Hemlock Harbor #1

A Grumpy Witch's Guide to Finding Love

Rate this book
Boyfriendless and covenless, Zoe is losing her magic. In an attempt to regain her powers without forming a new coven she moves into a house built on a ley line. What Zoe isn’t prepared for is a vegan vampire, a teenage ghost and a handsome out-of-towner werewolf to come crashing through her carefully constructed walls. She doesn't need new friends and she certainly doesn't need a new guy in her life. Not after the last betrayal.

When Daniel moved to the small town of Hemlock Harbor, he was looking for some peace and quiet. But the local werewolf pack wants him to join their ranks and he would rather chew his arm off than do that. With the reluctant help of the world's grumpiest witch, who sets his heart racing, he finds out what the true meaning of pack is.

When the fight is brought to their doorstep, this ragtag group of supernaturals finds that the only way to protect their new home is to work together.

A Grumpy Witch's Guide to Finding Love isn't just a love story. It's a story about finding the people who love you without judgment, who have your back no matter what. It's a story about family.

Spicy Level: 🌶️🌶️.5/5

This book is an absolute gem. It's wholesome, cozy, and shows us that it is possible to find trust, love, and your own little family in the most unexpected places. I was pulled in from the very first page and found it difficult to put down.

𝙎𝙮𝙣𝙤𝙥𝙨𝙞𝙨:
This is a dual POV following Zoe and Daniel. Zoe's life is in shambles after being banished from her coven by her manipulative ex-boyfriend, Marcus. She is also broke and desperate for a place to stay. One day she stumbles across a ridiculously cheap room in a manor. The catch, though, is her new roommates are a vegan Vampire (Rory) and a ghost (Levi). She works as a Muay Thai trainer at her best friend Lewis's gym. One day he hires Daniel to assist with some Jujitsu classes. But Daniel has a secret; he is a lone wolf facing challenges from the local pack, accompanied by pressure to marry the alpha's daughter. Daniel is instantly attracted to Zoe and finds pleasure in antagonizing her, but when she finds him knocked out by the local pack, the two form a friendship and start to grow closer.

𝙏𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙁𝙚𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨:
Zoe is a typical black cat; she is not someone you would want to mess with. She is sassy, badass, and a total grump. She is also very guarded and battles to trust easily due to being hurt in the past. This means it takes a while for her to trust someone and open up to them about who (and what) she is.

Daniel is a gooey sticky cinnamon roll - which is fantastic because that just so happens to be one of Zoe's favourite snacks. Daniel is the epitome of "just because someone smiles, doesn't mean they are not broken". He might have a super sunny disposition, jokes easily, and smiles almost all the time - but he is suffering from his own internal grief at the loss of his sister.

The chemistry between Zoe and Daniel is electric! They complement each other's personalities so well while also challenging each other and bringing out the best in each other. It was cute how their simple rivalry in the gym turned into a cute little wholesome bond between them as they both learned to open up and share themselves fully. It was the perfect blend of tension and tenderness, with witty banter thrown in, making their relationship feel authentic.

While the story does contain elements of romance, there is a second overarching theme regarding the testament of friendship, where you can find true and genuine connections in the most unexpected places. Zoe's friendship with Lewis is adorable and touching. I really appreciated from the start that it was explicitly clear these two love and care for each other, but only like siblings, with their bickering and jokes - WE DO NOT LIKE LOVE TRIANGLES PEOPLE... As the story progresses, Zoe, Daniel, Rory, Lewis, and Levi form a unique and heartwarming family. It's a beautiful embodiment of the "Found Family" trope where family is not always about blood but about the bonds we choose to form.

From a writing perspective, the style is both cozy and evocative, drawing on moments of heartfelt and realistic emotions and experiences of the characters. However, even with this added depth, the overall story is pretty low-stakes. This is an easy, chilled read that is all about the sweet, gooey, and wholesome. While there are aspects of heightened stakes, mostly it's just something quick to put a smile on your face and a warm, fuzzy feeling in your heart.

𝙏𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙈𝙞𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙨:
▶ Touch Him/Her/Them and You Die
▶ Witches, Vampires, Werewolves and Ghosts
▶ Hidden Identify
▶ Uncontrollable Power
▶ Reverse GrumpyXSunshine (very Black Cat Vibes)
▶ Workplace Romance (Forced Proximity)
▶ Cinnamon Rolls (MMC and IN THE FOOD)
▶ One Bed
▶ Good Girl
▶ He wears GREY SWEATPANTS
▶ FOUND FAMILY (DUH)
▶ View is amazing - looking at her

Overall I loved this! Wholesome, cute, sweet with low stakes! There are MASSIVE HINTS that book 2 is about Lewis and Rory so I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE WHERE THAT GOES!

Thank you to Zayaan Schroeder for my gifted copy!

2☆ DNF 20% I like the concept, not so much the execution.

I feel bad saying that for a debut, but… 😬 The writing could use some smoothing out and editing down. The MCs are pretty one-dimensional in their grumpy-sunshine roles, and I found the h’s aggressive negativity kind of a lot. But it has a cute cover, and I like the context of empowering women through self-defense.🧙🏽‍♀️🐺

Thank you Zayaan for the ARC 💖

What a debut novel!
For a first time author, the writing was amazing and it made it such a pleasure to read.

I loved that each chapter had a heading. These small things make me so happy and makes a book so much more enjoyable.

I loved the found family aspect. The scenes with them altogether were some of my favourites 😂

Zoe is a tough, grumpy but sweet FMC who was betrayed by her coven and boyfriend. She doesn't trust easily (or at all) and just doesn't want to be around people or make friends.

Daniel is the most genuine, adorable, funny, golden retriever MMC. He wants Zoe and he'll work to get her.

I loved how he annoyed Zoe. And instead of been a mature adult she hid from him 😂

I liked how much Zoe loved orcas and all the facts ect...we readers got.
It makes a book that much more interesting.

I look forward to reading more by Zayaan. Can't wait for Rory and Lewis book!

This was such a great story! Zoe wasn't at her best because of a lot of things happening in her past and was indeed very grumpy. Daniel was just such a persistant sweetheart. They were perfect for each other! And I just love a found family thrope!
The witchy wolfy vibes and all the feels made this a sweet and cozy autumn story!

This is the perfect fall read! Witches, werewolves, vampires and more! I loved seeing the reverse grumpy x sunshine. The MMC definitely has cinammon role vibes (pun intended, you will understand later). The FMC and MMC balance each other out so well; they just make sense. I also completely adored Rory. All the characters are great; they definitely made me giggle a time or two. I wanted to be in their world. I felt like there was a very good balance of spice without losing sense of story. I would say probably 🌶🌶🌶. If you're looking for a paranormal romance, let this be your next book! Thank you Zayaan for the opportunity to Arc read this fantastic book!

Zoe and Dan's story was a fun, cozy witchy romance novel with some spice. I've never read a Grumpy x Sunshine romance (or romance at all really). I really enjoyed how the characters grew, the subtle hints about things to come, the way the characters, though strong, are shown to have their downsides and weaknesses too. That mistakes can be made and forgiveness learned. All-in-all a great, easy, witchy read for anyone looking for some badassery and magical butt-kicking :)

What a lovely debut from the author and an amazing start to a new series!
A Grumpy Witch's Guide to Finding Love is like a spell that hooks you right from the beginning and sets you up for a cozy and magical experience with understanding and relatable characters.
I love a well written, fast-paced story that can balance and cater to proper story and character development; a technique the author executed beautifully😌

Zoe Kingston is the best type of character to follow along with. Her life's a mess, she's banished from her coven and is losing her powers, yet she slays through it all with a sharp tongue and a side of sass.
Then there's Daniel Blake, the charming hunk with that swoon-worthy British accent and dimples that could stop traffic. 😏 He’s on a mission to chip away at Zoe’s defenses, but she's not making it easy, which only makes the journey more fun🤭 Once those walls crumble, you’re treated to a relationship that has all the natural flow and is just so uniquely them 🖤

“𝘖𝘩. 𝘐 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘶𝘵𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶,” 𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘪𝘥 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘴𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘣𝘦𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘦....
"𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘐 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶. 𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶’𝘥 𝘭𝘦𝘵 𝘮𝘦.”

I would've loved to see more slowburn between them because the whole "breaking down Zoe's walls" determination was my favorite part.
It did get a little bit too physical for me once they got together. Not all are shown. Some were fade to black. But that's just me being more of a "communication girlie." It didn't stray from the importance of the story.

As much I love Zoe and Daniel, let's not forget the amazing supporting side characters! They truly made the journey so much sweeter, and I adored the idea of them forming a miscellaneous pact🥹
I mean a witch, a werewolve, a vampire, a ghost, and... a human? yeah, that makes for some interesting conversations🤣

What you can expect:
✨ Grumpy x Sunshine
🌙 Black Cat FMC
✨ Golden Retriever MMC
🌙 Rivals to Lovers
✨ Found Family
🌙 Paranormal Romance
✨ Witchy vibes
🌙 Touch him and die
✨ He falls first

Thank you so much to the author for the e-arc in exchange for an honest review! I'll be (im)patiently waiting for the next one :)

ARC Review

This was a charming and easy to read book - not too long so you can easily read in one sitting! It was very fitting for the fall season and I really liked the setting of Hemlock Harbor. It was very whimsical and fun - plus I love the MMC he’s an adorable British werewolf. The romance was really fun and the banter was great. Most of all though the writing was so impressive for a debut novel.

Well, that was something… it’s great to see others have really enjoyed this book but it didn’t work out for me. I think it’s a case of the witch-urban-paranormal sub genre that gives me the ick. They always feature “angry” FMCs that just come across as brats, rich boys with nice cars, insta love, lacklustre secondary characters and “villains” that are as shallow as a puddle. I ended up DNF around 50% after cringing at some sms dialogue and skimmed afterwards.

But again, I’m in the minority so if you’re looking for a witchy read for October and you like your books focused on the romance with some possessive “mine” vibes and a heavy dose of PDA, this might be your jam. Plus it’s on KU 🤷‍♀️

This was a delightful read - definitely read as a contemporary romance first and fantasy second (meaning that this romance didn’t need the fantasy elements but they were a fun addition! All in all this was a well fleshed out story with some awesome main characters and an awesome found family sub plot. Looking forward to Rory & Lewis’ story so much!

I loved this book so much! Zoe is my spirit character and possibly my favorite FMC this year, could be the Pisces in us. I also have a new excuse for why my hair is turning gray. Haha IYKYK!

There were some good steamy scenes, heartwarming found family, and an array of characters you're going to love. I will be eagerly waiting for the 2nd book!

Zoe is an independent woman who happens to be boyfriendless, covenless a d on the verge of losing her magic. 🪄

Daniel is British, gorgeous and a werewolf 🐺

Could things get any weirder in Hemlock Harbor? Yes, yes they can! Zoe ends up teaming up with a ragtag group of supernatural beings in order to protect their new home! 🏡

This book brings together found family, unexpected love and the ability to trust. It’s a cute, fall, cozy read that will bring a smile to your face! I’m excited to see what else Hemlock Harbor has in store for us!

Thank you to the author, Zayaan Schroeder, for an advanced epub of this book for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was such a cozy read for the upcoming Fall season. If you like witches, vampires and werewolf’s, this one is for you. I loved the reverse grumpy X sunshine roles the main characters had. Daniel is such a green flag, while Zoe is grumpy and has a very hard time trusting people(rightfully so). As much as she tries to brush off Daniel, he was so determined to win her heart and he did just that. This book was so well written and I recommend this to anyone who is looking for their next Fall read.🖤

This story gave me all the Halloween cozy vibes it was so charming, plus the cover is so beautiful. Daniel is a complete sweetheart, and Zoe is a sassy, grumpy girl she doesn't trust people, and she's set in her ways, which she has good reason. She tries so hard to put space between her and daniel, but Daniel is determined to win her over. He is supportive of her.I really love the fact that they completed each other so well. The side characters added so much to the story. I laughed and gushed over the found family.

A story of relearning to trust, love, magic, and that family found is a family that create such a strong an amazing bond. This dual POV ( Between the 2 main characters Zoe and Daniel), has such I could say, but I would to discuss about how it wasn’t just a story about magic and how Zoe had to figure how to get that back, but it was one that showed the rawness of how hard it can be to trust again. Zoe had been not only betrayed but also heartbroken by one’s she thought she loved and could trust.
However, in time she not o lay finds love but she finds also a coven, or as one could see it a family.. a family that may not be your typical kind but one that has your back and the story of how the family evolves is definitely worth reading.

"I take you as you are. Your sarcasm, your grumpiness and dismissiveness. I take it all with a fucking pinch of salt! Do you know why? Because I know what you've been through. Because you're my best friend and I fucking love you."

Come on, let's hear it for Lewis Tanaka, people 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 he always pays for the food and comes through with just the right amount of sass and charm to counter Zoe's violent streak. The bestest friend that ever friended! (Can you tell I have a favourite character? It was tough decision, between him and our surprise ghostie)

Just in time for the spooky season, @zayaanwritesbooks is here delivering us all the feels with this fast-paced romance in a supernatural setting filled with peach flavoured air, boy drama and so many weapons the black belt in me is jealous.

Available on October 5th 2024, A Grumpy Witch’s Guide to Finding Love isn't *just* a love story. It's a story about finding the people who love you without judgment, and who have your back no matter what. At its heart, it's a story about family.

And. I. Love. It.

There was something so nostalgic about getting lost in this world. Teen me would have killed for something like this back in high school (though maybe the spice would have been a little too spicy 😅😂) An aggro fmc with a secret heart of gold, and a wolfie mc absolutely obsessed with her? My heart 💜

Edited to add-

Just read the bonus epilogue, and holy hell, did I love the pure chaos it promises for book 2 👀👀

I absolutely LOVED this book!!

Not only is it a cosy witchy/magical read for the upcoming autumn;this book shows us about falling in love, learning to heal and trust, found family and the strength of true friendship. All wrapped up in one fantastic book with a fantastic cast of individually unique and lovable characters, lots of humour and hella spice!!

I loved the drama and the various plots that eventually came together, and I'm loving the fact it's the first in a series because there's no way I can get enough of these characters! I honestly don't even know who my favourite is or which relationship is my favourite because they are all just so fantastic.

Such a fun, easy read that I highly recommend and has left me craving cinnamon buns...

OMG, best read I've ever read this year. This book was absolutely amazing. I loved it. This was an ARC read for me btw so glad I got to read it.

It's kinda like twilight but better🤭🤌🏼, i couldn't stop obsessing over Zoe and Daniel and also Lewis, Rory, and Lexi. The fact that all these characters come together as a family had me smiling from ear to ear.

The plot was amazing
The characters outstanding
The spice was heavy. I'd give a 2🌶(as a dark romance reader. I'd say this wasn't a heavy spiced book)
The background stories of each character were wonderful
The writing, Top notch

😍🫶🏽This actually might be my favourite book of the year (excluding all the series of books I read)

Let me just start off by saying WOW 👌!

I truly enjoyed reading this book. It hit all the right notes, drama, romance, comedy, spice ❤️‍🔥

This book took me on this beautiful adventure of this broken hearted Witch who finds love in this sassy British Alpha Wolf who came to find refuge from his own demons, and together they seem to stumble upon a group of similar souls that are also seeking acceptance.

The character growth in the book is excellent. Zayaan definitely made me excited to see what to come next 😎

I'm so proud of Zayaan on her debut novel, and I am so honored to be able to read it before it hits the shelves,

Mark those book calanders as this book releases just in time for Halloween 🎃

ARC Review:

For a debut novel, this was such a good book. I also loved the fact that the author is local! I don't think I've read a story like this, so it was really intriguing to see how it all came to life. The character development from the main characters, especially Zoe, made me really happy because she deserved some happiness after everything she's been through. For me, I think my favorite part of this book was the found family. Everybody in the "group" plays a role and isn't left out.

That being said, I can't wait for more!!

I am honored to not only receive this ARC but honored to know the very soul that wrote this book. This book was everything and more, no I won't shut up about it! Cozy, sweet, spicy and a dash of chaos. This story was fantastic and the characters! Don't get me started on how much I loved the characters as we will be here all day then.

There is a quote that has stuck with me after reading this beautiful book, "Live for me." It reminded me of a loved one and it both warmed my heart and made me shed a tear, Zayaan you are pure magic and thank you for being so selfless and sharing this book with the world, as I have said before and will say again; you have massive balls and so much courage. Didn’t know I needed a British werewolf book boyfriend, but here we are. 🤷🏼‍♀️😂 How could you say no to a book all about finding the people you can call your family? Zoe has to learn how to navigate the new people coming into her life and learn to trust them and herself again. Her relationship with her best friend Lewis is so sweet, and he is always so supportive of her and her happiness. This book was so sweet and well written, and all the characters make you want to learn more about them. I never would’ve guessed this was a debut novel.

I really loved this book! It was.... magic 😝🤩
Sizzling spice between the lovably grumpy witch, Zoe, and the sunshine in werewolf form that is Daniel.
Zoe is a badass witch with a huge heart. But that heart has been shattered in more ways than one, and she's cast formidable protection wards around the remains while she pieces it back together.
Daniel's sunny disposition and godlike looks blind most to the trauma beneath his surface. But not Zoe. She sees the shadows beyond the light just as he stokes the embers of her fiery personality. Resisting the connection, they're fooling no one but themselves!
Add pack politics, coven secrets, and incredible supporting characters for a found family paranormal romance that was a joy to read! I devoured it.
Cannot wait for book two, particularly after that teaser at the end!

This book has excellent characters. I loved how fleshed out they were. I felt like I know them intimately. All the members of the found family were excellent, and the two lead characters were so well done. I liked the slow burn as they slowly trusted each other. And the passion and spice were excellent. I loved how kick ass the FMC was and how she and the MMC treated each other as equals.

The setting and plot were great too with the small town characters and Pacific Northwest vibes. The conclusion was exciting and I couldn’t put it down. I can’t wait to see all my favorite characters back in book 2. This one is definitely worth picking up!

A Grumpy Witch’s Guide to Finding Love - @zayaanwritesbooks

Firstly, I want to thank Zayaan from the bottom of my heart for giving me an opportunity to be part of her street team but also for being sent an eARC of her debut novel.

Zayaan an has done an amazing job - spinning a cozy, spicy, witchy romance just in time for spooky season!
Zoe is a firecracker, I love her stubborness and “looks like she could kill you, is a cinnamon roll” vibe, just trying to find a place where she belongs after being kicked out of her coven. A fierce, relatable, lovable character that we can all find a little bit of ourselves in.

Daniel is a swoon worthy werewolf of note, and he’s British? What more could you want.

The array of characters doesn’t end there - with a vegan vampire, a hilarious human best friend and a curious ghost, I love this book so much and all the beautiful feel good friendship and found family moments ❤️
