The Catalyst was such a great, fast-paced read! It hooked me from the beginning and I found myself wanting to return to the pages again and again. The characters drew me in and I felt like I had come to know them by the end of the book. The pop culture references were also so fun. Such a well-written debut novel! Absolutely adored this book. “THE THREE-WEEK-OLD ELECTRIC blue nail polish distracted her for the moment. She fiddled with the misshapen remnants, her thumb nail tracing over a piece that resembled a crescent moon, scraping at the edge until it was set free. It fluttered down toward her feet as the lights above pulsated in the reflection of the laminate tiles. The flickering fluorescent bulbs threatened to burn out with a high-pitched whine, mocking the relentless throbbing in her head.

‘Looks like my favorite patient is finally awake,’ Dr. Roski said, leaning against the door to her hospital room.

'It happened again, didn’t it?' she asked, sure of another blackout.

‘Yes, this is the fifth time. You don’t recall anything?’ Dr. Roski asked, a fatherly look of concern across his face, which was fitting as Kelynn viewed him as much after her many visits.”

Readers meet Kelynn Sanders at the beginning of this young adult contemporary romance that blends the ordinary struggles of college life with extraordinary circumstances. She has been struggling with these mysterious blackouts that she doesn’t understand that leave her disoriented and searching for answers that seem perpetually out of reach. The vivid opening scene immediately establishes the atmosphere that permeates much of Kelynn's world, where hospital rooms have become as familiar as dormitories.

Can Dr. Roski help her?

“‘It sounds like you had an anxiety attack, but I rarely see someone fall unconscious for this long.’

‘How long was I out?’

‘About four hours. Have you been sleeping well?’

‘The best I can as a college student,’ she said, rubbing her forehead.

Dr. Roski prescribed her a higher dose of medication to help prevent anxiety. She’d taken it regularly as requested, but it never seemed to work. Kelynn had been experiencing blackouts since her senior year of high school, triggered by a multitude of thoughts about her uncertain future.”

This captures Kelynn’s frustration of dealing with a condition that defies easy explanation, while additionally highlighting the reality that medication doesn't always provide the solutions.

The story takes an intriguing turn during what should have been an ordinary evening.

Out on an arranged date with Hastings at The Lantern that clearly isn't proceeding as planned, Kelynn notices a mysterious man looking at her, something that will change everything.

“After taking another sip of bubbly, she looked up from her glass, past Hastings, and noticed a rather tall man walking by. He was staring at her, hidden mostly by the shadows in between street lights. She couldn’t fully make out his face, but she could see his eyes fixed on her, suddenly feeling like he was peering into her soul and rummaging through all of her thoughts.
Everything melted away.”

Only later does she learn that it was Clayton Fogerty.

Each chapter uses alternating point of view from Kelynn and Clay which keeps readers involved understanding the complex dynamic between them.

Readers gain insight into both the mystery and the motivations driving the story forward. This prevents the narrative from becoming one-sided, allowing for a more intricate exploration of their developing relationship.

By seeing the perspective from both of them, readers get a deeper understanding of the magic and mystery that happens along the way.

Immediately from Clay, readers learn it was him, something still unknown to Kelynn.

“IT WAS A bet. I was supposed to show up and wreck the date. Did I do that? No, I couldn’t—because of her.”

The setting of Chapel Hill and North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains for this story helps keep readers grounded in real places while exploring the challenges young adults face when trying to balance independence with the desire for meaningful relationships.

Despite strong character development, the magical realism sometimes conflicts. The question of Kelynn's independence becomes a bit muddled by Clayton's secret manipulations, yet it does give a believable portrayal of anxiety and college life.

Graduating from college, the main character, Kelynn Sanders, is overcome by an intense anxiety that takes away the light to her understanding of the world, and her life is full of strange blackouts. Her life takes a drastic turn when she meets a man named Clayton Fogerty who is able to perform a mind-game with her through the opal necklace.
Located right in the energetic Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, the novel is certainly a very impressive and moving storytelling of life in a small town and a personal battle with mental health. The journey of Kelynn is both painful and beautiful as she deals with her problems with the help of her buddies and the enigmatic Clayton.

Furthermore, Bickel is known for his ability to draw readers in with the help of his writing that is descriptive and well-built characters who are remarkably attainable. The narrative is well-balanced, with the author managing to include both moments of heightened tension and insightful introspective sections that tell of Kelynn?s degree of inner turmoil. The transformations that come about in the lives of the protagonists, especially Kelynn?s agony with time, are brilliantly portrayed in the peculiar story marked with questions rather than direct comments.

On the other hand, the novel also goes deep into the debate over the moral rights of Clayton to be a leader, one of the significant problems being consent and power. This wears a heart on the sleeve of the story, changing it from just a self-exploration to a growth narrative.
One of the greatest things "The Catalyst" provides both modern fiction readers and the ones who are interested in character-driven stories is the fact that it is engaging both emotionally and intellectually. Bickel is a very talented author who not only can talk about love but also can give you the feeling of reading a mystery and the emotional depth of the story make it a really good book.
"The Catalyst" is engaging in a manner where it is both disturbing and healing and reaches out to fans of contemporary fiction and character studies. "The Catalyst" by Nat Bickel centers on the life of Kelynn Sanders, a young woman trying to find a firm footing. Life for Keilynn had not always been a bed of roses from dealing with severe anxiety that led to blackouts to meeting the wrong set of men. However, she finds something true when she encounters Clayton Forgety. They get to know each other and discover certain aspects of themselves that they never knew existed. One of life's most precious moments is finding the perfect person who embraces love and shares it unconditionally with you. This amazing fictional love story tells the tale of a young man and woman, and a Romani blessed necklace that brings them together.

I love this book because the writer tells the story in a casual but heartfelt manner. Somehow, Nat creates the perfect blend of what we all experience as young adults. We all have an innate desire to have the perfect love experience with someone. Clay became the person with whom Keilynn Sanders felt comfortable enough to be herself. I love the way their love gradually progressed and blossomed. The entire book keeps the reader completely captured and drawn in. There were no grammatical or spelling errors, and the story was not superficial.

The only thing I did not like about this book was that the ending seemed rushed. The author built a perfect story from the beginning to the climax, but after that, it moved faster. It felt like the book whisked me from a quiet and carefully constructed story to a rushed ending. However, it was a beautiful read. I recommend this book to all book lovers, especially those who like a good love story.

It's a tough life, but we always have that one who helps us out. The Catalyst by Nat Bickel describes somebody in a romantic relationship.

Kelynn has this opal necklace which is a birthday gift from her father, that when it's already too much to take, she's just going to put into it and then there you go, a piece of cake to work on.

There comes Clay, who seems to be somebody who is not going to put mud on her face, but instead, literally like a clay, a figure to stick into, that can keep it together.

Eventually, they are a couple. But later on, Kelynn is asking something from Clay that belongs to her. Clay is reluctant, and now it's like taking a toll on their relationship. Kelynn is taking a flight to New York and Clay doesn't know it. Will they be able to realize the misconception on the catalyst?

The teens will sure to have another inspiration and giggling thru The Catalyst. It speaks of youthful love, discipline and aspirations. Kelynn and Clay's relationship is refreshing and a good example that two heads are really much better than one. It's not just the thrilling sensation that is being shown in their relationship but the minds that are set and look forward for the future together fulfilling their dreams.

Hence, I give a four-star rate for the inspiring themes and captivating plot of the story. Profanity is tolerable and there is nothing to dislike in this book. I recommend therefore to young adults in particular who will surely relate, enjoy, chuckle, and learn some life's lessons.

She goes from high school to college with sudden anxiety attacks that make her blackout from time to time. As a young woman trying to find roots in life, she finally meets Clayton Forgety. From a stranger in a restaurant, feelings build up between them, and sparks fly. Everything begins with an opal necklace blessed by a Romani traveler many years ago, leading her to find love and a new life. The author creates a beautiful fictional story that blends themes of love, romance, mystery, and fantasy. It tells the perfect tale of two people united by memories locked in an opal necklace.

I enjoyed this book. It was a beautiful read. I loved the relationship between Keilynn and Monette. I also liked how well-developed each character was. The author did not use many characters, which would have made it less easy to understand and flow with. There were no grammatical or spelling errors. The book progressed smoothly and gradually from the beginning to the end. I liked how the author blends fiction, mystery, and love.

One thing I did not like about this book, though, was that Keilynn seemed to depend too much on her opal necklace. At some point, It felt like without the opal necklace, there would not have been any love story. This made it seem a bit superficial. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romance, love, mystery, and fantasy.

The catalyst is a book that centres around the main character, Kelynn, as she battles with anxiety. Kelymm is a fresh college graduate who frequently has blackouts when she lets her thoughts overwhelm her, which has been since her senior year of high school. This is mostly triggered by thoughts about her uncertain future. For this reason, she always keeps herself busy with one work or the other.

She possesses an opal necklace given to her by her father that is said to absorb the thoughts into it rather than let it take over her, but it loses that effect when she stops believing in it. Meanwhile, in between these events, she meets Clayton, a friend of Hashting who she went on a date with, and at their first brief encounter, she feels something so strong.

She soon realises that the presence of Clay reduces the effects of the blackouts, and meanwhile, he finds her opal necklace on the floor outside his house after a party the night before that she attended with her friends.
 
I could go on and on and on about the book because I really enjoy reading it. I like Kelynn's character so much as she appears to be a strong woman, but her friends, on the other hand, especially Preston, appeared to have little care about her feelings and opinion.

Because I enjoyed the book every step of the way, I have no criticism about it. I would most definitely recommend the book to readers of romance and those interested in the mental health part of it.

I am a huge fan of romance novels, so I really enjoyed reading this book. I would definitely recommend it, especially for fellow romance fans. The story drew me in right from the beginning when a mysterious stranger leaves the restaurant after a failed first date. I was eager to find out more, especially about Clayton Forgety, a laid-back guy working for a tech company, and his growing connection with Kelynn. I was particularly intrigued by the significance of the necklace around Kelynn’s neck.

The familiar setting, relatable characters, and engaging plot made the story really enjoyable. Kelynn has friends with whom she confides, especially Preston, who actually sets up the blind date between Kelynn and Hastings. Clayton, on the other hand, is a determined gentleman who never gives up on love, even when Kelynn decides to disappear.

Lastly, I love the quality of writing in this book as well.

I also admire the plot's progression, from a disastrous date to a fresh start, successes with the creation of new apps, memorable moments, and so much more. The opal necklace adds a touch of fantasy to the narrative, making the book a compelling read for those who enjoy both romance and fantasy.

The core of this book is the essence of what it means to fall in love in today's world, with characters who are so relatable that they feel like old friends, and the fond effect attached whether something goes wrong or not, making change a primary factor tilting on any ground. I love that Nat, the author, does great work in this beautiful piece by balancing emotional details with intellectual human elements, which gives a rational character development. The themes highlighted in the book include human curiosity and its limits; emotional complexity; personal responsibility; unpredictability; ambition; and consequence. However, the character development of secondary characters could be given more depth in their interactions and balance.

I loved this book from start to finish, as soon as I started it I was knee deep!! The characters are so relatable, the location and cozy restaurants + bar scenes perfect, and the pace of every friendship and relationship in the book moved at exactly the right, digestible place.

I really enjoyed spending time with each character and felt just excited to watch their pages unfold. It was a really “natural” book and really refreshing because of it.

The Catalyst: This is a beguiling tale of love, self-discovery, and transformation set amidst the beguiling tapestry of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This is Kelynn's story: an emotionally confused girl with mysterious blackouts and Clay, the technical writer whose presence became instrumental in her life. Against all adversity, misunderstandings, and enchantment brought on by a mystical opal necklace that reveals hidden truths, they build a bond. 

The story is a personal growth arc, one of connecting with another and, even further, the guts to let go of one's fears. Using the fine threads of visual storytelling and well-structured, relatable characters, Bickel weaves a poetically deep-worded narrative that definitely dances with the transformative nature of love and calls to embracing one's true self. This is a candid investigation of the interweavings between fate and free will, yet it is able to show how love can affect deep aspects of human nature.

I gave Nat Bickel's book 5 stars out of 5 since this is, without a shadow of a doubt, a beautiful combination of love, self-exploration, and personal maturity against the stunning frame of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Kelynn Sanders and Clay Fogerty are two astonishing characters who breathed life into the story. The struggles of Kelynn through blackouts and emotional turmoil, finding strength and clarity in her bond with Clay, are inspiring and relatable.
