When an old friend reaches out to Sinclair Crowe, he and his wife, Jayne Frost, head to New Orleans for what they think will be simple visit before they finally make the journey back to the North Pole. They’re looking forward to some fun and great food.
But things in the Big Easy are about to get downright difficult when a sudden death and a shocking incident threaten Sinclair’s friend’s reputation. It’s pretty obvious things are not as they seem, but digging deeper means putting themselves in danger.
Can Jayne and Sinclair find justice for all those involved without getting nixed in New Orleans?

Nixed in New Orleans by Kristen Painter A Frost & Crowe mystery series #4. Paranormal cozy mystery. Spinoff from the Jayne Frost series, which is a spinoff from the Nocturne Falls series. Can be read separately from the prior series but best in order for this particular series. Alternating POV. Jayne Frost and Sinclair Crowe travel in their well decked-out mobile home to New Orleans to visit with Matt Galloway, a friend of Sinclair’s. While there, one of Matt’s employees is found dead. Having met the employee, Jayne and Sinclair know something isn’t right and they decide to help in the investigation.
🎧 I alternated between an ebook and audiobook for this story. The performance is narrated by Hollis McCarthy and BJ Harrison who do the full series. Both are marvelous with multiple voices and clearly expressed emotions. It’s always fun to hear the cats talking too. Chicken Party is Spider’s favorite. 🤣 I listened to this a little faster than my preferred of 1.5. I love BJ’s intonation but he is slow! I know it’s deliberate for clarity purposes but since I’m from the Midwest, I need to listen at a conversational level.
So much food! Jayne is always hungry. First, because she’s a winter elf and practically lives on sugar, and second, she’s seven months pregnant. The baby apparently has the same need for food and sugar. Do Not read this book before a meal or you’ll be searching your house for king cake, pralines, fries, cheese or pancakes with whipped cream and mini chocolate chips. The mystery is easy to follow as Jayne and Sinclair follow the clues with the occasional help by Birdie. A little tense and worry for the baby as the villian takes advantage of Jayne but, of course, our heroes win the day. An amusing and magical mystery. I’m heading to the kitchen now.
It's a decent read (or listen, in my case) if you're already invested in the series. I really enjoyed the first series—Jayne Frost—and I keep hoping to feel those same magical sparks in this one. Maybe if there was more Jane time and less Sinclair as there are dual narrators? Maybe I'd enjoy this series more if they were back in Nocturne Falls or the North Pole? I miss those characters and settings. It seems they'll eventually return to the North Pole, so I'm holding out hope. At least Birdie is still making appearances.
I’m hoping the next book brings back more of that spark that made the Jayne Frost series so much fun to listen to. I’ve listened to it twice.
Also, I’m frustrated that I can't select the audiobook format since I listened to the audiobook, not the ebook. It's like it’s 2013 again... except, honestly, it's even worse.
Fourth in the Frost & Crowe paranormal cozy mystery series revolving around an amateur sleuth who happens to be Jack Frost’s daughter. The focus is on a blackmailer targeting Sin’s friend.
My Take Jayne and Sin are still touring the US in their fancy RV and this time they’re headed to New Orleans.
I do envy Jayne’s ability to eat all that sugar and never gain any weight.
Sigh, I wish . . .
”An ice cream truck might overturn and need us to help eat all the ice cream before it melts.”
Ooh, Jayne learns how much of a nerd Sin was in school, lol.
Painter uses first person dual protagonist point-of-view from Jayne’s and Sin’s perspectives. From this we learn how each of them is looking forward to and worrying about bringing up a child.
While it is sweet to hear Jayne and Sin being all gooey-gooey about each other, Painter stretches it too far.
It’s quite the contrast with the so-helpful Tony who’s willing to do anything for Charlie.
There’s a lot of eating, worry and joy about the coming baby, enjoying the food in New Orleans as well as Spider’s and Sugar’s comments, and the ooey-gooey with short bursts of action.
If you need a feel-good book, Nixed in New Orleans isn’t a bad bet.
The Story It’s a great visit for Sin to see his good friend Matt and to introduce his wife to him. Until they discover that someone is blackmailing Matt about an innocent photo.
And Spider helped.
The Characters The seven-months pregnant Jayne Frost, a winter elf who is the daughter and heir of Jack Frost, is married to Sinclair Crowe, a necromancer who does great donuts. Jack Jr is the coming baby. Spider is a black cat who has been with Jayne since Miss Frost Solves a Cold Case, 1, in Jayne Frost; Sugar is Sin’s white cat who was given the ability to talk. It’s so sweet reading their contributions to the conversations. They’re very forthright, lol.Mr and Mrs Claus will be the baby’s great-uncle and great-aunt. Sin’s parents live in Las Vegas along with Aunt Zinnia (Lost in Las Vegas, 1).
Matt Galloway has his own security company and lives in New Orleans. Slim is his beloved (and asthmatic) street cat. Julie is Matt’s older sister who’s married to Dan and lives in Houston with two daughters. Matt also has a younger brother. Dexter, a white-hat hacker, works for Matt. Charlotte “Charlie” Frett of Frett’s Pets is Matt’s cat sitter.
Isla Larson, she’s a sales rep for ChemSafe, is Matt’s ex-girlfriend — he traveled too much for her. Another negative? She’s allergic to cats. Although, Wentworth is her dog. Veronica is Matt’s decorator. Madeline Deville is a friend who deals in antique books and rare documents.
Some of the places where Matt likes to eat include The Ruby Slipper, Lola’s, Auntie Mae’s Diner where Anita is a waitress (she has a dog named Bean), Slim Goodies Diner, Luzie’s, and Tuttle’s Gastro Pub.
Darryl Tyson is the police commissioner and engaged to Leonie, a witch, who is Effie’s mother (The Vampire's Former Flame, 16). Sergeant Chambeau and Officers Ricks and Greely are with the NOLA PD. Kim works in the IT lab. Tara is a paramedic.
Eileen Toussaint has quite the record. Anthony “Tony” Cipriani is Charlie’s on-again off-again boyfriend.
Nocturne Falls is . . . . . . where Jayne and Sin met. Birdie Caruthers, a werewolf, is the receptionist for the sheriff’s department. She knows more about computers than many. Birdie is dating Jack Van Zant (The Detective Wins the Witch, 10). Remy Lafitte, a vampire, is from New Orleans originally, and is now a police officer. Ephie/Effie is Remy’s girlfriend (and also from New Orleans AND Darryl’s goddaughter (The Vampire's Former Flame). The Tombstone is the local newspaper. Zombie Donuts had been Sin’s shop here until he sold it to Archie Tingle, a retired (from the North Pole!) elf baker. Delaney Elllingham makes those incredible Delaney’s Delectables in The Vampire's Mail Order Bride, 1.
The Santa Slide is how Santa (and relatives) can get into any space.
The Cover and Title The cover is cheerful in its New Orleans street view at night with its brightly colored lights and a few people walking in the background. In the foreground is the black-and-blue-haired Jayne with her pointed ear showing, wearing black leggings, black flats, and a black-and-white horizontally striped sweater. She’s carrying a purse on her right arm which is bent to touch Sin’s chest. He’s pretty hunky-looking in black jacket and pants with a dark green T-shirt, his right arm cuddling Jayne and his left in his pocket. On either side of them are their cats, Spider is on the left and Sugar is on the right, looking up at them. All the text is in white, starting with the series info at the very top with the title below it. Under Jayne’s and Sin’s feet is an info blurb with the author’s name below that.
I suspect the title refers to Matt, as he’s Nixed in New Orleans.
Nixed in New Orleans is book 4 in the Frost & Crowe Mystery series. This is a fantasy, cozy mystery. I loved this book. I love the series and the series it spun off of and the one that spun off of. I cannot get enough of these books. I can't wait until the next book comes out so I can see what Jayne and Sinclair do next. The narration was terrific as always.
Jayne and Sinclair get investigate a murder while eating very yummy sounding food in New Orleans. Another fun installment in the series. I can't wait for the next one!
It was okay, not great, not really good but just okay but not nearly as good as the others but I think it's because I just thought the whole Charlie thing was stupid. First, they met her for a few minutes & knew next to nothing about her BUT instantly knew she wouldn't be the type to commit suicide. Umm, people who don't seem like the type to commit suicide do in fact commit suicide every single day. They didn't even know her beyond a cursory glance but they knew?! Robin Williams killed himself & shocked people because they didn't know what was going on in his mind & that was people who knew him too not just strangers she literally spent like 5 minutes with. That just bothered me & just made me instantly like this book less. Then of course Jayne gets in trouble - again - in a similar way as before. It's a good thing she has that winter elf metabolism. It just seemed a little redundant & a little bit of stretch with the plot. I love this series & I love the Nocturne Falls series but this was like she ran out of good ideas but needed a book so she cobbled together a little of this & a little of something else to try to make a book. It was okay but lacking what I have come to expect from this writer. Plus, I'm pretty sure this book could have been about half it's length if it focused less on Jayne eating. I know her eating a big thing cause she needs the sugar & all that as a winter elf but I feel like it got a bit excessive with this book. Maybe even a little with the last one but this book felt like it should have been a book about places to eat. I hope its not going the way of the once kind of good but now are terrible Hannah Swenson series that spends most of the books talking about the food they are making & eating. At least the dialogue in these books is still pretty good which can't be said for the Hannah Swenson series. I didn't dislike the book so I didn't go below 3 stars but I didn't really like it either. It was missing something. It was just okay. Not 2 star worthy but not 3 star either but there is no half stars.
When a friend reaches out to Sinclair, he and his wife Jayne head to New Orleans for a visit before finishing their journey to the North Pole. Their visit should be simple, but instead they find themselves investigating a murder and someone trying to blackmail Sinclair’s friend.
This was an enjoyable murder mystery. Sin and Jayne end up in New Orleans for a simple visit but quickly find themselves stuck deciphering another mystery. The murder was interesting in this because the cops initially thought it was a suicide, but that was questioned by all and eventually determined to be true. While I did enjoy the mystery of this one, I will admit, I figured out who the villain was pretty early in the story. I still enjoyed it and all though.
My complaint with this book, and the previous one, was that the fact that Jayne was pregnant and constantly hungry seemed to overshadow a lot of what was happening. There is so much of this book that is spent with them just eating meals or discussing the next meal they will have with her cravings. I know this is a fact of pregnancy, but it got old for me quickly. Though all the food talk did make me hungry for sweets.
Overall, this was enjoyable and I still am enjoying Sin and Jayne’s adventures. I will be interested in seeing how their next story progresses since she is very close to having the baby at this point.
TW: suicide discussed; murder and attempted murder of a pregnant woman; kidnapping;
Jayne and Sin are heading to New Orleans and...things take a turn while they're there. Which isn't unexpected, exactly, given what these two have dealt with in the past, but this was supposed to be a relaxing trip where Sin got to visit with an old friend and Jayne got to sample some delicious New Orleans food before the two of them headed back to the North Pole to wait on the arrival of their wee one.
Then a friend of Sin's friend (and someone the couple have recently met) commits suicide and both Jayne and Sin have reservations about it actually being suicide. So they quietly start looking into it. Because that's what they do.
Complicating things are some local break-ins and a little case of blackmail. On the plus side, Birdie manages to pull some strings (because that lady is CONNECTED!) and soon Jayne and Sin are meeting with the local police chief to help put the pieces of this case together.
A little danger, some shifty individuals, more than one excellent meal, and two supernatural individuals who can't let injustice lie.
Kristen Painter, it would seem, can write no wrong!
Seriously? I mean, we all KNOW it’s going to happen…. Jayne is a born trouble-magnet. But WHO, I ask you, WHO would put a pregnant woman and her unborn child in jeopardy? Ms Painter? I’m looking at you.
Ok, all levity aside, this is a phenomenal read. And as a male who typically avoids all that emotional nonsense, let me tell you I am STILL hooked on Kristen Painter’s style of writing and her ability to tell an awesome story.
Nor am I too proud to admit that this one had me in tears throughout the entire set of closing scenes. Heck! You’d almost think that I was the one with pregnancy-addled emotions. But, no. It’s just Painter’s writing. It’s that well done.
You don’t need to know anything about the rest of her books. You can pick this one up and enjoy it from cover to cover without reading any of the rest. However, I can fairly guarantee that you’ll be reading rest and become a Kristen Painter fan if you do.
This series just gets better and better. Frost and Crowe series is a spinoff of Jayne Frost series which is a spin off of Kristen Painter’s Nocturne Falls series. Like the Jayne Frost series, Frost and Crowe is a cozy mystery. Through the 3 series we have come to love Jayne and Spider and through the latter two we have grown to love Sinclair and Sugar. In Nixed in New Orleans, Jayne, Sin and the exceptional cats are continuing their RV business trip around the US. This time they visit Sin’s childhood friend, Matt. Like always, Jayne stumbles into a couple mysteries and can’t help but investigate. This book also includes a familiar face that series fans know and love. If you enjoy a cozy mystery with some very funny moments that isn’t predictable this series is great. The newest installment is no exception. Now I just can’t wait for the next one.
I absolutely hate hate hate the name Jack Jr. It was so annoying reading that. Of all the names in the world that's what she chooses? He's not a Jr since he's named after his grandfather. I personally can't stand the Jr.for anyone. You'll always be little so and so. It's irksome. I really don't like the alternating chapters with Jayne's pov and the Sin's it's hard to keep up with and there are times you can't tell the difference between the two, only if she's thinking about food. I seriously hope when the kid is born they call him something besides Jr.
Kristen Painter is an amazing creator. I’ve read every book, series she’s written. Each catches you from page one. The bizarre unique characters bring smiles and their special talents change the simple romcoms to ones with crazy action scenes. Love the happy endings. Actually bought some hard copies and looking for large prints for my patients. Reading during recovery is extremely valuable. Reading something that catches from start to finish and has a positive ending helps people heal.
There's trouble in the quarter when Jayne and Sin go for a visit with his long time friend. The pet sitter is found dead and someone is blackmailing Sin's friend. Are they related?
I loved this book and wish it never ended. The food of course, was to die for. One villain in the story was so bad to Jayne. I was surprised at the lengths they went to. There was never a dull moment and we even got to see some of Birdie.
Sinclair and Jayne head to New Orleans after getting a call from Matt, a friend of Sinclair's. Matt is happy to see them because things are starting to get weird. There is a suicide that is no suicide, blackmail and kidnapping. All that and a surprise visitor. If you are a fan of Jayne and Sinclair, you don't want to miss this story. Just think of spider and sugar.
I love this series it keeps getting better with each book. I think spider is my favorite cat in the world! I can’t wait for baby Frost/Crowe to enter the world.
Kristen has a way of writing that makes you wish you were right there in the world with her characters. Thanks for making it so believable !
I love Jayne and Sinclair! These books are some of my favorites! Jayne, Sinclair, Spider, and Sugar head to New Orleans to visit on of Sinclair's friends before heading back to the North Pole. His friend ends up in some trouble and Jayne and Sinclair must try to help him before it's too late. I love that Birdy also is in this book LOVE HER!!! I cannot wait for the next Jayne Frost adventure.
As usual, Kristen succeeded again with this adventure in The Big Easy, New Orleans. I felt I was back in NO again. Murder, blackmail, kidnapping oh my. The pacing is great and we are swept along. In the end, Spider helps Sin find the kidnapped and drugged Jayne. Spider really loves his Mama.
More magical mystery solving with Jayne, Sim, their two cats, friends, and associates. This time it's murder, attempted murder, robbery, and blackmail while they're visiting New Orleans. Oh, and so much food, especially sweets! Their soon-to-be born son Jack Jr. also generates a lot of thought and discussion.
Like any of the other books in the Nocturne Falls Universe / Frost & Crowe Mystery series. I vould not put it down! Another night's sleep lost, but always a joy to read!
I don't know how she does it, but I love all Kristen Painter's books!
This book, like the others, was a mystery up until the end. I adore the main characters as well as the others from Nocturne Falls and elsewhere who are pulled into the stories. Plus, being a cat mom myself, I thoroughly enjoy their close relationships with their special cats. Thank you for another fun read.
The latest adventure of Frost and Crowe was really a fun read. There were more twists and turns than I expected and it kept me awake reading on a work night! SPOILER ALERT: Baby Jack Jr. still has not arrived! Jayne, Sinclair and the cats probably have at least one more adventure before Jack Jr. arrives.
I loved the first Jayne Frost books and now these with her and her husband Sin. I enjoy the adventures they go on, even though they seem to come to an end with a baby on the way. I hope there are more books in the series but if not, it ends on a very positive note. I definitely recommend this whole series.
I absolutely adore Jayne and Sinclair, so it was a real treat to listen to their newest book!! It has everything we’ve come to love in their books. A great mystery, lots of sleuthing and danger. This one though, the danger was intense and had me on the edge of my seat!! I had to find out what would happen!! Such a great book!! I highly recommend!!!
Better than the last one; but I'm so incredibly bored with the constant discussion of Jayne's pregnancy food cravings (TWO books in a row now), and that poor Sinclair still has nothing to do but wait in his unbelievably spoiled demanding wife. Ugh. I like babies in real life; but adding one to a fun book series is already unpleasant. I think I'm done with this.
The basis for a good story right there. But fear not. There is so much more. Jayne and Sin stop in New Orleans to visit an old friend of Sin’s. But Sin’s old friend has enemies he doesn’t doesn’t even know about, and the plotters may eventually go after more than Sin’s friend.
Jayne and Sinclair are at it again. This time they are in New Orleans and the mystery fits in perfectly with all the wonderful food. I absolutely love the cats and the plot is solid with just enough action to keep you turning the pages until the end. Loved it and can't wait for more.
I love these books of total fantasy. Her writing is to captivating that we get to live for a while in another world with great characters and good storylines. There is always lots of mystery, action, sweet romance and adventure. I enjoy when they reach out to Birdie in another series for her help. This is one author that I would recommend a book for a younger reader also, as she does not follow the current trend of explicit sexual scenes. I highly recommend it!!!
Jayne is now 7 months pregnant. But they decide to take a quick trip to New Orleans to visit a friend before returning to the North Pole for the birth. On the very first day, there’s a murder mystery involving a pet sitter.
Footnote: 1) While reading this, I had a constant craving for chocolate. Lol.
Fave scenes: the pet stroller, dinner at Urbano’s, and Spider finding Mama.
Love this series! Jayne and Sinclair always end up in the middle of things! This time in New Orleans whole visiting a friend of Sinclair. Fun to be had with the fur babies and Jayne’s own baby on the way eating and sloothing makes for a fun read look forward to more in this series hopefully!!
There's no secret the talking cats are my favorite part of the crow family and this book doesn't disappoint. Jayne gets lots of sugar and finds a mystery to solve. this crime solving duo is always a great time and I enjoyed their explorations of New Orleans!
