Zara Lorna is kind of a big deal. After winning Artist of the Year (again), having a public argument with her boyfriend (again), and being whisked away by a man she barely knows (that’s new), it feels like she can’t go anywhere without drawing attention. It’s taking a toll on her and she could use a break.

Deciding to spend some time out of the public eye, she moves to Chicago to be close to Nikki. Hoping that being around her creative friend will cure her blues.

Asa Young was a rock star (almost). His dreams of traveling the world with his band came true (almost). These days, he’s content making commercial jingles at XY Records and staying as far away from the limelight as he can (that’s new). And he definitely doesn’t write music anymore.

Which means he should definitely stay away from Zara, no matter how much fun they have and how easy their connection. Being around her attracts too much unwanted attention.
Except that being around her is all he wants to do.
She reignites a flame inside Asa he thought had died long ago. And he is everything her heart has been looking for.
Is the connection they share strong enough to make them more than friends?
Or are there too many obstacles to make it work?

‘Write or Wrong’ is a full-length contemporary romance and can be read as a standalone. Book #9 in the Common Threads series, Seduction in the City World, Penny Reid Book Universe.

Heidi Hutchinson writes slow burn rock star romances for contemporary readers who like humor with their hotties. She has both open and closed door series filled with relatable characters and swooney yumminess. Double Blind Study, her go-to series, is closed door and follows a band in emotional turmoil and the women who love them.

When she’s not writing about wild hearted women and hunky heroes, she’s watching Doctor Who or trying to find the perfect gluten free pizza crust for her pizza shaped celiac heart. She lives in the Black Hills with her alarmingly handsome husband, their fearless child, and a rather large (and spoiled) dog.

She’s fueled by messages from her readers and too much coffee.
And a whole lotta love.

THE DOUBLE BLIND STUDY SERIES is an exciting romance series about rock stars in recovery. The Double Blind Study band has already lived the rock and roll cliché. This is life after. Full of humor, heart, and slow burn romance. Each book can be read alone but it is best if read in order. Cliffhanger free.

THE IN BETWEEN DUET SERIES is a slow burn unconventional romance that explores the connections of science and poetry. Occasionally intense moments of personal clarity and heartfelt confessions. Filled with touches of humor and real world obstacles. Cliffhanger free.

IN COLD MUD SERIES is a small series revolving around the politics and relationships of horse racing. Not a romance series. Definitely family drama.

NOTE: All of Heidi Hutchinson’s books take place in the Double Blind Study series. Each series can be read on their own but there are often crossover characters you may recognize.

I first read this author through the SmartyPants Romance books. And so I was thrilled to have another one from her to read this time around. It was fun to be in the music world again. While Zara somewhat reminded me of Taylor Swift, it was of her in her younger days for sure. And then of course there was Asa, who was an older former rock star, or very short-lived career rock star. Both of them had dealt with people in their past that they should have been able to depend on that had been bad for them, back-stabbing and causing all kinds of issues. While it had made Asa back away from the whole business and become quiet and kind of broody, Zara was kind of the opposite as she was more of a sunshine and always looking at the good for the most part. Willing to forgive and also give another chance, looking for the good in everyone.

But boy did some of the people in her life, her ex-boyfriend for example, he was horrible. And the way his PR twisted things to make it look like she was the cheater and the one breaking them up. Not to mention Asa’s sister and mother. However they also had some really good people and friends in their lives. Her family was so great, his father. The friends they had in common or some of their other industry contacts. Of course she also had such great security, from the Cipher security connections that we even got to spend some brief time at the end with some of our favorite Knitting in the City series characters, Alex, Dan, and Quinn.

Their relationship took its time, and the author wrote it perfectly. Honestly there wasn’t a third act breakup, even with a bit of a misunderstanding. Zara’s way to deal with it and how she worked around it was realistic in my opinion and only made the story end perfectly. Another great story from this author in a series that I love!

Let it be known that I received an advanced reader copy of this book. Now that the formality is out of the way….I LOVED this book. I loved the characters, I loved the hilarious one line quips (powdered donuts 😂😂). I didn’t want it to end. I wanted Zara and Asa’s story to keep going and going. I hope to see them again in a future book of Heidi’s. The whole book just felt like a giant hug and I will be reading this one again.

LOVED, LOVED, LOVED THIS!!

Let me start out by saying, I will read anything Heidi writes. Ms. Hutchinson has done it again with this beautifully written romance with amazing characters that I want to be best friends with.

Boy crush on Asa? Yes.
Girl crush on Zara? Also yes.

Not only does this author create lovable, romantic, protective heroes with all the smarts and hearts of gold, but she also gives us strong, badass heroines who you can’t help but fall hard for. Zara and Asa are perfect examples.

The chemistry between Zara & Asa was immediate and that spark was bright and beautiful. That connection in the beginning was strong - it pretty much sizzled - and to see it only grow bigger and more powerful as I turned the pages was a wonderful thing and put all the hearts in my eyes.

Ms. Hutchinson’s words have a way of pulling me in and keeping me there. I’m always lost in her beautifully written words and I never want to leave the story.

If you’ve read and loved other books by this author, you’ll want to read this one too.

This book… Beautiful writing…strong and lovable (SO DANG LOVABLE!) and well-developed characters…and a story that brought allllllll the feels. It’s pure romance perfection really.

Once again, an absolutely delightful book by Heidi Hutchinson! Asa and Zara are such wonderful characters that are so easy to love. My favorite part is how they got to know each other and began to deeply understand each other. Their acceptance of each other and how they connected was very honest and enchanting.

I received an ARC in exchange for a honest review.

Write or Wrong
XY Records Book 4

Disclosure: I received an ARC, but I would have read it anyway, because I can’t get enough of these books :)

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Sweetness: 🍭🍭🍭🍭

Perfect for fans of: Double Blind Study books, XYRecords books, Taylor Swift and any of the main pop girlies, indie bands, music writing/production videos a la TS/Jack Antonoff’s Getaway Car video, tortured poets, 5SOS fans and Louies

FMC: Zara is That girl. Think an amalgamation of Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, and Sabrina Carpenter. Wildly talented and down to earth, and so aware of everything that her fame brings, including the responsibilities to her family, fans, and team

MMC: If you loved Mike and Harrison from Heidi’s DBS books, were devastated when Taylor Hawkins passed, or have ever wanted to smack your best friend’s awful ex/boyfriend and tell her she deserves better, or just love a tattooed anxious man with a heart of gold, you will LOVE Asa the secret cinnamon roll.

Plot: After a highly public post-awards show break-up, Zara is whisked off in a getaway car by her co-producer and publicity-phobe Asa for a night of hiding and truth sharing. When the tabloids spin their tales, Zara decides to lie low amongst friends in Chicago. Will the frenzy die down or find her? And will their shared love of music bring Zara and Asa together, or will Asa’s avoidance of the industry and the dark side of fame come between them?

Review: Heidi Hutchinson did it again! I LOVED this. To the point where I inhaled it in a day during a busy period of work. I was reading every available second. I loved these two together. They’re just so cute, and the way they connect through music as if it’s a language of its own is beautiful. Also, we love a MMC who knows what a privilege it is to be with the FMC and vis versa. Zara’s relationships with her family and her bodyguards and team were the cutest, and we got a few cameos from our XY Records faves. Overall a great addition to the series that left me eager for another installment and wanting to binge read all of the DBS books again.

OH MY DAYS!! I did NOT want to put this down, but ya know life kind of interrupted a bit of my ability to do so. Every time I read a book of Heidi’s it’s like I forgot the previous one existed and begin down the incredible love she describes so well. This whole universe she created is incredibly endearing. I’m always stunned of the ease in which these characters become real in my mind. It takes a special kind of talent to build characters and a believable story to continue to read after each one is released.

Asa Young is known for his stoic but loyal qualities. His ability to make a jingle and work quietly in the background at the XY Records is noticed by those he loves. He’s kind of equal parts grumpy old man and hot former rocker. I really love him as a frequented character from the previous Common Threads books. Also, it seems he’s kind of given up on any aspirations. He is rather content with just living life in the background.

Zara Lorna is incredibly talented and gives me the Selena Gomez vibe. There is a sweetness about her and talent that people either want to exploit or just be in her orbit. I honestly was so distracted by Asa’s character that I didn’t seem to think of how she is in the story until just now. Mind you I love how she is…she’s lyrical and methodical. Her creativity definitely is evident, but it’s weird to think she just kind of exists and makes complete sense to me.

Asa is perfectly content to forget her ever met Zara. Zara on the other hand can’t help but slowly melt away the iceberg that is Asa’s heart. Imagine being texted continually by a 10 and ignoring it….yeah exactly…not sure I would have been able to keep from responding. I don’t want to give away too much but this is worth the read. It’s slow and delicious. Every time I read one in the Common Threads I think of it as my new favorite. But this one is definitely that. Read read read Write and Wrong as soon as you can. I promise it’s sooo worth the read.

I freaking loved Write or Wrong by Heidi Hutchinson. Pop star Zara Lorna is a celebrated artist and the tiring side of stardom has begun to wear on her. Band drama led to the demise of Asa Young’s rock star life before it truly began. An awards show setup brought the two together, but the awkward two-person after-party solidified a soul-searing, genuine friendship they never saw coming. Another twist of fate reunited these two guarded and passionate musicians; as roommates, their magnetism was unavoidable. Asa Young and Zara Lorna were unique, relatable and so stinking cute together! Their friendship and deep connection were endearing. Their gradual-burn romance turned my heart to mush. Heidi’s lyrical storytelling was enchanting and her gritty, authentic characters are everything. From start to finish, I was in it for the music, the drama, and the delicious spice.

I finished the last ten chapters with the audiobook, which was fantastic! Nick Mondelli and Ava Lucas did an amazing job bringing Heidi’s wonderful rock star romance off the page; they captured every bit of clever banter, angst, humor, and heart of the two heart-melting MCs and all of Heidi’s well-rounded characters. If you’re looking for a fabulous close proximity rock star romance with cozy vibes, grab Write or Wrong now!

3.4 stars.

Look, I actually enjoyed this author's writing a lot. But, I hate how she wrote both main characters.

Zara comes off as eager to please and Asa came off as a coward.

There is a LOT of inner monologue which was pretty great in how it painted Asa. He's thoughtful and considerate (in his head). He's pretty woke (in his head). And we hear all the reasons why he acts the way he acts.

But Zara doesn't get any of that so she's chasing this guy down and wanting to be his friend and wondering why he seems to hate her.

I hated that she chased him and that he would think all the things and not say them.

I was frustrated. I probably will read more by this author, but I don't believe in their relationship.

Asa's betrayal near the end (not cheating... but taking away Zara's agency) infuriated me. And Zara learns why he does it and that it's all okay but those revelations don't come from Asa actually communicating with her. Argh.

Write or Wrong is a beautifully crafted, emotionally resonant slow-burn romance that explores the complexities of love, fame, and creativity. Zara and Asa’s journey from friends to lovers is a heartfelt one, filled with moments of vulnerability, artistic connection, and quiet intimacy.
For fans of the friends-to-lovers trope and those who enjoy a thoughtful, character-driven romance, this book will hit all the right notes.

Oh my goodness, I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the XY Records books in the larger Common Threads series. The company is a messy (in a good way) tangle of found family and I LOVE THAT.

Frankly, Asa is a mess (not necessarily in a good way) when we first meet him. He's shoved his wants down after a rough betrayal that left him adrift. He's existing, but not really living. Helping Zara the night of an awards ceremony wasn't even something he needed to think twice about because it burned him how no one else was stepping in. So he did. And he found this amazing woman who he had a fantastic connection to, but all his self-doubt (among other things - like thinking he doesn't deserve anything good) has him pulling away and doubling down on being alone.

On Zara's end, she saw something amazing in Asa, but she wasn't about to force him into anything when he she could see what a strain it put on him. Even when the stars align and they end up becoming roommates (of sorts), she treads lightly around him because she doesn't want to scare him off. It takes some long nights of shared music, a couple of steamy kisses, and the reality of being a public figure with rabid fans before they get where they need to be.

Frankly, I adored Asa and Zara together. His heart had been bruised and he'd practically shut down, but Zara's sweetness and talent slowly, but surely got through to him. He understood the reality of being with someone with Zara's fame and I DON'T KNOW BUT I REALLY LOVED THEM TOGETHER. *thumbs up* all around.

I was so excited to return to the world that Ms. Hutchinson created in the Smartypants world!

The world of music, the world of celebrity, and the world where magic happens at XY studios! The way that Ms. Hutchinson brings her readers into this world is like going behind the curtain, beyond the red velvet rope, is realistic and full of swoons, and I am here for it!

This is the story of Asa and Zara and what a chemistry they had indeed!

A friend-to-lover romance is my favorite, and this one is gotta be one of the best.

I love the fact that Asa has an understanding of the world in which Zara has to live in. I also fell hard for him when he knew what he had to do and was willing to make the sacrifices needed to be the central, safe spot in her chaotic world.

Zara is a dynamo, a musical legend, but when it comes to some real-world feelings and relationships, she is just as vulnerable and fragile as the rest of us.

I loved seeing past characters make their voices heard and helped Zara and Asa in their budding relationship!

This is definitely a re-read in the future, and I will have to go back and read the other books in this series!

Heidi wrote a knock out meant specifically for my heart in Write or Wrong! It was perfect!

Asa was a young artist jaded by fame and the drama his bandmate and sister caused repeatedly. But when he does his best friend a favor and takes a young and more than upcoming songwriter/singer Zara Lorna to the music awards, his life is changed forever. Zara gets yelled at by her long time boyfriend and Asa steps in and takes her away.

In that night he hid her away from her ex, they created a bond and shared their whole hearts with each other. Slowly, over time, Zara melts the ice surrounding Asa’s heart. And in return, he gives her some place safe to just be. It’s beautiful, emotional, and heart wrenching as they heal and fall in love. Again, it was perfect.

Heidi has admitted to not liking Asa at first, but I felt him from the start. He could not have been written better. He needed to be freed from his anxiety so he could live again. Zara showed him how. I loved this story!

SPR has so many amazing books and the Common Threads Series is fantastic! I love being introduced to new characters but also love the cameos from characters we know and love - Dan, Quinn and Alex!!

Zara is currently telling hiding - or trying to be - due to an ugly episode with her ex boyfriend (she was right to lash out!). She is so talented but just want to stay out of the spotlight. She’s in a. Bit of a rut but Asa helps her find her voice/writing again.

Asa is a character you can’t help to fall in love with. He has a lot of baggage, wants to stay out of the spotlight but is so incredibly talented.

The budding romance between these two is so beautiful and I love how Heidi ties it to music. Both amazing musician bring their feelings, thoughts and talent together to make the most beautiful music! Fantastic read!

I was so excited when I learned there would be another book in the world of XY Records and Common Threads series.

This slow burn was so, so satisfying. It is
refreshing to read a rock star romance where both characters are such great people. And I love how the author brings us into the creative process of songwriting and studio work. She really captures the joy of creating music.

I loved the mental health rep in this work...having a character dealing with panic attacks and anxiety, the subject was handled with grace and accuracy.

But the biggest treat in this book is the way these two characters love each other. I'm still smiling.

I received an unexpected ARC of this book and am tickled to have read it early and have liked it so much!

The Queen of Feels strikes again!

Heidi Hutchinson has a knack for hitting me smack-dab in ALL the feels.
Every.
Single.
Time.

From the very first page to the final HEA, Write or Wrong took me on an emotional roller coaster, running the gamut from anxious nailbiting to sniggering, to crying, to swooning, to laughing, to happy-sighing, and yes, tthere may have been a couple more tears along the way.

I adored Zara and kept rooting for Asa, even - and especially - when he was being extra Asa-ish, and seeing these two connect and fall in love was just beautiful. *chef’s kiss*

Visiting with XY Records family is always a treat, and I’m happy to see this family growing with every book. More, please?

Write or Wrong is such a wonderful book!

Heidi Hutchinson does not disappoint with her latest novel in the Common Threads series.  Steamy romance, drama, fleshed out backstories, interesting, relatable characters (even though one's a mega popstar) and some real life issues that can get in the way of love. Fear of abandonment, ghosting, toxic family, shutting down and shutting off, pressures of being in the spotlight...Asa and Zara navigate it all on their quest for happily ever after.

Deep, introspective, steamy and smart, this "all the feels" well written story had me "ooo"ing and "ah"ing in a book hangover fog for days!

Couple Goals

I think I fell in love with Asa before Zara did. From the first chapter panic attack to the way he supported her without fail, Asa proved to be the perfect golden retriever boyfriend. I was charmed by his quirks and the way he his brain worked through things. Similarly, I cracked up during both their internal monologues following an unfortunate remodeling event. I’m still not sure if Asa and Zara are a case of opposites attract or two peas in a pod, but the banter back and forth was top notch. I loved the cameos the author included from previous book heroes and heroines and am excited to check out some of the related worlds I haven’t yet.

The Romance Read I didn't Know I Wanted

I've loved the other books Heidi has written for the Common Threads series and enjoyed them, but I loved.this book. Zara and Asa just blended together beautifully as their relationship grew throughout the story. I really enjoyed that despite Zara being a world famous musician, she came off as this down to earth character who just wants to be loved for themselves and Asa is navigating finding himself again. Definitely will be reading more of Heidi's books.

Asa and Zara are so swoon worthy in this book, which is book nine in the Common Threads Smartypants Romance series. I really enjoyed each character on their own as well as together. This author just has a way of making me fall in love with her characters as individuals and as a couple and she is a favorite of mine when it comes to the intimate scenes she writes. It was also super fun to revisit XY records and my favorite stars from previous Heidi SPR books.

I love love love Zara and Asa's story. Zara is so so cute. She had to grow up fast in some ways, aka professionally, but personally she is just inexperienced and too many people have taken advantage. Asa might have left the industry with good reasons, and he is an amazing down to earth mam, with baggage just like her.
These two..my gosh, the slow burn killed me lol, but it fits perfectly with who they are and the journey they are on as both have trust issues. The end just made me so so happy. I truly couldn't have asked for more for these two beautiful humans!

Been quite awhile since I read any of this series, I really enjoyed this one.
Asa who we met in previous books dropped out of the music business as it was too hard on his life when his band imploded and friend Nikki (book 8 All Mixed Up) got hurt. He is conned by Nikki to go to awards show to pick up her award and end up rescuing Zara Lorna a 23 yr old famous singer who is being screamed at by her boyfriend in front of everyone.
She is just a sweet happy person, who wants to make music but is tied to the bullshit the boyfriend brings with his lies, cheating and narcissism. He always has to be the center of attention even though his talent is a fraction of hers. They met as struggling 16 yr olds and Zara is loyal to a fault. Finally she has had enough and starts to wake up and rid her life of the users.
Asa a broken soul, falls for her hard even though he tries his best to avoid her. They have mutual friends and he runs into her months later. She is a great character with lots of heart and empathy. Well written with music, romance and a stalker.
