Love and Hockey #1

The Boyfriend Goal

Rate this book
A forbidden romance with my brother’s hockey-playing teammate wasn’t on my to-do list when I moved across the country.

Neither was getting locked out of a friend’s place wearing next to nothing.
Or spending the night with the sexy stranger who rescues me.
But I’m trying to get out of my comfort zone so getting out of the rest of my clothes with him seems like a good way to start.
In the morning, I learn the filthy-mouthed man with the talented hands is not only the hotshot new hockey player on my brother’s team: he’s also – wait for it – my brand new roommate.
I’m a good student turned good librarian. A rule-follower. I’m not the kind of girl who does complicated flings. So we agree to another rule: friends-only.
It’s not easy though. Wes is bossy, flirty and generous.
He gives me rides to work.
Pitches in at my library’s fundraiser.
Takes care of me when I get hurt.
And looks at me like I’m the only one.
Soon, I’m falling hard for my brother’s teammate.
Especially when Wes comes to my door and tells me exactly how he’d like to break our rules.
Every single one.

Josie (h) and Wesley's (H) romance was at times sweet and easy and other times uncertainly angsty. There's a lovely initial chemistry between them that results in a ONS that leave both wishing for more, until a surprise that Wesley's actually Josie's brother's hockey teammate and that they'll be temporary roommates while Josie is working in the area on a library grant. Because of these situations, they agree to a roomie agreement that nothing else physical can occur between them, which of course is going to be severely tested. The brother's teammate/friend premise sometimes goes really toxically and I didn't think that happens here. There are some "you can't touch my sister" initial comments and worries on Josie and Wesley's parts about how their attraction could affect the team, but when Josie's brother is treated like an adult and presented with their relationship, he just cares that his sister is happy. Angst comes about more from other aspects of what's going on in their lives.

Written in first person, dual POV. No ow/om drama and both are experienced (H not a manwhore and h had only been with one other person).

Josie isn't just temporarily in the area, she's also working on completing a bucket list of sorts left to her by her deceased aunt, who was the only one who seemed to understand Josie. Because of this, there is a vein of grief that runs through the book. Also because of this list, there are challenges to be faced, some humorous and some hilarious, but also with some steaminess resulting when Wesley and Josie do things together and the sexual tension and temptation become too much. Josie also finds herself desperate to stay in the place where she's building connections, but runs into some obstacles with that at the same time that Wesley runs into some difficulties in his game.

This story has quite a few steamy scenes and some rough sex. This couple also have some sexting sessions and a bit of role-play thrown in. The emotional intimacy is built just as strongly as the physical intimacy between them, helped by the close proximity of living together. Though their communication sometimes leans towards the passive and they give each other space at times instead of pushing to have the hard discussions. Wesley in particular is bossy in and out of the bedroom, but has some scenes where he very much gets in his own head and overwhelmed leading to a development in the third act that I found frustrating. Both characters are extremely likable though so you're invested in them figuring out what they need to, esp when they make it harder on themselves than is strictly necessary. Plus, they're so cute together when they're clicking - baking together, volunteering together, and being its each other's cheerleader and strong support.

The writing is snappy in some places and stilted in others, esp when it comes to descriptive language and internal monologues (imo). I appreciated that both Josie and Wesley have friendships that are important to them, though their family dynamics were a source of frustration for each of them, with only some resolution. If this all sounds kind of uneven, that's how I felt while I was reading too. Now some of that could be chalked up to my current reading mood (which is crappy to be honest) and some to the fact that this author is hit and miss for me. I picked this up because friends have been enjoying the author's hockey books recently and this specific book had high ratings from a couple (so please take this lukewarm reaction with the grain of salt it deserves).

The ending is HFN and cute. The list is as complete as it'll get and the two start a new list as they settle into their new life firmly as a couple and in love. There were hints at a couple of couples within the side characters, but the epilogue more strongly teases the next couple. I don't think I'll be continuing the series, but I think other friends would enjoy this read and the setup for the other books more than I did.

This was one of the sweetest One Night Stand romances I've read in a while. The way Josie and Wes fell into one another had me kicking my feet. The compatibility of two strangers passing in the night but feeling so drawn to one another... it's a special kind of magic.

Unfortunately, when they find out Wes is her brother's teammate and subsequently becomes her benevolent roomy, well, things get complicated. But their chemistry is comes so easy and it's harder to fight it then to just roll with it. There were all these little moments of pining and it wasn't only for the physical things. They were vulnerable during that one night and it's not easy to reel all those feelings back in.

What really solidified this as a new favorite from Lauren Blakely for me was how supportive they are of each other. Even when it might hurt themselves. That kind of selflessness is so beautiful to see.

This book was the perfect mix of humor, heart, and sexiness. It was hard to put it down which is always a good feeling. It even had me tearing up at the end. These two were soul mates and it was so enjoyable to watch that unfold.

There was very low angst, even though there were real challenges for them. Which means none of the conflict felt overblown and was very grounded.

Narrated in the duet style by Erin Mallon & Connor Crais. They absolutely killed it. I always recommend you consume Lauren Blakely via audio as she chooses only the best.

This is my first book by Lauren Blakely, and let me just say, I had a blast reading it! 😊 The Boyfriend Goal is a delightful mix of humor, heart, and spice. Imagine getting locked out in practically nothing and then spending the night with a super-hot stranger, only to discover he’s your new roommate and your brother's teammate! Talk about awkward but thrilling! The chemistry between Josie and Wes is off the charts, and it had me giggling and swooning all at once.

✧ Roommates to Lovers
✧ Teammate's Little Sister
✧ One Night Stand
✧ Hockey Romance 🏒
✧ Forbidden Romance 💘
✧ Forced Proximity 💕
✧ Golden Retriever MMC
✧ Quirky Librarian FMC 📚
No Regrets Bucket List ✅

The story's flow is pretty smooth, and I adored the way these two supported each other through thick and thin. There wasn’t much unnecessary drama, which was refreshing. Instead, their connection felt natural, with all those little moments of pining and vulnerability making my heart melt. 💖

However, I did feel that some parts were a tad cliché, especially in the writing. The whole brother’s teammate dynamic could have been fleshed out a bit more, particularly the relationship between Wes and Josie’s brother. It would have added more depth to the story, but hey, it didn’t ruin the fun!

And yes, the spice level? Oh, it’s there, alright! 🥵 Wes and Josie know how to heat things up without going overboard, and their playful banter was everything. Their connection was sizzling yet sweet, and those spicy scenes were just the right amount of steamy without overpowering the story.

But as much as I enjoyed the ride, I wouldn’t exactly say it's a must-read. It’s not one of those books that will stick with you forever, but it’s definitely a fun, sweet, and spicy read. Perfect for when you need something light and uplifting! 😄

I’m quite excited Max & Everly’s book! Can't wait to see what’s next! ✨

hey, if you’re reading this review, this is your sign to add Lauren Blakely to your must read authors list.

—roommates to lovers
—teammates little sister
—spicy af
—hockey romance

There’s something LB does with her books and that’s mixing spice, banter, fun, and an addicting read all into one book.

I love every single one of her books, not only are they such a fun spicy time, but they are memorable and each one has its own unique characteristics each time. The Boyfriend Goal was a perfect end of summer hockey romance, I loved the characters, Wesley and Josie, and their connection and especially loved the spice.

If you need a hockey romance to add to your end of summer TBR, this one is a must read.

Pre-read: I am in ✨DESPERATE✨need of a hockey romance right now and this piqued my interest immediately! ❄️🏒

3.5 🌟
EXACTLY what I needed!! I wish the hockey 🏒 was a lot more prominent in this if that makes sense. They talk about it but I wanted more action from it, like close games that had me at the edge of my seat, where my heart is beating faster📈you know? Other than that though, this book was a blast 🤩! It was super fast paced and fun and I really enjoyed our mc’s first meeting.
The third act thing was kind of random if I’m honest🤨. I was kind of lost about what even happened but maybe i’m just stupid haha 😂I will definitely be reading the rest of this series soon and I am frothing at the mouth to read Everly and Max’s story like 🤤Anyway overall it was so fun and it was really what I wanted!

“It’s the golden rule of being on a team. You don’t bang a teammate’s sister. Well, unless you plan to marry her.”

💭 what I loved about this one:
- “we shouldn’t do that again” and again and again… 🤭
- I did NOT know the mmc cleaning the fmc's glasses would be so… 😮‍💨
- their “fuck it” moment
- confessions that they both get off to each other 😮‍💨

I LOVED this book! Hands down my new favorite book by Lauren. The audiobook was phenomenal with two amazing narrators: Erin Mallon & Connor Crais.

This book had some of my favorite tropes and had me busting out laughing. The FMC was so funny and unapologetically herself while the MMC was a bit more reserved but they balanced each other out so well. Their chemistry & banter was off the charts good.

Thank you to Lauren & her team for both the ARC & ALC.

This is a case of "it's too good to be true". The thing is, Wes and Josie are perfect together. From the off, they're great friends, have great banter, are open and honest, caring, and compassionate. They have scorching hot chemistry. They get each other in ways no one else does.

So what's the problem, right? This sounds like a great thing, romance books are supposed to be about people finding their perfect match.

But when I say I could sense the 3rd act breakup coming a MILE away...

It was going too well for them.

But here's the thing. There is NO REASON this book needed to follow that particular story format. The breakup that happens is SO unbelievably unnatural it threw me right out of the book. To the point where I didn't even really care when they sorted their shit out and got back together.

That 3rd act breakup really didn't make any sense. It felt like Blakely was trying too hard to find some reason to split these two people who are clearly perfect together up. Sometimes I feel like authors fall slave to a formula. So they have to create drama out of nowhere in order to fit their story into a certain mold. In cases like this, it just throws everything off, because it causes characters to act entirely out of their usual nature.

The issue in this one is so dumb I don't even know what to make of it. The two of them get together, they're HAPPY together, but Josie needs to find a permanent job or else she just HAS to go back to Maine. Nevermind that her beau is a PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE WORTH MILLIONS. She's not on a deadline, I'm sure Wes would be MORE than happy to let her crash at his house until she found another form of employment? And even if, for whatever odd reason, Wes wasn't willing, Josie has a brother who's super protective of her and who, I'm certain, wouldn't mind helping out....So what the fuck???

So, supposedly, the uncertainty of whether or not she's gonna leave in 5 weeks is doing both their heads in, and making it so Wes can't focus on the ice. He gets pulled off first string after losing several games and he's all down on himself and his dad blames the girl and is being hard on him and instead of finally stepping up to his dad and being like "you need to shut the fuck up and back off" he lets him get into his head.

Of course Josie realizes what's going on, but blames herself for it--because there's always a martyr in these sorts of goofy stories. So she suggests they back off each other so he can focus on his game. And like an idiot, he agrees. 🙄😒

Like does this really, honestly, seem like a problem worth writing a breakup scene about? Be honest with yourselves. There are SO MANY WAYS to solve this shit.

Thankfully the 'breakup' isn't a hard and fast split, and after 3 days they're back on and more loved up than ever before. Oh, and the best part of all of this: the last 10% of the book involves them in a long distance relationship. Yeah--you know--one of those potential solutions that could have been had instead of the completely unnecessary 4 chapter angst-fest we got?

Outside of this ONE THING, this story was actually really cute. The atmosphere, the banter, the fact that both parties actually spend time with other people outside their couple, the list, the letters they write each other... all of it worked. I just wish the 2 characters I met in chapter 2 didn't get a temporary lobotomy in chapter 41.

THIS WAS SO GOOD!!! Lauren never disappoints.

I loved everything about this and let me tell you, if you can listen to the audiobook, DO IT. Thank me later. Good god did Connor Crais & Erin Mallon nail this.

The Boyfriend Goal has pretty much all of my favorite tropes:
- forced proximity/roommates
- one night stand-to-oh shit you're in my life now
- opposites attract
- so!! much!! mutual!! pining!!

Go read it right now!

At first I didn’t really feel like Josie and Wesley were going to have much chemistry. But oh boy was I wrong! I will say usually in this type of trope the brother is quite controlling and not very fair but I really liked how this one played out. I just kind of wish there was more communication between Wesley and Josie’s brother since they are supposed to be friends. I feel like it was kind of rushed and just thrown in there.
I really like the amount of detail about dyslexia in this book and the resources that can help with this challenge that a lot of people have in their life. I also really liked how important libraries were in this book and how they can offer so many helpful services to people than some might think.
The growth of each character was really well paced and very easy to follow along with. And the side characters were honestly some of my favorites!
I really like how unique this couple was and how it didn’t have the usual unnecessary drama that you see in a lot of books with these tropes. This was a great book and I can’t wait for the next book in this series!

First off, WOW. This book was genuinely phenomenal. I don’t get to say this a lot, but this is a new favorite hockey romance. I’ve read a couple of Lauren Blakely’s hockey romances in the past and I enjoyed them and recommend them. But this… a whole new level for her.

The Boyfriend Goal is sweet, funny, spicy, and heartfelt. I even shed a few happy tears. We have brother’s teammate, forced proximity via roommates, one night stand, learning to live after a loved one is gone, and a beautiful overall romcom love story.

I have so many great things to say about this book and this might already be a bit longer than my normal review, but my fingers keep flying. I think Wes and Josie were phenomenal main characters. Wes is a book boyfriend that is above and beyond. Watching him go on this journey of truly living after a loved one is gone was so beautiful. This entire plot line of the story was beautiful and wonderful and I’m tearing up just thinking about it as I write this.

As for Josie, I just love that precious girl’s girl and fictional human, she is just so quirky and brave without seeing it in herself for the longest time… I love her. So many readers will relate to Josie whether they are overly passionate and feel like “a lot’ or just struggling to live life to the fullest, I think there is a Josie in all of us! And as a neck scarf enthusiast, I see you girl and I feel you. Pop off!

One last thing I love about this book is the Lauren Blakely of it all. After doing an interview with her, it’s so fun to see how she puts herself in her books. Lauren, I adore you and appreciate you!

Overall, I highly recommend this book, like SO HIGHLY. It’s available in all your favorite formats, even audiobook! Huge thank you to Good Girls Pr and Lauren Blakely for the opportunity to read The Boyfriend Goal a little early!

DNF at 67%.

It started off well enough, but then I started losing interest. The story flow felt slow, and the characters were on the dull side. I shouldn't have to force myself to read a book.

Too many books, too little time. I'm moving on.

Feel like this book was written specially for me, it just ticked so many boxes. Even as I was reading (listening in this case), made me feel so giddy and just loved all of the little acts Wes does for Josie.

Just loved the whole premise of a one night stand, where they were secretly trying to find the other afterwards. Yet, turns out they’re thrust together as roommates. Perfection.

“Bend the rules, not break them…”

They’re just so sweet with each other and give just what the other needs. The little letters they leave each other is a sweet touch.

“I like your notes. They’re a window into you…they’re kind of my favourite thing to read”

Enjoyed the secondary plot of her completing the list left by her late Aunt.

“Like a blueprint for becoming your happiest self’

Another story with some problematic parents, and nice little way to add some minor conflict to the story.

Love all the little parts of this story. Even something simple, him washing his hands when he comes home and them going to the wc afterwards. Seems more realistic and considerate on his behalf.

“He stopped to wash his hand before he came to me. And this thoughtful gesture makes me…”

It’s becoming more difficult to trust a 4+ rating on Goodreads. The characters and plot fell flat. The dialogue was juvenile, which made it difficult to believe the H&h were developing genuine long-lasting chemistry. The list was groan-inducing. It just felt like the audience for this book was maybe for readers newer to the category. I promise there are sports romances, hockey romances in particular, that feature characters that are better developed and plots that are engaging - page turning even. Needless to say, it was not what I was expecting when I saw “NYT bestseller” on the cover and a 4+ rating on GR.

Sad but true.

Jesus...

This story grabbed me from the start with its intense opening and kept me hooked as it developed. The growth of emotions, attraction, and support between the characters is done so well. The combination of a hockey player and a librarian is surprisingly perfect, and I was thoroughly invested in their journey.

Their communication was particularly striking. They broke the typical rules and expectations in a way that felt both exciting and authentic. Every interaction felt real, making their relationship all the more compelling.

I found myself laughing out loud and swooning at different points. The balance of humor and deep emotion was just right, and their dynamic felt incredibly genuine.

This story really resonated with me. It blends humor, heartfelt moments, and a refreshing take on breaking boundaries. I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for a story that’s both engaging and deeply moving.

LOVED THIS! I love basically anything set in San Francisco and all of Lauren's hockey books make me desperate for SF to actually have their own hockey team (sorry San Jose Sharks, the drive is just too far for me).

Wesley and Josie's love for each other grew so organically. It wasn't too insta-love, even if their attraction did start with a bang 😉

I really loved that even though Josie is a quirky librarian, she is not a manic pixie dream girl. She broke out of her comfort zone and had her own character development that happened with and without Wesley.

Thank you Lauren for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion!

Then let’s break that roomie rule so I can fuck you dirty.

What a cute roommates, hockey-captain’s-little-sister romance!

She blinks. “Your sister’s dog? You have a framed photo of your sister’s dog?”
“He’s cute,” I say easily, but maybe defensively.
Shaking her head, Josie advances toward me. “Shut up. Nothing makes me want to lose my clothes faster than that.”

Lauren Blakely’s been on my radar for a while so I’m happy that this was my first since it was super fun.

“Can you bend me over the bed and fuck me hard?” He breathes out in a rush of air, full of arousal as his eyes flash, like he’s won the jackpot at the slot machines. Then, in a rasp of a voice, he says, “Josie, I can and I fucking will.”

This book was about trying new things, overcoming preconceived notions, and living life to the fullest.

"I’ll give you a ride.”
She grins ever so hopefully. “In your boxer briefs?”
“You wish.”
“Well, yeah.”

This book was about a journey after death and grief and how to move on while not forgetting—how to live your life and remember those who aren’t in it anymore.

"I don’t feel like a dirty secret,” she says, curling a fist around my shirt. “But you should keep fucking me dirty in secret.”

I looooved the chemistry between Josie and Wes. Even though they got together super fast in the beginning (which they needed to for the plot to work, lmao), it felt organic enough. Later, as they lived together as roomies, it just made their relationship even better.

But he’s no longer in the mood to indulge me, it seems, since he spins me around and bends me over the mattress. “Hands on the bed. Ass in the air,” he instructs.

I *absolutely* loved that Wes didn’t want to hide their relationship for too long, I always find that with the little sister trope they always hide it until it’s found out and then, you know, dRaMa.

“Meet me there at ten and we’ll grab food.”
Ten? What, are we still in college? I like to be in jammies at nine-thirty on the dot while enjoying a cheap merlot and debating the best book-to-film adaptations of all time in a Reddit group.

Anyway, I really liked Josie, mainly because she was a book lover and librarian! She was super focused on accessible reading which I love! There were tons of funny moments (I am a big fan of comedy in books) and sweet moments too.

“Because you have done so much for me. And I don’t want to feel like all I do is take.”
“Who told you you’re not good enough?”
That wasn’t what I expected. “What do you mean?”
“Who said that what you do for someone else isn’t worthwhile?”

Wes’s struggles with his, well, life, and what he would be without hockey, his dad basically forcing him to eat a super strict diet that gave *eating disorder* vibes, and his general insecurities made him a great MMC.

For a split second I gaze down at her gorgeous mouth, then give all the way in, “Fuck it.” I let go of her thigh, cover her throat with my palm, and yank her toward me.

Thank you Lauren for this eARC!

It was fine. Two nice, boring people with boring, easily solved problems fall in love. The adventures with her bucket list were fun and their flirting was good too, but I lost interest once they got together and then manufactured their own problems that were then solved within literal days. Extremely low stakes overall made it kind of a snooze fest.

And it's 100% a ME problem, but to read about her struggles to find a permanent library job while my own MLIS sits unused because of that very same problem was ... not great lol.

It started so cute but then, I'm not sure. It's still cute, but way too much is happening there.

I loved their meet-cute but then comes Christian. If you do the "brothers friend" trope and want to make it work, having an overprotective brother is kinda the key. But Christian is so fucking weird. Oh, your sister needs a place to stay; why don't you ask for fucking hockey teammates if they wanna be roommates with her? Sure, cause this 10 million dollar salary can definitely not afford another way to help her.
Like, I'm sorry, but wtf is that? Even if you do it that way, there are ways of doing it. Christian is overprotective but then doesn't know his sister, it's such a weird mix.

In general, the main problem of this book is that there's way too much stuff going on. Roommates, teammates' little sister, Josie's job/moving away, her family issues, Wesley's dad issues, all this stuff at once just doesn't work. I saw lots of potential, but I feel like so many things started, and none of it had a really satisfying ending. If you had just kept the "brother's teammate" trope going and built the dilemma more about that and then added her job issues or his dad issues, that would have been more than enough stuff going on there.

Pls just choose one thing and that's enough. Not again with all these issues resolved. The next one is coming, but you could just make it a nice ending thing. It wasn't a bad ending. But was the Boston part really necessary? No, not for me. Just a simple happy ever after, that's all I want, thank you.

It's just really boring. Lol if someone wants similar to this but shorter and more fun - Mr swoony by piper Rayne is a good bet.
