Skårde the Scourge, bastard son of the Danish king Harald Bluetooth, is a fierce Viking warlord who earned the prestigious title Dragon of Denmark through victorious battles and lucrative Viking raids. When his royal father announces that Skårde will forge a Viking alliance through an arranged marriage to the daughter of Richard the Fearless, the Dragon of Denmark considers the voyage to Normandy an infuriating banishment.

Illegitimate daughter of Richard the Fearless, the Viking Duke of Normandy, Ylva is a Druid priestess and Celtic healer with the otherworldly gift of sight. She learns that she must leave her Breton village behind and travel to Normandy, where she will marry the Viking brute that she has foreseen in a terrifying vision.

When the Frankish king, determined to drive the Vikings from Normandy, attacks and seizes Richard’s clifftop fortress, the Dragon of Denmark must ally with Ljósálfar Light Elves, a Viking völva with powerful seiðr magic, and a vitki-- a shapeshifting sorcerer who can assume the form of a falcon--to reclaim the ducal palace.

Dragon of Denmark is a sizzling, scintillating blend of historical fiction, Norse mythology, paranormal fantasy, and steamy Viking romance!

Jennifer Ivy Walker weaves a captivating tapestry of history, mythology, and passion in Dragon of Denmark, the first mesmerizing installment of her new Valiant Viking series. Known for her previous works like The Lady of the Mirrored Lake, The Emerald Fairy and the Dragon Knight, and The Wild Rose and the Sea Raven trilogy, Walker continues her signature style—a seamless blend of legendary lore and sensual storytelling—bringing fresh life to Viking tales with a hauntingly lyrical touch.

Following the sweeping success of her earlier Arthurian-inspired romances, Jennifer Ivy Walker now embarks into Norse mythology and Viking history, and the result is nothing short of breathtaking. Dragon of Denmark not only charms readers with its magnetic characters and lush prose but also establishes itself as a must-read for fans of historical fantasy, mythological fiction, and Viking romance. Through vivid world-building, soul-deep character arcs, and an undercurrent of mystical spirituality, Walker creates a new legacy that resonates like an ancient ballad sung across stormy seas.

Plot: Love, Loyalty, and Legendary Destiny

At its heart, Dragon of Denmark tells the story of Skårde, the formidable, battle-hardened "Dragon of Denmark," and Ylva, the gifted Druid priestess and seer, who are bound by an arranged marriage that neither welcomes yet both are destined to embrace.

- Skårde the Scourge: The illegitimate son of Danish King Harald Bluetooth, Skårde has carved his identity through countless raids, bloodshed, and victories, earning a fearsome reputation not only in Denmark but across the Viking realms.

- Ylva: The ethereal daughter of Duke Richard of Normandy, Ylva is no ordinary woman—a healer, a visionary, a druidic priestess attuned to the whispering voices of ancient gods and the hidden currents of destiny.

When political intrigue, familial betrayals, and external threats loom, both Skårde and Ylva must turn to powerful allies, including:

- Ljósálfar Light Elves: Ethereal beings from Norse mythology who embody the forces of good.

- A völva priestess: A seeress with potent magical abilities, guardian of ancient wisdom.

- A vitki shapeshifter: A sorcerer able to assume animal forms, blending the spirit world with the earthly realm.

Together, they face betrayals, magical forces, and daunting battles, forging a bond that challenges societal expectations and transforms their destinies into a saga sung across generations.

Writing Style and Narrative Craftsmanship

Jennifer Ivy Walker's writing is a rich, immersive experience. Her background in French literature, combined with her scholarly expertise in medieval myths, shines through in her prose—lush, evocative, and rhythmic.

What makes Walker's style stand out:

- Poetic Descriptions: Landscapes, emotions, and battle scenes are painted with lyrical beauty that stirs the imagination.

- Mythical Resonance: Seamlessly blends Norse mythology, Celtic mysticism, and historical detail into a cohesive narrative symphony.

- Dual Perspectives: Walker alternates between Skårde and Ylva’s viewpoints, offering readers an intimate look into both hearts, enriching the emotional layers of the story.

- Cultural Authenticity: Detailed references to Viking raids, Celtic rituals, and medieval Norman politics root the story in real-world authenticity without overwhelming the reader.

Reading Dragon of Denmark feels less like flipping pages and more like stepping into a dream—a dream whispered by ancient gods and sung by the sea.

Themes: Strength, Fate, and Sacred Bonds

Jennifer Ivy Walker crafts a narrative pulsing with universal themes:

- Fate vs Free Will: Both Skårde and Ylva grapple with prophecy versus choice, illuminating the eternal struggle between surrender and defiance.

- The Power of Heritage: Embracing one's roots, magical bloodlines, and ancestral callings plays a pivotal role.

- Healing Through Love: Emotional scars forged by war and isolation meet the transformative power of connection and trust.

- The Balance of Power: The tension between personal desires, societal expectations, and political survival drives much of the conflict.

- Identity and Redemption: Themes of self-acceptance, redemption, and breaking free from the sins of the past are intricately woven throughout.

These themes resonate deeply, adding layers of emotional complexity beneath the adventurous exterior, making Dragon of Denmark a multilayered experience for thoughtful readers.

Characters: Vivid, Vulnerable, and Valiant

The true heart of Dragon of Denmark lies in its richly developed characters, who drive the emotional resonance and elevate the epic scope of the story.

- Skårde: Introduced as a fierce warlord and illegitimate royal, Skårde initially embodies the archetype of the hardened Viking. Yet beneath his brutal exterior lies a conflicted soul shaped by exile, identity, and longing. His transformation throughout the novel is both powerful and poignant—as we witness his struggle with inner demons and his journey toward trust, love, and self-acceptance. Skårde is not just a warrior; he is a man haunted by the shadows of his lineage and driven by a desire to define his own legacy.

- Ylva: A remarkable fusion of spiritual mysticism and grounded humanity, Ylva stands out as one of Jennifer Ivy Walker's most compelling heroines. A Druid priestess with the gift of foresight, Ylva is attuned to both the rhythms of nature and the calls of destiny. Yet she is not just a vessel for prophecy—she is a woman of will, compassion, and courage. Her internal conflict between duty and desire, fear and faith, gives her an emotional complexity that resonates far beyond the fantasy setting. She is both seer and healer, daughter and warrior of light.

- Supporting Cast: Surrounding the central duo is a vibrant constellation of secondary characters, each contributing meaningfully to the worldbuilding and plot. From Ljósálfar Light Elves who guide with celestial wisdom, to völva seeresses steeped in ancestral magic, and shapeshifting vitki sorcerers who blur the line between realms, every supporting figure adds texture to the story. Even mortal side characters—kings, soldiers, nobles, and healers—are given depth, motivation, and arcs that underscore the novel's larger themes.

Each character’s development is handled with care, their motivations layered, their interactions dynamic. In a genre where side characters often fade into archetype, Walker ensures everyone has a purpose and emotional weight. The ensemble cast makes Dragon of Denmark not only a personal love story but a grand communal saga, echoing the mythic storytelling traditions of Norse skalds and Celtic bards.

The Blend of Fantasy and History: A Luminous Alchemy

Dragon of Denmark masterfully melds historical authenticity with fantasy elements:

- Historical Anchoring: References to real historical figures like Harald Bluetooth, Richard the Fearless, and authentic Viking customs ground the story.

- Mythical Embellishments: The inclusion of seidr magic, shapeshifters, prophetic visions, and druidic rituals brings an ethereal glow to the plot.

- Romantic Fantasy: Sensual, emotional scenes enhance rather than overpower the story's broader arcs, adding a personal, visceral intensity.

This balance is key to the book’s enduring charm, offering readers an immersive experience that feels both true to history and luminous with myth.

Looking Ahead: Wolf of the Nordic Seas

The next chapter in the Valiant Viking saga, Wolf of the Nordic Seas, promises even more epic adventures, emotional growth, and mythic magic. While Dragon of Denmark charts the forging of alliances and the battle for survival, Wolf of the Nordic Seas is set to sail into deeper realms of supernatural mystery, forging new legends among icy waters and ancient gods. Jennifer Ivy Walker has built a world so rich and captivating that the anticipation for book two is palpable.

Final Thoughts: A Triumphant Saga of Love and Legend

Dragon of Denmark by Jennifer Ivy Walker is a shining testament to the power of storytelling that honors myth, history, and the indomitable human heart. It is a book that doesn’t just entertain—it enchants. Without a doubt, Walker has established herself as a brilliant voice in historical fantasy romance, and her journey into the Viking world is one readers will eagerly follow.

If you're ready to embark on an unforgettable voyage across stormy seas, through ancient forests, and into the beating heart of destiny, Dragon of Denmark awaits you.

Prepare to be swept away by the call of the ancient North.

In Jennifer Ivy Walker’s “Dragon of Denmark” twenty-year-old Ylva the illegitimate daughter of a dreaded Norse ruler, had never had a single suitor. No villager had dared court her. A seer and a Celtic healer with a knowledge of curative herbs, she had been taunted, ridiculed, and termed an outcast by the residents of Saint Suliac. Her father, the ruthless Duke of Normandy Richard the Fearless, had claimed her mother during a Viking invasion in her village, later abandoning them when Ylva was ten to marry for political alliance.

Jarl Scårde, on the other hand, was a battle-hardened Viking warrior who also lacked paternal love from his cruel Viking father, King Herald Bluetooth of Denmark. When an arranged proposal and marriage are settled for the two between their fathers to forge a way to a powerful political alliance that would unite the Vikings of Normandy, Norway, and Denmark, the two are compelled to commit to their fathers’ demands despite their valid reservations.

Elsewhere, King Lothaire, a Frankish king determined to drive the Vikings from Normandy, attacks Richard’s fortress and takes Scårde’s young brother, Sweyn, hostage, imprisoning him in the Paris royal prison as leverage to control the Danish king. Scårde is tasked with saving his brother, enlisting the help of the Falcon, a powerful wizard and shape-shifting sorcerer, who could help him find the boy’s exact location. The mission is fraught with danger, mystery, and betrayal, as Ylva’s visions reveal, and the fierce Viking warlord is forced to navigate the treacherous waters of medieval politics and coordinate an attack, hoping to save his brother in time. Will the same fate that brought Ylva and Scårde to each other bring them back together again?

The book’s flow is smooth, offering us a penetrating exploration of Nordic mythology and Viking lore. Expansive in its characterization, the book’s verity lies in its simmering romance between the two protagonists and their unlikely match. The novel’s thematic weight is fleshed out through even prose and judiciously employed exposition. Further, its compelling take on medieval social history makes it historically resonant and easy to humanize the characters.

If you like medieval historical fiction woven seamlessly with sizeable bits of intrigue, action, romance, espionage, paranormal elements, and politics, you will find award-winning author Jennifer Ivy Walker’s new offering, “Dragon of Denmark,” ticking all the boxes to keep you reading past your bedtime. As a noted author in literature, Ms. Walker displays a proper command of her craft, deftly providing escapist entertainment merged with well-researched historical details; the result is a tale that fans of these genres and newbies alike will enjoy.

Ylva is trapped in a huge oak tree, praying to escape the attention of the three men determined to find her. Finally, the hunters turn back to the village, fearing to enter further into the enchanted woods.

But she feels that they will soon overcome their fear and she won't be able to fight them off. The only thing keeping them from further taunts and abuse are because they things she's a witch - able to cast an evil spell on them.

Richard the Fearless had conquered the village and taken her mother, a Breton priestess, as his concubine and claimed her as his wife under Viking pagan laws. She was showered in love and riches until her father put them aside when she was ten to marry another in the Catholic Church.

Leaving both of them shamed and unprotected from the villagers' hatred. Without her skills as a Celtic Priestess and her knowledge of healing herbs and the wool she provides from her beloved herd of sheep, there would be no escape from the physical abuse they could inflict.

It had been ten years since her father had walked away without any contact. But as she approaches her home she sees him standing above waiting for her. Her father, the Duke of Normandy, had returned for her.

To marry off his illegitimate daughter for political gain. To the most feared warrior, the son of the King of Normandy.

I loved this book! It is very well written and the characters are fully developed and relatable. Neither Ylva nor Skårde wanted this marriage that their fathers had planned to strengthen their alliance.

This book is action-packed, full of danger and Viking violence and smoking hot. If you love books with a mystical flair you will love this Viking romance. I fell in love with Jennifer Ivy Walker's writing style with The Wild Rose and the Sea Raven trilogy, but think this is my favorite yet.

It is full of political intrigue, evil intent and treachery that will keep you turning the pages as an enemy tries to destroy the alliance and kill everyone in sight.

If you like Viking romance you will love this book! Highly recommend!

Jennifer Ivy Walker’s Dragon of Denmark is a radiant plunge into a world where history kisses fantasy, and love burns with mythic intensity. As the first book in her Valiant Viking series, this novel sets a powerful tone—simmering with romance, rich with Norse and Celtic lore, and anchored in a deep emotional current that runs far beneath the battle cries and rituals.

At the center is Skårde the Scourge, a fierce Viking warrior with a blood-soaked legacy and a haunted soul. Opposite him is Ylva, a Druid priestess marked by prophecy and mystery. Their paths are entwined by duty, but Jennifer Ivy Walker doesn’t give us a simple tale of opposites attracting. Instead, she crafts a slow-burning journey of transformation—where both characters must confront not only their destinies, but also their own scars and shadows.

Walker’s prose is poetic without being overwrought—earthy, lyrical, and evocative. Her deep knowledge of medieval legend and French literature glows through every page, giving the story an authenticity that enhances its otherworldly elements. From enchanted forests and ancient rites to shapeshifters and völvas, this is a world alive with spirit and story. Yet, it remains intimate—centered always on the emotional growth of its characters.

What makes Dragon of Denmark truly memorable is its balance. It never loses itself in fantasy tropes, nor does it shy away from tenderness in the face of violence. It honors feminine strength, ancestral wisdom, and the soul-deep longing for connection. Fans of Juliet Marillier, Marion Zimmer Bradley, or historical fantasy steeped in sensuality and myth will find this an utterly immersive read.

A tale sung with the rhythm of old sagas, Dragon of Denmark is both fierce and tender—a story that lingers long after the final page.

In Dragon of Denmark, Jennifer Ivy Walker conjures a tale that reads like a long-lost legend whispered across the fjords—equal parts fierce battle hymn and whispered invocation. The first book in her Valiant Viking series, it introduces readers to a world both grounded in the echoes of true history and elevated by the shimmer of myth and seiðr magic.

From the very first page, there is a sense of something ancient being unearthed. Skårde the Scourge, a warlord marked by exile and blood, is a man forged in fire and loss. His path crosses with Ylva, a druidess whose visions stir the tides of fate. Yet what begins as a politically ordained union soon swells into something far greater—a convergence of two souls tied by more than duty.

Walker’s language sings with lyricism, but it is the rhythm of an old tongue—weighted with sacred meaning, ancestral memory, and the ache of prophecy. The narrative flows like a mead-song told by a skald beside firelight: rich with elemental imagery, spiritual depth, and a reverence for the natural and mystical worlds.

What elevates this novel beyond a simple tale of Viking romance is its textured understanding of heritage and power. The interplay of Norse and Celtic traditions, of mortal kings and otherworldly guides, imbues every scene with both tension and transcendence. There is love here, yes—but also longing, vision, and valor.

Jennifer Ivy Walker writes with the authority of a scholar and the soul of a bard. Her gift lies not just in storytelling, but in reawakening the ancient pulse of myth and stitching it seamlessly into the emotional lives of her characters.

Dragon of Denmark is not merely read—it is felt. It is remembered, like a dream half-lived or a tale once told beneath a moonlit sky.

Across the frost-laced shores of ancient Denmark and the windswept cliffs of Normandy, Jennifer Ivy Walker spins a tale where honor, magic, and fate intertwine like threads in a sacred tapestry. Dragon of Denmark, the breathtaking first volume of the Valiant Viking series, is a saga steeped in the primal beauty of the old world, where hearts are tested as fiercely as swords and love is a force mightier than any king’s decree.

Skårde the Scourge, illegitimate yet unbreakable, carries the weight of Denmark’s ambitions on his broad shoulders. Ylva, the daughter of Normandy’s fierce Duke, bears gifts of sight and healing rooted deep in Celtic tradition. Their meeting is not one of fairy tales—it is a collision of bloodlines, magic, and hard-won hope. In their union, we see not just the shaping of kingdoms, but the alchemy of redemption and strength through vulnerability.

Walker’s prose is perfectly attuned to her setting: vivid yet restrained, as though every word has been polished like a rune stone. She captures the raw beauty of the Viking world—the crackling hearths, the biting seas, the sacred groves—with a historian’s respect and a poet’s heart. The battles are swift and brutal, yet it is the quieter moments—glances shared, dreams revealed—that strike with the fiercest power.

What sets Dragon of Denmark apart is its deep reverence for heritage and destiny. Norse and Celtic mythologies are not mere ornaments here; they are woven into the very bones of the story, breathing an authenticity that enriches every chapter.

In Jennifer Ivy Walker’s hands, the Viking age is not a distant legend—it is a living, breathing saga of fierce love and ancient magic. Dragon of Denmark is a story to savor, a journey to be sung about, long after the final page is turned.

Not all sagas are born of battle alone; some are spun from dreams, woven by unseen hands, and carried on the breath of the old gods. In Dragon of Denmark, Jennifer Ivy Walker summons a story shaped by steel and spirit—a love letter to a world where destiny is carved not just by sword, but by the courage to listen to the ancient voices within.

At the heart of the tale stands Skårde, a warlord tempered by exile and longing, known across the northern seas as the Dragon of Denmark. His journey is not merely toward conquest but toward something far rarer: redemption. Opposite him, Ylva, daughter of a Norman duke and a Druidic healer, walks a path illuminated by visions she does not always wish to see. Their bond, forged through political decree, quickly reveals itself to be rooted in deeper, older powers—ones that even kings cannot command.

Jennifer Ivy Walker’s prose is a dance between earth and sky—grounded in the harshness of Viking life yet lifted by the shimmering beauty of myth. Her attention to Norse and Celtic traditions lends the novel a sense of reverence, without ever overwhelming the human heart that beats at its center.

The richness of Dragon of Denmark lies not just in its grand landscapes or fierce battles, but in its quieter revelations: the way a wounded man relearns trust, the way a woman shaped by prophecy finds her own voice amid destiny's clamor. Magic here is not spectacle—it is breath, blood, and memory.

In Walker’s capable hands, Dragon of Denmark becomes more than a Viking romance. It becomes an elegy for forgotten gods and a tribute to the enduring power of hope. For those who long for sagas filled with soul as well as sword, this is a journey you will want to take—and one you will not easily forget.

While I’m regularly not a person who reads historical books, I usually have such a hard time getting into them, but I love Viking stuff!

I sallied forth, hoping it would grab my attention. It did more than that! Furiously flipping pages, totally enthralled with this unique Viking/Elven story line and characters. Loved it. Cannot wait to read book 2

This story was the perfect blend of historical fiction, Norse mythology, and romance. Skärde and Ylva’s story starts as a marriage of convenience, but blossoms into romantic and passionate relationship. The romance combined with war and politics made for a very interesting read.

Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarain, I was gifted my copy of this book.

Skarde is the illegitimate son of the Danish King, Harald. Ylva is the illegitimate daughter of the Viking Duke of Normandy, Richard the Fearless. Thrown together in a marriage of based only on political power and sheer strength in numbers, the two are left to navigate the seas of their new marriage. But there are other forces at work, and they must tread carefully.

For the most part, I did enjoy this.

There is much description about how both Skarde and Ylva lived, separately and then together. I liked the way their marriage grew, and how they came to know each other better, in truth, rather than the image they had of each other before.

It isn't overly explicit, but there is violence. These are Vikings, after all, fighting for the things and people they love.

I liked that both Skarde and Ylva have a say, along with some other characters who I did not expect to hear from! So I really did enjoy that, hearing from the bad guy!

There are great descriptions about the runes, and what they mean, along with the herbs and plants, and the Gods that these people pray to. This is what I felt was a bit too much. The explanation of things is repeated, over and over and it really did get a bit annoying being told who was the God of what, and what certain gems did.

BUT

I did enjoy the tale, and it is the first I've read of this author. I liked the way she told her tale.

4 very good stars

Dragon of Denmark is a must read for all lovers of Viking romance novels!

The tale immerses you in a setting where Ylva is trying to live her life in peace amongst the Celtic villagers who have all but shunned her due to her Nordic heritage from her estranged royal father. She soon learns that there will be an arranged marriage between her and a Viking prince, Skarde, called “The Dragon of Denmark,” to establish a political alliance. Ylva is worried and very apprehensive about meeting her new appointed Viking warrior fiancé but proceeds with the wedding ceremony as she has been dutifully called.

The story tumbles forward with sizzling romance, self-discovery, war, myth, and no shortage of magic.

Dragon of Denmark is an exciting novel that keeps you glued to the pages and staying up way past your bedtime to see how the story ends!

To be honest I don’t usually read historical type novels, the title caught my attention & Vikings intrigue me although I don’t know why.
This is the first of Jennifer’s books I have read and she did not disappoint with her blending of several genre’s into one beautifully written tale.
Ylva & Skarde were abandoned by their respective fathers when young, then reconnect as adults to be used as political pawns. This is a wonderfully written dramatic good verses evil love story, full of emotions, especially with each other and final acceptance & acknowledgement of their worth by their respective fathers. The intertwining tales of the supporting character's, have merit & depth to create a page turning novel that you don’t want to put down.
An enhancement could have been a map and also a translation of the Nordic/Viking language used throughout the book.
Looking forward to reading the following books.

Vikings and magic!

Vikings, Magic, arranged marriages for political reasons..what’s not to love? Skarde is the illegitimate son of the King of Denmark and Norway and Ylva is the illegitimate daughter of the Duke of Normandy. They are to be married for political gain, neither are happy or want to be married. There is definitely major chemistry between these two. The marriage happens and they fall in love.Skarde sails to war several times and Ylva prays to the Goddesses for his safety. This is well written and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Looking forward to the next book in the series. Thanks for the book Jennifer Ivy Walker.

This was my first viking read. Other than struggling through the names in my head, I raise my figurative chalice to the author for her knowledge of French literature and the language. I enjoyed the mixture of French/Celtic/Norwegian. The main characters I loved their love story-not wanting marriage at all to be exactly what each other needed. They were on fire for each other!

It was interesting to see the usage of elves and mages. It had a king Arthur feel mixed with the historical fiction part.

Jennifer Ivy Walker has again created wonderful characters and an amazing setting in her newest Viking historical fiction book. I love the era! The writing pulls you in so strongly that you are completely immersed and part of the story that you just don’t want to put down. I love how herbs and talismans and magics are such a strong part of this story as well.
Add in some steamy romance and chivalry and this is a must read book!

Skårde the Scourge, the bastard offspring of Danish king, Harald Bluetooth, is a renowned Viking warlord with the respected moniker Dragon of Denmark for his conquering feats and profitable raids. His illegitimacy means he will never inherit his father’s lands, but his father has finally found a use for him. The marriage of Skårde and Ylva, the illegitimate daughter of Richard the Fearless, will strengthen the alliance between the two powerful Viking dynasties.

Who would want a Celtic priestess ruined by Nordic blood? Ylva tries her best to hide her shame about her heritage, but with her mother's death, the only protection she has is the rumours of her being a witch. However, a small group of villagers are growing bolder and have begun hunting her - she believed that being captured would have dire consequences for her. While she evaded capture this time, there’s no guarantee she will do so again. Feeling overwhelmed by loneliness and fear, she concentrates on crushing leaves in her mortar and pestle and tries not to think about everything she will never have, like a husband. Little did she realise that her father, who had abandoned her in childhood, was about to appear in her life again, for he needed her for a political alliance with Harald Bluetooth.

An arranged marriage that neither party desired. Could the Dragon of Denmark and a Celtic priestess find love in each other’s arms?

Jennifer Ivy Walker has showcased her talent yet again with her outstanding new novel, Dragon of Denmark.

At the start of the narrative, Ylva appears as a shy woman, always staying on the fringes of society, never feeling like she fits in. However, when her father re-enters her life, he takes Ylva away from the familiar world she has always known and throws her into a whole new reality. She finally had friends, a new family, and a husband with whom she was irrevocably falling in love with. Ylve is a character with a deeply spiritual personality who also possesses wondrous healing abilities. Moreover, she possesses exceptional generosity and kindness. The author beautifully portrayed her relationship with Skårde. It’s impossible for a reader not to adore Ylva.

The depiction of Skårde as the quintessential hero includes him being strong, loyal, and an exceptional lover. However, he is also highly empathetic and comprehends the fear Ylva must be feeling regarding this political marriage of alliance. Right from the beginning, he shows her kindness and respect, but soon he falls in love with her. Despite moments of genuine concern for his safety, Skårde’s endearing character is a driving force in the story.

Another character that deserves to be mentioned is Úlvhild. Úlvhild is an awe-inspiring völva, a mystic, who uses herbs, crystals, and runes. Her seidr vision predicts the future, and she is greatly valued by all members of the community. She enhances the ethical aspect of her character by using a staff-like wand, which she bangs on the floor as she enters into another realm. Despite being portrayed as otherworldly, she is not a character that induces fear; in fact, she is a very gentle and caring woman who readers can truly empathise with. She is also a gracious teacher who willingly teaches her vardlokkur chants, incantations, and spells to both Maeve and Ylva, for she sees in them that they too have the gift.

Similarly, Haldor Falk stands out as another memorable character, as he also delves into magic and possesses the ability to shift shapes. His representation was truly exquisite, contributing to the fantastical ambience of the novel.

The awe-inspiring allure of Pays de Caux in Normandy has been splendidly showcased. The cliffs’ beauty, the coastline’s magnificence, and the green pastures truly ignite the readers’ imagination. The sea mist and fragrant flowers emitted a nearly tangible scent, along with the enticing aroma of herbs like chamomile, thyme, juniper, rosemary, lavender, and comfrey, carefully chosen by Ylva, Úlvhild, and Maeve, for their healing and magical properties. Similarly, the reader can almost taste the flavour of the food, it is depicted so vividly. Walker’s portrayal of sensory experiences demonstrates her prowess as an author.

The combination of Norse and Celtic mythology and the historical reality of this era has been beautifully merged. The representation of Richard I of Normandy, Harald Bluetooth, and Lothair of France is excellently portrayed, albeit with some embellishments for the sake of animating non-historical personalities. Walker has taken these characters and made them breathe again, bringing them to a new audience of readers. The author has meticulously researched every historical detail in this novel, infusing it with her knowledge of herbs, crystals, and deities, creating an immersive reading experience. Kudos, Ms Walker. Kudos, indeed.

The novel portrays a struggle between light and darkness, as well as the blurred lines between the two. This is most evident in the depiction of the Light and Dark Elves. The novel depicts the Light Elves as beautiful, peaceful beings in harmony with nature, while it portrays the Dark Elves as sinister, inducing a sense of terror in the reader. Even though the battle of the Elves is in the background of this novel, it contributes an additional captivating aspect to the story.

Prophecies serve as a vital element in this novel, bridging the gap between the past, present, and potential future. These predictions drive the storyline by establishing objectives that the plot aims to accomplish. The significance of these goals is crucial in creating outstanding suspense and anticipation in this story. The prophecies also give the reader insight into potential events, but they, like the characters, must wait for the events to come to pass. The intertwining of prophecies, visions, and deities truly makes this book a captivating read.

The love story of Skårde and Ylva is swoon-worthy, with intimate moments and an intriguing depiction of the connection between two similar yet different individuals. Their relationship really is the centre of this story. Coming from two completely different backgrounds, they somehow complete each other’s lives. Skårde serves as a warrior, and Ylva fulfils the roles of healer and seer, but their unity elevates them beyond their individual feats. Together, they are one. Throughout the book, readers may find themselves reaching for tissues as the characters confront external pressures like a looming battle, yet there is a constant feeling of their destinies being connected. Their romantic relationship seemed very realistic and was beautifully portrayed.

Dragon of Denmark by Jennifer Ivy Walker is a well-crafted historical romance novel that successfully intertwines spirituality, mythology, history, and romance. The author’s strengths lie in the portrayal of complex and likeable characters, the integration of Norse and Celtic elements, and the attention to sensory details. The plot is well-structured with a clear narrative arc, and the pacing keeps the reader engaged. With its captivating storyline and immersive setting, this novel comes highly recommended to fans of historical romances with a touch of the fantastical.

Let’s start with the good!

This book is very reminiscent of the show “Vikings” that I am sure a good portion of us loved! It had a great mix of history with a dash of magic and romance. The plot itself was wonderful! In fact there are a few sequels and i would love to know more of Ylva’s story. The characters were likable and their motivations were believable.

Now the bad…

I went into this book hoping I would be able to give it 5 stars, but the writing style is just not for me. I found the writing be very repetitive. Titles, royal/banner/sigil colors, rune meanings, etc were repeated entirely too often for me. It was distracting and, in my opinion, took away from the narrative.

With that said, I considered the book a fun read! There are several sequels. I know the first book is available on KU, so if you love Vikings and have some free time, check this out!

DNF. made it 31% through, 12 chapters, and kept getting pulled out of the story by swearing I've already read it because of how repetitive it is. I understand Ylva is the daughter of a Viking and his Celtic wife. you don't have to tell me multiple times every three chapters. I understand that Skårde is the Dragon of Denmark. you don't have to use his full title every time you refer to him.

I wanted to like this book, but it felt like the 2 minute recap a show does after a commercial break, but you're streaming it so there's no break. just a repeat of the same information you already got.

Viking action and adventure

A well descriptive book about vikings. The adventure of love and the battles that they are forced to go through to protect their fathers land along with their own. The tale of forced marriage and all they must go through. A wonderful well written story.

This was another historical fiction book by Author Walker that needs to be on everyone's TBR. What a joy it was reading this story. I took a few time outs to look certain names, dates and locations up, and it was clear to me that Author Walker again did her homework! And the sheer amount of homework it must have been. While she certainly took some liberties for fiction's sake, most everything was true to history! It was a story with a tweak of magic and a mix of heritages, and it was a fantastic read.

It starts with young Ylva, who lives alone after losing her mother, and practices healing in a cabin in Breton, France. She is dragged away from everything she knows by her neglectful Viking father to be a wife in a political wedding. She meets Skarde, a Viking man who fights as a illegitimate son of the powerful King of Denmark & Norway. Luckily, they find not only an attraction, but common ground. They both find that they have Daddy issues! I love the way that this relationship is lovingly teased out. Each one of them realizing that the other is not what they thought, and that this marriage may be exactly what they needed.

Skarde created a wooden version of Ylva's God:

"Ylva accepted the wooden sculpture in stunned silence, overwhelmed by his thoughtfulness and generosity. Tears brimming in her eyes, she recovered her voice and whispered in reverent adoration. “I cannot thank you enough. You have no idea how much this means to me.” She placed the statue on the ledge above her head and turned to smile gratefully at Skårde, who had retrieved something from the pouch at his waist."

I loved all the magic in the story and all the characters, but my favorite was without a doubt Úlvhild. She was so kind and mysterious all at once! I was enamoured with this character right after she read the runes for Skarde and Ylva. She was understanding of Ylva's fate, and wished to help her increase her skills as a healer. She taught her galdr magic with gemstones and runes and crystals. All of this existed! I looked it up, and read extensively into it. Absolutely fascinating.

I was also reminded of how hard it must have been back then to mix religions, languages and customs. Author Walker wrote it all with ease, and I appreciated her use of French words, and then the English translation. It didn't always happen, like I had to look up the word "Skal." "ducal" But for the most part, difficult words were easy to plow through.

Can we talk about the fights? I could picture them in my mind as I read them. Swords and shields and armor flying through the air; blood and screaming, I felt like I lived it through the characters, especially Skarde. The arrows, the birds, the axes! It was very descriptive and I didn't know who was going to make it.

"Adrenaline surged in his veins. His mouth was bone dry, his gut clenched, and his pulse thundered in his throat. Every limb twitched, his muscles jumping with energy, primed for the impending battle. As the Dragon of Denmark, he’d led countless raids and won numerous victories against the Franks. But now, as he led a fleet of fearsome drakkar warships and a formidable army of two thousand Viking warriors into the greatest combat of his entire life, Skårde found that he no longer yearned for glory on the battlefield. He wanted to live for Ylva."

Pulse-pounding action, magical beings, beautiful relationships, this book is a no brainer for people with a hankering for a well written story that doesn't let up until the very end. SKAL!!

Exciting and enthralling start to this new historical romance series.

Dragon of Denmark is the first book in author Jennifer Ivy Walker’s new Valiant Vikings historical romance series and what a fabulous beginning it is! Engaging, sympathetic characters, a history-rich plot with a wonderful romance, and paranormal mythical elements combine for a fantastic story that I didn’t want to end!

The main characters, Ylsa Rikardsdðttir and Skårde Haraldsson, come from different worlds but have much in common. Both the illegitimate children of 10th-century political heavy hitters, they are forced together to forge an alliance between their people. She’s a Druidic priestess and Celtic healer, the daughter of a Breton healer and Viking conqueror Richard the Fearless. When Richard abandoned Ylsa and her mother for a more advantageous Christian marriage, they became village outcasts, the symbol to their former neighbors of their Viking subjugation. Reading of her younger days was heartwrenching as she and her mother were both blamed for a situation, not of their making. I loved the descriptions of her preparations of herbal remedies and potions, learning magical spells and skills from Úlvhild, and her devotion to Divona and the visions she experienced.

Skårde is the son of Harald Bluetooth, the King of Denmark, and a captured concubine. Although reared to lead his people, the heir to his father’s throne, when the king marries, and the union produces another son, Skårde is set aside in favor of the now legitimate heir. Skårde, though, decides to excel in the service of his father and his people as their greatest warrior. But when he’s promised to wed to seal a political alliance in far-off Normandy, he’s deeply hurt, outraged, knowing he’s being sent to the far reaches of his father’s influence to neutralize his potential as a threat to much younger half-brother’s future. Skårde is an accomplished warrior and leader of men who has never been interested in colonizing or farming, let alone matrimony, and feels dishonored and trapped. However, he, once again, steps up to the plate. I loved his studied acceptance of this and Ylsa’s shared fate, his kindness and gentle, surprising gestures of understanding of her fears, and the scorching kisses they share early on as he and his bride begin to learn about each other. I especially enjoyed how Skårde’s grandmother, Gyda, and her people did so much to ease Ylsa’s feelings throughout this arranged and unwanted marriage, taking her under their wings as if she were one of their own.

Besides romance, the plot is filled with intrigue, suspenseful political machinations, myth, and magic, putting everyone in danger. The expansive cast of characters includes fictional and historical figures, and the descriptions of life at that time and in those places of the story were vivid and immersive. I didn’t want anything to interrupt me while I was reading, first because of all the interesting, detailed world-building and then because I was so caught up in what was going to happen with these characters that I’d become so invested.

I recommend DRAGON OF DENMARK to readers of historical fiction who enjoy mythical, magical, and paranormal elements, as well as those who enjoyed the recent Viking series on television.

Dragon of Denmark, by Jennifer Ivy Walker, is a compelling blend of fantasy, romance, and historical intrigue. The story introduces Ylva Rikardsdóttir, a skilled Celtic healer shunned by her Breton village of Saint-Suliac in Northwestern France. Her ostracism stems from her lineage—the illegitimate daughter of a ruthless Norse ruler who played a pivotal role in the Viking conquest of the region. After abandoning her a decade prior, Ylva’s father unexpectedly reappears, forcing her into a political marriage with Skårde Haraldsson, the bastard son of the Danish king. Bound by circumstances beyond their control, Ylva and Skårde must navigate their uneasy union. Can peace—or perhaps love—blossom between them?

The novel captivated me, particularly the relationship between Ylva and Skårde. Despite his fearsome moniker, “Skårde the Scourge,” the Dragon of Denmark, and a violent history steeped in bloodshed, Skårde surprises with his gentle demeanor toward Ylva. Their connection is underpinned by shared struggles: both are illegitimate children, discarded by their fathers only to be used as pawns in a strategic alliance. These parallels create a foundation for mutual understanding and gradually deepen their bond, even within the confines of an unwanted marriage.

The world-building is immersive, weaving together Norse and Celtic mythologies. Norse gods and goddesses coexist with Celtic deities, enriching the narrative with mystical depth. The inclusion of witches, elves, and shapeshifters adds to the fantastical allure. This interplay of myth and magic enhances the story’s texture, setting a unique stage for the characters’ journey. The prospect of exploring this richly imagined world further in the upcoming installments, Wolf of the Nordic Seas and Falcon of the Faroe Islands, excites me.

While Ylva’s visions were intriguing, they occasionally revealed pivotal events in advance, which made it challenging to fully feel the tension and immediacy of key moments. For example, knowing ahead of time how and when Skårde would be wounded reduced the emotional impact of the event itself. I felt the frequent use of italics to represent Ylva’s inner thoughts in the early chapters was somewhat distracting to me. Additionally, I think the repetition of details about runes and rituals at times slowed the pacing at times. However, these were small critiques in an otherwise captivating and immersive story that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Dragon of Denmark is an engaging start to a promising series. Jennifer Ivy Walker skillfully combines romance, mythology, and history, creating a tale that will appeal to fans of fantasy romance and Viking lore. I look forward to seeing how the saga unfolds in the books to come.

A prearranged marriage between Skårde, a renowned Viking warlord and winner of the title Dragon of Denmark, and Ylva, a Druid priestess, Celtic healer, and the illegitimate daughter of Richard the Fearless, the Viking Duke of Normandy, sets the stage for an action-packed story supported by Viking and French historical fiction, paranormal fantasy, magic, fierce battles, and a dazzling romance.

The research that must have gone into this fascinating tale is comprehensive and clearly defines the old writers adage, "write what you know." Authoress Jennifer Walker's career background and lifelong interests have provided a basis for numerous stories and novels that reveal what she knows and Dragon of Denmark is a brilliant example. A valuable trait in fiction writing is the ability to weave verisimilitude (a sense of reality) into a wholly fictional tale, that leaves the reader convinced of its authenticity, while understanding that it is, in fact, fiction. With valid historical perspective, in-depth knowledge of Viking lore, a real talent for descriptive scene setting without unnecessary word salad, and a truly amazing sense of characterization that includes dialog consistent with the times, Walker excels in bringing this fascinating world to life with expert veracity, imaginative creatures and magic, a keen sense of romantic and societal norms of the time.
Dragon of Denmark flows with a "can't turn the pages fast enough or put the book down" sense of reader's delight that demands looking for and reading every other book Jennifer Walker has written or will write in the future.

An arranged marriage for political power has Celtic healer and druidess Yiva in the crosshairs between the Vikings and a Frankish king. Can the alliance bring love or only destruction? Dragon of Denmark is a thrilling Viking romance with fantasy elements. This book has everything I’ve come to expect from Jennifer Ivy Walker: riveting narration, flawless world-building, adventure at every turn, and characters so vibrant, they leap from the page. Dragon at Denmark truly is unforgettable and impossible to put down.

I’ve read a lot of historical Viking romances recently. What I love about Dragon of Denmark is how Jennifer Ivy Walker delivers on the gritty nature of Vikings. They are not romantic or sympathetic marauders. They have a strict code which rules them. Reading Dragon of Denmark is like stepping back in time, with some Norse mythology thrown in.

The descriptive narration and world-building work together to draw the reader into the story. The narration is equal parts descriptive and emotional. The world-building is flawless and creates a world readers will find alluring and unforgettable.

The romance is a blending of tropes and genres. I fell in love with the hero and heroine, right along with them. Jennifer Ivy Walker weaves romance, no matter the setting or time period. It’s a wonderful experience. I look forward to reading more in this series.

My Rating: 5+ stars

I very much enjoyed entering the world author Jennifer Ivy Walker has created with her new Viking Historical Romance series, led off by Dragon of Denmark. This author has a very unique voice that relies on generous use of foreign language phrases, meticulous historical research, and lavish detail, all of which have won her books numerous awards and great praise from her readers. Settling in to read one of her stories is like traveling back in time to listen to an Arthurian tale or in this instance a cycle tale from Norse mythology.

This story tells of druid priestess Ylva, the illegitimate daughter of a Viking warlord, who has been neglected by him until he feels he can use her to further his attainment of power. Likewise, Skarde is the illegitimate son of the Danish king who has spent his life trying to gain his father’s respect by becoming a fearless warrior. These two come together unwillingly through an arranged marriage, and what follows is a tale for the ages.

A cast of varied and interesting supporting characters make this read even more enjoyable. There are ruthless rulers, valiant warriors, light elves, and Norse workers of magic, some of whom I liked as much as the hero and heroine. There is plenty of herbal, crystal, and Norse spells and the invocation of the ancient gods which lends the Paranormal feel. Take your time with this one. I did, and was glad I savored it.
