Traditional Ando-Amazonian medicine man takes readers through the three main pillars of Amazonian indigenous teachings, and through a deeper place of transformation and healing with insights and step-by-step guidance.
Beyond Ayahuasca empowers readers to transform their very relationship to themselves—and the entire universe—through a series of tools and practices, questions for self-inquiry and guided contemplation, reminders of the power to stay “real” and accountable throughout the innate spiritual journey, and information about the evolutionary science of humanity. This will aid in recognizing patterns in their life—both beneficial and malefic as well as provide the awareness training tools to help transform one’s life.
This book offers a unique guide to Ayahuasca ceremonial traditions, allowing the reader to have a direct firsthand experience of going through a shamanic rite of passage and apprenticeship, and realizing one’s fullest potential to live a life free of suffering.
"For the past two decades, I have incessantly studied and consulted with elders, native guides, ethnobotanists, anthropologists, and archaeologists of the Peruvian Amazon and the Andes. The lessons, revealed to me through these encounters and those discovered through personal practice, have been pieced together, thread by thread, to recreate a spiritual discipline of a forgotten and highly advanced civilization. Many elders I met referred to their ancestral wisdom as the evolutionary science of humanity. At the heart of this book is the indigenous evolutionary science of what it means to be human."
It was the title of this book that captured my interest – what did it mean to go beyond the Ayahuasca experience? So many of my friends and clients had experienced Mother Ayahuasca, and while for some, it was a deep transformation, for more of them it was a shock to the system difficult to integrate. From my own work with plant allies, I knew that the wisdom of the plant came to me through several pathways, some of the most important being honoring the deva of the plant, its cosmology, its culture significance - its very archetype. As I dove into the chapters, it became clear that Roman Hanis was writing about shamanic rites of passage that went far beyond the plant itself, and while the Ayahuasca ceremony was a portal, it wasn’t the whole point of the ritual. This is a book you’ll want to take notes of and savor its wisdom. Roman is a medicine man who truly honors the Indigenous wisdom he learned along his own healing path. This imparts great meaning to his life story and how anyone can find meaning in theirs through learning, ritual and practice. I especially found the ‘tools’ and ‘reflections’ sections at the end of each chapter helpful. It is one thing to read about something, and to subsequently make it one’s own. The Five Pathologies of the Amazonian Healing System were especially revelatory about being human. There is so much in this well written, intelligent account of self-gnosis and the relationship between oneself and all sentient life, toward non-suffering.
Monika Carless, Author, Transforming the Mother Wound - Hay House
This book displays a rare combination of beautiful, clear prose and deep authenticity that shines through on every page. In a space full of false or misleading information, Roman’s story is deeply rooted in ancient indigenous wisdom traditions but also provides concrete practices applicable in modernity. I strongly recommend this book for seekers, practitioners, and especially for those hoping to integrate their psychedelic experiences towards deeper personal growth and healing.
