Having been involved in various direct marketing businesses throughout the years, I wish I had read this book sooner. That being said though, there was a ton of information that I could still use, in order to help improve my personal side hustles. This book is full of easy to understand advice, which I found to be eye-opening. Everything from pre-planning, to recovery phases, and everything else in-between. To anyone who is adept in business practices, this may not be as beneficial, but for a novice, like myself, I found it to be very helpful. The author gives firsthand experiences, and even covers the Covid years (may we never have to go through that again!) The book is helpful for ALL businesses, whether they be small side hustles, like my own, or larger businesses that need licenses and contracts. I highly recommend this book prior to getting started, like immediately, as soon as you have the inkling of a thought about starting your own business. It could help you decide if it’s a worthwhile venture for you to proceed with before investing a lot of time and money into the matter.
“– it is easier to do it right than it is to do it over.” (wise words, quote taken from book)
This easy to read book is a great guide to thinking through what it means (and how to be a successful) solopreneur. Don’t let the size of the book or the ease with which you can digest it disguise the fact that the information presented is relevant to not only those considering making the leap into entrepreneurship, but also for those who are already running a small business.
The chapters are written in a logical sequence that allows you to build the foundation for your business step-by-step in real time if you’d like. I particularly like that at the end of each chapter there is a section on what the author did and how it worked out (spoiler alert: he tells it like it is, successes and failures) so that we can learn from real life examples - experience shares rather than advice.
I read the book in one sitting and am glad I made the purchase and investment of time. I bought the digital version and have bookmarked more than a dozen pages to return to as resources to refer to for improving my business.
This book is a comprehensive guide for solopreneurs, offering expert advice on launching and maintaining a successful solo business, covering topics like business structure, taxes, bookkeeping, risk management, contracts, and time management, drawing from Dr. Harry Elston's 25+ years of experience.
It’s like a condensed version of Rich Dad Poor Dad, Personal MBA and other such books. Loved that it’s short, to the point and most importantly, very insightful.
I recently started my small business, and applied a few lessons I learned from it like bookkeeping and business structure.
Overall, a useful book not only for solopreneurs but also for small business owners.
Thanks to @Booktasters for the ecopy of this book in exchange of an honest review.
I was given an ARC by the author, with whom I have worked and known well for several years. One might wonder if an objective assessment could be made. Let me say that I viewed this as a newly retired solopreneur needing a hard look at what I needed to know. Chapters 3-5 were invaluable in learning what one needs to know. Chapter 8 was a great chapter on contracts. The risk assessment is a great soul search. Chapter 9 will probably change in future editions as the software world and its offerings change at a moment’s notice. The words about moving from platform to platform are indeed wise. This is well worth the read for anyone interested in building their own business
The book is full of useful information to improve personal side hustles, emphasizing easy-to-understand advice covering various aspects of business. The book is highly beneficial for beginners but may not be as useful for seasoned business people. It covers all businesses, from small side projects to larger ventures needing licenses. Written in a clear and logical order, each chapter helps build a business step-by-step, featuring real-life success and failure stories at the end for learning.
This is a really useful book on how to start your own business. I got it about 4 years after starting mine - wished I’d had it earlier! Great advice from someone who has managed a successful business for 25+ years.
