An Unexpected Affair

Rate this book
What if one encounter leads to a series of events that make you question everything you thought you knew about yourself?

Dr. Miranda Hayes lives what many would consider the perfect life. She has a loving boyfriend, family and friends who adore her, and a career she is passionate about. All her life, she has dated men and never once questioned her sexuality. That is until Lane Remington, the woman she considers the most insufferable human she has ever interacted with, becomes her new boss. A woman she met once and hoped never to see again. A woman whom life kept throwing into her path. A woman Miranda can’t seem to avoid no matter how hard she tries and each interaction leaves her with more questions than answers about herself.

Lane Remington is a renowned CEO with a reputation as cold and impenetrable as ice. Her colleagues know her only as the brilliant, enigmatic figure who keeps her personal life locked away. A personal life that includes avoiding committed relationships, finding them incompatible with the demands of her career. A career she loves, with a staunch rule about not dating women she works with. But one encounter with the most enchanting woman she has ever met might force her to defy every single principle that governs her life when she becomes Dr. Miranda Hayes’ boss. A woman she can’t seem to resist, regardless of her best efforts. A woman whose very essence ignites a fire within her veins, stirring passions and unraveling the ironclad self-control she so meticulously maintains.

As they navigate the intricate dance of attraction and lust, Lane and Miranda find themselves irresistibly drawn to each other, thrust into a whirlwind of passion, challenge, and self-discovery. Will they be able to fight the attraction that keeps pulling them together? Or will they give in to temptation and allow the unexpected to happen?

This is a spin-off from the Meant to Be series, which can be read as a stand-alone. However, for a more immersive reading experience, it is highly recommended to read the Meant to Be series first.

Slowwwww burn but the payoff was hottt 🥵🌶️. I loved pretty much everything except the ending. Why stop in the middle of their story instead of just giving us one full book? But I guess I’m hooked now and have to read the next one to see what happens.

One thing I loved was the meet cute! Like meeting in a bar is such a classic. Miranda playing hard to get while Lane stayed persistent made for a really fun dynamic. Their chemistry pulled me in right away, and I stayed invested the whole time. Can’t wait to see how their relationship develops in the next book! 4.5/5

There were things I enjoyed about this one, and things I didn’t, so I’m breaking it down into pros and cons.

Pros:

Miranda – I loved her. She’s a wonderful main character: grounded, complex, and genuinely easy to root for.

Lane’s interactions with Nia and Anita – These moments were some of my favorites. They showed a softer, more human side to Lane that I wish we’d seen more of.

Cons:

Lane herself – Honestly, she was pretty insufferable. She gets offended when Miranda compares her to a man who won’t take no for an answer… but Lane, you literally pursue Miranda relentlessly for months despite her saying no every. single. time. Some of her behavior definitely crossed into uncomfortable, even predatory, territory.

The pacing – I love a good slow burn, but this was too slow. There were long stretches where I just felt bored.

Repetition – So many phrases and internal monologues were rehashed over and over. It really felt like the author was stretching the story to fill two books, and the padding made it drag.

Those who liked the Meant to Be series will be delighted to read this book. The story takes place around the time of the third book. The glimpse of Lane and Miranda we had in that book was nothing compared to this one. It's a slow burn with a capital S: Miranda, being straight and in a relationship, SVT took the time to make her work through her attraction while getting out of her boring but loving straight relationship. Seattle suddenly becomes the size of a sock because Miranda and Lane meet in every corner randomly.Their interactions are full of back and forth, attraction, denial and gave life to the book. The dynamic of "I want to fuck you/Never even in your dreams" built up the pressure but was dragged a bit too much for my taste.I was relieved when (let's say it) they finally banged. When the book ended I was like : what?!!! Are pages missing? Nope it was Skye Von Triessen's staying true to tell stories with her vision and ability to be sadistic toward us poor readers. For those who knows her writing, this book is unexpectedly poor in sex scenes, but rich in sexual tension. I think book two will probably burns your hands as I expect SVT to release the beast and makes it super hot.
This book was really about building the foundation of Miranda and Lane's relationship. Book two will probably be about hotness and feelings, and I look forward to it

I debated writing a review for this book. Because I thoroughly enjoyed it … the female characters were predictable but well developed. The writing was excellent and despite the slooooow burn, there was enough reader foreplay to keep it enjoyable and wanting more!! Here’s my very subjective issue - when the slow burn goes on for hundreds of pages and then the whole leaves everything unresolved and on a huge cliffhanger …. waiting for the next book that doesn’t exist yet!!!! Aaaargh!!!

I loved the gradual build-up, and the palpable tension between Lane And Miranda. Though I have to say that certain conversations that transpired between Lane and Miranda, were coming off a bit too strong, too intense and crossing a line that could easily be interpreted as sexual harassment. I wasn't too thrilled reading it. That said, to finally be able to read their eventual surrender, now that gives me all the fireworks.

I love it

I love it. I love it. The teasing, the witty banter, the tension, the attitudes, and that first kiss.. hallelujah 🙌 I usually don't enjoy slow burn because of the repetitive motions but when it is this sweet, I make exceptions.

Of course, Miranda Darling and her heterosexual tendency thoughts and her boy and his mommy's demands had me seeing red.

Anyways, I love it. I loved it. I enjoyed it. Just wow. That scene when Lane decided to send Miranda home instead... HATS EFFING OFF. That was absolutely everything that my non-romantic heart needed to beat slower. Can't wait to start book 2.

So not for me. I gave it three chapters. Overwritten, pretentious, and Lane not accepting a no when she propositioned the other MC. Frat dude date grapey vibes. Hell no.

I have to say, it’s rather difficult to enjoy a book when you really dislike the MCs.
Ok, I don’t hate Miranda. I enjoyed her as a side character in the Meant to Be series, but, I’ve wanted to shake her a few times in this one.
Her love interest, Lane, however, is not likeable at all, imo. To say she’s arrogant is an understatement and she really comes off as a predator at times. She’s beyond obnoxious in how she sees herself as god’s gift to women.
I know Lane has a softer side that she hides from everyone, and a troubled childhood that will undoubtedly explain why she is the way she is, so I will continue on to the second book. I’ve enjoyed everything else from the author, (especially the Survivors series), so I’m hoping to be enlightened and have a change of heart about Lane.

Five bright big stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Skye Von T. You rock!!!! You created a beautiful story and
I love “An Unexpected Affair “
This story is so beautiful and also different from others, I laughed myself to tears, the banter, the sparks ⚡️ simply delicious 🥰
Miranda and Lane are beautiful intelligent strong women
One has a nice boyfriend who wants to take the relationship to the next level, the other has affairs with women but they don’t last long since she just doesn’t have time for relationships.
Both women are very career driven and are very successful.
So they meet and the story begins….
I devour this book in a blink of an eye, and it’s so good, I want to read it again so enjoy 😉.
Thank you Skye V.T.
Can’t wait…..

I’m on a mid streak lately, and this book and it’s followup sit comfortably in that category. This a slow burn of sorts but with tension that feels fake. We have an over pushy protagonist on one hand and a straight currently in a relationship with man protag on the other hand. Did I mention the straight woman works for the aggressive pushy lesbian? Their interactions are comical because in talking head style they both bemoan this type of behavior from men but it’s some how ok and hot when it’s a woman? 🙄 The spice at the end is hot but book overall, meh.

You know, I was 80% through with this book and was so worried it would be rushed between Lane and Miranda if something were to happen between them. But, come to find out, there’s a continuation. Insert girl screams here. The slow burn that was happening between the two has me swooning. I’m just so worried Miranda is going to fall for Lane and Lane is going to not want anything to do with a relationship with her.

There are so many unanswered questions with Lane and Miranda so I can’t wait to read the second book!!!!

Cruel cruel woman

This is another great read from this author, full of interesting characters, including some from a previous book. The banter between the 2 protagonists is funny and brilliant, kept me happily page turning, scrolling really. Like Lane I was enjoying reaching a climax but did wonder where this was going as it reached 90% of the book with so many matters to be revealed. Although frustrated now to be kept waiting, I was glad it didn't finish with a hurried Epilogue like so many others do. So cruel writer, please don't leave us hanging too long.

This is the first book in the series I am reading. It was entertaining. I liked Lane with her loved ones/friends. I didn’t like how she acted around Miranda when trying to seduce/flirt with her. I found myself cringing and rolling my eyes a few times. Still, I am looking forward to the next book to see how it all unfolds.

A Hot & Blazing Clash Of Two Very Independent Woman!

A much needed Thank You to Skye for granting my wish of a Miranda, Trevor and Lane storyline. It was all I could vision as I finished “Meant To Be”. The story begins when Lane, back in Seattle after a long absence, goes for a drink at Josephine’s Pub and to scout for a women she can take back to the hotel with her before starting her new job. Ordering her drink from a very interested server, Lane doesn’t engage when she brings her drink. As she is looking around at all the patrons, her eyes land on a very beautiful woman at the bar having a very friendly conversation with the bartender. Dr. Miranda Hayes stops in at Josephine’s Pub for a much needed drink, after another Trevor guilted conversation. Josephine once again makes it known that Miranda needs to go on a date with her even though Miranda plays on a different team and is dating Trevor. As Josephine gets to serving on the other side of the bar, Miranda takes a breath, sips her drink and takes a glance around where her eyes land on a women staring at her and she looks away. What happens next at the bar sets the tone for Miranda’s next surprise. Skye takes us into the lives and memories of Miranda and Lane. They are constantly in each others space as they keep getting pulled together. And the not so nice banter between them has each of them wondering the whys. It is an extremely important loving story that has these two women trying to understand things going on within themselves. Of course we have Blake and Alexandra back again with a couple of others floating through. It was so good but I need my HEA. Thankfully we have another book coming!

An Unexpected Affair
New Release

This narrative revolves around Lane and Miranda, encapsulating a classic "enemies to lovers" dynamic. Both characters appear to be on a quest for something deeper, possibly a passion they never realized they sought.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story, especially the excitement of witnessing Miranda's journey unfold. Every moment spent exploring the interactions between Lane and Miranda heightened the tension, particularly as Miranda grappled with her feelings of being lost, especially in relation to Trevor.

The bond between Anita and Lane is particularly heartwarming, characterized by a genuine affection. There’s something profoundly impactful about a strong woman who offers support during challenging times. A mother figure can often emerge in forms beyond biological ties, serving as a guardian angel sent from above.

Anita truly shone as a gem within this narrative; her unwavering love and support were both admirable and beautifully portrayed. She consistently provided a safe haven for Lane, acting as a vital grounding force. I also appreciated the playful banter between Lane and Miranda, culminating in their eventual surrender to their mutual desires.

A lingering conflagration

To call An Unexpected Affair a slow burn story underestimates author Skye Von Triessen’s ability to create scorching heat from the first chapter.

Triessen remarkably paces the build-up of the primary characters’ romance chapter by chapter by chapter — without my interest waning at all.

The book sets straight Dr. Miranda Hayes, a cardiothoracic surgeon, on a long, convoluted path that begins with angst in her yearlong relationship with her boyfriend Trevor.

After a frustrating day, Miranda makes a stop at Josephine’s, the classiest lesbian bar in Seattle, to wind down solo with a Negroni.

When Josephine brings an unsolicited second Negroni to Miranda, the surgeon has her first opportunity to rebuff its sender’s audacious attempt to seduce her.

To Miranda’s chagrin, the next day she learns the temptress is her new boss, Parkwood Hospital CEO Lane Remington.

Triessen gives readers one sizzling scene after another, interspersed with Miranda’s and Lane’s interactions with the key people in their lives. She continuously intensifies your engagement with the story, leaving you eager to read An Unexpected Fate — what happens after the couple’s initial romantic rendezvous.

This ultimate slow burn and chase. The language used to describe even the simplest of interactions is impeccable-such vivid imagery! And don’t think I didn’t revel in the likeness of these successful Black characters to celebs Eva Marcille Pigford, Terrence Howard (in the eyes at least), and Morris Chestnut 👏🏾 My minds eye thanks you SVT-MUCH appreciated!

I read this before the meant to be series which I need to indulge now, but the book can be read stand alone but I know I will enjoy reading more about the characters in the series. They are so well thought out with each having full lives, back stories and depth.

I spent so much time smiling at one point my cheeks hurt a little and I had to pop in a chewing gum to redirect my facial muscles lol. The universe refuses to let these two women go about their lives without crossing paths and I just keep picturing myself in the same position and really seeing myself looking to the heavens and asking GOD WHYYYY?! just as both MC’s had at some point in the book.

Highly recommended the read, can’t imagine anyone would be disappointed as long as you’re really a fan of the chase and the hot/cold, push/pull thing.

Steamy, emotional, and utterly addictive

An Unexpected Affair by Skye Von Trissen is a sizzling romance that balances passion with heart in perfect measure. Von Trissen excels at creating characters who feel real, relatable, and full of emotional depth. The story is filled with tension, chemistry, and unexpected twists that keep you completely hooked from start to finish. It’s not just about the sparks — it’s about the emotional journey that makes the affair unforgettable.

Abby Craden and Audrey Obeyn bring this story to life with phenomenal dual narration. Abby delivers warmth and nuance, capturing the emotional highs and lows of the lead, while Audrey adds depth, intensity, and a subtle sensuality that heightens every moment of tension. Their performances complement each other beautifully, making every scene feel vivid and alive.

An Unexpected Affair is an irresistible blend of romance, drama, and emotion. Fans of steamy, character-driven love stories with brilliant narration will be completely captivated.

Wow just Wow

That was the most entertaining book I have read in a WHILE! I love a slow burn and now you’ve made it SAPPHIC! If you love a slow burn with AMAZING banter this is the book for you. I found myself connecting with both Miranda and Delaney. With Lane I connected with her lack of showing emotions in fear of getting hurt or people letting her down it’s something I’ve done my whole life. I would say from an early age I’ve known I like women (and men) but getting to experience Miranda coming to terms with her sexuality was something so refreshing and comforting. Although I’ve still never been in a relationship I can see where she’s coming from. I also really appreciate this book aging the characters up in their late 30’s early 40’s. I don’t read a lot of books where the MC’s are older, especially LGBTQ+ books which was refreshing. I am about to immediately go into the second book right now!

I just started the first book by Skye von Triessen last week and what can I say? Wow ... one of my new favorites. After the Meant to Be series, which offered glimpses of Lane and Miranda in the last book of the trilogy, I'm completely hooked on Unexpected Affairs.

I have to admit that I'm not usually a huge fan of slow burn, but Skye von Triessen has managed to make me really enjoy this trope. SVT takes the reader on a veeeeery slow journey where I often wasn't sure how much I sympathized with the MCs. But I wanted to find out what made the characters tick and if and how they would come together in the end. This constant curiosity is fueled by SVT's writing style and the way she builds her stories and you can hardly put the book down. I can't wait for the sequel to come out to find out what happens next with Lane and Miranda.

⭐️⭐️⭐️3/4

An Unexpected Affair is a slow-burn romance brimming with witty banter and enough sexual tension to fill a Hollywood Hills mansion. Miranda and Lane are captivating protagonists, both driven by a desire to make the world a better place. Despite their contentious start, their gradual dance around each other provides them the space to not only understand one another but also discover more about themselves. As the book concludes, more questions remain than answers, and all I know is this: I. Want. More. from Lane and Miranda. I can't wait to see where their journey leads in An Unexpected Fate. So grab your copy, find your favorite reading spot, and dive into this irresistibly sexy tale.

As a man, its characters like these which made me become a fan of sapphic stories and further why ice queens r my favorite.

As I often question the need for relationships as an Asexual man, I find myself saying to my self what Lane has become to frame her as such because of lack of information proves why she is likeable in the end. She isn't a typical tyrant, but her story is what makes movies great.

but sometimes a woman like Miranda show up and stir the very foundation like a powerful wind designed to reenforce what really matters.

excellent book and look forward to more from Skye.

Another Amazing Read

I’m once again blown away by Skye’s writing. An Unexpected Affair draws you in immediately, with how captivating and enchanting Lane and Miranda are. I’m not usually one for slow burns because I’m an impatient hopeless romantic. However, the growth of their attraction and chemistry unfolds naturally and at a decent pace to satisfy. The banter, the quips, and overall dialogue is top tier. I can’t wait to see what happens next for these two characters. I highly recommend especially if you love fierce and independent female characters.
