Where the Nile Meets the Sea

Rate this book
"Where The Nile Meets the Sea” is a fictional tale about a prehistoric journey along the mighty Nile River by two coming-of-age siblings, Geb and Lunah. Set in the Late Stone Age, they seek to find Ari, their missing friend, and fulfill their father’s dream to reach lands beneath a mysterious star that never moves. With every bend in the river, the sibling’s experiences and decisions can change the course of their destiny.

The story begins in modern times with Ben, a university student who embarks on an international flight to Cairo, Egypt to research the mysterious origin of the Great Sphinx of Giza. His curiosity about the world comes from stories told to him by his beloved grandma during his youth. Warm interactions between young Ben and his grandmother are interwoven with the prehistoric tale. The novel’s underlying themes are unveiled in a story-ending, circle-of-life twist.

“Gunjaric's writing impresses with rich details, memorable scenes, and the symbolism she gives to natural elements, such as the North Star, a guiding landmark for the main characters. The novel offers an escape into a forgotten world, inviting us to reflect upon the connection between all humans and universal values that transcend time and space."
--The Historical Fiction Company

"This deftly crafted, prehistoric, and impressively original fantasy is a fun read from start to finish. The story of Geb and Lunah’s battle for survival will especially appeal to young readers ages 8-18 and is an especially recommended pick for families, K-12 schools, and community/public library YA Fiction collections."

This book is a hidden gem—likely partly because it seems to only be available in hardcover and was self-published, which makes it a rather expensive read. As I was going through it, there were a few times when I thought, I’m glad I received this as an advanced reader copy; I’m not sure I could justify paying full price.

But by the time I finished, I knew that if I were going to give this book to someone very special, I absolutely would pay the cost. It’s more than worth it.

The story flows beautifully across three different timelines, shifting seamlessly between them. Each time period feels vivid and alive—you’re right there with the characters. It’s multi-generational and full of rich, fictional stories that seem inspired by the author’s own thoughts, readings, and imaginings. There are touches of magical realism and fantasy woven throughout, yet everything still feels entirely possible.

At its heart, this is a book that celebrates righteousness, goodness, and the importance of helping others—everything you’d hope to nurture in your children, your friends, and yourself.

This is an easy five-star read for me. I was deeply moved by it and sincerely hope the author releases an e-book version so more readers can discover this fantastic story without the barrier of cost.

*******TRIGGER WARNING********
On page animal death with description.

As someone that absolutely loves ancient Egypt and everything that encompasses it, I absolutely adored this book! I did get a bit bogged down by the very end of this book with all of the overload of information that it offers. I did appreciate the annotations and siting of references that she shared. I do agree that the information is vital, but I feel as thought the longer the end continued; the repetitiveness could have been toned down. That said, I would absolutely read other books by this author. I really love the take on the Egyptian Gods were reimagined and how it formed the main characters" lives.

I also believe that this story would have worked without the flipping between timelines and characters. The initial setup was enough for me to stay invested until the end. I would have also loved to get more of Ari's background and story.
