I’m being forced to move in with my brother’s best friend.
After my life falls apart, the last person I want to face is my childhood crush. Much less live with him.
Unfortunately for me, my overprotective brother and his equally overprotective best friend show up on my doorstep and don’t take no for an answer.
I put up my best fight, but it’s no use. Soon enough, I’m boarding a plane with them and my newborn son.
All I want is to pick up the pieces of my life alone, but everywhere I turn it seems like Maverick Carter is there waiting to help.
He makes it difficult to keep my distance, but I know I have to. Because he deserves so much better than me.
But He’s My Roommate is a single mom, brother’s best friend romantic comedy for readers who like to feel all the emotions. It’s a closed-door romance, with all the sizzling chemistry you love, minus the explicit scenes. It’s the final book in the But He’s a Carter Brother series, a series based around four strong, protective brothers finding love.
This book had all the tropes, I love the single mom, brother’s best friend, roommates tropes but the execution didn’t do it for me. The slow burn was way too slow, to the point where I was bored and zoning out. There wasn’t enough emotional depth or drama to keep me hooked, and the closed-door romance made the story feel a little too safe.
I’m all for sizzle with no spice, but the burner was completely off here. While I liked Maverick’s character and how supportive he was, the pacing and overall lack of excitement made this book feel like a chore to get through. If you’re looking for a super low-angst romance with a sweet ending, you might enjoy it more than I did.
Annah Conwell is a total romcom genius! She's become one of my favorite clean romance authors, and I always make sure to read her books as soon as they come out.
This last book in the Carter series was a real treat, with lovable characters and a sweet romance. Maverick, the last Carter brother, finally gets his story, and it’s so worth the wait! He’s super supportive and protective of Evie, who’s been through a lot, and watching their relationship grow was so heartwarming.
One of the best parts of the book was seeing characters from previous stories make appearances, with the ending tying up all their stories beautifully. Though it's bittersweet to say goodbye to the Carter brothers, I’m already looking forward to her next book!

3.75 Stars!
I only read the first and last book of this series, but I really really seem to like this series, they’re so entertaining. Listening to this book’s audiobook is making me want to read the entire series again!
My secret specialty is that I pique interest in a series but don't end up reading them chronologically, especially if they are interconnected. Otherwise, if the case were different, it would be very strange.
Annah always hits in her romcoms for me. She just writes what I'm looking for. This is the 4th and final book in the series, and I'm sad it's over. I have LOVED getting to know the Carter's brothers and their love stories. This one is Mav's story and its best friends sister, single mom, roommates, a man who wants to take care of his gal kind of love story, and it was ADORABLE! I'm a sucker for single parents finding love. For content, this is clean in that there is no sex or language used at all. There is passionate kissing though and slight innuendos, so if that's a boundary for you, maybe don't read the series but that's all the spice level you'll find. I highly recommend all her books but this series stands to be my favorite she's written so far.
Am I am mess. Yes . Am I quite litterally sobbing . Yes This is it folks. Five stars . Five stars . Five stars . The whole Carter gang is in this book There are so many Easter eggs And did I mention it’s brother best friend
So I listened to this as an audiobook and it definitely didn’t help the story at all. I didn’t enjoy listening to the narrators.
Right off the bat, I strongly disliked where this story was headed. Also I was very confused as to how this plot made any logical sense?! Who in their right mind makes decisions like these?
So I will admit I jumped into this series with the last book and that potentially may have affected my feelings, but I highly doubt it because this book was just flat out not good. The plot line = horrible! That’s harsh, I know, but it’s honestly how I felt.
We start off with our MMC, Maverick, dashing to the airport to catch a flight with his best friend to help said best friend’s little sister, who happens to be married with a kid. That’s a lot, I know. Anyway, so Maverick doesn’t actually know WHY they’re going to see this sister, only that she apparently needs help. Why do we care about this best friend’s sister who is MARRIED with a KID?! IDK!! Well we find out that SURPRISE!! She’s actually divorced now because her husband cheated on her. So she’s left with a kid to raise on her own. Does she need help? Certainly! Does she ask for help? NO! Because who would want to help out a poor mom raising a kid on her own?! 🤦🏻♀️ The logic = not there.
Need I go on? I don’t care if they liked each other in their childhood. It’s just weird (and WRONG) to be carrying on for a married woman. Well, now apparently she’s not married so let’s jump into another relationship! SO HEALTHY! (Heavy on the sarcasm 🙄) Honey, I don’t care that, “Oh, this was always the guy for me”. If that was the case, then why didn’t you marry HIM instead of the other dude?!
And don’t even get me started on Drew 🤦🏻♀️ Apparently he’s just an idiot, who doesn’t think, to everyone. Maverick is constantly talking down about him to Evie, like how are they even best friends?!
Ugh EVIE 😑 I. COULD. NOT. STAND. HER. Girl, you made your choices so you gotta deal with the consequences, BUT if people offer to help you, LET THEM! Like seriously! I can’t feel sorry for you when there are literally people TRYING to help you! She feels like a pick me girl 🤦🏻♀️
I was rolling my eyes so much while listening to this audiobook. Everything was SO over the top! Like if something was bad, then it was the WORST!! If it was good, then it was the BEST!! Ugh…I just couldn’t handle it! 🙄
I received a complimentary advanced listener copy of this audiobook from NetGalley and Dreamscape Media. All opinions listed are purely my own.
Very cute! I loved reading this series, and this book had me giggling and smiling. I especially appreciated how patient and caring Maverick was with Evie. This is what I call a well-executed friends-to-lovers trope! 🥰
It was like watching your best friend who just got out of an emotionally abusive relationship and just had a baby by said abuser. She is depressed and an emotional wreck and needs therapy (as well as postpartum medication/help). She’s a complete mess and can’t go a day without a breakdown. She invites you out to lunch and tells you that instead of getting help for any of those things, she’s starting a new relationship. You try to suggest that there are other things that might be helpful before jumping into a relationship and she scoffs and looks at you like you’re unsupportive and crazy. That sad and wide eyed look of disbelief on your face is how I felt about Evie this entire book. I just couldn’t get into their relationship because as sweet as Maverick was, Evie’s emotional state was so unstable that the relationship progression felt too fast. It felt like Evie’s entire personality was her hurt and stress, which made Maverick’s interest in her feel more like a savior complex than anything else. I wish we had gotten to know who Evie is outside of her trauma and stress to help explain Maverick’s attraction to her a bit better.
Don’t get me wrong. I felt bad for Evie and really wanted good things for her, but the romance just felt like it would have been better if more time had passed and Evie had gotten help first.
This novel is actually book four in the But He’s a Carter Brother series. I have also read book one. I had no trouble jumping into this one, even though I do plan to go back and read the middle books of the series because I like all of the characters so much.
The narration was wonderfully done! The voices for both characters were just right and I loved listening to the dual narration. And the storyline just captured my heart! I loved that it was essentially an older brother’s best friend novel, yet these two were also friends in the past in their own right, as well. And finally, it was a “he takes care of her” scenario, as well. Even though Evie pushed back a lot as Mav tried to help her and give her the stable support she needed. I liked the way she eventually softened and realized how much he cared for her.
This story was packed with sweet and swoony moments and also moments of healing. When both Mav and Evie separately began to realize that they loved each other and when Evie realized that Mav actually shared the feelings she was having…so perfect! And the fact that Mav jumped right in and loved Evie’s little baby boy…well, it was beautiful!
I received a complimentary copy of this audio book. All opinions are my own.
Liked it, the 60% to 80% was extremely cute. I really liked how they gave each other the chance to become more.
I wish this book had a good balance between the main characters and what they do. Maverick went to work like once (that is was mentioned) I never read about Evie looking for a job (even though a the end was mentioned she got a few jobs thank to some photo shoots. We had a few moment with Maverick and the baby but the baby didn't really feel like a character and in some moments i totally forgot the baby was around. I don't love, I love the characters but this one lacked something for me.
Still a good and sweet read though love I'm happy for that!
Ahh what a beautiful story!! 😍😍😍 Annah Conwell knows how to write a romance that in turns make you swoon and ache for the characters. Everything about this book (as usual) was perfect!! I’d been intrigued for Maverick’s story with each new hint at him and something being really wrong with his “friend” Evie, and am so happy to have finally read it. Evie went through so much but was able to find healing and happiness, and Maverick was such a good, strong man who was willing to do whatever it took to help her. Also baby Beckham was adorable! 😍
I always love seeing all the banter between the 4 brothers, and reaching the end of all of their stories is so satisfying yet bittersweet! Grayson as always never failed to make me laugh. 😂 And the epilogue with a final scene for each couple was beautiful! 😍😭 Can’t recommend this series and this author enough!!
/I received an ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own/
This was an amazing finale for the Carter Brother series! I loved them all. Maverick has known Evie a long time and has always cared for her and wanted to protect her. She moves away, gets married, has a baby, and gets divorced. She is at the lowest of lows whenever her brother convinces her to move back home and accept help from him & their childhood friend Mav. Maverick steps up and takes such good care of her and her son even though he didn’t have to. He is such a great friend and gives her the space she needs and is so patient. This was a wonderful love story between 2 childhood friends. This one was my favorite! Second favorite: But He’s My Grumpy Neighbor.
—Quotes ✨ “I’ve seen it all before,” I say. His grin grows at my double meaning. He turns back to face the front. “Maybe you’ll see something new this time.” I think I already am. And I have no idea how to feel about it. ✨ Instead, I want to get closer, to pull at the bricks she has around her heart until I see what’s behind the walls. What I’ve found has been nothing short of breathtaking. ✨ “It’s impossible for me to want anyone other than you, Wilder.” ✨ I tip her chin up. “If you think for one second that you haven’t made my life immeasurably better by simply existing, then you’re mistaken.” ✨ I’m grateful for that time though, because I can say I’ve known life both with and without you, and I never want to feel what it’s like without you ever again.”

“If you think for one second that you haven’t made my life immeasurably better by simply existing? Then you’re mistaken.”
“She presses a soft kiss to my lips. ‘I’m not going anywhere, Carter. We’ve got time.’ I hold her tight. ‘Forever isn’t enough when it comes to you, Wilder.’”
* Oh to be in the world of the Carter brothers again 😍 * This poor girl * Aww! Who knew I’d love Mav so much? (I mean, he is a Carter so of course I do hehe) * Yes to men who are big and tough enough to let their woman fall apart when she needs to 👏 * Nooo. You don’t have to do it alone! * Not his conversation with Beckham 😭🫶 * This family seriously just has my whole heart * They’re just so cuuute
First of all, can we talk about that EPILOGUE?! It was absolutely everything and I’m just so sad and happy all at once. This series and the Carter family is just so incredible and it’s bittersweet for it to come to an end.
I loved Evie and her journey to heal and find love. She’s so sweet and I loved her with Beckham. My heart hurt for her and all she went through, but I was cheering for her!
And Maverick? Such a gooey sweetheart! But truly, aren’t all the Carter brothers? I loved watching his friendly love and care turn to romantic love and care. He was just so gone for Evie and Beckham and I loved every second.
“Just because you need a little help doesn’t make you helpless.”
“I wanted to do more than teach her. I wanted to taste her. To unravel her so she could feel as utterly undone as me.”
“It’s impossible for me to want anyone other than you, Wilder.”
This is the last book in the Carter Brothers series and I can’t talk about it bc it makes me sad ☹️ but here’s the deets: brother’s best friend single mom forced proximity found family closed door fall setting
I think this might be my favorite in the series??? I just loved it so much 🥺 I love a forced proximity/roommates trope and I’ve been waiting for this book since we see a glimpse of these characters in previous books. It was so sweet and the emotional depth was so good. The pacing and slow burn was also perfect!!
The way Maverick was so patient w Evie was so sweet and how he took care of her and Beckham made me 🥲 and Evie’s healing journey throughout the book was so sweet to read 🥺
I am so sad this series is over but hope to see more of these characters in future books 🤭
*you don’t have to read the other books in the series to read this one but I do recommend it!!! The other books are so good as well!!
I tried really hard to like this one but it disappointed😔.
The FMC wasn’t very likable imho. She wasn’t kind to the MMC at first, never accepted help, & didn’t seem to have much of a personality besides being wild when she was younger & now having baggage. I feel like the love between her & Maverick was kind of instant & didn’t really grow. Looking back after finishing the book, I’m like: did anything really happen in it?
Also— maybe it was just my mood but I picked up on so much language that supposedly was thought by Maverick that immediately made my brain go- this was written by a woman. (i.e. hero thinks that the heroine makes him feel “incandescent.” What guy is going to think that? Lol.)
This isn’t my favorite trope but I’ve read another book similar to this & really liked it. This was a fun series for the most part & this one was my least favorite.
I do like this author though so I’ll definitely read more from her💕
I’ve been putting off the last book of the Carter Brothers because if I don’t finish it isn’t over, right? 🥹
Evie and Maverick’s story is vying for Adrian & Juliette’s position of personal favourite. The theme, the heart, the family dynamic… it’s just so precious.
Watching all the Carters get their HEAs warms my heart—I’m not ready to say goodbye, but what a high note to end on! Annah is the best. 💛
Content: cheating (not MCs); Evie’s ex-husband was controlling; kissing only (passionate making out which was the only thing I wasn’t crazy about, haha)
A perfect cozy rom-com. Single parent, friends to lovers, and fabulous side characters. I started with the last book in the series and now I need to read the rest. Narrators were perfect!
I received a copy from Netgalley and the publisher.
This might be my favorite out of the series, I love the single mom trope apparently. I am a sucker for single dad, so I’m not surprised. I’m sad the series is over but I loved visiting the family bond in each book.
i could not put this book down it was amazing i love how the author kept it clean but still had the story super captivating and fulfilling pls read this book rn i beg
This love story has been teased since the first book so I’m glad to finally read it. Cute trope of girl falling for brother’s best friend, but made better because it was more like childhood friends?
Overall, a decent simple romcom series— emphasis on the simple because all the “tragic” or “difficult” back stories and conflicts were so… distant? Easily resolved? Very much angst-free. All four Carter brothers are green forests and I loved the ending epilogue that gave them each one last snippet.
Tropes: • Forced Proximity • Single Mom • Found Family
Thoughts: Y'all. I am so sad this series is over. If you're looking for found family dynamics, cozy vibes and lighthearted reads this series is so sweet! I loved how precious and thoughtful Maverick was in his care of Evie. My heart feels happy that all the brothers now have their loves.
I really loved the final Carter Siblings installment and the joint epilogue at the end, but I felt with so much build up to this relationship and Evie’s story that it was underwhelming. I just felt like we didn’t have enough information on her history and her past relationship and there was drama with her ex but it almost felt swept under the rug even though it was a huge part of her story, I felt myself waiting for the big emotional dump that never came. Overall, I loved Maverick and his patience and love and consistency for Evie and their “it’s always been you” trope and the closed door romance of it all.
This story follows the final Carter sibling, our MMC, Maverick, and his best friend’s little sister that’s basically always been family, our FMC, Evie. Over the past three books we’ve seen Mav worry over Evie as we’ve learned she has a toxic husband that’s manipulated her to cutting off everyone she loves and then got her pregnant while chasing her dream of fashion photography in NYC. The book starts with Mav and best friend and Evies brother, Drew, flying to NYC to ultimately bring Evie back to Georgia. Upon arriving they find out Evie had divorced her husband and had a few month old son, Beckham, and lost her job while they were in town. She doesn’t want anyone’s pity or help because she thinks she is too damaged and not worthy of love and her ex, Ezra, has manipulated her into believing it. Maverick gets through to her to move in with him in his farmhouse and quickly realizes he’s always been protective of Evie but might actually have feelings for her. The two of them have mutual pining and a few close tender moments before Evie finally declares her love for Mav after realizing how much he cares for her and her son and wants them to be a family. It was tender and I’m glad it happened at like 70% through so we got to see them together and happy for a good part of the book.
Something I wished was touched on more is that they both came from their own respective relationship traumas of being cheated on and could relate and process together but really it was just a quick mention and not really talked about again. I feel like the author leaned a little too much on the fact that we’d heard so much about them that we didn’t get the same care in their emotional growth as we did with all the others in the series. I’m so confused why we had all the Ezra drama at the end to not really see anything unfold except Mav punch him and Drew tell Evie he’s proud of her.
Truly it was a GREAT closed door romance with fun romcom friends to lovers banter. The story was sweet and had good pacing, I just wanted more emotional breakthroughs than small internal monologues about things being processed. I am wholly obsessed with the Carter brothers as a whole and will be reading every single one of Annah Conwell’s other books.
