For some, the only way to possess magic is to steal it from others.

Born without magic, Davis is an outcast in his own shapeshifter family. Yearning for his father’s approval, he sets down a path that intertwines with Iris, a girl whose own ambitions are hindered by a mysterious illness.

Their quest leads to Yuras, one of California’s smallest towns, unremarkable until they discover a cave of magic-transferring stones. Now they have a chance to change their fates. But they’re not alone.

When locals stumble upon the cave, they unknowingly set into motion a series of events that threatens to expose Davis’s past.

As dark truths surface, one question endures: How much are they willing to take in their quest for power?

A multigenerational mystery told across converging timelines and multiple character point of views, with shapeshifters inspired by Chinese mythology, adventure, and political intrigue.

An amazing debut novel! This captivating story weaves together the lives of several characters across various time periods, revealing the intricate connections between them. The story is a remarkable fusion of magical realism and Chinese mythology, creating a truly unique experience. As I listened to the audiobook, it took some time to acclimate to the time jumps, but the plot proved to be so engaging that it quickly captured my full attention. I'm eagerly anticipating the next installment—this is a journey you won't want to miss!

***Thank you to NetGalley, Emily Renk Hawthrone, and Hawk Ridge Press for graciously sending me the audiobook to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***

This debut was very unique and well done!! Of Mountain and Seas blends multiple timelines and POVs into a story about shifters, power, and generational secrets, inspired by Chinese mythology and The Classics of Mountains and Seas (山海经).

I’ve previously heard about the húli jīng, but this book introduced me to so many other mythical creatures I hadn’t come across before, so I went on a deep dive, and I found a pretty good site that had some explanations. and like I mentioned in my review of Among the Burning Flowers, I love looking up stuff while reading, so this made the reading experience all the more exciting.

The plot is elaborate, sometimes almost overwhelming with the number of characters and details to keep track of, but when the pieces finally came together, it was satisfying like watching a complicated picture puzzle come together.

I will admit, towards the ending, things got a little confusing (my brain was working overtime to keep the timelines straight) but the payoff was worth it. For a debut, this is seriously impressive: it is thoughtful, well-researched, and rich with lore.

If you like multigenerational mysteries, shapeshifters, and stories that draw references from Chinese mythology, Of Mountain and Seas is definitely worth picking up.

Romance level: 0 / 5

What a fun but intricately told story!

I really enjoyed this book overall, and I can’t wait for this author’s future work.

The chapters jump back and forth between both timelines and perspectives, so you do need to pay attention to the details (especially in the beginning) - this is not a book you can fully turn your brain off during, if that makes sense. Beyond that complexity, though, the writing is super easy to follow (feels like Upper YA/New Adult) and never lingers in one place for too long.

I appreciated the even pace throughout most of the book; it’s a really nice mix of both a plot- and character-driven approach. However, I did feel the twists and turns went on for a bit longer than they should have.

I generally felt the characters were well-developed and believable, although I wish we got a deeper, slightly more complex look at Davis in the later years.

I absolutely loved that all the MCs were Asian - and there was also some LGBTQ+ rep. The author incorporated some Chinese mythology into our everyday world which I also loved! I also thought the magical stones concept was super fun - I’d love to see some more of the other types in action for future books.

Overall, a super enjoyable read!

This was such a refreshing read! Chinese mythology, a unique magic system, and fantasy with a mystery element?! This story was incredible as was the author’s writing. It sets up book two perfectly and I can’t wait for it but I am so happy with book one. What an amazing read!!

Adding in, I did the last 20ish % in audio format and Natalie Naudus knocked this out of the park. This book would be phenomenal in either format!

The multigenerational mystery

"Of Mountains and Seas" delves into themes of family, acceptance, and sacrifice. The protagonist, Davis, is born without magic in a family of shapeshifters, making him an outcast seeking his father's approval. His journey intertwines with Iris, a girl battling a mysterious illness, as they navigate a world filled with Chinese mythology and a unique magic system.

I personally love multigenerational mysteries, so I really enjoyed this story told through converging timelines and multiple points of view. The lush world-building immersed me in a world of adventure and political intrigue, keeping me engaged from start to finish.

The story explores the lengths people will go to for survival and acceptance. The characters' lives intertwine in unexpected ways, driving the plot forward. The exploration of societal pressure and personal sacrifice is done with a sharp, unflinching eye, adding a layer of complexity to the story.

"Of Mountains and Seas" is a compelling read that will appeal to fans of fantasy and mysteries.

Big mahalo for allowing me to be an ARC reader, Emily!

A shimmering blend of magical realism, intricate storytelling, and a reminder that humanity is as messy as it is resilient. This book swept me up with its vivid prose and nonlinear narrative, weaving timelines and characters together in a way that felt like piecing together a beautiful, chaotic puzzle. It’s the kind of story that makes you sit back and marvel at how it all fits together—eventually.

The writing? Chef’s kiss. Emily’s world-building is lush and immersive, and every word feels intentional. The story tackles the lengths people will go to for survival and acceptance, exploring themes of societal pressure and personal sacrifice with a sharp, unflinching eye. The way the characters’ lives intertwined kept me flipping pages, desperate to see how it all unraveled.

That said, while the story itself hooked me, I didn’t feel as connected to the characters as I hoped. They were fascinating, yes, but not the kind you want to grab coffee with or cry over when they’re gone. Still, the plot’s complexity and the sheer uniqueness of the storytelling more than made up for it.

Rating: 4.5 stars. If you love intricate, thought-provoking narratives and aren’t afraid to dive into a story that bends time and reality, Of Mountains and Seas deserves a spot on your TBR.

DNF at 31%

I am disappointed to be DNFing this book but we are not pushing through mediocre books in 2025.

I would like to preface this review by emphasising that a) my opinions are based on the first third of the book, things may or may not have improved in the latter thirds, and b) this is a YA fantasy and I am an adult.

Now, my decision to DNF does not mean, by any means, that this is a terrible book. I just didn't personally gel with the storytelling, didn't feel hooked or enamoured by the story, therefore, didn't feel any urge to continue.

Unfortunately, everything about this book felt underdeveloped - from the world building and magic system to the characters. This book follows several timelines, ranging from 1932 to 2000, with several character POVs within those timelines (I have a count of 5 POVs in the first 30%). I found these POVs to be indistinguishable - there was little to no world building or descriptions to distinguish the time settings, whilst the characters felt flat and samey. The single audiobook narrator did not help either as all POVs sounded the same. If it wasn't for the name and date heading every chapter, I would have been lost.

I wish the synopsis had been clearer about the multiple POVs and time settings to better convey what this book was about. I prefer a historical setting in fantasy and wrongly assumed (my bad) that because this is based on mythology that it would have a historical setting (and no, the 1900s do not make the cut).

However, you may enjoy this book if you are looking for a YA fantasy based on Chinese mythology that has multiple POVs and no romantic plot (as far as I know).

Thank you to NetGalley and Hawk Ridge Press for the opportunity to review this book.

Of Mountains and Seas transports readers to a richly imagined, alternate California where society is split between two species: statics and shifters. The shifters take on wildly unique and creative forms.

Davis, a static, has been judged harshly since childhood, most painfully by his own father, and spends his life striving for approval. Iris, raised in a hardworking Asian family, faces a different conflict: should she honor her parents’ expectations, or follow a mysterious and magical path calling her toward the unknown?

This is not a light or quick read. The narrative is complex, with multiple timelines, shifting points of view, and intricate layers of political maneuvering. It can take time to fully immerse yourself in the world, but the reward is a rich, multifaceted story that grows more compelling the deeper you go. The balance of power between shifters and statics is filled with intrigue, betrayal, and alliances shaping the world. At the heart of it all are hidden magical stones, objects of immense power, that the main characters must seek out to change their destinies.

This isn’t your usual romance-driven fantasy, it is a layered, timeless tale that blends mythology, cultural depth, and intricate world-building into a unique reading experience.

Of Mountains And Seas was a very unique book. The weaving PoVs that happen during different times was interesting and I really liked how everything wove together throughout the book and came to this head at the end. The world building was fabulous. The author also did an amazing job of writing complex characters with complex relationships.

What a fantastic debut novel! I have not read many books in a nonlinear format between several characters such as this, but it was written well enough that it did not leave room for confusion. I loved how the story progressed and how it all tied together.

I also adored the ending! It built up and had a few twists that made me super excited for the sequel! I’ll definitely be picking up the next one!

Thank you so much for allowing me to be an ARC reader Emily!

Society is divided between shifters and statics. Shifters have powers, and in some cases, multiple powers, while statics are powerless. Davis is born into a powerful shifter family, but unlike his beautiful younger sister, he is powerless. Driven in his quest to obtain power and become a shifter, he meets Iris, a young girl suffering from a mysterious illness, who is searching for increasing autonomy from her overprotective parents. Meanwhile, Nivi, a young woman raised by her elderly grandmother in Yuras, California, has no idea that her life is intricately linked to both Davis and Iris. After a surprising discovery revealing carefully hidden truths, the very halls of shifter government are shaken. But Davis has become obsessed in his quest for power. How far is he willing to go to protect was he has, and perhaps take even more?

Of Mountains and Seas is a multi-POV, multiple timeline story that follows a dynamic cast of characters through an interconnected storyline spanning decades. Beautifully written, this book explores complicated familial relationships, particularly between parents and children. I absolutely LOVED this book and couldn’t put it down! With elements of fantasy, mythology, magic, and mystery, this book offers something for everyone. The author did a seamless job of blending the various viewpoints and timelines, creating an incredibly complex story that, while nuanced, also felt accessible and engaging. It’s hard to believe that this is the author’s debut novel. I’m already looking forward to the second half of this duology!

“Of Mountains and Seas,” by Emily Renk Hawthorne

This was my second read thru of this story but audiobook version this time. I initially rated it 3 stars, but now it's 4 stars. I stand by what I originally said that this book is good for people who love to annotate because it was confusing with time jumps and the amount of POVs. It made way more sense the second time thru and I picked up way more information than the first time. I really liked the story plot, and the mystery mixed in with modern type political intrigue. I love the cultural differences with the Chinese lore. Of Mountains and Seas was plot and character focused and not a lot of romance for readers who want that. Tons of character development, whether good or bad, which I really liked.

The narration was perfect. It helped make more sense to the story and brought the entire book to life in my mind. I preferred listening to the book versus the e-book, it really made it magical for me.

The cover is initially why I wanted to read the book; it is so pretty. 4 out of 5 stars.

-Political Intrigue

I adored this book. It took me a little while to get used to the non-linear format of the book but it was very well written. It kept me interested and curious about how all the characters were going to be related. This was a truly beautiful story about a shifter community hidden from the normal world, its politics and policies and how it affects the shifters and statics(the non-shifters) alike. You are given a little more information chapter by chapter, very cleverly written in a way that the revelations never feel like you are being told these things but left for you to figure it out yourself. Please tell me there will be a second one!

Of Mountains and Seas is the refreshing debut book and first book in the Of Mountains and Seas a YA series by Emily Renk Hawthorne and it is a great start to her writing career.

This lovely tale effortlessly merges mythology, magical realism, urban fantasy and fantasy together making it a captivating read to remember. With drama, action, magic, mystery, paranormal elements, and adventure there is something for YA to adults to enjoy. Emily intricately weaves together various timelines and perspectives of the lives of several characters and intertwines them together.

This complex multilayered story revolves around a young man who is an outcast all because he was born without magic in a family of shapeshifters and a young woman who has a mysterious illness. Together they face societal pressures, politics, familial constructs, acceptance, betrayal, survival and sacrifice.

Well done, Emily.

For a debut novel, that cover is one of the most stunning ones I've ever seen (it's even prettier in person, if you can believe that)

I enjoyed the way Chinese Mythology and folklore were used for the plot; it really was new territory for me and I absolutely adored the cultural rep in the book. The author did a great job combining it with elements of magic, fantasy, and powers - especially the unique creatures that could be shapeshifted into. I can see how the story left a few ends open, setting up a good stage for a sequel. Some of the characters had more depth than the others, but nonetheless all of them felt quite real - flawed but human.

My biggest gripe with the book was probably the sheer number of POV used in the story. Utilizing four different timelines and four different characters' perspective, it took me quite a while to get the hang of the constantly switching plot line. Of course, ultimately, they all were shown to be connected by a few common threads but getting there was definitely a bit cumbersome (not to mention, it made it quite difficult for any proper character development to happen in the book).
The ending wrapped up a tad too quickly for my taste, despite it being something the reader knew would eventually happen. I would have liked a bit more conflict, fights, and the like (esp given the quick reveal at the end) but it all happened so fast that I didn't get the chance to fully immerse myself in the grandeur of it.

Overall though, I am curious how the second part of this series builds on the established story line, and what new powers/mythological beings are revealed in the process. Recommended for perhaps folks who enjoy their fantasy with a good mix of mythology, and focused on YA characters!

Thank you to the author and R&R Book Tours for the gorgeous gifted copy!

This was an incredible debut novel!
Of Mountains and Seas is a multi-timeline, multi-POV story that plays on Chinese mythology in a more modern setting. You follow four main characters- Davis, Iris, Ling, and Nivi throughout timelines until pieces of the puzzle fall into place.

I love a good multi-timeline story and this definitely delivered! I do think towards the beginning of the book as an *audiobook listener*, I found it a bit hard to keep track of timelines and was unable to flip back and forth in the book to keep it all straight. By the end, this was no longer a problem.

I loved the book and am excited to read book 2!

DNF @ 13%

I am not starring this book, because my opinion is so strongly my opinion that it isn't fair to star this. I would just remove the book instead of reviewing it for netgalley normally as I don't think I experienced the book enough to get an opinion, but I have feedback on why this book didn't work for me.

The blurb of this book did not do a good job conveying what it's about. That plot is still there, and I see the sprinkling of it, but in the first 13%, I saw Davis twice and Iris once. This was over six chapters + prologue. This means that we got the PoV of the two named MCs from the blurb less than half the time.

This is not a horrible thing, because the way this book works, it's very jumpy. Intentionally, not badly. It follows multiple characters from different timelines as it all comes together to form the narrative. This is a narrative type that I just do not click with. It requires a specific type of patience and attention to small details to realize how the narrative pieces tie together, and you don't even get that tie together until later on.

These types of books are hard to pull off, and I give Hawthorne all the credit for that. But the blurb and advertisement needs to convey this better, because I wouldn't have picked it up. These types of books are not for me, and I know they're not for everyone, so others will go in unaware of the type of book this is.

If you like these types of narratives and the plot sounds interesting, please, try it. But if you don't like those sort of narratives, just know that this book features it, because man, the blurb does NOTHING to indicate it xP

*No REAL spoilers… just a hint at the end that *may* spoil it for some*

Ok… Honestly? 4.5⭐️. It was so close to a five star read, but I’m not sure what it is that’s keeping me from making it one.

This is a beautiful story. Definitely one I could see on film. I think maybe the thing keeping me from making it a 5⭐️ read is that there’s a lot of characters to keep track of, and a lot of bouncing around through time from the 1930’s, to the year 2000. I think it made it hard for me to remember which characters were which when I had to keep changing their clothing in my mind to fit the era.

But in the end, I was surprised to see who the actual bad-guy was. The description of the book certainly did not prepare me for that one.

All in all, a good read. Definitely recommend.

I really enjoyed this book over all, the writing was good, the characters were many and varied and it left room for sequel without leaving you on a total cliffhanger. My only qualm was that it bounced backed and forth between the past and present with every character. I read this in Kindle so it was harder to look back and forth to keep myself from getting confused than it probably would be with a physical book. I’m not complaining about the style format because it built suspense with all the converging storylines but my brand of ADHD was not enjoying it. It’s a me thing, i like things linear. Overall a really went written book, no major plot holes, no spice, just good fantasy/mystery/thriller? Honestly not sure how to categorize it.

Chinese mythology, fantasy, paranormal, evil versus good, lies and deceit and manipulation.

The magical being’s abilities within this story are varied. They can shift into mythological creatures and the descriptions and imagery are just incredible.

This is one you really need to concentrate on, because not only is it told from several point of views, it's also told from different timelines which jump around but it all comes together at the end, so trust me, stick with it.

It's a really interesting, beautiful urban fantasy that touches on moral obligations and dark themes, balancing yin and yang, mystery and suspense.

I was sent this book by the author and all opinions are my own.

This hardback is the most beautiful book I have ever seen! The dust cover, the hardback cover, the end papers, the map and the epic edges will have pride of place on my shelves.

The story is told in multiple POV and along different time lines but eventually all converge together at the perfect time to bring together all the stories and POV where you can go ‘ohhhhhhhhhh’
Iam not going to lie I did struggle a little with this but I always do with fantasy books tbh that have multiple POV over multiple timelines but it didn’t put me off and I did get the hang of it quicker than other books Iv read.

All Davis has ever wanted was his father’s approval, he ends up going to some seriously dangerous lengths only to find out some devastating news.
Iris a young girl when we first meet her, has a mysterious illness that hinders her life and constantly takes medication that is meant to be saving her life?
Nivi has always thought her grandmother was hiding or keeping things from her but little does she know the whole truth will completely change the world as she sees it.

This story was so immersive and creative, the world of shape shifters and statics, intertwined with heavy political intrigue and unrest boasts a story so intriguing.

There are so many elements to this story that meant it kept me reading with huge intrigue its full of mystery, Chinese mythology, magical shape shifters, family generational legacies and turmoil all come crashing together into a phenomenal debut book by Emily Renk Hawthorne.
I love that there was no real romance element to the book as so many fantasy book do and while I enjoy a good romantasy it was refreshing. Potentially because it’s a YA maybe? Which is brilliant as I can hand it down to my young teen to read knowing it’s clean.

I really enjoyed this light fantasy read steeped in Chinese history with an air of mystery and politics! And that ending has surely set this up for another book? If it has I am all in for book 2 🙌

Firstly, this is one of the most gorgeous books on my shelves now. That COVER, those edges and endpages!! Do yourself a favor and grab the special edition.

This reminds me a tiny bit of Jade War in its incredibly complex family dynamics and expansive world-building layered with folklore. This is one of those books that takes big swings; one of those that feels so expansive despite having a relatively limited number of pages. The story weaves together multiple timelines and perspectives, drawing heavily on Chinese mythology while mixing in shapeshifters, magical stones, and political intrigue. I wouldn't even really categorize it as young adult; it’s a layered, ambitious exploration of family, power, and generational trauma.

The folklore is so rich and immersive, and the way it was threaded into the story made everything feel expansive and grounded in our reality despite the magic and creatures contained within. The characters, too, are realistically flawed and complex. Their choices make sense, even when they are harmful.

I’ll admit the nonlinear timeline was a little confusing at times, but I deeply admired how high this book aimed. Honestly? I’d rather read something that shoots for the stars than something that plays it safe. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for fantasy that’s unique, deeply immersive, and unafraid to be bold.
