot line was just nothing. It's like she looked at book one and said mmmm. Nevermind, but I already wrote it so I'll just change it in book two. It felt completely different and was quickly jammed into the book.
Characters: If I never read Izzy's pov again it would be too soon. I gave her the benefit of the doubt in book one and decided okay she is whiny and awful in her inner monologue but HOLY SHIT. This book was horrible with her. She would switch between "omg I'm the worst person to ever live because of who I am and one mistake when I was a child. How can I ever go on and love others or be honest people (continues for PAGES)" and "do you want me to get stabby with my cute little killer self because someone hurt your feelings?" Annoying pick me insecure craziness and I could not read another line. Horrible.
Then let's get started on the guys. Bishop- this man only has one thought this whole book. How do I take my oh so deprived horrible things I want to do to Izzy and not do them because it will somehow scare her. Then he "does them" after the worst conversation ever and it is just super light bondage....and sex. Sir. You are not some sick deviant sit back down. But back to this conversation, he goes on about how his needs will make her scared because past attempted sexual assault, and she dives into the omg you don't want me because I'm so dirty and used. What? You are a virgin and you jump to the used conversation.? This dialogue just bothered me so much......women can enjoy sex too. They can enjoy it after a SA, and this whole conversation set that back 50 years.
Everyone else: They all are coming across as just meh for me. LEVI does now have a cool backstory but I feel nothing else for him. Luca existed in this book I guess? I honestly don't remember him much in this one. Archer or "sunny boy" is SO BORING. I am happy and great because I have to be not because I am. 🤢 And Cain. I barely remember anything of him either aside from the hellhound scene and the sort of not really sex scene.
Cliffhanger: Let's not even pretend she doesn't some how activate her death powers to being archer back, or convince Hades or someone trades spots with archer in the after life to bring him back. What I want to talk about is how the big bad Lua calls her sport the entire monologue. "Too late sport" "see you later sport" she's a goddess and eternal and has been trapped for millenia. And she somehow sounds like someone's Midwest baseball coach dad when you've had a rough day.
Overall I am just disappointed. I liked the first book and was excited for this one, but at times I wondered if the same person even wrote them because I felt so DRASTICALLY different about them. I feel absolutely horrible feeling this way and gave this a two because I respect how hard it can be to write a book any book let alone a series, but I just wish this was different.
The book was OK I guess. There was nothing new or innovative about it. And the couple of sexual scenes that she had were very cringe to me. I mean the first thing she ever does sexually with her mates is give two blowjobs one of which being pretty aggressive. And then when she loses her virginity, it’s also in an aggressive manner. Because this author doesn’t know how to write a normal Dom situation. And I don’t care, but I feel like none of her mates would’ve had her first time be like that way, they would’ve made it special but the author just didn’t know how to deal with any of it. And what the hell happened to Bishop? He had like a complete personality transplant. He went from the sweet, loving and caring guide to this intense, brooding, awkward Dom. And I hate the cliffhanger. When authors need to do a cliffhanger like that you just know that they’re not that great of an author. It was so extreme and just really not needed it at all.
So we go from hiding her magic and collecting mates to fighting an evil goddess who is trying to destroy realms. The group spends most of this book flitting from place to place and meeting her mates' strange families. Bishop has a weird personality transplant, which I didn't like. He's lost his cinnamon roll status. I hated the cliffhanger, but hope it isn't permanent cause that would ruin the series for me. All in all a solid second book.
This ending has me more on edge than the cliffhanger in book one. I will be going mentally insane until book 3 is released!
Just like Veiled Spirits, I am obsessed with Shadowed Spirits. There is so much that goes on in this book; the good, the bad, and the ugly. My brain is going to take some time to process all I just read.
Izzy is still an utter badass, and getting stronger everyday. She is resilient, passionate, caring, sassy af, and selfless. I love seeing Izzy grow more and more comfortable and trusting with her mates. She tries to hold the world and all responsibilities on her shoulders, but she’s learning they are there to stay and help her. I pray to all that is good, that our girl gets her happily ever after once all this is over.
Archer, Cain, Luca, Levi, and Bishop are as possessive, protective, and in love as they were in book one, but even more so now. Does Izzy drive them all to the brink of insanity when she puts herself in danger? Absolutely! Would they still lay their lives on the line for her? 10000%! Regardless of how irrational, scared, and ‘troublesome’ Izzy can be, they love her wholeheartedly and will destroy realms for her.
The plot stayed relevant and got even more in depth with new situations. The group has to handle one problem after the next. Once one problem is ‘solved’, another larger problem presents itself. The struggle is never ending for Izzy and her mates.
Overall, I am as obsessed as ever with this world, Izzy, and her mates. Shadowed Spirits was such a fun, quick, and emotional read. If you read and loved book one, you need to dive into this asap. I cannot wait for book three!
Again, the cliffhanger has me about to check into a mental institution, and that’s all I can say on that.
Thank you peachkeenas and E.L. Finley for an eARC of Shadowed Spirits! This is my full, honest, spoiler-free review!

Still don't like izzy. Bishop turned a sex fiend out of nowhere. The relationship between Izzy and the other mates isn't doing it for me. The plot is all over the place.
I enjoyed this one, seemed like there was so much going on, and when I thought this, I saw I was only 50% of the way through the book. I dreaded coming to its end. I had to re read the first book, before reading this one and I’m glad I did. There wasn’t a summary of the first book at the beginning of this one. It jumps right where it left off. Ivy is frantically thinking of a way to get out of being arrested and wondering how someone knew she was a spirit mage since she hadn’t used her powers recently. After Levi successfully gets Ivvy out of there, they find out Councilman Doyle is the one who put the order for her arrest. Remember, he’s the one that created some sham of a program to help mages with little to no power, but it’s discovered at the end of the first book, that all Doyle is doing is draining their power and killing them. Turns out, Doyle has this object that tells what kind of power a mage has and he had it on him when they went to the councilman building/basement and found all those people in cages. So Levi tries to remove his memories of Ivvy being a spirit mage, and their subsequent visit. Then they leave to Levi’s realm… turns out it’s hell. Levi is short for Leviathan, and his brother is Hades, the ruler of Hell. They are not demons, they are older than demons, billion years old and I can’t remember the right names for them but Levi is a shape shifter and can shift into all the tattooed animals Levi has tattooed on himself. Turns out Hades wife, Persephone had a daughter that is a spitting image of Ivvy, and mistakes her for Melino. Turns out that’s Ivvy grandmother who is also disguised in the first book as Ivvys boss at the bake shop. It describes Persephone’s other mates including Zeus. Zeus is her great grandfather alongside Hades but only Zeus is blood related. She is not related to Levi by blood. One thing that kinda bugged me about Ivvy was that she spoke up in defense to all her men, jumped into things without thinking, back talking the ruler of hell and other Greek ancestors before knowing they wouldn’t hurt her, but can’t think of one good thing about herself. She’s constantly putting herself down and is punished by her men when she jumps into things without thinking of her safety. She has no regard for her life and f someone says something bad about her men (that she refused to mate with) she jumps in to defend them. Thinking she’s better off dead than her men. It’s a constant circle of her attitude, defensive abihr her men, then cycles back to how little she’s worth in the eyes of everyone since she’s a spirit mage. Turns out she’s also part Cura, which is a guardian of the worlds. Hades tricked her into drinking water from River Styx. It’s foretold that Ivvy will lose one of her men in trying to kill Lua, which is behind Doyle in stealing powers. Lua is Levi and Hades mom, who was imprisoned in Tartarus. They have no idea how she got herself free. They are tracking her whereabouts when she appears in a cave in Italy. They ride a “rift” (Levi can create them for travel) to this cave and the battle begins. Unfortunately, Archer dies after Lua removes his heart and squishes it… then it’s the end of the book. Awful ending… archer was one of my favorites.
Shadowed Spirits by E.L. Finley continues to follow Izzy and her mates through more adventure, discovery, and heartache. Each character grows in meaningful ways, revealing new depths to themselves and their relationships. Every revelation adds an intricate layer to the storyline, unfolding with love, laughter, tears, hardship, and resilience on each page. E.L. Finley masterfully crafts a mystical world full of surprises, leaving readers eager for more. The stakes are higher than ever, and the connections between characters only deepen as they navigate dangerous challenges. The unexpected family ties to powerful underworld figures added a thrilling twist, making the story even more captivating. The ending had me more on edge than the cliffhanger in book one—I will be impatiently waiting for book three. Izzy remains a fierce and resilient protagonist, growing stronger with every challenge. Her mates—Archer, Cain, Luca, Levi, and Bishop—are just as possessive, protective, and deeply devoted as before. No matter how reckless Izzy may be in her fight for justice, their loyalty and love for her never wavers. The pacing is fast, with one problem leading straight into another, keeping the tension high. Every new twist pulls the reader deeper into the world Finley has built. The second book in the series expands the stakes, introduces shocking revelations, and delivers a jaw-dropping cliffhanger that left me completely unprepared. For fans of paranormal romance with high stakes, strong character development, and intense chemistry, Shadowed Spirits is a must-read. If you loved book one, you need to pick this up immediately. I can’t wait to see where the story goes next!

Her secret has come out. The mage council knows about her forbidden magic, and they are not happy . They are planning to make an example out of her and everyone who knows the truth.
For so many years, this is exactly what she feared happening, and now it's happening. Everything she ever feared is coming true.
She couldn't run from all her power, and running didn't protect her secret, and nothing she did or tried to do could protect those she loved and cared about. All she has left is to embrace her magic and accept all the death and the destruction that her magic leaves in her wake.
She has to work together with her mates in order to evade the council as they all travel together to another realm. Once they get there, they discover that her magic isn't actually what it seems, she gets the chance to meet a family that she never knew that she actually had, and she learns that Doyle and the council are part of something that is bigger then her and bigger than she ever realized.
Will she be able to use her spirit magic for good and to protect her world from a war goddess that is on a rampage, or is it already too late?
I actually found this ending to be more edgy than the cliffhanger from book 1. I am actually feeling so edgy since this book ended, and I can't wait till I can read book 3.
I am just as intensely obsessed with this book as I was about Veiled Spirits. There's just so much that is going on in this book, good, bad, and even ugly. I'm still processing all that I just read.
I enjoyed the first book in this series enough to read this book but this one was not good. The FMC is super childish and a total hypocrite. She has so many inconsistencies it’s ridiculous. She does MMA but is suddenly clumsy more than halfway through book one. She’s worried about her family and mates being in danger but doesn’t respect that they feel the same and the push and pull with the mates is overplayed. One moment she’s pushing them away, the next she’s begging for it.
I do not like Bishop at all. I don’t like his controlling dominance as it plays for one of her firsts. In no way is that appropriate. I like smut as much as the next person but in this book we’ve gone from zero smut to smut every other chapter. The fingers in her to sleep thing, no just no. Bishop is derogatory and controlling of the FMC who is extremely naive. Not good.
When Levi’s brother is first talked about his name is Acheron and the city he resides in is Infernus. The very next chapter, the city is Acheron and the realm is Infernus and the brother has a totally different well known name.
I really hated the complete disregard not for only Greek mythology, but Norse mythology as well. I understand wanting to incorporate it and make it your own, but you cannot completely change the relationships that are WELL established throughout time just to suit your narrative.
So some things I want to address that I've seen in other people's reviews of this book. A lot of people are saying that Bishop's became a whole other person in this book and I don't agree with that. I think he's been hiding the darker side of him this entire time he's known her because of how much of a flight risk when it comes to their relationship she is. He's finally feeling calm confident enough To show her that side of him.
Secondly, I don’t agree with everybody saying that the guys were violent with her in the more spicy scenes. Like a lot of people were saying it was messed up dorm situations I really don’t think it was. Maybe people are interpreting it the wrong way, but I didn’t read it like that at all.
And then thirdly, a lot of people are complaining about the cliffhanger and while I understand it’s upsetting and frustrating as to what happens. If you remember maybe two chapters beforehand, she was told that in her quest to stop the goddess that either her or one of her mates was gonna die. So I mean, were we really surprised that that’s actually what happened?
I feel like a lot of people interpreted this book the wrong way, but to each their own I guess.
I absolutely love this book and I cannot wait for the last one to come out

❤️ Bishop’s elite. Happy reading!❤️
SHADOWED SPIRITS by @elfinley.author hits KU on February 28th, and trust me—you want this on your TBR! Thanks @literaryinspired for this amazing ARC!
If you love paranormal romance where the stakes are high and the chemistry is higher, this book is for YOU!
Book 2 of the Haunted Magic series picks up right where we left off. I’m still enjoying the story, though this installment left a bit to be desired. I loved the inclusion of Greek and Roman mythology and appreciated how the author introduced physical intimacy with some of the characters. The plot continues to advance—we finally learn who the real enemy is and what’s truly at stake.
The pacing remains fast, with most of the story taking place over a week, but it felt well-handled. However, I struggled with the emotional connection to the characters. I didn’t feel the love or affection growing, which made it hard to fully invest in the romance. While I appreciate the fated mates aspect, I wanted more depth—more connection between the characters beyond their instinct to protect each other. The FMC wants to protect her mates, and they want to protect her, but it feels like an important emotional layer is missing.
Overall, this book is on par with the first, but I think my expectations for deeper character development left me wanting more.
I am going to have to stop reading book 2 of a series before book 1. It makes the start of the book very confusing and this one is no exception. However, once I figured out what is going on and the main characters reached Hell, I was hooked. While I find the trope of a supernatural female having multiple mates is overused, this one adds something new to the mix by making Levi something unexpected. Each of the mates have their own distinct personalities which are maintained throughout the book. Izzy is a complex character. While she does soften and gives up some of her independence as she grows to accept her mates need to protect her, her constantly thinking they would be better off without her and don’t really want her becomes annoying.
Overall this is an enjoyable book. The only think that lets it down is the amount of swearing. When using sparingly or with only one character constantly using swear words, it can effective, however when used too much it becomes meaningless and detracts from the story instead of enhancing it.
WARNING! Cliffhanger! This rated a 5/5 on my trauma scale, and as he next book isn’t even out yet as of June 2025, it’s something you will want to consider before reading!
Izzy finds herself facing off against the council, after her powers are revealed, before learning what all is going on and why. But can she and her mates find a resolution?
I’m still traumatized by the ending, of what was an engrossing book anyway! Izzy and her mates get closer, and she learns a little about each of them, and about what they are facing. The fight isn’t without cost though, and it’s something Izzy will have to deal with.
This book definitely heads to the darker side of urban fantasy, with a troubled world, an insane power, and corrupted leaders. It’s a gripping story, with many feels, but is part of an ongoing series and not a standalone read. Recommended for fans of darker urban fantasy.
Removing the school tag since that has been completely sidelined in this book.
I decided to rate this middle of the road because honestly, the book was all over the place when it came to events. It feels like they're bouncing around to different locations while accumulating problems. She has five mates and while we've gotten back stories on several I still don't feel a connection between Izzy and the rest. Bishop feels like a completely different person than book 1 and I don't know if that's because he is letting more of his personality show or he got a personality transplant. The fate of the world is resting on Izzy's shoulders but beyond her snark and self-doubt I haven't seen her work on her magic so I wonder how that will resolve in book 3.
Either way, that cliffhanger end was not expected and I'm hooked enough to want to finish the series.
Oh my...Oh my...OH MY! So much has happened. They don't get any rest, it's one thing after another, and it's impossible to stop reading. In this book, there’s more action, including the good kind. :) It’s a slow to medium burn. They'll travel a lot and meet new and interesting people. We watch the powers of our FMC grow. She just needs to accept how important she is to those who love her, and that she is not to blame for everything. She is one of those people who are so sarcastic that they are hilarious and not at all monotonous. And the boys? WOW, just WOW. They are so protective, it's beautiful, although it can be infuriating at times. Finley, I'm speechless. That cliffhanger is heartbreaking. How will I hold on until I know what happens next?
This is the second book in the Haunted Magic series.
Izzy's secret is out. The council has discovered that she possesses a dangerous power, putting her and her mates in jeopardy. They are forced to escape to another realm in search of answers, but things only escalate from bad to worse.
The book is beautifully descriptive, and the characters each carry a significant amount of trauma. It's heartwarming to see how they support and heal each other throughout their struggles.
The storyline is captivating—I couldn't put it down. However, be prepared for the ending; it's emotional, so make sure to have tissues on hand—you'll need them.
This book does not end well for the mate group. I'm so angry and upset at that ending and I need the next book immediately.
I spent most of the hooking loving all the history and revelations. I spent the afternoon laughing at the antics from the new characters. Living with the fear of what the council was doing always in the back of my mind.
That revelation near the end and then what happens during that last confrontation left me crying in anger and sadness. I have no idea what to expect next or hot to get past that moment.
EL Finley I am very angry with you right now. Bravo for that unexpected heartbreak. I am not okay with that at all.
I really enjoyed the first book, but this sequel took everything up a notch! Izzy showed some much needed growth while still keeping her sass and sarcasm, which I absolutely love about her. The guys all stepped into their own this time. They were protective, affectionate, and full of personality, making their dynamic with Izzy even more addictive.
The world building in this one blew me away. The other realm was so vivid and detailed, and I especially loved the way Hades and the mythology were woven into the story. It added such a rich layer to the plot. And that cliffhanger? Absolutely heartbreaking. I’m still not okay… is it September yet?!
Izzy's story continues and I was just as absorbed into this book as the first. There was adventure, revelations, drama, lots of emotions, and a crazy cliffhanger!
I absolutely adore Izzy. She is courageous, strong, and has such a big heart. I love her guys too. They prove more and more how much they love and care for her. We also see the relationships between Izzy and the guys deepen. I think this was an excellent continuation! However, that ending had me screaming!! I need book 3 as soon as possible!!
This was such a great sequel! I loved the introduction of Greek/Roman mythology into this world (I’m a sucker for Hades) and learning more about Levi and Cain! It was also so fun seeing Izzy discover more about her unique magic and kick some serious butt. The stakes are definitely upped here from the already massive stakes that book one gave us and be prepared for a sucker punch of an ending. I definitely need book 3! This was a fantastic read!
Izzy and her mates are in danger from the council now that her magic has been discovered. Escaping into another realm is their only option but revelations leave a trail of emotional chaos with a heartbreaking cliffhanger. This second part of the series was intense, but the character dynamic was the best part of this read. I can't wait till the third book comes out!
I received an ARC of this book and voluntarily leave this review.
No, no, no you can't end this book like that?? Damn it was just jaw dropping!! It completely threw me.
Back to this book Izzy (FMC) and the guys end up in hell (yes quite literally) finding out more about herself and her family. For me that was my highlight and chock full of laughs. More so with how Izzy gave her own brand of wit and sarcasm which had me cracking up. Lots of fast paced action, steam and tears. A great addition to this series and I'm loving reading it.
This is an action-packed story that the reader will enjoy -- just hang on tight as it races forward! The council has discovered Izzy's secret and is coming after her, so she and her mates,Archer, Cain, Luca, Levi, and Bishop, are on the run to another realm to learn more about her magic. However, the reader will enjoy seeing Izzy’s growth as well as her strengthening relationship with her protective mates.
Book two and Izzy’s secret is out putting her and her mates in jeopardy so they leave, run to another realm where so many secrets are uncovered and they find a family they knew about. Our FMC really grows in this addition as she accepts her powers and comes into her own. Her mates are supportive and loyal and their journey is captivating and enthralling. Wonderful world building, exciting storyline, this has me hooked and ready for the next book!
woahhh okayyy i was not expecting all these family ties to the like...underworld characters that were introduced but i tell you what i was HERE FOR IT!! its getting real good!
Well this was a fun filled, humorous and well paced installment filled with lots of interesting side characters and background info plus a lot of growth from Izzy. But then that ending..... what the fuck was that ending?!?! Just...... just...... noooooooooooooo
Shadowed Spirits, book two of the Haunted Magic series, is an ebook I borrowed through Kindle Unlimited (KU). The storytelling is good, but the plot went a little off on a tangent with the realm travel, and I'm not sure I care where it's going. There's time until book three releases, not sure if my interest is there.
Well this book had a bit of a brutal ending but omg was it a good read. The story dragged me in and I found it to be addictive and I just had to know what happened next. The characters really started to come into their own in this book and I found myself becoming more attached to them. I can’t wait to read the next book and I would recommend giving this book a read.
Such an action packed sequel! Lots of twists and secrets revealed. Izzy seems to be quite the shit magnet. Enjoyed seeing more family members. Lua definitely lives up to her reputation. I’m utterly heartbroken by the cliffhanger, but I have my fingers crossed for them to all have some justice and peace in the next book.
