I read the original Book Yourself Solid over 10 years ago, when I was starting my freelance business. I remember loving it and recommending it to everyone. So, now that I’m starting a service business, I figured I’d read it again, and I was happy to see a new edition specifically for creative service businesses.
This book asks some hard questions. It took me a good while to go through the workbook and get clear on what I’m offering and who I want to work with. (Who I don’t want to work with was a lot easier!)
I also got clear on what my expertise is and what I want to develop next. I had been feeling puny and unsuccessful, so this was solid gold.
The workbook was well worth doing, and I’m glad I did.
But then I got to the promotion strategies, I hit a wall. The authors present not one but THREE heavy-people strategies as mandatory if you want a successful business, and act as if you’re defective and uncommitted if you don’t immediately spend hours every day talking to people and giving without expecting anything in return.
Number one, who the fuck has time for that? I’m working all available hours already just trying to finish my work! And number two, extroverts are not the only legitimate kind of people. If I followed this plan, it would deplete me so much, I don’t think I’d have any energy left to do the work or run the business!
I was struck by how much compassion the authors expressed for people who are intimidated by writing or building a website. None for people like me, though!
I was freaking out about this, thinking I’m doomed, but then I remembered: I didn’t do any networking or perpetually keeping in touch with people or referral-generating or any of that stuff when I booked myself solid before! And I really only need a handful of clients this time. Maybe I don’t have to try to turn myself into Michael Port to do this. Maybe I can just be me.
For me, the value here is in getting clear on what your business is about, setting up a red velvet rope policy, and remembering to keep marketing even when you’re super busy doing client work. That’s how you avoid the feast-or-famine cycle and stay booked solid.
As for the text itself, I’m surprised at how sloppy it is.
It needs a proofreader. The publisher did these authors dirty by not doing a better job.
