More Than a Game #2

The Perfect Putt

Rate this book
Listening time: 7 hours and 48 minutes.

Golf is for rich, pretentious jerks who need something to do while they gossip.

That’s always been my opinion. So when my best friend lands me an interview with Miles Day–the youngest golfer to ever win the Masters–I almost say no.

But the six-figure salary attached to the position is too good to pass up.

Miles gives me the job as his assistant, with one caveat–don’t fall in love with him. Easy. So easy that I laugh in his face when he so much as suggests the possibility.

Except… the more time I spend with Miles, the harder it is to resist his charming smile and glittering green eyes.

Catching feelings for him isn’t an option though, because I have goals to reach, and he has an aversion to commitment. Falling in love would be a mistake, one neither of us are willing to make.

plot:

Ellie Hart is working at a cafe shop even though that’s not her dream, her dream is to open a flower shop but she doesn’t have the budget to do it. She is offered an opportunity to work as an assistant for Miles Day, a golf player. She decides to take the opportunity since she will be making more money and will be able to open her flower shop. The only problem? She hates golf.

✧・゚: *✧・゚:* ✧・゚: *✧・゚:* ✧・゚: *✧・゚:*

my thoughts:

This was cute but nothing memorable or special. It was too insta-love for my liking, they literally start having feelings for each other after the first meeting together.
This book was wayyy different than the first one in the series.

✧・゚: *✧・゚:* ✧・゚: *✧・゚:* ✧・゚: *✧・゚:*

characters:

⛳️Ellie:
she is supposed to be this sassy independent woman but she was just giving rude and not mature. Also she is very firm about hating golf and everything around that sport… but there’s no reason for her to hate it, she mentioned that her dislike for golf is because every player is a “pretentious rich guy” and that they don’t really have any skill. She mentioned it a few times throughout the book and will also make a few remarks to Miles about how rich he is because of the sport, basically saying that she doesn’t understand why he gets to be rich only playing golf. So yeah, I don’t like her.

⛳️Miles:
He was boring, he is the typical guy who doesn’t believe in love because his parent are divorced. I honestly don’t have nothing else to say about him.

⛳️Miles & Ellie:
Their relationship was so unprofessional, they are supposed to be boss x assistant and I understand than in books with this trope they cross the boundaries at some point. But in this one the boundaries didn’t even existed in the beginning. They have “banter” between them but Ellie it’s just acting like a teenager and being disrespectful, she will be fired right away if it’s was real world but because she is cute he decided that she is the best assistant ever :/

Zero chemistry, all their conversations were dull and uninteresting. Also Ellie is delusional, he touched her arm to stop her from oncoming traffic she was acting like he was already over heels for her. [spoilers]‼️there’s one scene in which he decided that they need to take a break (they are NOT together and haven’t even kissed) and she is heart broken because he told her that he needs to focus on his tournament😐 I just can’t stand her. Miles is not good neither, he was just weird sometimes.

She also has red hair so of course his nickname for her is “red”. Authors really need to work harder and find an original nickname for redheads, this one is overused.

Content warning from the author:
Closed door romantic comedy, no explicit scenes on the page, but there are steamier makeout scenes. Toxic parents in the present and loss of a loved one in the past

Ellie & Miles
Ellie needs some extra income to open up a floral shop, so she takes a job as an assistant to pro golfer, Miles. Unfortunately, she doesn't know a tee time from tea time or how to zip it during a swing.

I'm thrilled to see golf represented in a sports romance because I don't think there are too many out there. The author does a nice job of explaining the game, but for me it bogged the story down slightly since I'm quite familiar with the ins and outs of it. My hub plays practically every weekend (except for the next couple of months, since he broke his arm), I play once in a while and my dog is even named after one of the greats, Arnie. Family fun fact ~ he's left handed, but plays right handed and I'm right handed, but play left handed.

Loved Ellie's relationship with her sister and nephew. Her reason for hating golf seemed a little crazy in my opinion, but to each their own.

So I liked Miles well enough, but I'm kind of over the whole 'I can't ever settle down and fall in love because my parents are awful and terrible role models'. Don't get me wrong, they were a nightmare, but geez follow your own heart dude. He does have some pretty great friends to keep him in check.

Overall, full of sass, banter and some cute moments.

Series notes:
Book 1’s characters make some appearances, so it'd be nice if you read that one first, but I suppose it's not totally necessary.

Narration notes:
Overall, they both did fine. Dillon's female voice wasn't great, but I pretty much expect that now.

I totally wolfed down this book! Even though I'm not big on sports, Annah's writing made me curious about golf, of all things. The story is amazing, the writing style grabs you, and the main characters are super lovable and totally swoon-worthy!

Miles and Ellie's banter is just too funny and sassy. They're like two magnets, always attracting and sparking off each other. This book is so swoon-worthy, I could read it a hundred times and still love it!

I'm already itching for the next book in the series. Can't wait to see what's next!

What you can expect:
💐 Boss X Assistant
💐 Strong friendships
💐 Pro golfer MMC
💐 Sassy FMC
💐 Banter
💐 Small beach town setting
💐 Reverse grumpy x sunshine

This is a sweet rom-com but I didn't feel the chemistry between the love interests much. It has a strong start, but I lost interest as it went on.

Would still recommend.

Book 2 in the "More Than a Game" Series

What a cute rom-com! If you are a golf girly, you will really like this one! Some nice beach vibes too!

Read if you like:

⛳️ Sports romance (Golf Lover Bonus!)
⛳️ Sweet, clean rom-coms
⛳️ Boss & Assistant trope
⛳️ Forced Proximity
⛳️ A bit of reversed Grumpy Sunshine Trope
⛳️ Sassy FMC and Pro Golfer MMC
⛳️ Great dual narrators
⛳️ Amazing friend and family dynamics
⛳️ THE. BANTER!
⛳️ Real life serious topics but healing from them!

We follow Miles and Ellie in this book. Ellie thinks golf is for the rich, pretentious jerks who need something to do while they gossip. She is not a fan! But the six-figure salary attached to the assistant to Miles, the youngest golfer to ever win the masters - she can't so no. Miles gives Ellie the job - with one rule, she can't fall in love with him. Easier said than done right?

Our girl Ellie is SASSY and the grump in the book! You really see her go through a lot of different emotions from not liking golf, being grumpy with Miles and just overall frustrations to some really sweet moments with Miles. Their banter was hilarious to me.

I loved seeing Miles stand up to his parents too in this. You can break those generational curses!

I like that Annah did this as a golf romance because you don't see that a lot out there! :)

Overall, Annah's writing is top tier and the more I read, the more I see that! Excited for book 3 in this series.

Thank you to the publisher for a copy of the audiobook to listen to and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Y’all, I haven’t highlighted a story like this in a LONG time!! (Ebook edition - I haven’t stepped over into the annotation dark side yet)
But seriously this book was full of all the swooniest moments, the funniest moments, the sweetest moments…ALL THE MOMENTS!

Annah just gets more FABULOUS with every book! And this book was no exception.

Miles & Ellie were just the greatest ever. The chemistry from the *moment* they met…🤌🏻👌🏻
OFF THE CHARTS. And then it just kept getting better as they become friends, and then…wham bam thank you ma’am…MORE!

The support in this story was just beautiful! Between Ellie & Miles themselves AND their friends! (The friend banter is always a blast)

Seriously, this story was ADORABLE! And I can’t wait to be back in this world with our sport boys. The Shaw & Sutton cameo was *chefs kiss*

I am not a golf fan, but maybe I’ll try it out now after reading this romance. I loved this one y’all! If you’re looking for a short and fast sweet romance, I would recommend Annah Conwell’s books.

I enjoyed the way the boss x assistant romance was handled. There was a lot of good angst and tension and the heated glances and little touches left me in a puddle. I connected a lot with both characters. I loved that Ellie was the natural grump who loved and loved deeply. I loved that Miles was passionate and dedicated and finally had the epiphany he needed about breaking his own cycle (been there Miles, I see you!!). While a lighter read, this is still filled with that depth I crave. And gosh dang, do I love a heated argument that turns into a feverish kiss.

Shaw and Fitz were my fav too. I’m all for men helping men realize they are acting like idiots. Having Shaw and Fitz dedicate time to helping MIles see past his own insecurities and mental blocks showed off the best kind of friendships. I loved how they cared for each other.

Fantastic banter, swoony kisses, and a quick read that has the best kind of summer vibes.

Overall audience notes:
- Golf Romance
- Language: none
- Romance: heated kisses
- Content Warnings: mentions of divorce

Another amazing read by Annah!

Every book I have picked up so far by this author I have given a 5 star rating.

It has the perfect mix of sweet and swoony characters & moments, as well as some dark and relatable family drama.

I loved the FMC so much in this one. She was so witty and smart, and I loved the connection between the two main characters.

I was hooked right from the beginning all the way until the end, and I devoured it all in one day!

You get:
• Dual POV
• Sweet Romance
• Sports Romance
• Boss MMC/Assistant FMC
• Tension/Slow Burn
• Family Drama
• HEA

I highly recommend this author! Available on KU, ebook, paperback, and audiobook (Aug 27th).

Cute story. Kind of cool that I unknowingly read it the same week of the US Open. I love the beach vibes! A fun lighthearted summer read. There were times that the characters felt kinda immature (particularly toward the end and the scene dealing with Miles parents).

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for providing me with this ALC. Assistant to a pro golfer who says he’ll never get married… I’m sure she’ll change his mind, right? Not without a few obstacles along the way. This was a cute little closed door rom-com. Easy listen and great narrators.

3.5 ⭐️

Admittedly, I'm not the biggest full on romance reader - so why did I pick this one up? I'll just say it. It's the golf.

Yes, the secret is out. I enjoy golf (though, don't ask me to explain the terminologies within it because enjoying vs. understanding are two different things here, haha). We're swamped with football/hockey romances but golf? I knew I'd like to see how this went. I've also heard great things about Annahs books from trusted friends so I figured let's give it a go. After all, who doesn't want a book that makes them smile. It did not disappoint!

I am so glad to say that this had exactly what I look for, especially when it comes to romance, and that is depth. As a character driven reader I want my characters to have something bigger going on rather than just the feelings for each other. I want to know them as they fall for each other. Annah did a good job adding the depth I was seeking in BOTH of our main characters, Miles and Ellie, while still giving the lovey dovey moments their time (did I roll my eyes sometimes, yes. but that's a me thing- romance readers will probably love it lol).

The end was truly where it shone for me - I was rooting for Ellie when she had her moment to stick up for her and Miles (what a sceneeeee, I was here for it!). Ellie is a character that is full of sass which just added to it. The family dynamics- whew, they seemed realistic in this situation and I love how Annah approached it and how the characters grew. Also, if you love a big moment- there's a swoon worthy moment at the end of this story that just shows how great the male main character Miles is and how much he believes in Ellie while still letting her shine. It did thaw the heart out a little here because a supportive partner is a giant yes. They believed in and encouraged each other while still keeping it real and telling it how it is.

If you're looking for some depth, smiles, laughs, sass, and sports this is for you. Oh, and if you aren't a golf fan, this is not loaded with terms or overload on the sport so you can still pick this up- it just added to the joy for me. Definitely one that came for me at the right time!

This is a solid 3.5 star for me, which I consider to be a strong rating for a romance story but I think if you are a true rom=com gal this will be one that you will enjoy even more. Bonus points that it is a clean one! Additionally, if you are an audio listener, the audiobook was a great way to listen to this one since we do get both a male and female narrator which I think makes a romance story even better to listen to and brings it to life!

*Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for an advanced listening copy. All thoughts are honest & completely my own.

This had some sweet moments, but they didn’t really land for me. I’m going to try to explain why, but it has nothing to do with the writing, which was great!

I think I honestly didn’t feel Miles and Ellie’s connection and didn’t understand what they liked about each other. Their interactions and conversations felt awkward at the beginning and then suddenly they’re super into each other and every touch is electric. It almost felt like enemies to lovers, at least for Ellie, but there was no transition from one to the other (it felt like a lot of telling rather than showing.) There was some jumping ahead in the book, which I think was supposed to help explain the quick relationship progression, but it just felt more confusing than helpful in my opinion.

Also, the whole boss / employee relationship felt weird and unprofessional. Ellie was super rude to Miles when she first got hired. Not in a cute / sassy way, but in a “that was mean” way. In the real world, she would have been fired immediately. But she’s cute, so I guess it’s fine! That was sarcasm btw. Miles was also super unprofessional right off the bat and it felt a bit icky. He gave her a nickname, was thinking about her skin, her scent, her curves, teasing her, talking in her ear etc. It felt like too much, too fast considering he’s her boss.

Honestly, their interactions had me scratching my head more often than not like when Ellie threw a tantrum and stormed off because he spent time with his friends instead of her.Her reaction felt too extreme for where their relationship was (honestly too extreme in general), so again, I felt like the unfolding of their relationship was too fast and missed a bunch of necessary steps that build connection.

Overall the relationship just didn’t click for me, but I’m sure many people will absolutely love it so if you enjoy clean sports romance and the boss/employee trope, you should give this a try.

“Red, keep the sweatshirt. I have plenty of them, and it looks better on you than it does on me.”

Man, these two are just the cutest!! I loved the second installment of the More Than a Game series! Ellie and Miles had amazing banter and chemistry right from the get go. I love how they connected through the beach and the diner and their shared love of key lime pie. There were so many sizzling moments and the build up was perfection! I love Ellie’s relationship with her sister Naomi (I NEED her story!). And it was so satisfying to see Miles stand up to his toxic parents. I love this series and can’t get enough!

⛳️ The vibes:
- boss x assistant
- Sassy FMC
- friendships

🏌🏻 My thoughts:
I loved seeing a sports romance with a sport that isn’t super trendy on my shelves. This is my first golf romance, and I loved the way Annah incorporated the golfing scenes. It made me so curious and interested in golf and now I need more.

⛳️ As for the main leads, Miles and Ellie had some very sweet moments together. I loved Miles and his backstory. I felt really bad for him regarding his parents. 🙈 But his troubles did give him depth that I loved to see.

⛳️ As for Ellie -Oh my goodness. Boy is she prickly. She’s often difficult and rude, and the little do-gooder in me was shocked at how disrespectful she was to her BOSS. 😂🙈. I struggled understanding why Ellie was so against golfing and golfers. While she felt quite difficult for me to love, I did see enough of her sweet moments that she wasn’t altogether terrible.

🏌🏻 There was some telling versus showing and some time jumps that I would have wanted to see because I did really enjoy Miles and Ellie and wanted to see more of those sweet moments between them. I toggled between 3.5 and 4 stars on this one but feel good about a 4 star because I keep thinking about it days later and because of how much I enjoyed Miles and his entire vibe.

⛳️ As a side note- I would love to see a book with Naomi as the FMC because I feel like her story is so deep and raw. And I NEED IT RIGHT NOW.

Release date: June 6, 2024.

Thank you so much to Annah Conwell for the gifted copy.

Oh my word this book was so much and so stinking adorable!😍

I loved Miles and Ellie from the very first page, and was rooting for them from their very first meeting!!

I loved the beachy setting of this book, too. It was very summery and atmospheric. It made me want to go back to the beach, honestly. 😅

I’m really enjoying this series, but let it be known that I do not like any sports at all😅🤣 but this series is super cute and I am so so so excited for the next one to come out!!🤩

The Perfect Putt was such a great story! It is book two in the More Than a Game series but can easily be enjoyed without reading book one. I did read book one, The Golden Goal, and loved it, so I was very happy to find out that Shaw and Sutton had some scenes in this book, as well.

Miles and Ellie grew to care for each other in such a sweet way. They definitely seemed like opposites when the story began. Ellie was not a fan of golf or professional golfers and Miles was determined to stay aloof and guard his heart from getting to know Ellie more. Yet, Ellie was a great assistant to Miles and they both began to really connect with each other as they worked together.

There were some big hurdles to overcome in the story, especially related to Miles’s dysfunctional family and his fear of falling in love. I listened to the audio book version of The Perfect Putt and it was beautifully performed in dual narration. I loved this story from start to finish, including the bonus epilogue that is available.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Audio Version🎧Via Netgalley
Narrator 5/5

The Perfect Putt was such a sweet story. I am not a huge fan of golf- just thinking about it makes me kinda wanna snore, but I requested this book because of the author. This is my second book by Annah Conwell, and she is quickly becoming an auto read author - especially if I am in the mood for a cozy, sweet and clean read. The best part- the FMC wasn’t a huge fan of golf either, so that made it a bit relatable. I liked both of the MCs and their banter and the ease of their friendship. I thought the writing and plot were great and had a fun time reading it. The audiobook had duel POV narrators and did a great job of becoming the characters and held my attention the whole way through. I would definitely recommend this author for those looking for quick and easy, feel good reads.

Overall, I really enjoyed this read. The majority was super cute!
But the last handful of chapters turned pretty cheesy. I mean, it’s only been one month. And we’re in LOVE?!?! (Don’t even get me going on the epilogue!)

This story was so freaking sweet! I devoured it in one day and LOVED IT! I am so excited to read the rest of the series! It’s amazing 🥰
Miles and Ellie are adorable! I loved them from the beginning 🥰 I loved how he always care for her and made sure she was okay💗
He didn’t like the whole idea of marriage but the Ellie came into his life🥹 and the rest is a happily ever after 🤭
I loved how he encouraged her in her dreams and how Ellie, though she hated golf in the beginning, supported him and made a good effort to get to know and like the sport he loves🥹 she was sweet and so kind, but also I loved how sassy and feisty she was! Ahhh!
I also really enjoyed the banter between Miles and his friends, specifically Shaw and Fritz, I love Tahoe they encouraged him to take a chance with Ellie, and not give up on the idea of marriage just because of his parents 🥹
Definitely recommend this book! 👏🏼🥰

I've arrived at a terrible conclusion: I like Miles Day. I like his messy hair that's the color of beach sand after it rains. I like his green eyes that remind me of the sea glass in the wind chime on my front porch.
I like his passion and determination. I even like the stupid smirk he gives me when he's teasing me, and the way he chuckles at my sassy remarks. Against all odds-or rather against the fact that he plays golf-I like him. And I don't know what to do about it.

"I’ll wash the sweatshirt and give it back to you once I'm back to normal."

"Because it's yours. And probably expensive."
"You think everything I own is expensive."
"Because it is."
"Red, keep the sweatshirt. I have plenty of them, and it looks better on you than it does on me."
"Okay, 'Il keep it."
"Good."

Because like I said earlier, I play to win. And I plan on winning her over.

I've never bothered to get to know a woman like this before. But now I know that she loves flowers and the beach, that her sister is her best friend and her nephew is her world. She loves to wear lavender and green but she likes to decorate in shades of blue, and her favorite way to eat pizza is straight out of the fridge. I'm collecting details like shells in a bucket, and each time I get one all I can think is more. I want to know more. I want more of her.

I can't remember if I have reviewed any of Annah's other novels before but they are all soooooo good!!!
Her writing just hits. I love her banter between the romantic interests, her always having fun family or friend interactions to add to the comedic relief, her adding some real life serious topics that have some healing aspects and not just there for drama conflict, and the third act breakup isn't the dreaded miscommunication and doesn't last long or happen at all. I don't mind conflict because that is real life and when getting to know each other there will be things the other isn't used to. Relationships are two different individuals becoming one complete couple.
This the second book in her sports series and I am not a golf gal like our FMC Ellie but it was so fun and the growth of the relationship was adorable.

Ok. I liked enough about this book to finish it, but boy did I get fed up with a lot along the way. The premise is fun but their feelings were pretty instant and even more annoying, the flack and knowingness from his friends so quickly killed me. I’m so sick of the all your friends know you love her before you do trope. I like when the couple has some time to figure it out themselves without people whispering in their ears. I also hated the way she acted after they had their little trip to Cape Alamanda. They have the most surface level conversation in the car - and even then she refuses to answer a fairly unobtrusive question and acts like he inquired about her social security number - and afterward seems to think they had the most intense bonding session and that she peeled open her heart to let him have a peek instead of just starting to become friends. She then feels entitled to 45% of his attention despite being his employee and having his friends in town for a visit! See quote below:

“After our night in Cape Alamanda, I thought we’d gotten closer. That maybe we could be friends, however odd of a pairing we make. But it was like as soon as Shaw and Sutton arrived, he retreated. It stung. I opened up to him about Owen and Naomi in a way that I haven’t with anyone other than Molly. And that vulnerability was repaid by him avoiding me.”

This was such a gross overreaction and I could overlook it if she understood it was unreasonable, but no! When he approaches her of his own volition when he sees her at a restaurant - taking time away from his friends at the table - she gives him the cold shoulder and proceeds to run out the door and yell at him in the street! Such a ridiculous tantrum and showing of her hand; I was embarrassed for her and she didn’t even have the decency to be embarrassed herself.

One other small but noteworthy ick was this: “‘Good girl,’ he murmurs, his breath hot against my ear. ‘Now close your eyes.’” While doing the cliche teaching her to golf. Gah! What is with authors feeling the need to throw this into their books willy nilly! Just because people seem to be into this kinda thing right now, doesn’t mean every book or every MC can pull it off. It felt so out of place and wrong that I was surprised she didn’t have the FMC make fun of it!

And then at the end, he is still in denial to his friends about his feelings for her and resolves to actively hide his feelings but he proceeds to be the MOST obvious. To a gross level. When she injures herself on the beach, he oh so dramatically acts like she is on the brink of death, carrying her inside after already having hung on her every movement all night, and staying with her despite the fact that there’s an actual healthcare worker in their midst.

All in all, some cute aspects but vastly overshadowed by the dramatics and annoyances throughout. Not nearly as good as the first in the series.
