Slaying You is the sequel to Killing Me, which was one of the most entertaining books I’ve read, so anticipation was high for the second book featuring Amber and her serial-killer killing friend Grace. Both woman find themselves back in Las Vegas for the wedding of their friend, and quickly become enmeshed in a hunt for an escaped killer with ties to Grace. The old crew reunites, along with some new characters, and they all pick up where they left off without missing a beat. The first half of the book moves a little slow, but there’s still that welcome banter between the girls until the plot picks up steam. That first book was a tough act to follow, and the plot here isn’t as interesting, but this is still a fun read with hilarious characters and dialogue. Although it can be read a standalone, I highly recommend you read the first book (you won’t be disappointed) so you’re up to speed. Hope to see more with this duo. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Update 5/13/25: Reposting my review to celebrate that today is publication day!

I’ve heard that most people go through life without encountering a serial killer. In fact, the vast majority make it through without ever experiencing serious peril. They just saunter along, whistling jauntily to themselves (at least, that’s how I imagine them), and then, after a relatively peaceful spin atop this green-and-blue marble, they expire in their sleep, a gentle smile on their lips.

Gee, I wonder what that’s like.

Because here I am, halfway through my twenty-fourth year, about to confront my second murderous psychopath. Wait, no—this is the third. When you forget one? That’s a bad sign.

Thanks to NetGalley and Putnam Books for sending me an ARC of Slaying You in exchange for an honest review.

The gang from Killing Me is back in Las Vegas, six months after that book, this time for Dot’s wedding. Amber, a two-time serial killer survivor, has her new girlfriend Kat with her, so it’s fine—just fine—that Marcella also has a new girlfriend. Grace is there too, not just to celebrate but also to help Dot and the Fatal Femmes catch a man who is drugging and shaving the heads of women on the Strip. But when Amber’s grifter parents show up unexpectedly, Amber’s simple trip spins out of control and, eventually, puts her in the path of yet another serial killer.

As with Killing Me, Slaying You is going for both laughs and thrills. The serial killer mystery is pretty straightforward and predictable (though the climax is solid and funny), but the mysteries involving Amber’s parents are more subtle and unexpected. Amber and Grace continue to have their cynical, sarcastic relationship, but there’s more warmth as each helps the other with some parental drama. And Amber and Marcella continue their slow build towards each other. Perhaps things will work out for them in the next book. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4. Recommended.

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review.

Well our serial killer hunter duo pops up again. If you have not read "Killing Me" you are going to be totally lost, so suggest that you don't try to read this as a stand-alone.

It's been about a year, and Amber has a new girlfriend named Kat. Amber is making her way back to Las Vegas for her friend Dot's wedding. Amber is still dealing with the events in "Killing Me" and though she doesn't want to deal with anymore serial killers, look that is the way things are going to play out for her when another man is running around Vegas, shaving the heads of sex workers. Amber still doesn't trust Grace (serial killer hunter extraordinaire) but when it seems Grace, Dot, and others are hell bent on tracking down another bad guy, Amber can't help getting involved. Even though it could cost her, her relationship with Kat.

Honestly, I would have loved to get more of Grace's points of view. Having Amber explain how Grace seems to her started to grate on me after a while. We get it Amber, you think she's an emotionless robot. We also get introduced to new characters via Amber in this one and they did not work for me at all until the very end. Her new girlfriend Kat was exhausting. Also, Amber who is dealing with having tons of money via Grace should have been smarter about a lot of things. Just saying. The new characters that we get in this via Amber though just felt a bit squishy slash convoluted at times but I was really happy with the explanation we get at the end. I kept going why are they in this book.

I have to say the flow was kind of up and down for me. I think going from present day Amber to past Amber and past Grace was just too much after a while.

I thought the love triangle was not even something that Gagnon should have focused on. I hope for the next book we switch perspectives between Amber and Grace. It's really hard to get to know her and I wanted more information about her and her life in this one.

I thought the ending was fantastic and I cracked up.

I LOVE THIS SERIES! It’s so fun and packed with action and laughs. The relationships are heartfelt, I love Dot so much. This one was a little less exciting than the first, I thought but I really enjoyed it. The parts with the parents got a bit repetitive but that’s easily overlooked for me. Thanks to NetGalley for the chance to review!

BOOK: Slaying You (an Amber Jamison Novel, 2 book series)
AUTHOR: Michelle Gagnon
PUB DATE: May 13, 2025, by G.P. Putnam’s Sons
PAGES: 320
RATING: RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
GENRE: Fiction/Mystery/Neo-Noir Thriller

A BIG THANK YOU to Putnam Books, NetGalley, and the author for gifting me an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

QUICK SYNOPSIS: They survived a monster once. Now, the real nightmare begins. Grace and Amber escaped the clutches of a ruthless psychopath, but normal life has never come easy. Haunted by their past, they’ve kept their distance—until a Vegas wedding pulls them back into each other’s orbit. When members of their inner circle start turning up dead, the reluctant allies realize a new predator is stalking them. Smarter. Deadlier. And far too close for comfort. To stop a killer, they’ll have to embrace the darkness they’ve tried to forget. The question is: can they outsmart evil twice?

QUICK & SPOILER-FREE REVIEW: As a huge fan of the first book in this series, Killing Me, I was thrilled to dive back into Amber and Grace’s world—and this sequel did not disappoint! Just like the original, this installment delivers the perfect blend of suspense, humor, and heart-pounding action. It was such a treat to see Amber reunite with her fierce and quirky group of Las Vegas heroines as they face off against a new, chilling serial killer. The mystery kept me guessing, the characters were as sharp and entertaining as ever, and the story balanced tension with laugh-out-loud moments in a way that’s rare to find. If you're a fan of Janet Evanovich’s One for the Money or Elle Cosimano’s Finlay Donovan series, this book absolutely belongs on your shelf. I couldn’t stop flipping pages—Amber’s and Grace’s high-stakes, darkly funny journey had me hooked from start to finish.

Slaying You picks up with Grace and Amber—two survivors who once escaped the clutches of a ruthless psychopath—trying to live normal lives. But "normal" doesn’t seem to be in the cards for them. When a friend’s Las Vegas wedding brings them back together, they quickly realize that danger is once again closing in. A new killer is targeting their inner circle, and with bodies piling up, Grace and Amber must rely on their survival skills to stay alive. They’ve outsmarted a murderer before—can they do it again?

I absolutely loved this book! It was a fast, thrilling read that kept me hooked from start to finish. I definitely recommend reading Killing Me first, because Slaying You builds on the chaos from that book. I have to admit, I hated Kat immediately, and honestly, I was glad she got what she deserved. Amber’s parents were the absolute worst, but I loved seeing how much Amber has grown since book one—she’s a smarter, stronger character now, with far fewer “dumb” decisions (though she still has one or two). I’d love for this series to continue because I’m a huge fan of quirky, funny, and distinct characters like Dot. If you love the Finlay Donovan series, this is an absolute must-read.

Grace, Amber, Marcella and Dot!!! What lovely ladies! They’re back at it again in Vegas!! I love the way this book legit transports me out west. The writing does an excellent job at setting the scene. It’s one of the things I loved most about “Killing Me”. This book however wasn’t as thrilling as the first. Maybe becuase the first edition was unlike anything I’ve read. And so it was a little more exciting. But overall a really good read (listen)!

This book was a combination of dark, dangerous and randomly humorous. I usually love that combo, but somehow it felt a bit awkward to be at points and the pacing was very inconsistent. I did think there were such interesting characters and some fun moments - the con at the end was great! It was dark and intriguing enough to keep going, but there wasn't much mystery to what was happening / what would happen

Thank you G.P. Putnam’s Sons for my gifted copy!

“You can’t get through life without help. The key is more people, not less. You need to build yourself a net of folks who will come running if you’re in trouble.”

Oh, Amber. Dot. Marcella. Grace. Reading this sequel was like coming home. It was *so* much fun. I can easily say that I have never encountered a cast, a net of folks, quite like the group of people who surround Amber. They were lovable and fleshed out in the original book, but there is an added depth in this sequel that made me love them even more. It made me wish for the same type of ride or die crew.

It feels like a feat to write a sequel that is as compelling and fun as the original, but Michelle Gagnon perfected it; because if anything, I almost loved Slaying You more than Killing Me, but there will always be a special place in my heart for the OG Amanda book.

This series has it all: serial killers, Fatal Femmes, noir, Vegas, algorithms, cattle prods, friendships, conmen, adrenaline and hope. If you haven’t read Killing Me, get on it so you can immediately binge Slaying You.

I was lucky enough to read an advance copy of Killing Me before it was published, and I gave rave reviews to that book. Naturally, I jumped at the chance to read an early copy of Slaying You, the follow-up. Sometimes a sophomore novel can be tricky; you need to recapture the magic of the original without retreading old ground or getting stale. Michelle Gagnon suffered from none of those issues. Slaying You held me in rapture from the very beginning, and it was like no time had passed at all, I didn't need to get reacquainted with the characters because they were so fully fleshed out in the first book, that I haven't forgotten a single detail about one of them. We get the ball rolling right away in Slaying You and then never slow down until the jaw dropping conclusion. I will say that I guessed a few of the "twists" fairly early, but I still had a rockin' good time reading this book. Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin Group Putnam for the gifted copy.

Slaying You is the much anticipated sequel to Killing Me, which was one of the most entertaining and enjoyable books I read last year. I had high expectations for this one. While it didn't have as interesting of a plot as the first book, it was still enjoyable. This book has the same lovable and intriguing characters, with a few new additions. The first part of the book starts slow, but then around the 30% mark things start to pick up and get more interesting. I would highly recommend reading the first book before diving into this one. As much as I would love more of Amber, Grace, and entourage...it seems from the author's note this may be the last we hear of them. Fingers crossed for more!

Slaying You is the sequel to Killing Me, which I read back in 2023. Killing Me was such a fun and entertaining thriller, so I was very excited to pick up the sequel. It follows Amber as she returns to Las Vegas for a friend’s wedding. But once again, she finds that a serial killer is targeting her and her friends.

Like Killing Me, this was a fast-paced read that I found hard to put down. I enjoyed being back with Amber, Grace, Dottie and Marcella. The short chapters made it very propulsive and I loved the darkly humorous writing and witty banter. My only issue is that it felt a bit like a retread of the first book. Killing Me felt so fresh and different than other thrillers I’ve read. Slaying You was missing some of that freshness. I also thought the ending was very rushed and things were tied up a bit too neatly.

Overall I still really enjoyed Slaying You and if there is another book in the series, I will definitely pick it up!

I love that these books really lean into being fairly gruesome for the kind of cozy feel they have in other scenes. I feel like the stakes are high (although I think they could have been slightly more impactful if we're being honest). This was overall so fun, and I really enjoyed the way it ended. All in all, a good read and a solid sequel!

Amber is back in Las Vegas for Dot’s wedding. She had left after what happened and set up a nice life in San Francisco with a new girlfriend. Once again a dangerous killer is in Las Vegas and it’s up to the old gang to get to the bottom of it. Slaying You is the follow up to Killing Me and just as entertaining. Great cast of characters that will make you giggle and turn the pages wanting more. I’d love to see more of Amber and Grace!

—A satire-mystery about a young woman and her Las Vegas crime-solving friends

This series is silly but overall enjoyable. The cast is a variety of wild Vegas characters and although the plot is all over the place the mystery ends well. Thank you NetGalley for introducing me to this series. Book 2 out this month!

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of Slaying You.

I enjoyed the first book in the series so I was pleased my request was approved.

** Minor drama-free spoilers ahead **

Grace and Amber are back...to celebrate a friend's wedding in Las Vegas.

But the festivities takes a back burner when the duo discover a new serial killer is on the prowl...and this time it's personal.

The second book in the series offers more insight into Amber and Grace's background, namely family drama.

I wasn't sold on the family drama and the trouble their appearances kicked off.

We all have drama but I was hoping for a more straightforward serial killer hunt like in the first book.

I like Amber, but I still haven't warmed up to Grace.

I don't dislike her, but I wouldn't want to hang out with her in real life.

I understand she had a tumultuous upbringing and it's clearly reflected in her personality. I respect that.

I figured out who Kat was early on and all the family drama involving Grace and Amber was too coincidental for me to suspend disbelief for.

It dragged the pacing and suspense was lacking in the narrative.

I wasn't a fan of the silly love triangle and found this subplot distracting and unnecessary filler.

I love Dot; she's loyal, kind, warm, friendly, and supportive and always ready to get her hands dirty (pun intended).

I love the ending.

Don't you just love it when bad people get their just desserts, especially when they're 'family?'

I literally squealed out loud when I saw there was a sequel!

Michelle Gagnon checks ALL the boxes in this darkly humorous follow-up to to Killing Me. Dark humor, quirky cast of characters, fun and familiar setting, insane plot - but we all have that one friend who this would absolutely 100 percent happen to, and of course bald heads.

Following up months after the events of Killing Me (this is not a standalone novel, and you will both need and want to read the first in the series), the gang is back together in Las Vegas for Dot and Jim's wedding and Amber arrives with a wealthy foreign girlfriend in tow to show that she has put her serial killer victim days behind her. Or has she? When a prison bus accident sends a known serial killer directly in her path, Amber's life is literally on the line...again. Hopefully third time's not the charm.

I absolutely tore through this book with gusto. It is the perfect blend of edge of your seat - what is going to happen next, along with a very strong attachment to the characters (Can I be an honorary member of the Femme Fatales?). The humor is dry, subtle, and most definitely dark - but there is also so much heart in this story. I loved getting more of Grace's backstory as well as Amber's, even though I saw the one twist from a mile away.

Although the main characters is queer, there is little to no spice as this is not a romance.

Simply put, I cannot wait for the next installment in this series. Please, please let there be more. In the meantime, I'll be recommending both this and Killing You to everyone I know.

For fans of Killing Me and mystery/thrillers such as the Finlay Donovan series.

Amber, who apparently exudes a pheromone that attracts serial killers, returns in a sequel to “Killing Me,” with her serial-killer killer frenemy, Grace. Amber hilariously escaped the Pikachu Killer in the first thriller and has returned to the garish neon landscape of Vegas with a new girlfriend, Kat, to attend Dot’s wedding. Dot, who owns some retro-themed off-Strip motels, is a co-founder of the “Fatal Femmes,” citizen sleuths and amateur bounty babes. For Amber, the pre-wedding festivities are also a reunion with the wild women of “Killing Me,” which means more encounters with very bad men who deserve quick (or not) horrible deaths. In this instance, there’s a creepy fetishist drugging women and then shaving their heads (giving Amber terrible PTSD about her Pikachu Killer experience and her grifter parents).

I loved Gagnon’s first book with all the weird and hilarious banter and “Slaying You” is a great follow up. You can read this one as a standalone, but you’ll get a better idea of Amber and Grace’s unusual relationship if you read the first one. The action is non-stop and, as strange as the serial-killer hunting premise is, this is a great story about female friendships. It’s hilarious even in the gory parts. 4.5 stars!

Literary Pet Peeve Checklist:
Green Eyes (only 2% of the real world, yet it seems like 90% of all fictional females): YES Kat has green eyes.
Horticultural Faux Pas (plants out of season or growing zones, like daffodils in autumn or bougainvillea in Alaska): There’s a confusing conversation about hyacinths going “limp” (they really only last a few weeks) and therefore they would be replaced by non-flowering rosemary, a weird substitution.

Thank you to Penguin Group/G.P. Putnam and NetGalley for an advanced reader copy!

Absolutely loved this book. I struggled at the beginning because I forgot all the characters' names, but got into it very quickly after a skimmed refresher of the first book. There was a point about three quarters through where I thought, "Wow this book is great." I remember thinking the first would make a great film and I feel the same about this one. I didn't see how the first could have a sequel, and the way Gagnon conceptualized a sequel that doesn't feel forced is impressive. This one was clearly opened at the ending for more adventures, and I'll be ready for them.

OK, I may be in the minority here, but I was disappointed by this one... I LOVED the first book and was so excited to see a sequel, but somehow from almost the opening pages, I felt absolutely no connection to the characters this time around, and didn't find any of the magic snark I so appreciated in the other book. There was nothing wrong with it, I just didn't fall into it like I wanted (expected) to.

Reliable with the thrills and twists. I liked the character development the most. I find I’m becoming more invested in the characters and their relationships with each other. The serial killer plot point was a little stale but I did like the addition of Amber’s parents.

Slaying You reunites Grace and Amber, two survivors of a past encounter with a vicious psychopath and Gagnon delivers a thriller that leans heavily into the dark and often twisted sides of its protagonists.

The premise of two women, both struggling to fit into "normal" life after such trauma, finding themselves once again in the crosshairs of a dangerous killer offers an intriguing setup for a suspenseful and character driven story. On the positive side, Gagnon excels at crafting protagonists who are far from perfect. Grace and Amber are complex, flawed and possess a certain edge that makes them compelling, if not always entirely likable. Their shared history and the lingering trauma that shapes their actions add a layer of psychological depth to the narrative. The pacing is generally brisk and the plot moves forward with a sense of urgency as the body count rises and the danger escalates.

However, it doesn't fully escape some familiar thriller tropes. While the premise is engaging, some of the plot twists and turns can feel somewhat predictable and the killer's motivations, while present, may not be the most original or groundbreaking. At times, the narrative's focus on the darker aspects of the characters can overshadow the suspense, making it feel more like a character study with thriller elements than a tightly woven, edge-of-your-seat thriller. Furthermore, while the "hilarious" description in some promotional materials might be a bit of a stretch, the book does have moments of dark humour, but these are scattered with the more intense and violent aspects of the story, which might create inconsistencies for some readers.

Overall, Slaying You is a solid thriller with a strong focus on its damaged but resilient protagonists. It has engaging characters and a fast-paced plot but it doesn't quite reach the level of a truly exceptional or groundbreaking thriller. It's a decent read for fans of the genre who appreciate morally gray characters and a darker tone but those seeking a completely fresh or unpredictable thriller might find it somewhat familiar.

When I read Killing me (book 1) by Michelle Gagnon. My mind was blown. I finished reading it thinking "WTF did I just read?" That book stuck with me. In a good way. When I saw there was a sequel to be written I was stoked! I'm still stoked, but........

Our story starts with Amber returning to Las Vegas for Dot's wedding. Amber has gone on to live in San Francisco, found a new girlfriend, earned her degree and has been enjoying the money rewarded to her by Grace. Returning back to Vegas is both exciting and stressful with all the memories of being chased and attacked by two serial killers. Happy to see her friends but also trying to maintain the new life she's building. She dives into the festivities with her girlfriend in tow.

Everything that takes place happens over a few days. It took me longer to read it than the actual time line of the book. (Reading during lunch breaks, not a reflection on the writing.) I do wish I had taken the time to sit down and read more of it at once. Maybe over just a couple of days. I greatly enjoyed the whole story, until the end. Was it a bad ending? Nope. I have a couple caveats but I'm not going to spoil it. Every question I had was literally for the very end. How did Grace know where to go for the final hurrah? Did I skim over that part where Dot tells her? And you mean the guy is an evil controlling manipulative man yet fell for that? Hmmmm....... I feel the ending needed a different sort of pizazz than was presented. BUT........ I'm still giving it 4 stars. Still glad there was a sequel. And still recommend you read it. Is it a stand alone read..... it can be. Do I think you will get the full effect of what's going on with Amber? Nope. You need to read Killing Me and then read Slaying you. Which by the way, excellent play with the titles. Thank you #netgalley and #PENGUINGROUPPutnam #GPPutnamsSons for the eArch of this book.
