Meet your inner critic, your inner teen, and your inner shadow in this engaging guide to taming anxiety, healing trauma, and overcoming self-doubt with Parts Work
What is “Parts Work”?
You contain multitudes. At any given moment, your inner critic might be questioning whether you’re an imposter, and your inner child might be yearning for compassion and self-care. These parts don’t make you broken—they make you human. Parts Work allows you an all-access pass to wholeness by understanding, befriending, and leading the multiple voices within yourself.
In this eye-opening and practical guide, psychotherapist Britt Frank introduces you to your from impulsive inner parts and shadowy hidden parts to your inner child and more. You’ll learn to listen to the conversations inside yourself and identify the core needs behind your habits and behaviors. Using tools and exercises ranging from self-dialogue to embodiment techniques and more, you’ll discover new ways to nurture and harmonize these inner voices—even when you feel overwhelmed and low in motivation.
Grounded in the latest research on Parts Work and Internal Family Systems, and offering proven techniques from Frank’s clinical practice and personal challenges, this engaging guide is a user manual to your own mind—and presents a road map for finding peace, confidence, and a deeper understanding of who you truly are.
"Fiction: Your personality is fixed Fact: Your personality can change"
I appreciate how Britt gives examples that make it easy to understand what she's trying to share/convey. An example, she says, "Think of your parts like a cast of characters- each character has a unique set of likes, dislikes, inclinations, and traits." To which she brings up Pixar's Inside Out, where Riley needed all of her parts and all their personalities (sad, disgusted, hot-headed, and anxious). The brain (physical) and the mind (intangible) are two separate things and defining "personality" is problematic. "Personality comes from the Latin word persona- a theatrical mask worn by performers to hide their identities" Not to be confused with Multiple Personality Disorder, which is now called Disassociative Identity Disorder (DID), are two very different things.
I would say this is part memoir, part self-help, and "user-friendly" for anyone looking to do their "parts work" in a fun and engaging way. She debunks myths, adds useful quotes from a variety of sources, and encourages you to be open to not changing your way of thinking, but to "align your mind," sort of like a car needs its parts to be aligned.
Genuinely one of the most helpful and insightful books I’ve read! Britt Frank explores shadow work, parts work, and Internal Family Systems in a way that makes the topics both accessible and thought-provoking, and approaches them with an attitude of kindness and curiosity. Seriously, I’ve tried to learn about some of these ideas before and have struggled, but something about this book just clicked with me! It demystifies the human brain and the relationships between one’s psychological parts and physiological parts, all while offering methods to help strengthen the individual sense of Self and all one contains. I found this whole guide to be immensely useful. 5 stars plus a big heart to Frank! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🩷
Align Your Mind by Britt Frank is a compassionate and eye-opening guide that reframes our inner struggles as opportunities for growth. With clarity and humor, Frank explores “parts work,” a method that helps us understand the many internal voices we all have, not as flaws, but as protective allies. This book offers practical tools, relatable stories, and empowering insights that make it easy to stop fighting ourselves and start leading our lives with greater clarity and confidence. A must-read for anyone feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply ready to better understand their mind and create a better life.
This book is a very well written, accessible and deeply relatable introduction to internal family systems and parts work. Britt’s writing comes across incredibly compassionate and makes a ‘can-be’ dry read into a journey of meaningful self-connection. The exercises at the end of each chapter are very practical and offer options to suit multiple needs.
Highly recommend for anyone ready and looking for deeper self-understanding and inner peace.
This is the best book I’ve read on internal family systems; it’s readable, easy to understand with practical advice backed by solid brain science. And I’m not particularly keen on IFS in general- too many “moving parts” 😉 it got a bit much to take in with all the lists and acronyms but she presents it in a very clever way & I appreciate her contribution to mental health & self-help.
Treasure trove, tons of information and practical steps to align your mind. The book is based on the concept parts work, meaning the mind is not one it is multiple parts, like multiple personalities. I bought my own copy of this book, planning to re read and practice.
