An activist congresswoman and a pragmatic vice president must balance their attraction with their high-profile careers in this escapist romance written by a former D.C. insider.
Cindy Wight was elected on a wave of activist support, sent to Congress to change the status quo. After a career of proving herself as more than just a pretty face, she is ready to hit the ground running. The last thing she wants is to fall into a man's shadow—especially the eligible bachelor VP.
Alexander Drake is in his second term as a loyal vice president, and everyone is waiting for him to announce his run for the top job. Alex knows his next election will be easier to win with a wife on his arm—but he wants someone for more than photo ops; he wants a partner.
Sparks fly when Cindy meets the VP in negotiations over contentious cannabis legislation. Conference room meetings quickly turn to late-night flirty phone calls. The heat between them grows until they finally agree to pursue their attraction in secret, even finding some time on Air Force Two. But such a high-profile relationship can't stay in the dark for long. When rumors start to swirl and Cindy becomes the target of harassment, the scrutinizing public eye puts pressure on their budding relationship. Can Cindy and Alex risk their ambitious careers for love?
Alicia Wilder is a Colorado romance author. She writes spicy stories with modern settings, external obstacles, and imperfect people who get their happily ever after. Her novels can stand alone but are interconnected.
A decent read but felt kind of cliche and I often felt annoyed enough that I didn’t really want to finish. I pushed through and did finish- the ending and a story were good but maybe the story just wasn’t for me? I wouldn’t discourage others from reading but definitely wasn’t my favorite romance of the year.
Thank you to NetGalley & the publisher for the opportunity to read this arc in exchange for my honest opinion.
Thank you to Literary Media Tours and Alicia Wilder for the ARC of My Secret Vice. As a longtime fan of The West Wing (check out my amazing West Wing mug, btw), My Secret Vice immediately captured my heart with its clever mix of politics, passion, and unforgettable characters! Alicia Wilder has crafted a steamy, irresistible story that’s every bit as intense as it is fun.
The political plot lines are sharp, keeping you on your toes while offering an inside glimpse of life behind the scenes in the halls of power. As someone who loves the smart, fast-paced dialogue in The West Wing, I was thrilled to see the same energy here. The characters are complex and magnetic, pulling you into their world from the very first page. And oh, the spice! The chemistry between the leads is undeniable, and those romantic moments are both swoon-worthy and seriously steamy. If you're looking for a book that mixes political intrigue with a dose of heat, My Secret Vice is your perfect read. It’s a captivating ride that will have you hooked from start to finish! Highly recommend to all my fellow politics/romance lovers.
I really enjoyed this one! While emotions and tensions are high during this 2024 election season, I replaced the real world with the immediate undeniable sexual tension between the older, single, smoking hot VP and a beautiful freshman female congresswoman passionate about her agenda. Sign me up every day of the week 🥵🔥
Read this if you enjoy: Politics and political romances (duh), secret/forbidden/workplace relationships, strong and passionate female MCs, mature main characters, dual POVs
Thank you so much to Alicia & Literary Media Tours for the gifted copy of this perfectly timed new release!
Thank you to the author and Literary Media Tours for the eARC.
I’m not usually into political plot lines—it’s just too close to reality for me at times—but I got into this one.
I appreciated that both main characters were older, you don’t often see a heroine over the age of 40 in contemporary romance. And the older I get, the more I prefer seeing aging characters. I just need someone else to complain about a sore back upon waking, okay??
My Secret Vice felt like a forbidden romance, the push and pull between Alex and Cindy was so believable. It’s got to be so tough to live in the public eye, knowing that your every moment could affect your career. Can you imagine having to call your boyfriend’s secret service staff and having all messages and calls monitored? Makes me glad I’m just a normal human being, I can play around on social media all I want.
Overall this was an entertaining read with enjoyable characters (Thor, the dog, was my favorite!).
I really tried to read this book in one sitting but my eyes weren’t cooperating and I had to take a little (ok, 8 hr) sleep break 😂
I really enjoyed political TV shows like The West Wing and Madam Secretary, and this was it in book form! So fun to read!!
I really enjoyed the characterisation of Cindy from the start, and the conversations she has about writing her memoir. That was a great way for us to understand where Cindy started and how she got to being a Congresswoman, while also delving into minority issues and discrimination.
The tension between Cindy and Alex was also a delight to read, and how they respect and support each other.
Maybe it’s because it’s an election year? Idk but I’ve been so intrigued by political romance stories lately so when I saw this was described as a more romantic West Wing, it immediately drew me in! My Secret Vice follows Cindy, a green and bold congresswoman (from Colorado so that’s fun 😉) who is trying to leave a lasting legacy in Washington DC. Her fierceness and courage to push against the status quo is making her a well-known name in politics and has caught the attention of the Vice President (a notorious bachelor) to work together on a proposed bill.
This story has romance, definitely, but I think it also did an amazing job of highlighting topics we don’t see enough of in contemporary stories like women who prioritize their careers and postpone having a family, the double standard when it comes to successful women vs. men in politics, sexism women face in more male dominated fields, etc. My Secret Vice is so different from other stories I’ve read and I’m honored to be a part of its publicity tour!
Read if you like: ❤️ political romance 💙 workplace ❤️ mature protagonists 💙 forced proximity ❤️ secret/ taboo 💙 rivals to lovers
Thank you so much @literarymediatours and @aliciabwilder for the advance read!
I really enjoyed the first half of My Secret Vice by Alicia Wilder, especially the flirty banter and the gradual build of attraction between the main characters. However, I felt the conflict dragged on a bit too long, especially with Cindy’s lingering fear of commitment and the ongoing miscommunication between her and Alex, which made it hard for me to fully connect with the story at times.
On the positive side, I appreciated that the characters were older—both over 40—which felt refreshing, even though they had some playful, almost childish moments. It was nice to see a romance focused on people with a bit more life experience.
I do wish there had been more in-person scenes between them, rather than so many phone conversations and sneaking around. It felt like their actual time together was too brief and glossed over, which made me crave more depth in their relationship.
The epilogue was sweet and gave a satisfying conclusion. I couldn’t imagine a better way for their story to end.
A political romance where the love interests are from the same political side? Sign me up. I really enjoyed this story of newcomer Colorado congresswoman (think The Squad with AOC, Senator Rashida Tlaib and co) in town to shake up her own party and pass legislation regarding cannabis falling in love with the Vice President whom happily upholds status quo/the establishment. I really enjoyed the author's experience as a DC journalist which provided some authenticity.
So why only 3.5 stars?
Overall though this was fun and I will read the author's back catalogue and any future work.
Thank you to the author for the gifted final copy. This was pitched to me as The West Wing but make it spicy. And since I loved The West Wing, I was really interested. I am happy to report that I really enjoyed the book and characters.
Focusing on a hotshot freshman house representative from Colorado who is selected to work with the hot terminally single vice president on a drug bill to help assist legalization of cannabis. Sparks fly between them and soon they are in a secret relationship, but nothing remains secret for long in Washington DC.
I can recommend this sweet story to those who like political drama, workplace romance, and meddling.
My Secret Vice was such a fun read for my West Wing loving, romantic heart! This is a great book for those who are fans of political, workplace romances.
This book has Cindy (FMC), who is a Representative, and Alex (MMC), who is the Vice President. They're both in their 40s, they're single, and trying to navigate the challenges that poses for each of them in their capacities. Their crush and how their relationship developed was really cute. I thought Alicia tackled the challenges of a woman in a male dominated workplace, and the perspectives the public can have related to single men. I also appreciated how the struggle with Alex having a high level job looks with someone in a position "beneath" his. I loved the sneaking around and the dynamic their relationship has.

Thank you, Alicia and Literary Media Tours, for sending me a copy of this book!
My Secret Vice offers a perfect balance between steamy romance and gripping political intrigue. The relationship between Cindy and Alex had me hooked from the start—there's undeniable passion between them that practically leaps off the page.
Alicia does a fantastic job of building the tension between them, both in terms of their political positions and their romantic connection. It’s not just about attraction; it’s about two characters who challenge and complement each other, making their relationship feel real and dynamic.
The political plotline adds another layer to the story, offering us a behind-the-scenes look at the complexities of power and decision-making. It feels sharp, relevant, and totally engaging. And yes, there’s plenty of spice to keep things exciting! Their chemistry is intense, and those steamy moments will leave you fanning yourself, no doubt about it.
If you're looking for a read that blends passionate romance with high-stakes political drama, My Secret Vice is for you. Alicia Wilder manages to craft a compelling narrative that keeps you turning the pages while delivering swoon-worthy moments that romance lovers will adore. Highly recommend this one if you’re a fan of The West Wing-style dialogue and strong character dynamics!
I want to extend a huge thank you to Alicia Wilder and Literary Media Tours for providing me with a copy of My Secret Vice! I absolutely devoured this book—five stars, without question! As a political science major, I found myself geeking out over the way Wilder expertly weaves politics into a sweet and engaging romance.
Cindy Wight, a driven congresswoman, and Alexander Drake, the charismatic VP, navigate the tricky balance between their high-powered careers and an unexpected romance. The tension between their professional ambitions and personal desires is captured so well. Sparks fly in political negotiations, turning into late-night phone calls and secret rendezvous aboard Air Force Two. But as their connection grows, so does the pressure from public scrutiny. Wilder captures the nuances of a high-profile relationship with incredible depth, while also giving us swoon-worthy moments that romance lovers crave.
If you love a sweet romance mixed with political intrigue and a strong focus on relationships, My Secret Vice is a must-read!
In *My Secret Vice* Alicia Wilders weaves a tale of ambition, power, and unexpected romance that strikes a chord in the current political climate. Cindy Wight, our strong and determined protagonist, is a breath of fresh air—a Congresswoman who stands firm in her beliefs and refuses to be reduced to a pretty face in the male-dominated world of politics. That’s why her attraction to Vice President Alexander Drake, a man who is both charismatic and driven, creates such an intriguing tension.
Alexander, on the other hand, is equally captivating. Known as a loyal VP who is clearly on track to run for the presidency, Alex isn't just looking for a marriage of convenience to win votes. His longing for a genuine partner in both politics and life sets the stage for his chemistry with Cindy. The sparks between them—initially kindled in contentious cannabis legislation negotiations—soon burst into a secret, passionate romance. Late-night calls and even covert rendezvous on Air Force Two add a tantalizing level of secrecy and excitement, making the relationship all the more thrilling as I couldn’t stop reading
🇺🇸The chemistry between Cindy and Alex is electric, and I loved how their professional lives bled into their personal relationship. 🇺🇸Cindy's strength as a character really stood out, and seeing her navigate the politics of her career and love life felt empowering. 🇺🇸The political backdrop added a layer of realism that made the romance even more compelling.
✨ A huge thank you @literarymediatours and @aliciabwilder for the chance to enjoy this unforgettable E-ARC!
“A man invented the idea of abstinence grating power.”
Unfortunately, My Secret Vice wasn’t the right book for me. If details give some credibility to the story, they completely lost me here (because it isn’t my world… at all). It felt a bit “cold” and technical to me (except for the *chef kiss* feminist speech) and I missed this “encounter”, remaining unable to connect with the characters. That’s a shame because they are in their forties, and I usually love that choice in romance. I enjoyed some moments though, and I’m sure that Cindy and Alex’s story will find its readers. The “distance”/forbidden romance part, for example, was great, with a connection that had to happen through an epistolary/phone. (Spoiler: The epilogue was also a problem for me, as they didn’t truly discuss the subject during the book, and it didn’t feel necessary nor empowering, but that’s a very personal opinion).
Thank you to the author for the eARC via NetGalley. My opinions are my own.
.Forbidden .Workplace .Lots of political intrigue .Dual POV
When I first read the blurb, it gave me major Red, White & Royal Blue vibes but MF instead of MM, so of course I had to read it. And I'm glad I did, this book was a fun read, especially for its good representation of a successful woman in her forties. I love seeing more mature characters who make level-headed decisions and actually talk about their feelings. Though I will say, it got a bit shaky in this regard during the second half.
I don’t usually read books centred around US politics. Since I’m not from the US, I try to steer clear, it’s all a bit too much for me. And honestly, US politics creep me out; it doesn’t feel quite like the democracy people think it is, in my humble opinion. I expected a bit more depth, considering the author is a political journalist, but I guess that’s just me. Also, calling the US Vice President the second most powerful man in the world felt like a stretch. And don’t even get me started on the “leader of the free world” bit, so US-centric! It would’ve been nice to see a more realistic portrayal, but I understand that I’m probably not the target audience.
The plot was intriguing, and I was constantly on edge, waiting for things to blow up in Alex and Cindy’s faces. The romance started off strong, but I wish it had stayed a bit more central throughout. That said, the spice was top-notch, so no complaints there.
Spoiler alert:
Overall, I’m glad I picked this one up. It’s a fun, quick, escapist romance that you can easily read in one sitting, though definitely different from what I usually go for. This was my first book by this author, but it won’t be my last. I’ve already got my eye on a couple of novellas about some side characters from this book, and I can’t wait to read their stories. Max, I’m looking at you!
(3.75 stars) My Secret Vice was a great light read for this political season - or any time. What happens when a new Congresswoman and the sitting Vice President fall for each other?
Cindy is a freshman representative in Congress, elected due to her activism over the years, with an emphasis on cannabis-related legislation. Alex is the establishment Vice President tasked with working on compromise legislation with Cindy. They are both mature people - she’s 45, he 50 - and neither has ever been married. As they realize their attraction, they also realize they need to keep their new relationship secret, for both their sakes, partly in terms of the pending legislation and partly in terms of their reputation - which, to be honest, is more of an issue for Cindy. Her situation highlights the double standard women still have to confront.
Written by a former Washington journalist, you can feel the authenticity of the settings. Each chapter included parts from Cindy’s POV and from Alex’s POV.
I was a bit disappointed in the epilogue - just a bit too neat and unrealistic.
Warning: more than one explicit scene between the two protagonists
Thank you to NetGalley, Literary Media Tours and Rocket Books for the opportunity to read a review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This was a West Wing for romance book lovers to read!
Cindy is an outspoken first term congresswoman who is more for the cause than the world of Washington DC. But she is also our mature 45 year old protagonist FMC
Alex in his second successful term as VP of the United Sates, his main focus is what comes next...naturally becoming President. Also in mid 40's his biggest uncertainty is will the US accept a "Single" President.
When Alex and Cindy meet to go over negotiations for her Cannabis legislation things heat up quickly. I loved this forbidden and secret romance between two mature characters with more than their hearts to lose. The chemistry was 🔥 with a few open door steamy scenes.
How they navigate this unconventional dating and what it means to the future for both Cindy and Alex and what they thought they wanted in a partner and career. What are they willing to risk to be together.
The Epilogue was a perfect ending to the story ❤️🤍💙
Thas I really enjoyed this book, it was a perfect and much needed escape during this election week!

There is so much to love about this book! First, the sexy bachelor vice president and the gorgeous congresswomen who can’t keep their eyes off each other. Then the setting, Washington DC, where all the social media is not just there for the politics, maybe they’re around looking for who’s dating, who’s flirting, who’s talking??? The president, Tim and his wife Anita were a fun couple and enjoyed the first lady trying to direct the VP to love. All the time Alex and Cindy spent together seemed realistic when you both have demanding jobs. The couple seemed realistic for working in politics and having all eyes and ears on you. I was rooting for them, but I also didn’t want anyone to give up on their career goals. Could they have their careers and love? That’s something women have been trying to balance forever and now Alex Drake is contemplating it too, love it! Trying to accept each other for who they are and where they are in life is the purest love. Thank you, Alicia, for writing a book about two people passionate about their careers as well as each other!
I think this is a good romance book for fans of Red White & Royal Blue or other romances that involve political figures. I think the banter between the characters was enjoyable and the book is an easy but fun read as it follows the standard romance plot points. I did grow to really like Alex and I do like his relationship with the Secret Service and how his agents served as side characters that were either obstacles or help to him without the agents truly realizing it. Honestly I wish I got to see more interactions between Alex and his Secret Service because the few interactions they had and any scene that the agents were in was enjoyable and I thought it was really cute.
I do like the duel POV and even though the voices weren't all that different from one another I think seeing the perspective of either Alex or Cindy was fun and helped to show the back and forth between them and hidden feelings.
My Secret Vice: An Escapist Political Romance (Mountains & Monuments) Alicia Wilder
My Secret Vice by Alicia Wilder is a thrilling political romance that gave me major Scandal vibes but with a twist—this time, she’s in the power seat. Cindy Wight is a strong, driven Congresswoman, and her chemistry with Vice President Alexander Drake is electric. Their secret relationship starts over political negotiations, turning into late-night calls and romantic tension. The fact that both characters are in their 40s adds a refreshing, mature layer to their romance. The story blends high-stakes political drama with a captivating love story. I loved their banter, the sparks between them, and the way they navigate their ambitious careers while trying to make their relationship work. If you’re into political intrigue and steamy romance, this book is a must-read!
Thank you @literarymediatours for my arc, opinions are my own
My Secret Vice was a wonderful read! My first book by Alicia Wilder, and it was unexpectedly good!
The book is about Congresswoman Cindy and Vice President Alex. Their passion is evident from the start. Alicia gave an excellent combination of a secret hot romance and political intrigue. I particularly liked the fact that they are single and in their forties. Their relationship was well-developed. I was rooting for them, even if it wasn't an easy journey. They both challenged and complimented one another. The political plot was also an interesting aspect of the story for me. The narrative definitely kept my attention.
What to Expect: 🤫 Secret Dating 🗳️ Political but Escapist 💕 In their 40s ❤️🔥 Rivals to Lovers 🗣️ Dual POV ❣️Contemporary Political Romance 👩❤️👨 Spicy Open Door
Overall this was a great read! Thank you to author Alicia Wilder and Literary Media Tours for the gifted e-ARC. All opinions are my own.
I absolutely loved this DC romance (former DCer here!) about a VP with Presidential ambitions who falls for a progressive Congresswoman when they meet while working on a bill together. While they’re from the same party, there’s a lot of complications for a sitting Vice President to actually date combined with the fact that she’s only in politics as long as it furthers the agenda she’s committed to. Dating him could make it impossible to pass the bill for the platform she was elected on. Meanwhile, he’s juggling competing priorities and hers isn’t the only political agenda he needs to pay attention to but when they’re alone and can forget about politics, things are perfect between them. I thought the characters in this were really well-developed and I loved the chemistry between the two. I would definitely recommend this and would read more by the author!
My Secret Vice was a fun read and an escape from the current political climate
Cindy is a congresswoman trying to gain support for a bill. Alex is the vice president of the United States. They originally meet to discuss the bill and details of getting it to legislation, but soon sparks fly.
I liked both the leads, and appreciated the way they handled a complex situation in very realistic ways. The story evolved in a fun way and had a good mix of politics and romance
Probably my biggest disappointment with this book comes from the comparison to West Wing. The banter and dialogue just can't hold a candle to Sorkin's style. I aslo wish the epilogue had been left off or unfolded differently.
Thank you Literary Media Tours for the gifted copy.
This book is West Wing as a romcom.
Cindy White is a progressive congresswoman from Colorado working on cannabis legislation. She’s an up-and-coming lawmaker trying to hold her own against the establishment, namely Vice President Alex Drake. Their mutual attraction is palpable from the minute they meet, and they have to find a way to work together while hiding their relationship from the public.
Review: I am a huge West Wing fan so having the White House and Congress as the setting for the story made it so fun. I enjoyed seeing how legislation works back-and-forth between the White House and the Senate and House of Representatives. It made for an exciting story. Alex toes the line and does what he’s told by the president, just waiting his turn. Cindy reminds me of an AOC type character—younger female, ready to make a difference in Washington.
This book is spicy. Not so much that it’s overwhelming to the story but enough that it took me back a little bit. I wasn’t expecting some of the imagery in the initial fantasies happening between the characters. When they finally get together, it’s an interesting dynamic—a woman who wants the power on the house floor but wants to give it up in the bedroom. I wasn’t expecting it.
The miscommunication trope strikes midway through the story, surprisingly. At the start of the relationship Cindy loves Alex’s clear communication. When the relationship starts to take off and they’re trying to hide it from the public, suddenly it’s not even miscommunication just not communicating. They completely avoid talking about their relationship.
Overall, a fun, sexy romantic comedy definitely worth a read if you’re into the West Wing, Veep, or ear real-life politics. It was something different. I can only imagine what would happen if a congresswoman started dating the vice president— the polling would be interesting .

My Secret Vice centers on Candy a congresswoman who came to DC to advocate and bring about change on issues that matter to her. In the course of her work, she meets Alex the current VP and aspiring presidential candidate and sparks fly. This book has both political and romantic elements that it is trying to juggle. I enjoyed how the author tried to address the misogyny faced by women in our world and in the political realm. I would have enjoyed an even deeper dive into the political side. The romantic elements work well and have a fair amount of spice.
All in all, a good light read. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of My Secret Vice in exchange for an honest opinion. This book is available now.
This book initially drew my attention because I like books about politics. Cindy is a newbie congresswoman that is determined to pass legislation on the bill that got her elected. She has her own squad which makes me think of AOC. CIindy ends up having to work with the good looking bachelor vice president to push through her cannabis bill. They make an instant connection and embark on a secret romantic relationship although both are determined not to let it derail their political ambitions. I loved the political aspects and the details and descriptions of Congress and Air Force Two. The book was well writen with good pacing and an interesting plot!
I thoroughly enjoyed the politics of this book, but I also consider The West Wing to be the best TV show ever made! It was refreshing to have two middle aged people who had focussed on their careers at the expense of relationships and family life Seeing their internal struggles with what was expected of them by others, including society, and what they expected of each other and themselves was wonderfully done.
Thanks to NetGalley for the early copy of this tale- it intrigued me enough to break my limiting of ARCs for the year!
This was such a great read! This book has everything for political romance lovers. It has great banter between the characters, a complicated policy issue, and smashes the patriarchy! I really enjoyed how Cindy balanced her attraction to Alex while trying to maintain her commitment to the policy and protect her reputation as a woman in Congress. I think Wilder handled these complex issues really well. The open door scenes were well done and there was palpable tension between Cindy and Alex. It was also nice to read a romance novel in which the characters were over 26 years old.
